[Bug 222860] Re: Hardy Xubuntu Shared Folders won't Unlock
Intrepid Alpha 1 Xubuntu shared folders unlock O.K. I can set the workgroup to our chosen local name, and home folder shared setup is fine as verified in /etc/samba/smb.conf. Neither one of these work on Hardy or Gutsy on this Dell Celeron. In those cases I have to manually edit smb.conf to get sharing to work. With all the changes and updates for Intrepid I do not know what fixed the problem. [Bug 253835] [NEW] Intrepid Xubuntu Desktop bottom & top lines missing
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: brdesktop-common Xubuntu Alpha 3 Intrepid Ibex 8.10 installed & running, Xubuntu- restricted, updates, etc. was running O.K. 1.2 mHz Celeron with ATI Radeon graphics. Firefox Yahoo video O.K. Tried Yahoo.com video and Firefox got stuck. Close would not complete. Did a restart, now the desktop background, mouse, & icons come up but not the top & bottom lines (panels). I can start a terminal but of course all the top and bottom line functions are incaccessible. Ctrl-Alt-F1, login, sudo killall GDM, sudo startx gets it going again with complete desktop until I re-boot. Then desktop has only background, icons, & mouse but not top & bottom lines. Somehow a new boot keeps remembering something from the last boot instead of doing a full startx. I've tried different options from the login menu with no help. Any ideas on how to get Xubuntu desktop going again from boot? Any way to get a fresh start short of re-install? The system is dual boot with Ubuntu Intrepid Ibex Alpha 3 8.10. With Ubuntu, so far, when Firefox gets stuck, close does complete and there has not been a problem with getting the desktop restored properly (yet). [Bug 257450] Re: Intrepid Ibex Alpha 3 20080812 updates freeze Thinkpad R31
1. Alpha 4 CD Live boots to the point that the desktop should load then all activity stops and nothing on the keyboard works. I've downloaded about three different daily builds of Alpha 4 Ubuntu with the same result. The CD's do run on my Compaq and my Via motherboard systems. When CD Live stops, of course, can't read any files or logs or anything else since the keyboard is dead except for power off. Note the screen background is either black or brown, and the cursor may move or not. The desktop background never loads. 2. Alpha 3 runs O.K (for an alpha). I've installed it several times. Upgrade everything results in 1. above. I've done that several times. This Thinkpad has run Dapper, Edgy, Feisty, Gutsy, Hardy, and Intrepid Alpha 3. 3. Alpha 3, upgrade everything else except Gnome 2, which is to say at Alpha 4 level for everything but Gnome 2, runs O.K. (for an alpha). I've done this twice. 4. Add just the upgrade for Gnome 2, nothing else, results in 1. above. 5. Alpha 4 CD Live Xubuntu runs O.K. for an Alpha. Kubuntu Alpha 4 runs O.K. for an alpha. No Gnome 2, no problem. 5. I'm dual booted from an Alpha 4 image for everything but Gnome 2 as I enter this comment. Browsing the other install, the one that stops when the Gnome desktop should load, the end of .xsession-errors follows. Looks to me like X found the desktop, which then never appears on the screen: ** (x-session-manager:5263): DEBUG: GsmManager: Looking for: gnome-settings-daemon.desktop ** (x-session-manager:5263): DEBUG: GsmManager: Found in: /etc/xdg/autostart/gnome-settings-daemon.desktop ** (x-session-manager:5263): DEBUG: GsmAutostartApp: setting desktop filename to /etc/xdg/autostart/gnome-settings-daemon.desktop ** (x-session-manager:5263): DEBUG: GsmManager: read gnome-settings-daemon.desktop ** (x-session-manager:5263): DEBUG: GsmStore: Adding object id /org/gnome/SessionManager/App1 to store ** (x-session-manager:5263): DEBUG: GsmManager: Looking for: gnome-wm.desktop ** (x-session-manager:5263): DEBUG: GsmManager: Found in: /usr/share/gnome/autostart/gnome-wm.desktop Let me know if I can look for anything else. [Bug 318485] Re: jaunty Xubuntu Alpha 3 manual install fails
Colin, yes, /dev/sda10 was a bootable live cd image. This is based on https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Information/FromLinux which was designed to be able to boot from a hard disk partition and then install. I boot on a real CD Rom. Somehow, Grub or whoever is doing the boot, switches over to the image on /dev/sda10. The real CD is then interpreted as a package CD instead of the boot CD. Whoever is doing the boot then makes a mount point of /cdom on /dev/sda10, even though that was not the image that was really booted. Manual Install then fails as described in this bug report, since whoever is doing the boot has /dev/sda10 locked. So what, there are no changes to be done to the partition table, and https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Information/FromLinux was developed to allow installs. Attached is a gparted image done on the live CD just after the failed manual install. Following that will be an attachment showing what manual install saw. It doesn't see the mount points or the locked partition. I did format /dev/sda10 and was then able to boot from the CD and complete manual install successfully of 20090130 (usual jaunty sound and splash bugs etc.). Thanks for your question. [Bug 385947] Re: [i845g] karmic CD Live black screen i840 video
