[Bug 222860] Re: Hardy Xubuntu Shared Folders won't Unlock

2008-07-03 Thread jerrylamos
Intrepid Alpha 1 Xubuntu shared folders unlock O.K. I can set the
workgroup to our chosen local name, and home folder shared setup is fine
as verified in /etc/samba/smb.conf. Neither one of these work on Hardy
or Gutsy on this Dell Celeron. In those cases I have to manually edit
smb.conf to get sharing to work.

With all the changes and updates for Intrepid I do not know what fixed
the problem.

[Bug 253835] [NEW] Intrepid Xubuntu Desktop bottom & top lines missing

2008-07-31 Thread jerrylamos
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: brdesktop-common

Xubuntu Alpha 3 Intrepid Ibex 8.10 installed & running, Xubuntu-
restricted, updates, etc. was running O.K. 1.2 mHz Celeron with ATI
Radeon graphics.

Firefox Yahoo video O.K. Tried Yahoo.com video and Firefox got stuck.
Close would not complete. Did a restart, now the desktop background,
mouse, & icons come up but not the top & bottom lines (panels). I can
start a terminal but of course all the top and bottom line functions are
incaccessible.

Ctrl-Alt-F1, login, sudo killall GDM, sudo startx gets it going again
with complete desktop until I re-boot. Then desktop has only background,
icons, & mouse but not top & bottom lines. Somehow a new boot keeps
remembering something from the last boot instead of doing a full startx.
I've tried different options from the login menu with no help.

Any ideas on how to get Xubuntu desktop going again from boot? Any way
to get a fresh start short of re-install?

The system is dual boot with Ubuntu Intrepid Ibex Alpha 3 8.10. With
Ubuntu, so far, when Firefox gets stuck, close does complete and there
has not been a problem with getting the desktop restored properly (yet).

Thanks, Jerry

[Bug 213484] Re: firefox crashed with SIGSEGV

2008-08-24 Thread jerrylamos
Alpha 4 on Thinkpad R31. Displaying BBC video (flash?) the header worked,
seemed to be waiting forever to start the main video. Selected pause, it
didn't, selected close on Firefox and was informed of the subject crash report.
Apport gathered a report, not sure what it did with it.

[Bug 257450] Re: Intrepid Ibex Alpha 3 20080812 updates freeze Thinkpad R31

2008-08-25 Thread jerrylamos
1. Alpha 4 CD Live boots to the point that the desktop should load then
all activity stops and nothing on the keyboard works. I've downloaded
about three different daily builds of Alpha 4 Ubuntu with the same
result. The CD's do run on my Compaq and my Via motherboard systems.
When CD Live stops, of course, can't read any files or logs or anything
else since the keyboard is dead except for power off. Note the screen
background is either black or brown, and the cursor may move or not.
The desktop background never loads.

2. Alpha 3 runs O.K (for an alpha). I've installed it several times.
Upgrade everything results in 1. above. I've done that several times.
This Thinkpad has run Dapper, Edgy, Feisty, Gutsy, Hardy, and Intrepid
Alpha 3.

3. Alpha 3, upgrade everything else except Gnome 2, which is to say at
Alpha 4 level for everything but Gnome 2, runs O.K. (for an alpha).
I've done this twice.

4. Add just the upgrade for Gnome 2, nothing else, results in 1. above.

5. Alpha 4 CD Live Xubuntu runs O.K. for an Alpha. Kubuntu Alpha 4
runs O.K. for an alpha. No Gnome 2, no problem.

5. I'm dual booted from an Alpha 4 image for everything but Gnome 2 as
I enter this comment. Browsing the other install, the one that stops
when the Gnome desktop should load, the end of .xsession-errors follows.
Looks to me like X found the desktop, which then never appears on the
screen:

** (x-session-manager:5263): DEBUG: GsmManager: Looking for:

Sound does not work on Jaunty Alpha 1 on:
1. IBM Thinkpad R31

Intrepid sound works as expected on all three.

Minor pain, sound level gets reset to 0 and muted on every boot.

What info would anyone like to see?

Compiz & Intel setup work fine on Hardy.

Compiz changed. No longer works on many pc's as indicated in the Bug.

It's Compiz's fault, since Compiz changed, and it's Compiz's

[Bug 298388] Re: Jaunty could not open audio device

2008-11-16 Thread jerrylamos
Not a production machine. If no one ran on Alpha's and Beta's and
Release Candidate, Jaunty would be an even bigger mess than Intrepid has
been.

I reported a "won't even boot" launchpad bug #259398 on August 19 which
still wasn't fixed by Release. Lots of people then got bit, especially
on upgrade since Ubuntu doesn't support downgrades.

