Public bug reported: When running Kubuntu Hardware Database program in Kubuntu v 7.10 (running Live from the CD ROM), the program claimed that the data was sent to a Ubuntu server, even though I was NOT connected to the Internet.
Also When running Kubuntu Hardware Database program in Kubuntu v 7.04 (installed) connected to the Internet using a USB Modem, the program likewise claimed that the data was sent to a Ubuntu server. However by using the supplied query button, the program denied that the data had been written to that server. Note that this bug may be related to #19414, but I am reporting it again because previous postings to that bug stopped about the time of the release of Kubuntu v 7.04. Note also that when this program (and its Gnome cousin) are performing properly, it should be of great value to the Community Component of the Laptop Testing Program by allowing bug chasers to see precisely what hardware is contained within a given laptop. Likewise fixing this problem and adding a field to Launchpad to record the hardware database record for the original bug report (and each comment?) ought to help bug chasers to determine if a given bug is hardware related. Another thought, if this program is working properly and is properly utilized by Ubuntu users, if the Hardware Database is not properly secured from unauthorized access (ad nauseum), a hacker from anywhere on the Internet could determine precisely what hardware was on a given machine which might help in gaining unauthorized remote access to the machine! ** Affects: ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: New -- hwdb-kde lies about sending data to Ubuntu server https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/165098 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