Geir, As soon as gdm starts it switches up a black screen and the pc stops altogether. No keyboard keys do anything, example Ctrl-Alt-F1 doesn't do anything, so there's no way to get into the system at all. The only key that works is power off. What I need is a way to start X without starting Gnome. I don't know enough about X to do that; the closest I came was to boot recovery mode from the CD, at the menu choose root prompt, do nano /etc/X11/xorg.conf to enter the ModeDebug true, then do: /etc/init.d/gdm restart && /etc/init.d/gdm stop. That seemed to do a gdm start followed shortly by a stop, which it did before GNOME hung the system. I don't know if there is enough in the Xorg.0.log to indicate a problem. Attached is an Xorg.0.log from that try, as saved on a partition. There is a whole lot of dumpregs at the bottom, I wouldn't know from the problem or from stopping gdm. I need a way to stop GNOME before the black screen switches up, or else a way to start X without starting GNOME. maybe the system will still be alive enough to save the Xorg.0.log. Gnome does a hard hang to everything. The processor chip stops executing any instructions at all. I don't know the linux commands that well. Let me look in a couple books. [Bug 259385] Re: [i845] Intrepid Compiz freezes on login for i830MG, i845, (and i945GM?) video cards
Bryce, I'm not sure what you want tested. I looked at the notes preceding yours and they mentioned a bunch of different things to try. Perhaps you mean the (Bleeding-Edge) in ubuntuforums Jaunty Intel Performance Guide? Here's where I am. Everything's running karmic updated as of today, however there haven't been many updates the last few days. i845 on this IBM ThinkCentre A30 tower 2 gHz Celeron 1 gb memory with karmic will run: Driver "Intel" Option "AccelMethod" "uxa" Option "Tiling" "false" # tiling scrambles up GlxGears display it runs GtkPerf of 38 to 41. Flash video jerky. With Driver "vesa" it runs GtkPerf of 28 to 29. Flash video jerky. (!). Go figure. Obviously I run with "vesa" on the i845, except for testing purposes. I'm into applications, firefox, flash video internet news, openoffice write & calc, internet mail, digital picture manipulation, ... so I consider Compiz a hindrance because it steals CPU cycles for fancy desktop effects. Hence I turn it off even on the pc's where it will work. i830 on IBM Thinkpad R31 1.0 gHz Celeron karmic Driver "vesa" gets flickering black screen. Can't use "vesa". With default driver 2.7.0 which says it is for i830M etc. in Xorg.0.log I assume it's running "uxa". GtkPerf is about 35. Flash video jerky. On Thinkpad T40 ati video GtkPerf is about 13. That's a 1.5 gHz Pentium, karmic. Flash video good. On Compaq Presario ati video 3.3 gHz GtkPerf gets 10 or a little less. Flash video nice. Conclusion the i845 Celeron 2.0 gHz is relatively slower which was my opinion even on XP. Jaunty and Karmic have not been usable on the i830 because of "font smear", see Bugzilla bug 21415. Intrepid runs fine, granted I don't do Compiz. They claim to have a fix in process but I don't know how to test it, or whether Ubuntu will pick up the fix. Do you have any clue? Let me have a go at karmic with (Bleeding-Edge) suggestions on the i830. It's a bit of a slog to do much with the fonts smearing all the time making it hard to read the screen. i845 should be doable if I can understand & follow the myriad steps. [Bug 394422] [NEW] KMS karmic black screen i830 video
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xorg karmic 2.6.31.-1 has KMS on as default. Will not boot on IBM Thinkpad R31 with i830 graphics. Boot proceeds to black screen with white arrow then goes black altogether. Keyboard doesn't work. Mouse doesn't work. Cannot ssh in from the local network because the Thinkpad is stopped altogether. Cannot run ubuntu-bug xorg since thinkpad can't run anything at that point. Dual booted to intrepid (runs fine!) to get syslog, Xorg.0.log, .xsession-errors. There is no crash report. lspci-vvnn from the Thinkpad R31. Do note 2.6.31-1 still has the "font smear" problem that upstream video says is fixed on bugzilla 21415. Either their fix doesn't work or else Ubuntu hasn't picked it up. There's a launchpad bug # 304514 for that. Much less of a problem than "it doesn't boot at all" which is this bug I'm entering. [Bug 395365] [NEW] karmic console restart while entering data in Office Spreadsheet

