Re: [RBW] Re: Chilly Hilly?
Here's my East Coast perspective on the Chilly Hilly - i"m visiting family in Seattle (I live near DC). I rode Chilly Hilly with my son-in-law, but didn't mention to the list because I knew we were going to take a later ferry. We rode to the ferry from West Seattle and after getting caught because the lower bridge was opened, we took the 9:35 ferry. First half of the ride was cloudy, a occasional spitting rain - but it snowed a bit, hailed a bit and then rained the entire last 15 miles, plus wind and rain blasted us on the ride back to West Seattle. You would not have recognized me -- as I was riding a mint green Trek Pure step-through townie bike! Nothing "Riv" about me yesterday except my wool jersey - safely secured under my pink jacket. It's my daughter's bike and luckily it has low gears. My son-in-law was on an MB-2 with a Carradice bag in back and banana bag in front. (If anyone happened to see either of us.) A number of riders commented on my bike...it certainly was distinctive among the bikes I saw on Bainbridge. Here's my perspective: 1) If this ride had been in the DC area, there wouldn't have been over 3,000 riders (the count I heard, and yes, I know there are usually 5,000). In DC there would have been 300, weather-wimps that we are. 2) I saw many many more steel bikes yesterday than I see in the DC area, I mean, more in one day yesterday than I see in a month or two! I saw an Atlantis and a Hillborne and spoke to both but they just said hello and went on by. Doing CH gave me a good idea of what it's like to bike here year round. So with the new Bombadil single-speed build completed the day before, I decided to combine some errands with a little culture injection. Delaware has a lot of really wonderful museums within easy biking distance of my house. I decided to set off for a couple of historical sites along the Brandywine Creek – Breck’s Mill, a historic district centered around a beautiful stone mill with bell tower built along the Brandywine Creek in 1816, and Hagley Museum, which preserves the original DuPont family gunpowder mill (the foundation for today’s DuPont Company). As I rode the Bombadil on its inaugural ride down the long hill from my house to the Brandywine, I noticed a distinctive and pleasant (but also a little alarming) smell of wood smoke – the result of forgetting that this is the first bike I’ve ridden with no means of braking except the bike’s caliper brakes on its wooden rims, and consequently applying the brakes on the long downhill the same way I would on alloy rims. I quickly adjusted to harder applications in shorter bursts, which solved the problem. However, at the bottom of the hill, I also learned that my habit of keeping the brakes applied after I stop (I don’t know where that habit comes from, and I wasn’t aware of it until yesterday’s episode) is not a good one when riding a bike with caliper brakes on wood rims – because when I released the brakes and tried to start up again, I discovered that the cork pads had gently bonded with the varnish on the wooden rims. Easily released, and lesson learned. With those two adjustments in my braking habits, the new Bombadil performed very well – it’s a lovely frame for a single speed. Although I will say that the beautiful wooden rims make the speed abatement process, even with cork pads installed in the Bruce Gordon cantis, a bit more of an adventure than I’m used to! [RBW] Set of 26" Synergy wheels
This is a request for help pricing a set of Velocity Synergy wheels - for the family of a friend who died riding his bike about 8 weeks ago. He had a brand new - still with foam blocks on the outside of the hubs - set of 26 inch wheels - 32 spoke, DT Swiss, with Deore LX hubs, and the built by Rich Lesnik yellow sticker on the rim. A new roll of rim tape is wedged in the spokes. He had a small Surly LHT (46cm), so maybe these wheels were to replace what's on the Surly - we don't really know why he bought them. The Surly is just a couple of years old and his other bike is a titanium Seven with 650C wheels.Anyway, they were holding a yard sale today and when I got there, I saw the rims were priced at $40 and I told them 'no way' and to put them aside and I would find out what they're worth. What is a fair price for this set of rims? And would anyone like them - (plus shipping, I think)? They're going to sell the Seven on ebay so they can sell the rims there as well. [RBW] Re: Gray Whale 200K & handlebar bag
Thanks for the terrific write up on the brevet. As for handlebar bags: for touring (which I do with only rear panniers as I motel tour), I use a lightweight small bag on my handlebars that carries my point&shoot digital camera and food. The bag is an unmentionable brand but it is quite light. A headlight would still fit on the top of the bars. I cannot notice any difference in handling of the Bleriot (or for that matter, the Waterford) with that small bag. And since I mostly ride both bikes without a bag, I think I would notice if the bag had some effect. If needed, I can unzip the bag, grab a bar, tear the wrapper with my teeth and eat it while riding. Not my first choice, but I've done it to hang with folks.A small, light bag might work on the Roadeo. Happy riding,JoanJan 3, 2011 08:51:25 PM, rbw-owners-bunch@googlegroups.com wrote:Congrats. [RBW] Re: Now Chilly Hilly - Question
