As the gel coat wears away, you can start to see the fiberglass fibers. Matte 
would have a random pattern. Since it's a grid, it sounds like roving, which is 
the glass layer that is usually laid up on top of the layer of matte (for 
strength). Did your boat ever have any fiberglass repair done to that area? If 
so, the person who did the repair job may have used roving and not matte.
