[Bug 298323] [NEW] Can't find KPPP on Kubuntu 8.10 distro CD-ROM
Public bug reported: I installed Kubuntu 8.10 in a dual boot configuration from the final release CD-ROM obtained from LinuxCD.org. Since the only Internet connection I have in my rather rural location is dial-up, the KPPP utility is essential to my utilization of Kubuntu. KPPP has been present in previous versions of the distribution disk, so I ASSUME that it was removed from this release because of a mistaken assumption that the growing availability of broadband relegated this utility to something that was rarely used. I ASSUME that I can obtain this utility from the Ubuntu Repository by simply taking my computer to someplace where broadband is available. Although Kubuntu 8.04 is working in my other hard disk partition (with functional KPPP), I do not know how to use that version to obtain the KPPP utility from the Intrepid Repository and properly transport and install the software to the Itrepid partition of my machine. (Could such a workaround might be the subject of a release note?) Hardware notes: I am running an IBM Thinkpad T40 Type 2373-8CU. The hardware modem was not detected in Kubuntu 8.04 and previous versions so that I am using a Zoom USB modem series 1063. with a driver supplied by Zoom. Note also that I couldn't find the Gnome equivalent to KPPP on the final release CD-ROM for Ubuntu 8.10 obtained from the same source. Hence my assumption to replace KPPP with more appealing 'goodies' because of a mistaken assumption about its current usefulness. ** Affects: ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Can't find KPPP on Kubuntu 8.10 distro CD-ROM https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/298323 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 165098] hwdb-kde lies about sending data to Ubuntu server
Public bug reported: When running Kubuntu Hardware Database program in Kubuntu v 7.10 (running Live from the CD ROM), the program claimed that the data was sent to a Ubuntu server, even though I was NOT connected to the Internet. Also When running Kubuntu Hardware Database program in Kubuntu v 7.04 (installed) connected to the Internet using a USB Modem, the program likewise claimed that the data was sent to a Ubuntu server. However by using the supplied query button, the program denied that the data had been written to that server. Note that this bug may be related to #19414, but I am reporting it again because previous postings to that bug stopped about the time of the release of Kubuntu v 7.04. Note also that when this program (and its Gnome cousin) are performing properly, it should be of great value to the Community Component of the Laptop Testing Program by allowing bug chasers to see precisely what hardware is contained within a given laptop. Likewise fixing this problem and adding a field to Launchpad to record the hardware database record for the original bug report (and each comment?) ought to help bug chasers to determine if a given bug is hardware related. Another thought, if this program is working properly and is properly utilized by Ubuntu users, if the Hardware Database is not properly secured from unauthorized access (ad nauseum), a hacker from anywhere on the Internet could determine precisely what hardware was on a given machine which might help in gaining unauthorized remote access to the machine! ** Affects: ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: New -- hwdb-kde lies about sending data to Ubuntu server https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/165098 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 87442] Can't find PCMCIA controller in KinfoCenter
Public bug reported: The Asus A2H Laptop (marked A2500H on underside) that I deliberately purchased from Sub300.com because of their dedication to Linspire, is still running on Linspire 5.0.347 because I discovered the hard way that Linspire 5.1.427 can't find its PCMCIA controller. I just received Freespire 1.0.3 from LinuxCD.org and proved in Live mode that it can't find my PCMCIA controller either. Note that I use this laptop for my most important personal purposes, and am thus reluctant to even partition its hard disk to install even stable versions of Freespire or other distributions. Note that I have no other hardware available, and even worse my very rural location restricts me to a dial-up connection to the net. Note that I use this laptop for my most important personal purposes, and am thus reluctant to even partition its hard disk to install even stable versions of Freespire or other distributions. I use a PCMCIA hardware modem on this laptop because the installed Linspire compliant Winmodem was zapped by lightning. Note that I have no other hardware available, and even worse my very rural location restricts me to a dial-up connection to the net. Note Linspire 5.0.347 is satisfactory for most of my purposes, but my problems with Linspire 5.1.427, Freespire 1.0.3 and Kubuntu 6.10 and the fact that Sub300.com no longer sells this model of laptop suggests that the problem will persist in Linspire 6.0 (which now follows the Ubuntu Feisty Fawn and subsequent Freespire 2.0). Taking inspiration from the news of Linspire/Freespire's shift to the Ubuntu