And do any of the files in /etc/modprobe.d/ contain
any settings for any snd-* modules?

Did you configure anything in /etc/modprobe.d/?
Or is there any file with settings for snd-* modules?

That's a plain standard USB audio device.
Is the snd-usb-audio module loaded? (lsmod)
If yes, does the device appear in the output of "aplay -l"?

There is no PCI Express audio device.

Apparently not.
Please show the output of "lspci -vvvnn" or "lsusb -v" for your device.

I've just joined the list as a I can't find any info on my problem.
I have a MacBookPro 13" (double boot) and all the output part of audio work

What I can't get in any way working is the mic.
I've tried almost everything found on the net but no success up to now.

What do you mean? It's impossible that ALSA could work but "cat
/proc/asound/cards" outputs nothing.

It may not be ALSA's fault per se, but it is more likely a problem with
my ALSA configuration. As I said, everything is perfect if I rmmod all
the ALSA stuff and use the OSS emu10k1 driver. There are no problems
with that driver, so it has to be a configuration issue with the other.
That said, I d

Dana,
I don't think the tinny sound et al. should be blamed on the ALSA
drivers, perhaps you should be looking into the SB Live card and your setup
first as candidate for review. I also am a musician and have invested
considerable research into my choice of O.S driver and card and Alsa (f
I'm new to the list. Let me explain a bit about myself and stuff.
I didn't ever want to use ALSA, but as the dev kernel has now merged it,
it will become the standard very quickly, and I don't want to hold back.
But I also didn't want to settle for lesser quality in my sound. I am a
musician. The

Let's get right into the subject: I have installed the the latest *stable*
release of ALSA Drivers (0.5.9 if my memory serves me). I had to go through
some config stuff like inserting those lines in modules.conf and stuff, but
I succeded at last.
There is one more problem though. I haven't