Hey - I've been thinking about doing the Chilly Hilly - but...I'm in the DC area, my daughter lives in Seattle and I visit a lot. I don't have a bike in Seattle (yet!) but she has a 'town bike' - some low gears but definitely not in any way similar to my Bleriot (or other bikes). Very upright position, kind of 'crank forward' design (it's a Trek Pure). How hilly is the ride? What kind of bikes do people generally ride for it? I mean, I'm used to hills, just not sure if this bike is appropriate for the ride. Thanks for any help,JoanPS - my daughter lives in West Seattle but won't ride on streets - at least not yet (she's only had the bike a few months). My granddaughter just got a bike at 4, so I'm hoping we can nudge my daughter's comfort level up so she can at least do some errands in her low traffic neighborhood.Jan 23, 2011 08:31:25 PM, rbw-owners-bunch@googlegroups.com wrote:Definitely a possibility, might bring the lady along too, on our 'newto us' tandem...AndyOn Jan 23, 10:44 am, Benedikt wrote:> Any Seattle Riv owners plan on riding Chilly Hilly this year? [RBW] Re: Derailleur Cabling and Bleriot
My Bleriot arrived from Rivendell with short flexible plastic tubing on the cables under the bottom bracket. Looks flimsy and I've re-cabled the bike and re-used them. I didn't see any point in trying to make that frame into something it wasn't intended to be." I agree with that. When I think of my Romulus, I know it was designed around the Shimano medium reach brakes and for 28mm tires with fenders or up to 37mm without. That determined the design details of the whole bike. As it is, that's pretty darn versatile! It is a "road" bike, afterall. I run mine with 28s and fenders, and I've been riding 35mm Paselas, and those are a dream - I would say almost equal to a CdlV. One can always get another bike built around 650B - and the producers mentioned earlier are not the only ones - seems like younger Rando riders and custom builders are really going after the "classic" 650B rando bike. All this being said, I just did my first long-ish ride on the Hetres now on my 650B Custom Protovelo (kinda like a Saluki). Wow. Those are some fast, smooth tires. Its like they're not even there like you're floating along -- and fast! And with the 38mm Grand Bois and the Pari-Motos coming down the pipe, they should offer some very nice 650B performance options for distance events and general distance/ camping riding. I really do wish Rivendell offered 650B in the larger sizes, up to 62cm. I don't know whay I like 650B so much - it doesn't make much sense. True, there's nothing in 700c that can equal the Hetre, and the same will probably be the case for the new 650B tires. One can always go Riv custom for that Grant magic! [RBW] Replace bottom bracket question
I had my 7 year old bike repainted (actually powder coated). Inside the frame in a few places, there was some surface rust, completely removed as part of the preparation process. The original bottom bracket (Shimano BB 6500), which of course was removed prior to sending the frame away, has some surface rust. Most of it is near the thicker right hand side. The worst is a one inch square patch that I've tried gently to remove but isn't budging. I'm not much of a mechanic and I'm hoping the collective wisdom here can help me with whether or not I should replace the bottom bracket. But thunderstorms canoccur anywhere. Even if you are not killed by a lightning strike, yourlife can be severely altered. It pays to have some knowledge andremain aware.I am a forecaster for the National Weather Service (NWS) in Colorado. Here is the NWS lightning safety recommendationshttp://www.srh.noaa.gov/jetstream//lightning/lightning_safety.htmUnfortunately in my opinion the NWS is dropping theball with lightning safety. "When thunder roars go indooors" justdoesn't woork for those of us on long bike rides, hikes, etc.The NWS has also thrown out the 6 mile rule. Really if you can hearthunder, you are in danger. To measure lightning distance, use thefact that the speed of sound is roughly 1000ft/sec. Measure timebetween flash and boom, then divide by 5 to get miles. But better than this, be situationally aware. Get a forecast beforeyou go out, especially if you will be out for many hours or days. Lightning bolts off the sides or tops of thunderstorms canstrike many miles away from the base and are some of the mostpowerfullightning stikes. http://www.crh.noaa.gov/pub/ltg/crh_boltblue.phpIf somehow you still screw up and get yourself near a sparkingthundertorm, stay away from high trees, poles, exposed mountainridges, water. Then get to lower ground as fast as possible. Watch outfor drainge bottoms though where flash flooding is possible. If thingsget really bad, lower yourself as much as possible but stay on yourfeet. You do not want to lay flat and put your heart right next to theground. CPR is a very effective treament for those who are struck andnot breathing. The NWS recommends that if you can hear thunder, you are in danger. And the 30 rule says, stay under shelter until 30 minutes after youlast hear thunder. I can say that if I followed that rule, I wouldn'tbe out for most summer afternoons or early evenings. Lightning safetyis about risk analysis and informed choices. There's a 9 am ride Sunday morning the 7th to celebrate the Cirque du Cyclisme. We'll have free admission for those attending the ride. We'll be going to the Cirque after riding. It's a 42 mile ride in the Virginia countryside (including some Virginia hills). The ride start is a couple of miles from the fairgrounds where the Cirque is held. If you would like to join the ride, let me know and I'll send directions to the ride start (Loudoun County High School).Riv content: some of the Sunday morning riders own Rivs, though I can't promise they'll be riding them that day - but there will be classic steel bikes and gear on the rideJoanJun 3, 2009 04:36:08 PM, rbw-owners-bunch@googlegroups.com wrote:Two or three of us are coming from the Richmond, Virginia area. [RBW] Re: Trailers