No sound on Jaunty on IBM Thinkpad R31, IBM Thinkpad T40, Compaq
Presario 3.3 gHz.

Both Jaunty upgraded to Alpha level and Alpha Alternate Install have no
sound.

Copying alsactl from Intrepid sbin to Jaunty sbin enables remembering
the sound level control instead of always forcing mute. However, still
no sound on all three machines. On Intrepid they all three play sound
provided the update to 2.6.27-10 is NOT installed.

[Bug 304514] Re: [i830] Fonts smear after a while of use (Hardy->Intrepid regression)

2009-05-12 Thread jerrylamos
Bugzilla 21415 may well be the same problem. Some comments there said
that turning swap off helped. This Thinkpad R31 has 512 mb and is not
very happy with swap off, however it does run. The font smear or
corruption (extra bits) is slower in appearing. I'll attach Xorg.0.log
with swap off and font corruptions accumulating. . On this Thinkpad
the trouble appeared about the time the driver was updated so Option
"NoAccel" was not necessary.

The driver in use is 2.7.0.

[Bug 310671] Re: jaunty ubiquity crash on edit partition

2009-01-28 Thread jerrylamos
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 309534 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/309534

Still doesn't seem like a duplicate to me, unless somehow the same
ubiquity code is failing on both bugs.

Anyway the edit partition doesn't crash however install still fails a
couple steps later because it "can't write partition table" because
"/cdrom is still mounted" bug #318485?

/cdrom is what I'm installing from. What's that got to do with the hard
disk partition table?

Alternate CD doesn't get this failure, only the live cd. I don't like
alternate because I can't tell if it is running before spending the time
to do installion.

Why does it want to write the partition table when the only thing it's
doing is formatting one (out of several) partitions and swap?

[Bug 318485] Re: jaunty Xubuntu Alpha 3 manual install fails

2009-01-30 Thread jerrylamos
Colin, yes, /dev/sda10 was a bootable live cd image.

This is based on https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Information/FromLinux
which was designed to be able to boot from a hard disk partition and
then install.

I boot on a real CD Rom.

Somehow, Grub or whoever is doing the boot, switches over to the image
on /dev/sda10. The real CD is then interpreted as a package CD instead
of the boot CD.

Whoever is doing the boot then makes a mount point of /cdom on
/dev/sda10, even though that was not the image that was really booted.

Manual Install then fails as described in this bug report, since whoever is
doing the boot has /dev/sda10 locked. So what, there are no changes to be done
to the partition table, and
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Information/FromLinux
was developed to allow installs.

Attached is a gparted image done on the live CD just after the failed
manual install.

Following that will be an attachment showing what manual install saw.
It doesn't see the mount points or the locked partition.

I did format /dev/sda10 and was then able to boot from the CD and
complete manual install successfully of 20090130 (usual jaunty sound and
splash bugs etc.).

Thanks for your question.

Window view of manual install just before the failure to install because
/dev/sda10 was mounted as /cdrom even though that wasn't the real CD
device the boot was started from.

[Bug 322374] Re: [jaunty regression] Pulse Audio finds no card for output

2009-01-31 Thread jerrylamos
sudo killall pulseaudio works great.
I also removed pulseaudio from System Preferences Sessions and
added ausdio settings management to System Administration Sessions.

I'll try pulseaudio from time to time.

[Bug 385947] Re: [i845g] karmic CD Live black screen i840 video

2009-06-16 Thread jerrylamos
I ran out of ideas on how to investigate this bug, so I downloaded
Alternate KarmicA2 and installed that. This is it running now. A few kinks on
the install but not bad for this level. I don't much like Alternate but it at
least boots! The desktop karmic A2's don't on this i845g.

Both the original Karmic A2 and Daily Build 20090615 still fail as
described in this bug, so if anyone wants anything tried or how to get
more info please let me know.

Compaq Presario is booting CD Live on jaunty & karmic O.K. so whatever
the problem it is O.K. on the Compaq now.

Installs went O.K. as well. It's a quad boot. Karmic forum helped on
the multi-boot with Grub2.

[Bug 383002] [NEW] KMS on karmic with i845 inivisible cursor

2009-06-02 Thread jerrylamos
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

karmic updated as of today, activate KMS according to
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/KernelModeSetting.

cursor is invisible(!) which is a real bear to try to run ubuntu-bug -p
xorg, or do much of anything else. I don't seem to be able to find the
/var/crash report from ubuntu-bug even though I entered "K" to keep it
according to the message.