base, the following tests have been conducted in Live Mode using CD-ROM obtained from LinuxCD.org. Kubuntu 6.10 Live doesn't seem to find my PCMCIA controller in its KinfoCenter, but it is possible I wasn't looking in the right place. Debian Live KDE 'Casper' KinfoCenter says very clearly no PCMCIA controller detected. Note there was an error in initiallizing the sound driver. Knoppix 5.0.1 found the PCMCIA controller and the modem without difficulty. Damn Small Linux 3.2 Live found the PCMCIA and modem without difficulty. Fedora Core 6 Live-spin CD KDE couldn't find PCMCIA controller. Note that a Linspire Diagnostic Report has been generated from Linspire 5.0.347 and can be transmitted elsewhere upon request. As a Linspire 'insider' the problem has been reported to Linspire support but they appear to have lost my reports or sone such nonsense. :-( Submitting a diagnostic report from within Kubuntu is not feasable since I can't connect to the internet from this location without using the internet. ** Affects: Ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: Unconfirmed -- Can't find PCMCIA controller in KinfoCenter https://launchpad.net/bugs/87442 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 87442] Re: Can't find PCMCIA controller in KinfoCenter
I obtained a copy of Kubuntu 7.04-Herd5 Desktop Live-install Disc for i386 from www.linuxcd.org and ran it briefly in Live mode for testing purposes. I returned to KinfoCenter but was again unable to find any entry whatsoever for my PCMCIA controller. I also tried to set up my modem but /dev/modem was as unsuccessful in finding my PCMCIA modem as the Kubuntu 6.10 test. Note Linspire 5.1.427 and Freespire 1.0.3 has the same difficulty here, while in Linspire 5.0.347 /dev/modem ignores the WinModem without comment and finds the PCMCIA modem when it is installed in my machine. For the record the modem is a Creative Modem Blaster v.92 PCMCIA DI5611 and I understand that it is a hardware modem. Under Linspire 5.0.347 the operating system beeps once when I remove the modem from its slot and beeps twice as I slide it back in. Since I was likewise unable to connect to the internet while running Kubuntu 7.04-Herd5, I did not run the diagnostic tests requested. But having lost Cris Rose' E-mail address, I noticed an opportunity to upload the Linspire Diagnostic Report to the page for this bug at launchpad.net and thus tried to do so, but this file again appears too large for acceptance by the server (14.4 Mb). -- Can't find PCMCIA controller in KinfoCenter https://launchpad.net/bugs/87442 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 569214] Re: Ubuntu 10.04-rc desktop installer unreverable error
This issue has been SOMEWHAT resolved in the final release. On the first of two tries with a CD-ROM burned from the ISO that I downloaded on Apr 29, 2010, the machine booted nicely, I checked the disk for errors (none) and then entered into a Live session without any problems whatsoever. However, I had to reboot halfway through system testing because of a failure of video modes that I don't normally use. On second reboot from the CD-ROM I waited through the timeout and thus went directly to the Live session. The unrecoverable message DID appear, but that did not stop progress into the live session. -- Ubuntu 10.04-rc desktop installer unreverable error https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/569214 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 469378] [NEW] Sound will not turn on in Ubuntu 9.10 Final
Public bug reported: I reported this bug through 'Report a problem' in Firefox (misleading) because the 'Sound Preferences' module of the Ubuntu 9.10 Final Release OS doesn't have a 'Report a problem' option. Also, this option isn't available in the blue question mark either! When I right click on the speaker symbol on the upper right corner of the screen, I am presented with a check mark against the word mute. Simply touching the touch pad on my Asus A2H (a2500h) laptop computer with the cursor on the checkbox does NOT turn on the sound. Note that hitting the right button on the touch pad does work. Note that within the larger Sound Preferences box, the mute button can be check and unchecked by simply touching the touchpad when the cursor is positioned over the checkbox (desired behavior). I followed the instruction that should have appended a description of my sound system to this report. Although it must be standard procedure, I firmly believe that Kamus is chasing a 'wild goose', as the problem must be related to the coding of the CHECKBOX for the Mute switch obtained when I right click on the speaker box at the very top right of the screen. This particular checkbox does not respond to simply tapping the touchbad on my Asus A2H (A2500H) laptop, as other checkboxes do. Note that the checkbox for the Mute Switch in the main 'Sound Preferences' module reponds correctly! [Bug 569219] [NEW] Ubuntu 10.04 BETA-2 sound does not work