I have a Burley Nomad, the cargo trailer with a cover and I have a Bleriot that I use to pull it. I use it for groceries and other cargo (kitty litter and catfood). I really like how easy it is to hitch (mine is a 2008 version). The hitch fits in the quick release lever and takes about a minute to install. No part of the trailer arm or hitch touches any part of the bike. I find it easy to use and smooth riding. I only notice it being there when it's heavily loaded and I'm starting up hill. The cover comes off easily or part way if some item is too tall for it. Pictures here (sorry there's no shot of the hitch side). http://tinyurl.com/bmx55d Joan Oppel On Mon, Jan 26, 2009 at 5:38 PM, avillage wrote: > Hi, all. My first post here. [RBW] 'Country' Rivs ride rainy roads today
Today two Bleriots bounced around the unpaved roads near Middleburg, Virginia for about 38 miles. Precipitation prediction was 90%, it had rained most of the night and most local club rides were canceled, but one fellow who scheduled a “rustic” ride said he was heading out. So two of us went with our Bleriots. Four other people showed up as well. The ride was about 90% on unpaved roads, and I think the Bleriot is the perfect bike for this kind of riding. The surface ranges from packed dirt, to loose gravel to jarring washboard and randomly scattered pot holes. But the countryside is beautiful and the horses came to greet us whenever we stopped near one of their fences. We saw new calves running in the fields. Even though it was cloudy – and we had light rain for about half the ride, we had lovely vistas and great views of mountain partly shrouded in mist. I wasn’t going to ride but my friend said, let’s go! For me, this kind of riding is possible because of the Bleriot - the way it handles just gives me a lot of confidence (though it is my only Riv). Re: Re: RE: [RBW] Re: All Rounder vs Bleriot -Hetres w/ fenders
I don't pop the fenders off and on. I'm not that likely to fiddle with my bike, they just have become part of the bike. I think if I took them off, I would have to spend a little time re-jiggering the stays to clear the tire. Sometimes I have to take the front wheel off (when I take 2 bikes in my car), and then the fender gets bumped around and bent and I have to readjust the stays, which takes a couple of minutes. But day after day, if the wheel stays on, the fender stays clear. I also ride two different bikes regularly and the other bike doesn't have fender. I guess I should say that if I were more mechanically competent, it probably wouldn't be much of a problem to remove and replace the fenders. But that seems like a lot of extra work - to me! This picture doesn't really give you an idea of the clearance, it's just the most recent close up I have. http://www.flickr.com/photos/30856149@N04/6942397248/in/photostream/On 04/27/12, eastcentral wrote: Joan, do you ever pop out the fenders when you have a string of no-rain days and throw'em on for wet ones? [RBW] Impressed by an AHH (though I don't own one)
I led a group ride this morning for one of the local bike clubs. Richard showed up with his brand new A Homer Hilsen. He's very excited about the bike, has posted here about his excitement (blueride2). It's a pretty standard Riv build. I took my Bleriot to the ride - another standard Riv build. Differences are: Bleriot has Hetres (45 front, 50 rear), AHH has Jack Browns (at 70 front and rear)Bleriot has SKS fenders, AHH is fenderless (though he is waiting for the fenders).Bleriot is a 53, AHH is a 55.Bleriot has a trunk bag and rack(multi-tool, spare, patch kit) and rack, AHH had just a tiny seatbag.Since I can ride a 55, I took Richard's bike for a short spin. Wow, was I impressed. It felt - sprightly, lively. Definitely different than the Bleriot. I'm wondering why. There's maybe a slight difference in weight between the two bikes, by feel. Re: [RBW] Re: Glacier NP
Jim - I toured with a friend around Glacier and Waterton and parts in between in 2010. There was construction on the Going to the Sun road then and we were held up at several places (for quite a while in 2 spots, maybe 15 or more minutes). But so were all the cars. People were friendly and calm as they waited. And the road crews were very accommodating to the two of us on bikes. In each section, as we got moving after waiting for the go signal, we politely reminded the person managing the flow that we would be much slower than cars. And they held traffic longer on the other end because of us.Bottom-line: still a gorgeous ride, well worth it (I'd never been there, or to any of the other places we visited), and fun.Joan -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. Re: [RBW] Winter Delaware Water Gap-where's the AT in MD
The AT crosses Rt 40 near Myersville, MD (near where 40 goes over/under I70). There's a parking lot at the top there, access to the AT for hiking only. Also, there are bike routes, paved routes, leaving from that parking lot. Prepare for climbing. No piece of cake. Nothing like the groomed trail I rode back on Day 2 (the McDade Recreational Trail). If you saw the PDF map of the park, the AT skirts down the eastern side and generally snakes down (up) linked state & nat'l forests or parks along the spine of the Appalachian Mountains form Maine to Georgia.Down in southwestern Va., we have the little town of Damascus, where the Appalachian Trail and the TransAm Bike Route 76 intersect.Paul GermainMidlothian, Va.MichaelNov 24 03:09PM -0800 > Thanks Paul! Re: Re: [RBW] Re: Albas & Thumbies setup
