Most motherboards have a setting in the BIOS setup for this.
In almost every case, it's 0x330.

When my laptop tries to use ALSA snd-via82xx.o it hard locks
immediately. If I first use the OSS via82cxxx_audio.o, unload then load
the ALSA snd-via82xx.o it works fine. This happened in 0.9.0rc[3-6].
The snd-via82xx.o module in 2.5.47-ac4 works without any problems.

I have a SB Live Value and have recently changed to Debian from
RedHat72. I also run WinMe on the same machine.
In WinMe when I have the volume control sliders at maximum the sound is
quite loud. In Debian with the sliders at max the sound is barely
audible and I have to up the volume on

Nope, that didn't fix the problem. I've upped every single slider in
alsamixer to the max.
There is some stuff I can't figure out how to change though:
