Dana,
So your saying it sounds like some sort of digital distortion. Again
I would look into googling on "Linux Audio Quality" as a starting point
this issue is covered. Without knowing the specifics of your setup perhaps
the architecture of the OSS drivers are masking an issue that is made
apparent by using Alsa (and I don't use OSS). The answer must be there due
to the fact that there are other ALSA/SB Live users out there. They might
have (or had) the same experiences as you.
Perhaps this will serve you.
What speed machine, how much memory?
Is video on AGP? what sort of card - some are pigs. - don't have video on
PCI !!!
What interrupt is the SB on - you want 9, 10, 11or 12
What other devices on PCI bus? do they need to be there?
Have you installed low latency patches into the kernel and enabled them?
Have you turned off unneccesary daemons?
unloaded unneccesary kernel drivers?
Any other SB users experienced the problem you are having? (I don't own a
SB Live so how does your machine compare to Franks?)
Look at your DAW as a realtime peice of equipment like a VS880 etc - not
like a computer that can also record audio, mine is built specifically for
audio - nothing else. If you want quality results you will have to invest
time researching how components interact on the machine (like the
motherboard chipset, Via somtimes need special treatment). (I am gearing up
to record our album through alsa/ardour)
One other point, with your SB live breakout connectors why dont you plug a
short cable with gold plated connectors and plu/unplug from the connectors.
This would offer the SB connectors some level of protection.
again, good luck, and let us know how it turns out :*)