I just HAVE to chime in: I have a reverse pull Shimano derailleur on my Bleriot BUT a standard pull Shimano derailleur on my Bike Friday. I switch between them by (literally) talking to myself about the change when I get on the bike. And I don't make wrong shifts on either bike. On the other hand, when I ride the Bleriot for a few rides and then switch to my bike with brifters, I do reach for the bar end shifters instead of the brifters, even with my hands on the hoods. So - TAKE THAT :)Joan(This has been explained to SP previously) On 01/02/14, Bill Lindsay wrote: "You are doomed. :-) "It was you who guaranteed I was doomed the last time I talked up my reverse pull Shimano derailers. I used to be a big fan of the reverse pull SunTour front derailleurs, used them for 20 years on all my bikes. Then, 23 years ago I switched. Every so often even now I still go the wrong way and end up going to the granny when I meant to go to the big ring. And you're destined for that same sort of error, and for the same reason: just as the SunTour backwards fronts went out of production and eventually failed in service, Shimano has, I understand, discontinued their ass-backwards MTB rear derailleurs. So down the road, when those reflexes have been thoroughly implanted, you inevitably will be forced to change back again. You are doomed. :-)Imagine how it used to be before the location of the brake and gas pedals became standardized... [RBW] Tire boots, 650B wheels, spokes
Starting a bit of a new thread: my Bleriot has 650B wheels, and when I've taken it on a tour, I've carried a spare tire (see Sheldon's site for how to fold any tire) and just considered it part of the tour gear. I've also carried a couple of spokes specifically sized for the wheels (front & rear). That's for touring, where my calculation is the extra weight of the tire (& spokes, to be completely specific) is worth the peace of mind if I needed it. Yes, you can get anything over night delivered but that could eat up at least one and possibly two days of a tour (Side comment: I've never experienced a cut sidewall in over 6,000 miles on Hetres on awful urban roads, gravel/washboard/rocky roads and unpaved rail trails.)As for tire boots, I cut up an old tire and have a couple of boots in different sizes in my pack with the patch kit. I also have duct tape with me and have used it for various repairs (a small piece of cardboard with a few feet of duct tape wrapped around it - very compact), including wrapping a broken spoke around another spoke for a friend, bandaging a cut (sweaty person, bandaid wouldn't stick), holding a rack together, emergency glasses repair, etc etc -- etc! I do have the FiberFix spoke, have not used it myself, but have watched someone do it. The FiberFix, tire boots, duct tape are in the baggie that serves as my repair kit, along with a couple of plastic tire irons and a spare tube. I've used 26 tubes in my 650B tires several times.Joan -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. Re: Re: [RBW] Re: My Bike Life Is Lacking
Leah - I really sympathize with the total change your move has made in your biking locale and routine. I almost hesitate to write the following - because it's sort of against the use the bike for as much as possible philosophy. I also should point out that I'm lucky to live in a place where I can do almost any thing by bike from my house. Ok, all that said, here's what I suggest: put the bike on your car and drive to some place to ride. Heresy, I know. But at least you would be getting out to ride! Can you park your car somewhere that would allow you to do errands, grocery shopping, etc by bike and return to the car? Using the car for only part of the trip is still good, in my opinion. I know people who, for whatever reason, just live to far from work to bike the whole way so they drive part of the way, park and then ride. The Harpeth bike club is in Franklin county - harpethbikeclub.com. Most bike clubs have cue sheets or routes that they are willing to share. You might check out the contact link under the resources tab on the club's website and get in touch with someone about ride routes. Re: [RBW] Best Rainy footwear/boots
I was on a week-long bike tour with friends a couple of years ago, and it was raining as we prepared to leave in the morning. One of my friends reached into his bag and brought out a roll of saran wrap! I wrapped my shoes and ankles/socks, crisscrossed to leave the bottom of forefoot clear - and my feet stayed dry all day. I couldn't believe he actually carried that roll, but was glad he did. It definitely looks dorky - but is effective. Wrapping the ankle/sock connection was important as it kept water from dripping into the shoe. You could have a box at home and wrap some around cardboard to keep at work. And for an occasional commute, might work just fine and not much of an investment. Joanwho has been caught in the rain on commutes (including thunderstorms), and just got wet shoes and socks. But I always kept shoes at work under my desk to change into anyway. Stuffed newspaper into my biking shoes, changed it frequently to stuff more dry paper in. The shoes dried out - either to go home from work if wet in the morning or by the morning if I got soaked in the evening. These are the Cayuse Pass 26mm tires - I know, not nice and wide like our Rivendells will accept, but that's the size that fit on my non-Riv bike and so I bought them back in April. I didn't know what to expect