I tried booting in recovery and adding Driver "ati" to xorg.conf which didn't change the failure at all. Booting in recovery mode without quiet or splash did not change the failure. My Radeon Xpress 200 fails the same way, Compaq Presario 3.3 gHz Celeron. My Radeon Mobility 7500 Thinkpad T40 works O.K. (with usual karmic A2 bugs). My Intel i845 works O.K. (with ) including the very annoying random console logouts. gdm is O.K. Do note on the i845, the vaunted KMS with "accelerations" is 71% slower than the old "vesa" on GtkPerf a benchmark available from Synaptic. In particular the progress bar test is several times slower. On Radeon Mobility 7500 with KMS performance with GtkPerf is about the same as it was before. The good news is with today's 20090704 update karmic 2.6.31-1 boots and runs on i830 on this Thinkpad R31. The bad news it is s-l-o-w. Using a video intensive benchmark in this case GtkPerf from Ubuntu Synaptic: Intrepid runs in 36.0 seconds karmic_ runs in 65.8 seconds. Karmic 2.6.31-1 is 83% slower! In particular the progress bar test runs in intrepid 1.36 seconds karmic_ 4.23 seconds Oof. What has KMS mode=1 done to us compared to Intel driver module 2.4.1? Well anyway karmic boots & runs so the problem as written is fixed for the moment (wait for the next update). Thanks, Jerry Do note the font smearing problem is still very much with us, with several characters appearing as black blotches for example U and j and O and K and Upstream thinks they fixed this see Bugzilla 21415 and Launchpad #304514. -- KMS karmic black screen i830 video https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/394422 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Font smear very much still with us on karmic 2.6.31-1 as updated on 20090704. Either Ubuntu never picked up the fix from upstream on bugzilla 21415 or else the fix doesn't work or whatever. For useful work on this IBM Thinkpad R31 it's still Intrepid which doesn't smear. Jaunty and karmic do. *** This bug is a duplicate of bug 259385 *** https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/259385 Personal opinion, having been pagued by this problem since August 13: 1. Compiz developers being so fascinated by new "eye candy" tricks on high end hardware they forgot about the base of people out there running on Intel (heard of them?) hardware & drivers. 2. Deciding to abandon the 8.04 compiz code for the (vast number) of users that 8.10 fails on. 3. Decision to make compiz default forgetting about the base of people out there My opinion, since I don't count, just an "ordinary user" testing fragile early builds: If existing 8.04 package runs on the configuration, new 8.10 doesn't, have install put the right package on. As of 200891016 build still fails, both CD Live and installed. I can't do a CD on 20081019 or 20081020 because of oversize. I don't know how to overburn to squeeze 701.6 onto a 700 CD, nor do I know how to remove Gnome games from the iso. On 200816 I was able to get CD Live to boot by watching for when X windows initiated, quick do a couple Ctr;Alt-F1 for command line, then sudo apt-get remove compiz sudo apt-get remove compiz-core Ctrl-Alt-F7 to continue. On install, check to see if it failed. It did. Boot in rescue mode select root command line sudo apt-get remove comp;iz sudo apt-get remove compiz-core exit resume then boots to Gnome desktop. After removal, then the install just normally boots to desktop O.K. If you have any alternatives I could install compiz and try again. Restart in rescue mode, remove compiz, normal boot O.K. without compiz. 5. Happened to have a Gutsy Ubuntu CD Live handy which booted fine, Visual Effects Normal run fine. I don't love the command line but after thrashing around this bug for two months it's simpler than cranking up Synaptic & doing a search, flipping thru windows, selecting this that and the other. Lot of mouse clicks & keystrokes. Anyway I presume the new build isn't in the repositories yet because selecting Visual Effects Normal it said "searching for available drivers" then the screen went to hash and the keyboard died. Rebooting gave orange screen freeze. Back up and running by using rescue mode & root shell prompt to remove compiz, see workaround at the top of the Bug report. Visual Effects Normal "searching for available drivers" "Desktop effects could not be enabled" Hooray. The computer ran! Rebooted and it did!
