I'm new to the list. Let me explain a bit about myself and stuff. I didn't ever want to use ALSA, but as the dev kernel has now merged it, it will become the standard very quickly, and I don't want to hold back. But I also didn't want to settle for lesser quality in my sound. I am a musician. The sound of music is very important to me. I have always had bad experiences with ALSA, and so I was sticking to OSS. I liked it's simplicity and clarity of sound. ALSA had always sounded far inferior to me, with my experience ranging from noisy, tinny, and lacking balls, to almost decent. With the help of a mysterious man named Node, I have managed to get ALSA to sound almost on par with the old OSS drivers that I was using. I'm almost satisfied.
However... My front speakers are slightly monoish, and I'm not so sure what to do about that. Actually, it's mostly the left speaker... sounds that should be playing in the left channel only are playing centered. That's not normal. The rear speakers sound pretty good, aside from this weird noise that sounds like they are blown once in a while, under certain mixer settings. I think I've got it ironed out though. My hardware is the Creative Sound Blaster Live! 5.1 conencted (analog) to the Cambridge SoundWorks FPS2000 Digital speakers. This leads me to another question. Is there any advantage to using the digital connection under Linux? If any of you have any insight or tips on getting the most out of ALSA with an SBLive! card, please let me know.