Attached are version, lspci -vvnn, Xorg.0.log
Xorg.0.log from KMS with i915 modeset=1 invisible cursor
for comparison,
Xorg.0.log with i915 modeset=0
Do note differences in the way the cursor is set up.

Anything else? Reproduces at will.

2009-06-04 Thread jerrylamos
Karmic xorg intel 2.7.99.1 latest update as of today, tried KMS and it
still fails on i845 with invisible cursor with modeset = 1.

Running now with modeset = 0, rather slowly with GtkPerf 42 seconds
while VESA runs faster in 27 seconds.

Is there any plan yet for Ubuntu to try the Red Hat Bugzilla 488980 fix?
It's in the kernel.

The fix went out on Red Hat on 20 May on

[Bug 383002] Re: KMS on karmic with i845 inivisible cursor

Cursor is back again and works with:

Linux version 2.6.30-999-generic (r...@zinc) (gcc version 4.2.3 (Ubuntu
4.2.3-2ubuntu7)) #1244192415 SMP Fri Jun 5 09:45:34 UTC 2009

from https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds

GtkPerf is still slow on i845 about the same as 2.6.30-5

KMS modeset 1 takes 42.5 seconds
KMS modeset 0 takes 40.3 seconds

For comparison, Vesa is still fastest on this i845:

vesa takes 27 seconds with 2.6.30-5

Not sure when/if 2.6.30-999 versions will be on Karmic. I'll check
Alpha 2.

2009-06-05 Thread jerrylamos
i830 with 2.7.0 Option "AccelMethod" "uxa" is still getting flickering
black screen instead of desktop.

karmic Alpha 1 /proc/version:

(Ubuntu 4.4.0-3ubuntu3) ) #6-Ubuntu SMP Mon May 11 19:56:30 UTC 2009

With flickering black screen, I can do Ctrl-Alt-F1 and log in. Running
ubuntu-bug -p xorg seems to gather a log, however when in text mode it
gives the options of K,S,V, ... to keep the log ubuntu-bug quits and
says Report None. And in fact, directory /var/crash is empty.

I'll attach Xorg.0.log from the failed state.

[Bug 385947] Re: [i845g] karmic CD Live black screen i840 video

2009-06-11 Thread jerrylamos
Geir,
As soon as gdm starts it switches up a black screen and the pc stops
altogether. No keyboard keys do anything, example Ctrl-Alt-F1 doesn't do
anything, so there's no way to get into the system at all. The only key that
works is power off.

What I need is a way to start X without starting Gnome.

I don't know enough about X to do that; the closest I came was to boot
recovery mode from the CD, at the menu choose root prompt, do nano
/etc/X11/xorg.conf to enter the ModeDebug true, then do:

/etc/init.d/gdm restart && /etc/init.d/gdm stop.

That seemed to do a gdm start followed shortly by a stop, which it did
before GNOME hung the system. I don't know if there is enough in the
Xorg.0.log to indicate a problem. Attached is an Xorg.0.log from that
try, as saved on a partition. There is a whole lot of dumpregs at the
bottom, I wouldn't know from the problem or from stopping gdm.

I need a way to stop GNOME before the black screen switches up, or else
a way to start X without starting GNOME. maybe the system will still be
alive enough to save the Xorg.0.log. Gnome does a hard hang to
everything. The processor chip stops executing any instructions at all.
I don't know the linux commands that well. Let me look in a couple
books.

Geir,
I tried a simple
xinit
which gets me a black screen with a white window at top left with:

r...@ubuntu:~#

I think that is xterm. It's followed by an empty box.

at which point nothing works. No keyboard, no cursor, nothing at all.
Dead. And of course, Ctrl-Alt-Backspace doesn't work since it is by
default disabled, which probably doesn't matter in this case since the
keyboard is dead.

Is there any data we can get to help?

This bug has been around since the "NoAccel" problem was fixed in the

verified on June 3. Any chance Ubuntu will pick up the fix?

Not having much luck with the back trace ssh.

Loaded in the wiki//backtracing, got it running, was logged in from
ssh, did a startx.

This time the desktop started to load then stopped with "User Switcher" has
quit unexpectedly.
Mouse doesn't work
Keyboard doesn't work
ssh no response to any commands.
Ctrl-C and the test system display woke up with (gdb) prompt
(gdb) backtrace all
No stack

I didn't know what to do at that point. Ctrll C
then tried saving Xorg.0.log. If it's there will attach in subsequent comment.

Started CD Live in recovery mode, then root prompt

Note that pgrep Xorg doesn't give a process id since Xorg isn't started
yet. The pc hangs when Xorg gets going.

started gdb

Was logged in over the network and did a startx from there

Gnome came up, background, loaded applets in top left, tried to load
applet in top right, froze with message about reload or cancel applet.