for longevity, and actually had some misgivings about the whole supple casing, extra light, not very thick tread. I'm used to getting 4,000 miles out of tires, mostly Vittoria Rubinos in the past few years. And I've always chosen tires with advertised built-in "flat protection" of some kind. So, ok, I put these tires on my bike on April 8, then went to Tennessee and rode 400 miles on some chewed up, barely paved rural roads (as well as decent paved ones). I've ridden about 10 miles on gravel, couple of miles at a time (because it was 'there') and the tires handled it well. I've ridden hundreds - really, thousands of miles on the pot-holed, chip-sealed roads of rural Virginia and Maryland and another 300+ miles in Maine. The tires now have 3,281 miles on them. I examined them carefully a few days ago (with an expert witness) - and the rear is showing some wear in the center with the cross-hatching now worn off, but the front still has visible cross-hatching on the center. Now, since I admit to being a little superstitious, I want to say the following carefully, kind of roundabout, you have to read between the lines - I've never taken the tires off the rim since installing them!! I've helped several riding companions with flats though while riding my Compass tires. I mean - we're talking 3,281 miles! The tires are really comfortable, seem fast (how to tell? I'M not fast in general...) as in rolling up to speed faster than the Rubinos, corner, descend very confidently. I have about 67 psi front, 72 rear. If you have a bike that needs narrower tires, I highly recommend these. Riv-content: the bike itself is very Rived-out: Riv handlebar tube, Sugino crank, canvas tube seat bag, Deore rear der. like on the Bleriot, same cassette & chain as on the Bleriot. My non-expert two cents,Joan -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] Review - Compass 700c tires-26
I took a leap and purchased a set of Cayuse Pass, 700c x 26 tires from Compass, in early April. They've been ridden about 420 miles - and I really like them a lot. Definitely a cushy, pleasant ride. Without question the following is a subjective judgment: I think they are faster than my previous tires, Vittoria Rubino Pro. The Cayuse Pass mount easily on Mavic Open Pro rims, less easily on DT Swiss rims. They show no wear at all after the 420 miles (I just had them off and checked them over today). And they've been used on some of the worst roads I've seen in a long time, after our horrible winter here in the Maryland, Virginia, DC area. Yesterday, during a rural ride, the roads seemed to be one pothole or rut or plow-scraped surface after another. One 3 mile stretch was barely what could be called paved, just one little hole after another. I also rode them in rural Tennessee for a week, on little one lane roads last paved a long time ago. All that is to say, I've used them on a mix of surfaces, even some short sections of gravel.I think they are great tires, so I wanted to pass along the early review. Longevity, I guess, remains to be seen. Oh, I should mention: zero flats.Joan -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] Kudos for New Riv wool bike jersey -
I had to share my thoughts on this since I like it so much. I saw Grant's post about getting these in and that they'd be the last from this New Zealand supplier. So here's the report: this is a great wool jersey/shirt. Lightweight (I'd guess something like 18 grams based on what I know about my other wool tops) and very well made, beautifully made. It's $60 - half what same-quality tops cost from other companies. And, it has 3 pockets in the back. They're unobtrusive, so if you don't want to use them, I don't think you'll notice they're there. I personally like having them. I got another bottle of Kookaburra wash along with the shirt - that stuff is the best wool wash I've ever used. Re: Re: [RBW] Re: Can I rant just a minute?
Recent interaction to add to the rant: I joined a local club group for a 'Christmas lights' ride a couple of weeks ago on a Sunday evening. The route involved part of hilly Arlington County (but not the truly devilish hilly sections of the county). A friend of mine invited me, he wanted me to meet 'Bunny', a woman he described as "70 and doing adventurous rides with her group of friends". So Bunny and I met, and being close to the same age, we bonded quickly. But I was on the Bleriot and she was on a Specialized carbon fiber, compact double bike - and struggling on the hills. She asked me why I could so easily go up the hills (well, I do ride a LOT and usually on hilly terrain). I said, well, you might do better with more gears. She replied, I know, I shouldn't have listened to the guy in the bike shop who sold me this bike and told me it had all the gears I would ever need. THAT KIND OF ATTITUDE AT BIKE SHOPS MAKES ME CRAZY! Ok, that's the end of my rant, and by the way, I said nothing further to her about bikes. We just chatted about other stuff for the rest of the ride. Plus, she didn't show up for the next Christmas lights ride the following week, which did include some of the steeper Arlington hills. Sad. I've learned to try and keep my gear/weight thoughts to myself (try, operative word).JoanPS - I invited Bunny to join me on a ride I'm leading in a moderately hilly location for another local club mid-January and promised that she wouldn't be dropped. So maybe I can help her along in her biking career. On 12/29/11, Ray Shine wrote: Like most on this forum, I agree with all the comments, and applaud Anne for spot-on comments. Re: Re: Re: [RBW] Re: Can I rant just a minute?