Public bug reported: When running the System Test program of Ubuntu 10.04 BETA-2 - LIVE from CD-ROM on my IBM Thinkpad T42, the sound output test failed on both internal speaker and headphone. As a result, I had to skip all microphone testing. Note that sound output issues should have been reported by System Test. Since the RELEASE CANDIDATE is out, I was on the verge of testing the issue again, but I ran into a more serious problem with the desktop installer (reported separately). For my convenience, I am reporting this bug from my very operational Ubuntu 9.10 OS in the hope that you will be able to obtain my hardware configuration. I just placed my 10.04 Beta-2 CD-ROM in a bag that will EVENTUALLY be recycled, but I can extract it and resubmit this bug report from running that disk LIVE if it would be helpful for debugging purposes. Note that I will not upgrade from 9.10 to 10.04 until I am persuaded that the sound issue on this machine is successfully resolved. [Bug 582032] [NEW] Firefox mozilla build for 3.6.3 failed
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: firefox Shortly after upgrading from Ubuntu 9.10 to 10.04, Ubuntuzilla notified me that I should upgrade Firefox from 3.6.0 to 3.6.3 following the instructions at the Ubuntuzilla Website. Since I also had problems with Thunderbird after the Ubuntu upgrade, I also arranged to upgrade Thunderbird to 3.0.4 (which apparently succeeded). Note that the system saved a crash report, but when I followed through, the report was trashed since Firefox is not an official Ubuntu package. Given the way that Linux developers OUGHT to be working together, I am surprised that the crash report was trashed -- instead of being carefully saved so that it could be turned over to the Mozilla developers. Indeed, it could even possible that after 'finger pointing' exercises have finished, it could even turn out to be a joint problem. I am also a bit upset about the strictness of Cannonical policies about application upgrades between operating system upgrades, as it interferes with the ability of the user to keep his/her system up to date, driving users to extremes such as employed by the Ubuntuzilla team. The Ubuntuzilla build process failed, in Ubuntu 10.04 leaving me with the Firefox 3.6 that resulted from my Ubuntu upgrade from 9.10 to 10.04. Note that you may wish to take issue with the trashing of a crash report due to it originating in a non-ubuntu product! [Bug 447606] Re: Internal microphone doesn't work Ubuntu 9.10 beta
I discovered during the sound test two steps hence that the sound was muted which might have affected the test. Thus to insure accuracy, the speaker tests in the System test Utility should be moved to precede the microphone tests, and should also test to see if the sound is muted or sound volume is set too low for audio to be heard. However, I ran the test again and it still didn't work. -- Internal microphone doesn't work Ubuntu 9.10 beta https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/447606 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Public bug reported: When running Firefox 3.5 and also System Test Utility on Ubuntu 9.10 Beta in Live mode on Asus A2500H Laptop, the trackpad moves the cursor rather nicely. [Bug 460742] [NEW] booting thru wubi.exe doesn't identify Ubuntu version
Public bug reported: I have an Asus A2H (A2500H) laptop that I have set up as dual boot Windows XP & Ubuntu 9.04. For testing purposes I have installed Ubuntu 9.10 RC using Wubi.exe on the Windows XP partition. Thus to run Ubuntu 9.10 RC, I choose Windows XP from the first Grub menu which lists various kernels of 9.04, I then Choose Ubuntu from the second menu for which the alternative is Windows XP. On the third menu, I choose generic Ubuntu with a kernel number (the first choice), followed by all of my Ubuntu 9.04 kernel alternatives. My problem is that the first choice isn't identified as Ubuntu 9.10, in a manner identical to how it would have been identified in a normal dual boot installation! Some bugs that I am reporting in the current round are repeated from the Beta round for reasons I can well understand. :-( My problem is that there isn't an option in the bug listing provided by bugs.launchpad.net to list all of the bugs that I have reported so that I can add a report that what I reported in Beta still exists in RC, etc. Also nice would be the ability to report that a given problem has apparently been resolved to my satisfaction. [Bug 460778] [NEW] Ubuntu Software Center fails to catagorize by Ubuntu/Kubuntu/Xubuntu/Lubuntu
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: software-center I am testing Ubuntu 9.10 RC as installed by Wubi.exe on a Windows XP partition on an Asus A2H (A2500H) laptop that also contains a partion for Ubunu 9.04. In using the new Ubuntu Software Center, I am dismayed that the display fails to include options to merely list software that is appropriate for an Ubuntu (Gnome) system, Kubuntu (KDE) system, Xubuntu (Xcfe), Lubuntu (Lxfe), etc. Since I am currently running an Ubuntu (Gnome) system, I TRY to avoid choosing software that uses KDE, Xcfe, Lxfe libraries in an effort to keep the size of my system down (there may be other reasons as well). Note that some software such as Firefox doesn't use any of these libraries and thus are appropriate under every option. I recognize that critics will classify this problem as a missing 'feature'. But note that the Add/Remove Software in previous releases of Ubuntu/Kubuntu always had an option to show just Gnome based software or just KDE based software. But that display failed to provide options for XCFE and the new LXFE. Furthermore when using those options, that display failed to show software like Firefox that is appropriate for any GUI. While I am at it, why is Ubuntu Software Center listed at the bottom of the Applications menu and doesn't ask for my password before usage, whereas Synaptic Package Manager is listed in the Administration submenu of the System Menu and demands my password before entry? [Bug 461448] [NEW] Kinfo Center added to Ubuntu 9.10 RC but not on menu