Keyboard dead, mouse dead, no replies from anything entered over network
until I pressed Ctrl-C

I saved the Xorg.0.log however to my untrained eye there doesn't seem to
be anything outstanding there.

Any ideas of things to try?

By the way, this is from the same pc i845g running Karmic Alpha 1 from
changing jaunty to karmic in apt sources.list, and updated.

[Bug 355970] Re: jaunty nautilus Segmentation fault (core dumped)

2009-06-29 Thread jerrylamos
This bug does not currently exist in karmic so it can be closed.

I'm currently working on another bug with CD Live on the same processor
where the processor crashes. Launchpad bug #385947.

Your instructions only work if the processor is still running. They
don't work if the processor has in fact crashed and stopped. There
isn't any '.crash' file in /var/crash when the processor crashes and
stops. The crash report can only be generated if the processor can
still run.

Thanks for looking at this bug report.

[Bug 381134] [NEW] karmic shutdown failure Thinkpad T40

2009-05-27 Thread jerrylamos
Public bug reported:

karmic shutdown fails on IBM Thinkpad T40 if booted with "quiet splash".

Linux version 2.6.30-5-generic (bui...@rothera) (gcc version 4.4.1
(Ubuntu 4.4.0-3ubuntu3) ) #6-Ubuntu SMP Mon May 11 19:56:30 UTC 2009

Updates as of today as well.

Normal boot with "quiet splash" has several problems:

1. USB logitech mouse not recognized. The trackpoint works.
2. USB IBM keyboard not recognized. The builtin keyboard works.
3. Screen comes up half bright.
4. Shutdown gets message "Power manager not responding". I select "continue".
5. Shutdown then hangs with black screen and blinking cursor
6. Ctrl-Alt-F1 shows screen with "T40 login:" however keyboard produces no
response.
7. Power off pushbutton required.
8. Syslog is attached, protection faults, segment faults, various other
ominous messages.

Boot with "quiet splash" removed works normally. USB devices detected & work,
shutdown works, ...
Boot in recovery mode works normally as well.
Syslog is attached showing USB Logitech mouse, ... as expected.

T40 runs Intrepid, Jaunty just fine.

I have karmic running on Thinkpad R31, ThinkCentre A30 tower, Compaq
Presario tower. None have this problem.

Reproducable at will. Let me know of anything else you may want

Thanks, Jerry

lspci from T40

Note, Ubuntu runs quite well on this machine. GtkPerf is about 12.5
using driver "ati" which is default, seems to be pretty good for a 1.5

[Bug 259385] Re: [i845] Intrepid Compiz freezes on login for i830MG, i845, (and i945GM?) video cards

2009-05-29 Thread jerrylamos
Bryce,

I'm not sure what you want tested. I looked at the notes preceding
yours and they mentioned a bunch of different things to try.

Perhaps you mean the (Bleeding-Edge) in ubuntuforums Jaunty Intel
Performance Guide?

Here's where I am. Everything's running karmic updated as of today, however
there haven't been many updates the last few days.

i845 on this IBM ThinkCentre A30 tower 2 gHz Celeron 1 gb memory with karmic
will run:

Driver "Intel"
Option "AccelMethod" "uxa"
Option "Tiling" "false" # tiling scrambles up GlxGears display

it runs GtkPerf of 38 to 41. Flash video jerky.

With
Driver "vesa"

it runs GtkPerf of 28 to 29. Flash video jerky.

(!). Go figure. Obviously I run with "vesa" on the i845, except for
testing purposes.

I'm into applications, firefox, flash video internet news, openoffice
write & calc, internet mail, digital picture manipulation, ... so I
consider Compiz a hindrance because it steals CPU cycles for fancy
desktop effects. Hence I turn it off even on the pc's where it will
work.

i830 on IBM Thinkpad R31 1.0 gHz Celeron karmic

Driver "vesa" gets flickering black screen. Can't use "vesa".

With default driver 2.7.0 which says it is for i830M etc. in Xorg.0.log
I assume it's running "uxa".

GtkPerf is about 35. Flash video jerky.

On Thinkpad T40 ati video GtkPerf is about 13. That's a 1.5 gHz Pentium,
karmic. Flash video good.
On Compaq Presario ati video 3.3 gHz GtkPerf gets 10 or a little less. Flash
video nice.

Conclusion the i845 Celeron 2.0 gHz is relatively slower which was my
opinion even on XP.

Jaunty and Karmic have not been usable on the i830 because of "font
smear", see Bugzilla bug 21415. Intrepid runs fine, granted I don't do
Compiz.

