You also will find, that practically every (semi-)pro audio software
for Linux somehow requires ALSA as does Jack currently.

Could you test, if this happens with the OSS drivers, as well? I
remember, that the SBLive shows up very complicated in alsamixer.
Maybe there  is just one setting wrong? Then: is this an older, very
used soundcard? On my SBLive, the connections were soon worn out. I
now prefer the sturdier connection on professional cards like the
M-Audio Delta.

A digital connection has advantages not only on Linux, because you can
bypass the rather cheap digital-analog converters on the SBLive.