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: software-center Last night, I used Ubuntu Software Center on my Ubuntu 9.10 RC system (on an Asus A2H [A2500H] laptop) to add Kinfo Center. I realize that Kinfo Center is KDE on a Gnome system, but my purpose was to try to determine if this release can find my PCMCIA card controller (an old problem). Tonight, I started to complete this task, but can't find Kinfo Center in any of the menus. Note that Ubuntu Software Center confirms that the software is installed. I tested this bug again for Ubuntu 9.10 Final Release that I reported as Bug #447624 on my Asus A2H (A2500H). When run Live mode, the test performed by Systems Test worked very nicely. But after installation on my Windows XP SP3 partition using Wubi.exe, System Test mode tested the primary video mode, but failed to cycle through all the others as it did in Live mode. Is this an artifact of the Wubi created environment or the Windows partition? Is it just a problem with Systems testing (checkbox) program? [Bug 464209] [NEW] Uninstall of Wubi.exe doesn't restore Windows XP SP3 boot sector
Public bug reported: I installed Ubuntu 9.10 RC in the Windows XP SP3 partition (dual boot with Ubuntu 9.04) for testing purposes. Now that I have Ubuntu 9.10 Final Release in hand, I executed the Wubi Uninstall program that I saw in the Ubuntu folder of my Windows directory. After that finished and the system shut down, I started through the Windows XP boot process to make sure that Windows XP was still operational. I thus chose Windows XP in the first choice (as usual). But the surprise was the second step to choose between Windows and Ubuntu. Just looking for trouble after another reboot, I checked the Ubuntu branch and found: Windows could not start because the following file was corrupt/missing: \system32\hal.dll Please reinstall copy to above file. Note that after rebooting again and properly choosing Windows at that step, Windows XP appears to start properly. Note also that I successfully installed Ubuntu 9.10 Final Release, again using Wubi.exe from its respective Distribution CD-ROM and the three step (because of my dual boot environment) boot process into Ubuntu 9.10 Final Release works very nicely. I just added Adobe Acrobat Reader 9 to my Ubuntu Linux 10.10 system (via Ubuntu Software Center), then tried to open my own copy of the pdf file attached to this bug report, WITHOUT SUCCESS. This test strongly suggests that the PDF output from Open Office is guilty of not meeting the standard set by Adobe Acrobat, and that gMail concurs in that judgement. [Bug 685072] [NEW] gMail thinks PDF file via CUPS from Open Office is damaged
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: openoffice.org I wrote a document in Open Office, then used CUPS to write a PDF file to my hard drive, then attached that PDF file to a message in gMail (www.google.com/gmail). The file uploads successfully, and I am able to download the PDF file again from my gMail 'sent' directory and view it with the Document Viewer utility. However, when I try to 'view' the file directly from the gMail website, gMail complains that the document is damaged. When I scan an existing printed document using Xsane and save the image in PDF format, I don't have this problem! It appears to me that this a disagreement between CUPS and gMail as to what constitutes a valid PDF file. But Open Office might be a contributor to the problem. I assume that resolving this bug will require cooperation from Google.com! [Bug 945865] [NEW] Ububtu 12.04 i386 Beta-1 will not run on IBM Thinkpad T42
Public bug reported: Ububtu 12.04 i386 Beta-1 will not run on IBM Thinkpad T42. I downloaded ubuntu-12.04-beta1-desktop-i386.iso today (Mar 3, 2012) for the purpose of testing the beta-1 release on my IBM Thinkpad T42 Laptop computer. I then used k3b to burn a CD-ROM. I then resterted the computer with the intent of running the CD-ROM in 'LIVE' mode. Much to my amazement, I received an error report from the disk reporting that the kernel demands features not present in the cpu of the laptop! Note that I got the same reaction from a CD-ROM burned from kubuntu-12.04-beta1-desktop-i386! What happened to the reputation that Ubuntu will run very nicely on older computers? Note that I am currently running Ubuntu 11.04 which will loose its support in the fall of 2012 (18 months from release) ** Affects: ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/945865 Title: Ububtu 12.04 i386 Beta-1 will not run on IBM Thinkpad T42 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/945865/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