They claim to have a fix in process but I don't know how to test it, or
whether Ubuntu will pick up the fix. Do you have any clue?

Let me have a go at karmic with (Bleeding-Edge) suggestions on the i830.
It's a bit of a slog to do much with the fonts smearing all the time
making it hard to read the screen. i845 should be doable if I can
understand & follow the myriad steps.

Thanks, Jerry

[Bug 259385] Re: [i845] Intrepid Compiz freezes on login for i830MG, i845, (and i945GM?) video cards

2009-05-29 Thread jerrylamos
Edgers on i839 put in driver Intel with 1.6.1.901 version 2.7.99

Gtkperf slowed way down from 35 to 65. Oops, wrong way.

Tried downgrading to get back to previous level. Didn't work, still
2.7.99 lousy performance.

So I'm putting Alpha 1 Alternate CD back on it, hope to get back to
where it was before edgers.

[Bug 394422] [NEW] KMS karmic black screen i830 video

2009-07-01 Thread jerrylamos
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

karmic 2.6.31.-1 has KMS on as default. Will not boot on IBM Thinkpad
R31 with i830 graphics.

Boot proceeds to black screen with white arrow then goes black
altogether. Keyboard doesn't work. Mouse doesn't work. Cannot ssh in
from the local network because the Thinkpad is stopped altogether.

Cannot run ubuntu-bug xorg since thinkpad can't run anything at that
point.

Dual booted to intrepid (runs fine!) to get syslog, Xorg.0.log,
.xsession-errors. There is no crash report.

Linux version 2.6.31-1-generic (bui...@vernadsky) (gcc version 4.4.0
(Ubuntu 4.4.0-8ubuntu2) ) #13-Ubuntu SMP Fri Jun 26 16:53:22 UTC 2009

This entry is done from the 2.6.31-1 by editing grub boot screen to add
nomodeset after quiet splash. KMS is turned off so then 2.6.31-1 will
run.

lspci-vvnn from the Thinkpad R31.

Do note 2.6.31-1 still has the "font smear" problem that upstream video
says is fixed on bugzilla 21415. Either their fix doesn't work or else
Ubuntu hasn't picked it up. There's a launchpad bug # 304514 for that.
Much less of a problem than "it doesn't boot at all" which is this bug
I'm entering.

[Bug 395504] Re: kernel 2.6.31-1 xorg failure Radeon Xpress 200

2009-07-04 Thread jerrylamos
Xorg.0.log after failure

The failure reproduces every time. Command line is available so some other
info could be obtained.
Is there anything else that would be useful or anything to try?
I tried booting in recovery and adding Driver "ati" to xorg.conf which didn't
change the failure at all. Booting in recovery mode without quiet or splash
did not change the failure.
Recovery mode "fix broken packages" runs O.K. however does not change the
failure.

Thanks, Jerry

[Bug 394569] Re: X fails to start with kernel 2.6.31-1 and Radeon Xpress 200M

2009-07-04 Thread jerrylamos
My Radeon Xpress 200 fails the same way, Compaq Presario 3.3 gHz
Celeron.

My Radeon Mobility 7500 Thinkpad T40 works O.K. (with usual karmic A2
bugs).

My Intel i845 works O.K. (with ) including the very annoying random
console logouts. gdm is O.K.

Do note on the i845, the vaunted KMS with "accelerations" is 71% slower
than the old "vesa" on GtkPerf a benchmark available from Synaptic. In
particular the progress bar test is several times slower. On Radeon
Mobility 7500 with KMS performance with GtkPerf is about the same as it
was before.

[Bug 394422] Re: KMS karmic black screen i830 video

2009-07-04 Thread jerrylamos
The good news is with today's 20090704 update karmic 2.6.31-1 boots and
runs on i830 on this Thinkpad R31.

The bad news it is s-l-o-w. Using a video intensive benchmark in this
case GtkPerf from Ubuntu Synaptic:

Intrepid runs in 36.0 seconds
karmic_ runs in 65.8 seconds.

Karmic 2.6.31-1 is 83% slower!

In particular the progress bar test runs in

intrepid 1.36 seconds
karmic_ 4.23 seconds

Oof. What has KMS mode=1 done to us compared to Intel driver module
2.4.1?

Well anyway karmic boots & runs so the problem as written is fixed for
the moment (wait for the next update).

Thanks, Jerry

Do note the font smearing problem is still very much with us, with
several characters appearing as black blotches for example U and j and O
and K and Upstream thinks they fixed this see Bugzilla 21415 and
Launchpad #304514.

[Bug 304514] Re: [i830] Fonts smear after a while of use (Hardy->Intrepid regression)

2009-07-04 Thread jerrylamos
Font smear very much still with us on karmic 2.6.31-1 as updated on
20090704.

