I don't think the tinny sound et al. should be blamed on the ALSA
drivers, perhaps you should be looking into the SB Live card and your setup
first as candidate for review. I also am a musician and have invested
considerable research into my choice of O.S driver and card and Alsa (for
me) came up on top of the three audio subsystems available for linux. There
are many good sites out there that can help you resolve audio quality
issues that relate from the electronics level such as earth loops and
induction to the effects of graphic cards and interrupt requests on
sampling.
My set up is a delta 1010lt/ALSA/Ardour/slab/cinelerra and the sound
quality is excellent on all 8 input/output channels. Try googling for
"Linux Audio Quality" as a starting point, hope this helps