Yes, Anne - it is ridiculous that this 70 year old does not have a triple. And I had to bite my tongue NOT to tell her to go get her bike outfitted with a triple. It wasn't really the time/place for that - in the dark, looking at Christmas decorations, holiday spirit among the group. That's one reason why I invited her to come ride with me on another occasion. I will talk to her about retrofitting it when I next see her. The countryside here has a lot of beautiful scenic places to ride, but the prettiest areas have hills. However, retrofitting her existing bike will not be cheap - it is usually possible to install a triple but it takes some work and could cost her (just an educated guess, folks) around $300, maybe more. Given that the retrofit would allow her to bike more, more easily and see more of those scenic places, maybe she'll be willing to spend the money. My other bike (other than the Bleriot with standard Riv build) is an 8 year old Waterford. However, I spec'd every bit of it, so it has a triple, low gears, comfort geometry, and room for 30-32mm tires. Every couple of months, some guy on a club ride comments on my cassette (11-34), "wow, that's quite a low gear you've got there". I say, "you bet it is". I may only use that gear once every 3 months, but when I want it, there it is. My low gear was especially helpful in Southwest Virginia this past June on a Bike Virginia tour, where most people walked many of the hills. Or, as Anne describes, were weaving back and forth in that dangerous way - because with hills that steep, you couldn't see oncoming cars. (I actually didn't know about Rivendell when I bought the Waterford, and I didn't spec the geometry but did describe the comfort I wanted.)Joan On 12/29/11, Anne Paulson wrote: On Thu, Dec 29, 2011 at 9:50 AM, Joan Oppel <oppel...@verizon.net> wrote:> Recent interaction to add to the rant: I joined a local club group for a> 'Christmas lights' ride a couple of weeks ago on a Sunday evening. The best guess for a crank for a 70-year-old womanriding in an area with hills is a triple, with very low gears. Isn'tit usually possible to install a triple on these bikes with stupidcompact doubles? I would have suggested that the woman get her bikechanged over. If one is in one's 70s, one shouldn't be missing out ongood riding-- when we start getting on in years, we need to takeadvantage of all the riding we can squeeze in.One of the people I was ranting about is the 98-pound woman, who is inher 60s and a strong climber. She has a compact double on her bike, and she assured me that a triple would be too heavy. And yet-- I wasstronger up some of the *very steep!!!* hills, she was stronger on onelong *steep* hill, though she ended up zigzagging. But then, at theend, there was one more steep hill. And, having not had to kill myselfin a too-high gear on all the other hills, I rode up it and sheskipped it. People should ride the bikes they want, but it seems to methat some of these riders have chosen bikes that are keeping them fromdoing riding that they would enjoy on a different bike. And the other thing about these light bikes that annoys me is, OK, youwill ride faster up hills on a lighter bike, all other things beingequal. That is perfectly true, and in my club we do a lot of hills.But... this is only a positional good. That is, if everybody buys alighter bike, then everybody will be just that little bit faster, butnobody is any better off. That is, Ted can still beat Susan, and Susancan still beat Alan, but the order of arrival at the top of the hillwill be exactly the same as if they all rode Rivendells. It's apointless arms race. And my club is big, so we have lots of rides forpeople of all abilities, so riders can always find people of about thesame speed anyway. A Riv, on the other hand, has intrinsic value that doesn't depend onwhat other people are riding. No matter what my riding friends areriding, my Roadeo will still be beautiful. It

I rode the GAP & C&O a couple of years ago - Pittsburgh to DC to home, a friend and I (me: Bleriot, her: Atlantis). Lots of fun.We rode from Ohiopyle to Falling Water because I'd never seen the house. It was not a difficult climb, long not steep, and with some breaks and definitely worth it. Reservations are needed for the Falling Water tour, and there are specific times. We were there on a weekday in October and had no trouble getting a reservation the same day. But on a weekend, it might be more difficult. Just some details to keep in mind as you plan.Train: we used a shuttle service, much more economical than the train - at least for traveling between DC and Pittsburgh. The way the Amtrak schedule worked would have required a night in a hotel, so the shuttle was cheaper (though it would have been neat to take Amtrak). [RBW] Hillborne sighting in Clarendon (No. VA.)- whose?
Uncommon sighting - I don't know why but there aren't that many of us riding around Northern Virginia on Rivendells, though more than I thought showed up a few weeks ago in response to the 'survey' question. This was an orange Hillborne parked outside the new Trader Joe's, using 2 (!) ulocks to hold it to the bike rack. Albatross with cork handles, 700c wheels, mini front rack with basket, Nitto rear rack, Brooks. I too (frequently) use 2 locks on the Bleriot, ulock and cable. It was very windy today - 35 mph gusts, so I had a sllloooww shopping trip.Joan -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. Re: [RBW] Re: Rando Advice
Pam - I don't have a mixte, but I do have a Bike Friday. I've ridden it on several long rides - a 2-day ride last August that covered 108 miles the first day, 84 the second day. It's also been on at least 2 rides of over 70 miles. It's a fine and comfortable bike for me and I took care in setting it up to be that way. I have a rear rack so it can carry a trunk bag and I use a smaller handlebar bag. I know at least a couple of people who have done long randonneur rides on Bike Fridays (200k, and longer). I think it all depends on how comfortable on the BF, whether it's geared for the terrain of the populaire. As for the mixte, I think it would be good to try it out on a 45-50 mile ride and see how you feel at that distance. That will give you some data about how it would work for you on the longer populaire. [RBW] Delaware Water Gap Adventure photos etc
Here's a link so you can get a taste of what it was like: http://www.flickr.com/photos/30856149@N04/sets/72157633254777022/We met on a chilly morning (low 40's at the start), 11 riders, 9 Rivs: Bleriot,AtlantisA Homer Hilsens - 2Sam HillborneAll-RounderBombadils - 3Kelly BedfordKogswellWe rode about 45 miles each day, and it was about as scenic as you could ask for on a ride. Streams, forest, mountains, some dirt and gravel, waterfalls, low traffic, old country towns with historic (or historic-looking) buildings. And lots of climbing! And wonderful companions. We left the parking lot in Columbia NJ, and after a few miles into the Worthington State Forest for a few miles and then into the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area. We rode for miles along the Delaware River on the Old MIne Road, said to be the oldest paved road in the U.S. Then for more adventure, we turned onto dirt/gravel Mountain Rd up to Buttermilk Falls. We continued from there with Pocono Mountains to our west and eventually came out on pavement and then into Milford, PA. Neat old houses, hotels - and after allotting 30 minutes to clean up (because cleaning up was not a priority), we regrouped to ride to beer at the Dimmick Inn (where we also ate dinner). Great breakfast at the Milford Diner (where we all bought carryout lunch sandwiches) and then off for the next phase of the adventure: riding in the Stokes Forest. Beautiful scenic woods, streams -- and much climbing. Bobby said that we should ignore the one-way road signs, there wouldn't be much traffic. Reward: gorgeous view from top of Sunrise Mountain. On to lunch at Swartswood State Park. Then onto a dead end road to lead to the Paulinskill Trail - Bobby said we should ignore the "road closed" sign - it "didn't apply to us". We eventually got to the Paulinskill Trail - the only dirt section for today. We rode along the Paulinskill River for miles - again very scenic. This was a terrific ride, Bobby did a super job of organizing. Enjoy, Joan -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. Re: [RBW] Handlebar Bag Recommendations?