Either Ubuntu never picked up the fix from upstream on bugzilla 21415 or
else the fix doesn't work or whatever.

For useful work on this IBM Thinkpad R31 it's still Intrepid which
doesn't smear. Jaunty and karmic do.

2009-07-06 Thread jerrylamos
karmic 2.6.31-2 just out this evening boots on the Radeon Express 200
with normal Gnome desktop, no vertical bars. Do note however it is not
in KMS mode.

2.6.31-2 on Radeon Mobility 7500 is not in KMS mode either. The
Mobility 700 does run in KMS mode on 2.6.31-1 with no vertical bars.

Has Radeon been "blacklisted" for KMS on 2.6.31-2?

karmic with 2.6.30-1 on IBM ThinkCentre with Intel i845 graphics running
"uxa" O.K.

That's karmic by fresh install of jaunty ship level then changing
sources.list and updating & upgrading daily. How do I tell which driver
is being used?

jaunty with 2.6.30-rc4 on IBM Thinkpad with Intel i830 graphics fonts
gradually deteriorate with characters adding pixels. It's a bit worse
with 2.6.28-11. Intrepid doesn't have the problem at all.

2009-05-01 Thread jerrylamos
Currently running a fresh jaunty install, changed sources.list to
karmic, do update & upgrade daily.

It's an IBM ThinkCentre A30 with 2.0 gHz Celeron, 1 g memory, Intel i845
graphics. The machine is perfectly usable except jerky on video
particularly YouTube full screen. 2.6.30-1 may be a little better
however I don't know of a flash video benchmark?

The linux-image is 2.6.30-1 and "AccelMethod" "uxa" is running, and does
make a difference. I run about an hour at a time so I don't know if
there are any long term hangups.

How can I tell if this is 2.6.3 or what?

2009-05-02 Thread jerrylamos
Bryce,
i845 has been running "uxa" a few days now on release level jaunty with linux
images rc2, rc3, rc4, currently karmic koala 2.6.30-1.

Perfectly usable as a 2.0 gHz Celeron except for jerky video. I don't
have a flash video benchmark. Extremetuxpenguin runs about 3.1 to 4
frames a second as it goes. 3D benchmark glxdragon about 3.8 fps but I
don't think that's a good benchmark either.

glxgears a much maligned 3D program displays garbage with "uxa", but
doesn't freeze on the i845.

Kudu's to the developers after the intrepid and jaunty vidow bugs which
ran for months.

Andrew,
Installed 2.7.0 driver as reported by Xorg.0.log. I was able to run GtkPerf
three times O.K., fonts O.K. Then I startedl firefox and over half the fonts
in this message are big black blotches.

For what it is worth, GtkPerf was about 2% faster with 2.7.0 than 2.6.3
however it doesn't mean buch since to do any meaningful work at all I've
got to boot up Intrepid. Nice having dual boot.

Tried taking screenshot but couldn't read the window.

2009-05-10 Thread jerrylamos
Andrew,
Sure is an issue on IBM Thinkpad R31 i830, updated to rc4 etc. Run GtkPerf a
couple of times and text is essentially black blotches and unreadable. Let me
give the 2.7.0 driver a try. It's using 2.6.3 driver now.

Jaunty's running well otherwise, however I do get an occasional hang for all I
know might be related to whatever is spraying random pixels onto the fonts.

2009-05-05 Thread jerrylamos
Bryce, I tried the x-freeze-test however this command:

sudo INTEL_DEBUG=batch /etc/init.d/gdm restart

results in a black screen. I can do Ctrl-Alt-F1 however I couldn't get
any x display started.

I'm on rc4 with:

Module intel: vendor="X.Org Foundation"
compiled for 1.6.0, module version = 2.6.3
Module class: X.Org Video Driver
ABI class: X.Org Video Driver, version 5.0

which does freeze from time to time requiring reboot. This is i830 so
it would be a different bug #.

Any ideas on how to get the useful info so I can submit a bug report?
I'm dual boot so after a freeze I can bring up intrepid to look at the jaunty
/var/logs.

IBM Thinkpad R31 with i830 integrated graphics is just about unreadable with
jaunty after a few minutes. Intrepid no problem at all. Jaunty performance
generally good, a bit jerky with flash small window, jerky on full screen
flash. As I writhe this note, most characters in what I'm typing are
clobbered. As requested in a couple notes preceding, here are lspci-vvnn,
xorg.conf which has uxa and tiling false,
uname -a showing linux image rc4,
Xorg.0.log
fontsmear.jpg from screen capture.

