Not sure, but I'd guess the shaft on anything less than 1 1/2" is solid and
anything over that is probably hollow. Our shaft is 3" in diameter and has to
be hollow with 1/4" thick walls. I dropped our rudder several years ago and I'd
estimate it weighs around 125#, and a solid shaft of that size
The shaft on the original rudder for my 38 mk1 was 2" schedule 80 stainless
tube (2 1/4 OD and wall thickness about 1/4", IIRC) It had a machined
stainless plug welded into the top for the upper nut and the emergency
tiller attachment.
The replacement rudder is built on the shaft from a similar vi

I second the recommendation for Bar Keeper's Friend. It cleans all sorts of
stuff, rust and glue residue included. It can be used on a wide variety of
surfaces so it's handy to have around in general.

As the gel coat wears away, you can start to see the fiberglass fibers. Matte
would have a random pattern. Since it's a grid, it sounds like roving, which is
the glass layer that is usually laid up on top of the layer of matte (for

It is probably Fiberglass mat "print-thru". It is noticeable on my blue
awlgripped hull. Surveyor said it was part of the post-mold curing process and
was not to be worried about. When I paint the hull again it will go away.

Has anyone has any success in slowing down the appearance of the brown
stains on topsides? Does wax, super poly glo or new, less porous paint
make any difference? I tried Awlcare (the Awlgrip cleaner / protector this

I understand that rust stains and those brown stains we see just above the
water line, at least we get them here in St. Margaret's Bay, are actually
very fine particulates in nature and these small particles penetrate into
the gel coat or paint. Getting rid of them requires more than elbow
grease.
On my 38 mk1, its just over 2 ft 4 in on the LP call it 2 ½ ft on the
foot of the sail.

from.solutions containing, oxalic acid and/ or phosphoric acid work well, or
a solution of 15% hydrochloric (muriatic) acid in water also works well.