I have the Brand V bar bag. On Noodles. But it is beautifully made, easily accessible while riding and holds a lot of stuff. Camera (older Canon point&shoot so slightly bulky), snacks, cellphone, rolled up light jacket, tube. It has a double ended zipper, that's easy to grasp. The two brass rings on each end can be used for extra stability if one wants (not needed but personal preference). If on tour, I attach a short velcro strap to each brass ring and then stretch that to my brake lever/handlebar. I'm impressed with this bag, and 3 friends have purchased their own in the few months after seeing mine. This might be the best current picture of it though not great, if you look closely at the brake lever, you can barely see the small velcro strap, it sits flat and I never know it's there: http://www.flickr.com/photos/30856149@N04/8652002735/in/photostream/ Joan On 04/20/13, Deacon Patrick wrote: I'm currently using an xs saddlebag as my handlebar bag, but would love something a wee bit bigger with an easy access map pocket (I have the map case Riv. sells, so that's covered). Answering both questions below: how to get in on "next event"? The invitation was posted to this list so one just says yes and waits for details. Next east event is not yet planned, though. "Cool weather gear" - our Delaware Water Gap ride was April 13-14, less than 10 days ago. This being mid-Atlantic U.S., we get amazingly variable weather every spring. Temps were in the 70's the week prior to the ride, but on both mornings of our ride, we started in the cloudy (clouds do make a difference in how it feels) mid-40's, rising to afternoon, very comfortable mid-60's. [RBW] Seeking advice for Oregon bike trip
Oregonian Riv listers - I'm deep into planning a bike trip for late August (more or less 23rd to 31st) and want to ride in the Cascades area. I'd love to get feedback from folks on my proposed route, and any information on a couple of questions. I'm going with a friend, we are NOT campers, so motel/cabins/whatever for lodging (not picky). We're distance bikers used to climbing (in the East), who love to stop and take in scenery, take pictures, picnic, etc. We don't mind long days, and are more interested in the day's journey than the end location. I've identified places to stay for each overnight, and we'll carry enough water and food for each day (if no services available). Oh, because of my friend's work schedule and family stuff, we've really only got 7 days for biking, though might be able to squeeze one more in if we can get exactly right flight timing. Here's our proposal (mileages are somewhat approximate though I've checked online mapping programs in detail so I think estimates are close):Rainbow to Oakridge (Auferheide Hwy) - 64 milesOakridge to Diamond Lake (I know it's part highway) - 86Diamond Lake to Crater Lake Mazama or Lodge - 42-50Crater Lake to Crescent Lake - 70Crescent Lake to Bend (Cascades Scenic Hwy) - 75Bend to Sisters - 30 Sisters to Rainbow - 45Questions - Does anyone have information about Windigo Pass Road between Crescent Lake and Diamond Lake? Web research leads to a report of a touring cyclist who turned back because he thought it wasn't doable. But I'm wondering. Have also read 3 trip descriptions of cyclists who did the Hwy 97 & Hwy 138 sections and found them doable, if not as fun as the more rural roads for other sections of this same tour.Is doing Cascades Scenic Hwy in one day shortchanging the route, that is, not leaving enough time to enjoy the scenery. Re: Re: [RBW] Seeking advice for Oregon bike trip
Great info on Windigo. So we'll skip it. "How are you planning to get from Crater Lake to Crescent Lake? Backtracking past the lake, or going around via Klamath Falls?" -- we are planning to backtrack around past the lake, I assume you mean Crater Lake. The idea is to ride the east rim, then go to Mazama or the Lodge. Then ride the west rim, connecting to the road backtracking to Rt 138. Many thanks,Joan On 05/15/13, Anne Paulson wrote: I rode the Sierra Cascades last summer. Our group did not do Windigo Pass; however, we did hear about it from southbound cyclists. And I also have a friend who did it. We went through in early July, when the mosquitos were just hatching, and heard that at that time the mosquitos in the Windigo Pass area were horrible and the surface was difficult. We went north over Crater Lake, and turned right at 138. That area seemed like practically a desert, but when I stopped at that corner to put on sunblock I was mobbed by mosquitoes.A friend who was going south on the Sierra Cascades in late August 2010, and who, like me, generally loves to take unpaved roads, did Windigo Pass and didn't like it. He said the surface was loose and difficult. This friend and I rode cross-country in 2006, delighting in taking gravel roads instead of paved roads when we could; he is not one of those frail flowers who can't have their tires touch a piece of gravel. How are you planning to get from Crater Lake to Crescent Lake? Backtracking past the lake, or going around via Klamath Falls? I don't recommend the latter. The road from Crater Lakes to Klamath Falls is fine, but the part of 97 that we rode, from Highway 138 to Highway 58, was nothing much. It wasn't awful, and it was perfectly safe, but it was rather dreary, hot and bare. Re: [RBW] Riding near Annapolis?