This fontsmear stuff started about the time the "NoAccel" wasl not
required any more.

[Bug 277344] Re: Intrepid CD Live Gnome desktop fails

2008-10-17 Thread jerrylamos
CD Live 20081016 still boots to black screen.

It will boot using workaround in previous comment.

Install does run because it doesn't use compiz, however the installed
Ubunto gets the same fatal hang as CD Live. Boot in rescue mode and
remove compiz, then it runs.

Since this bug is rated "low" importance I assume at this late date
Release Code will have the same problem? and won't run on IBM Thinkpad
R31's. There are a number of posts in Intrepid Ibex Testing &
Discussion with different hardware and similar symptoms however I have
no way of knowing how many are related to compiz.

[Bug 277373] Re: cannot start Gnome session since intrepid beta on 845G-based system with compiz enabled

2008-11-03 Thread jerrylamos
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 259385 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/259385

Personal opinion, having been pagued by this problem since August 13:
1. Compiz developers being so fascinated by new "eye candy" tricks on high end
hardware they forgot about the base of people out there running on Intel (heard
of them?) hardware & drivers.
2. Deciding to abandon the 8.04 compiz code for the (vast number) of users
that 8.10 fails on.
3. Decision to make compiz default forgetting about the base of people out
there

My opinion, since I don't count, just an "ordinary user" testing fragile early
builds:
If existing 8.04 package runs on the configuration, new 8.10 doesn't, have
install put the right package on.

How many other paths are only used by Compiz? If paths are only used by
Compiz, then are all intended customer machines checked as a matter of

[Bug 119309] Re: Live CD shutdown can't remove CD

2008-10-18 Thread jerrylamos
On my dead stock completely working Compaq Presario with nothing but
Ubuntu's on it, Intrepid Beta CD Live reboot or shutdown opens & closes
so quick I can't get the CD out, and even after pushing enter won't let
me remove the diskette, not until reboot resets the computer or until I
power on after shutdown.

My Via motherboard Intel Celeron 32 bit does exactly the same thing,
won't let me remove the disk with rapidfire open-close. I have to do a
hardware reset to eject the CD.

The only reason I think this Thinkpad stays open is because it has a
manual close.

[Bug 259385] Re: Intrepid Alpha 4 Gnome freezes Thinkpad R31

2008-10-20 Thread jerrylamos
As of 200891016 build still fails, both CD Live and installed. I can't
do a CD on 20081019 or 20081020 because of oversize. I don't know how
to overburn to squeeze 701.6 onto a 700 CD, nor do I know how to remove
Gnome games from the iso.

On 200816 I was able to get CD Live to boot by watching for when X windows
initiated, quick do a couple
Ctr;Alt-F1 for command line, then
sudo apt-get remove compiz
sudo apt-get remove compiz-core
Ctrl-Alt-F7 to continue.

On install, check to see if it failed. It did. Boot in rescue mode
select root command line
sudo apt-get remove comp;iz
sudo apt-get remove compiz-core
exit
resume
then boots to Gnome desktop. After removal, then the install just normally
boots to desktop O.K.

If you have any alternatives I could install compiz and try again. The
laptop is dual boot so I can boot on Beta install, get a failure, then
boot on Alpha 5 NOT UPDATED and look around logs, .xsession-errors, etc.

Thanks for your attention. Jerry

See also bug 277344. I sure could use a CD Live boot option to not use
compiz.

Thanks for looking at this bug. Jerry

[Bug 277344] Re: Intrepid CD Live Gnome desktop fails

2008-10-21 Thread jerrylamos
CD Live Intrepid has been too big to fit on a 700 mb CD for the last 3
days so I did this test:

1. Boot installed Intrepid with compiz removed but with all the latest updates
from the internet. O.K.
2. sudo apt-get install compiz. Note, Visual Effects are set to none. Still
running.
3. Restart, with all the latest updates but with compiz installed in step 2.
X comes up, orange screen, and laptop is totally hung up with no keyboard
response except power off. Won't boot even with Visual Effects previously set
to none.
4. Restart in rescue mode, remove compiz, normal boot O.K. without compiz.
5. Happened to have a Gutsy Ubuntu CD Live handy which booted fine, Visual
Effects Normal run fine.

This laptop is dual booted with Alpha 5 NOT UPDATED so I can get the
failure with latest updated Beta then boot the Alpha 5 to look at logs &
messages from the beta if someone would tell me what is significant in
addition to all comments above. I don't think this is a failure of this
particular laptop alone by scanning the Intrepid Ibex forums there are
several posts with similar failures, some of whom have removed compiz
with some benefit.

