Here's my East Coast perspective on the Chilly Hilly - i"m visiting family in Seattle (I live near DC). I rode Chilly Hilly with my son-in-law, but didn't mention to the list because I knew we were going to take a later ferry. We rode to the ferry from West Seattle and after getting caught because the lower bridge was opened, we took the 9:35 ferry. First half of the ride was cloudy, a occasional spitting rain - but it snowed a bit, hailed a bit and then rained the entire last 15 miles, plus wind and rain blasted us on the ride back to West Seattle.
You would not have recognized me -- as I was riding a mint green Trek Pure step-through townie bike! Nothing "Riv" about me yesterday except my wool jersey - safely secured under my pink jacket. It's my daughter's bike and luckily it has low gears. My son-in-law was on an MB-2 with a Carradice bag in back and banana bag in front. (If anyone happened to see either of us.) A number of riders commented on my bike.......it certainly was distinctive among the bikes I saw on Bainbridge. Here's my perspective: 1) If this ride had been in the DC area, there wouldn't have been over 3,000 riders (the count I heard, and yes, I know there are usually 5,000). In DC there would have been 300, weather-wimps that we are. 2) I saw many many more steel bikes yesterday than I see in the DC area, I mean, more in one day yesterday than I see in a month or two! I saw an Atlantis and a Hillborne and spoke to both but they just said hello and went on by. Doing CH gave me a good idea of what it's like to bike here year round. Saw Rob with the Rambouillet at the line to catch the ferry back to Seattle, but otherwise, it seems like the nasty weather kept those with more sense than me back at home!