Tim - are you interested in driving a bit to do some riding? If so, about 20 minutes south of Annapolis is a community called "Harwood", where there is parking at Southern High School. If you're interested, I can send you some cue sheets for ride routes that leave from there. Very scenic, but not flat. The Baltimore/Annapolis trail is flat but that's it for flat riding except for downtown D.C. If you want to drive to DC to ride flat areas, you could google the Mt. Vernon Trail for directions and info (mostly flat except for a couple of small climbs), goes about 20 miles east/south of DC, following the Potomac River to - Mt. Vernon (all bike trail, busy on weekends). At about mile 5 or 6, you arrive at Old Town Alexandria, a pleasant place for a snack or meal. And riding around Old Town (little hills go up from the river), there are some interesting old houses around, a historic church, parks along the water, neat place. Heading in the opposite direction from Mt Vernon, going west, across from Georgetown, you can pick up the Custis Trail, leading to the W&OD (rail trail) Trail (google for directions and info). It's about 4 miles from Georgetown to the W&OD intersection, then about 42 miles to the terminus of the W&OD. Not flat, though there are flat sections. The W&OD goes through suburbia, and then out into the country. It's a wonderful rail trail. Busy on weekends. Most of the suburban areas and countryside surrounding Annapolis and DC (and within DC itself, you climb to leave the Mall and monuments area) are not particularly flat. Anyway, let me know if you want route info from Harwood - that's the place nearest Annapolis with nice riding.Joan On 05/24/13, Tim Whalen wrote: Hi all,I am spending some time in Annapolis MD next month and would greatly appreciate any tips about good rides or other biking info for the area. Also, I am thinking about bringing my Quickbeam as I am imagining it to be pretty flat like riding D.C. is. Its just a matter of time 'til all the forks around here start snapping, and nobody wants that. From reports I have read, Howard County, Maryland is one of, and within an hour of, three of the top 5 richest counties in the USA. So folks can afford Rivs out here. And the housing is much cheaper here than SF area (gas too I think). So I bet there is more disposable income to throw around. You got 3 college urban areas within 30 minutes of each other (DC, College Park, and Baltimore). Bring on the Quickbeam Reissues. The area has lotsa bike clubs and fundraiser rides. Bike lanes are popping up all over and there are MUPS and trails galore. You can pretty much get anywhere in Columbia, MD on their elaborate MUP-ways. Some shoppes around here carry the odd Surly and Salsa, but 99% of the time I see shoppes swollen with alucarbon racers and comfort bikes. If you want a new touring bike, the only shoppes within 30 minutes give you the choice of the LHT or the Trek touring bike they have out. That's it. Nary a Mixte either. Maybe one? I don't know business, so maybe I am talking outta my hat, but fancy steel for the non racer would fill the gaping maw of the offerings available around here for the cyclist. And would help people have bikes that could have fenders that didn't need to be in 3 pieces to fit. Re: [RBW]and Adventure Cycling question
I've been on one Adventure Cycling tour and know a number of people who have been on one of their tours. First though, I'd point out that they have several different types of tours - minimal support, where there are 10-12 people, route info provided, everyone carries his/her own stuff plus some shared gear, camp every night, buy food and share cooking duties, but a guide goes along. There are a couple of other levels too, so check out the notes about each tour that appeals to you. Prices vary of course. The one I went on was "fully supported" - about 50-60 people, support truck carried gear, caterer and catering truck were with the trip the whole way and provided breakfast and dinner. We camped in commercial camp grounds with showers. Route sheets for every day plus a support vehicle on the route with water and some snacks. It was a well run trip, great group of staff and riders. Everyone I know who has done one or another type of Adventure Cycling tour has had positive things to say.Note that I've done multi-day trips that include everything from self-supported touring with one to 4 friends, big cross-state group rides with 1,000 - 2,000 riders (Bike Virginia, Cycle North Carolina), smaller group rides with 100-150 with minimal support, etc. It seems to me that Adventure Cycling pricing for their trips is in line with other groups that offer similar kinds of camping, services, food support.