Thanks for your attention, Jerry

[Bug 277344] Re: Intrepid CD Live Gnome desktop fails

2008-10-11 Thread jerrylamos
Updated Compiz today Oct 11 on Intrepid Beta. PC hUpdated Compiz today
on Intrepid Beta. PC hangs with black screen and frozen spinner at just
the point Gnome should display the desktop.

I'm back to using xfce4 on Ubuntu because I haven't found a clean way to
replace Compiz with Metacity. Anyone any hints?

For that matter, any way to back date Compiz to the original Alpha 5 level?
That's dual booted on this R31 & runs O.K.

[Bug 277344] Re: Intrepid CD Live Gnome desktop fails

2008-10-11 Thread jerrylamos
Workaround for Beta:

Besides:

sudo apt-get remove compiz
sudo apt-get remove compiz-core

I had to edit:

/etc/X11/default-display-manager
#/usr/sbin/gdm

otherwise Firefox gets an authority error and crashes.

switcher also won't load so I start a command line to halt or reboot.

I'll probably find some other bugs as well but at least it's running,
first time since initial Alpha 5. An update to Alpha 5 creamed Compiz
for the Thinkpad, most likely Compiz since it works without it.

[Bug 277344] Re: Intrepid CD Live Gnome desktop fails

2008-10-14 Thread jerrylamos
Daily Build 20071014 CD Live still fails. Boots to black screen where
Gnome desktop should load.

Found a workaround:
Boot CD Live
Watch for X to initialize
Ctrl-Alt-F1(timing dependent, might have to do it a few times)
sudo killall gdm
sudo apt-get remove compiz
sudo apt-get remove compiz-core
sudo startx

and away it goes, booting successfully, gnome desktop and allQ
not quite all - switcher fails, reload? don't reload, to get switcher functions
just do Alt-F2 and enter the command, sudo halt or sudo reboot or sudo whatever.

Sure could use a CD Live boot option to remove compiz!!

[Bug 259385] Re: Intrepid Compiz hangs on login for various hardware

2008-10-27 Thread jerrylamos
For a number of people (like me) the failure occurs so soon login &
Alt+F2 can't be issued.

The metacity --replace & is only temporary and must be repeated on each
boot.

sudo alt-get remove compiz & compiz core fixes it permanently. The side
effects are a slight increase in speed since the compiz code doesn't get
executed, and less "eye candy" if that matters to you.

[Bug 259385] Re: Intrepid Compiz hangs on login for i830MG and i845 video cards

2008-10-31 Thread jerrylamos
My synaptic repositories are already set up for Pre-released updates (intrepid
proposed) so I just cranked up a terminal and did
sudo apt-get install compiz
and as far as I can tell it got all those packages and a few more. I copied
the screen messages if anyone is interested.
Synaptic says the compiz is now 1:0.7.8-0ubuntu4

I don't know how to tell if this is the latest build mentioned
previously. Let me give it a whirl.

Thanks, Jerry

[Bug 259385] Re: Intrepid Compiz hangs on login for i830MG and i845 video cards

2008-10-31 Thread jerrylamos
I don't love the command line but after thrashing around this bug for
two months it's simpler than cranking up Synaptic & doing a search,
flipping thru windows, selecting this that and the other. Lot of mouse
clicks & keystrokes.

Anyway I presume the new build isn't in the repositories yet because
selecting Visual Effects Normal it said "searching for available
drivers" then the screen went to hash and the keyboard died. Rebooting
gave orange screen freeze.

Back up and running by using rescue mode & root shell prompt to remove
compiz, see workaround at the top of the Bug report. Can't do that with
the GUI because it is the GUI that won't start. Compiz is on by
default.

I'll try again tomorrow.

Thanks everyone, Jerry

[Bug 259385] Re: Intrepid Compiz hangs on login for i830MG and i845 video cards

2008-11-01 Thread jerrylamos
Booted with compiz removed, the only way I could boot.
Updated & reloaded Synaptic today Nov 1.
Compiz 1:0.7.8-0ubuntu4.1 now shown, the .1 indicating an update.
Installed compiz with Synaptic.
Visual Effects Normal
"searching for available drivers"
"Desktop effects could not be enabled"
Hooray. The computer ran!
Rebooted and it did!

So the fix to "blacklist" this Intel graphics worked so compiz won't be
run.

Important point - on Ubuntu Forum Installation & Upgrades there are
many! people getting black or tan or orange screens on boot, or other
very similar problems, with a number of different computers and makes of
graphics chips. I've gotten thanks for posting my workaround to remove
compiz before the desktop is activated. How do the developers know how
many of those to "blacklist"?

Thanks much for the fix!
