[RBW] Re: Commuting makes me angry...(might be a little ranty!)

2010-04-14 Thread Angus
I feel fortunate that I have shoulders or lightly drive streets for
most of my 7.5 mile commute to work.

My work is on a heavily traveled multi-lane road with no shoulder, so
I ride in the grass along the side the road. It's quite bumpy and
such, but a bit of off road riding on the commute is not such a bad
thing.

Fortunately I haven't had too many problems with cars and I've tried
to adopt the Buddhist philosophy that they are providing me with an
opportunity to practice my patience. Based on past results...I need
more practice :-)

The light goes very well with the town bike; quite stylish.

It is good to be able to reuse something from the past from time to

[RBW] Re: Silver Hupe love

2010-04-14 Thread Angus
With the Silver Hupe, for me the seat stay diameter made a difference.

On the Quickbeam, with single tapered seat-stays it gouged the paint a
bit and didn't want to fit around the larger diameter seat stays.
On the Rambouillet with double tapered seat-stays, noticeable smaller
diameter, it fit just fine.

Hard to tell, but it looks like a campagnolo mirage rear derailer.
Campagnolo does sell the parts individually, but as it is a discontinued
product line,
they are fairly cheap to replace.

Should be about 30 bucks new on ebay.

[RBW] Re: Commuting makes me angry...(might be a little ranty!)

2010-04-14 Thread Matt Critchlow
Sorry to hear about this Joe. That ride through Leucadia is always
sketchy in my opinion without a legit bike lane. Whenever I'm riding
south through Leucadia I head up to Neptune and go back to PCH in
Encinitas. It's slower, but I've personally had some close calls/angry
drivers along the Leucadia stretch too. Guess they're not all trying
to "Keep Leucadia Funky".

Hope today was a better ride!

[RBW] WTB: 61cm or 62cm 650B Riv

2010-04-14 Thread Rob Harrison

Greetings esteemed list members,

I am a newcomer on this list. I am currently a Rivendell enthusiast
rather than Rivendell owner. I'd like to change that. :)

Here's what I'm (ideally) looking for:

• 650B, with room for Hetres.
• 61cm or 62cm frame size.
• Ideally, I'd like to buy a built up bike, but I'd also consider a
frame/fork.
• Pretty flexible on build, but a 46cm Nitto Noodle bar and a small
front rack would be nice.

I think this basically means a 61cm Bleriot, or (possibly) a 60cm or
(probably) a 62cm Saluki, or a custom 650B. PBH is 88.3cm. So
standover ought to be no more than ~85.75 cm. My saddle height is
~78cm. Center of saddle to center of stem is currently 70cm.

My total dream bike is Estaban's ProtoVelo. I LOVE that bike! I'm
trying to talk him into selling it to me

My intention is to keep my bought-new-in-1992 59cm Bridgestone RB-T
for commuting, and use this new bike for fast and fun recreational
rides--starting with the STP this year. And next year, maybe my first
brevet...? The RB-T is too small for me, but works just fine for my
daily 8-mile RT commute. It's now set up with Albatross bars, a
Technomic stem and a 300mm seatpost, lots of lights and a Burley rear
rack for our Piccolo Trail-a-Bike. I just weighed it at Elliot Bay
Bicycles a while back and without the U-lock it was 32 lbs of utter
utility. So yah, something a bit sportier would be good. :) I also
like the idea of the S24O, and there are many opportunities for that
in the Seattle area. I'm 55, and, um, working on flexibility. I weigh
about 205 lbs right now, and according to the handy-dandy tire
pressure spreadsheet I need at least Gran Bois Cypres-like tire width,
and wider would be better. I'm not a parts snob, but I do believe I'm
too poor to buy cheap things. My RB-T has done me pretty well for 18
years, and I hope this bike will keep me happy for a couple decades as
well. So bring on the Phil Rivvy hubs, but I'm ok with Deore, if
that's what ya got. I'm intrigued by Campy brifters, but I've never
ridden with them. Seven speeds seems to work pretty well, but heck,
eight or nine might be even better. So far I definitely need a triple,
but if my bike was 10 lbs lighter and I wasn't carrying my laptop and
lunch, a compact double with a wide-range cassette might work.

Totally open to other suggestions, if you've got 'em. I'd consider,
for example, a nice yellow RB-1 or similar, vintage-ish, lugged steel
bike, if I can't yet find my Rivendell

Apologies for the long post. Thank you!

Rob in Seattle

P. S. If you'd like to read some of my early musings on this subject,
have a look here: .

[RBW] Re: Commuting makes me angry...(might be a little ranty!)

2010-04-14 Thread Rick
My office is moving, and I am anticipating a different commute with
longer exposure to dense traffic, as well as the bummer consideration
of parking my Bleriot in a deck and not next to my desk.

I endorse the non-violent approach personally, but some DC bike
messenger associates I knew back in the early '90s carried pockets
full of washers to toss at less-considerate motorists. Lots of one-
way street options in the urban environs made them impossible to catch
after the fact.

Fear not. The second wheel I ever built (i.e. not built by an expert)
was a 28 hole open pro to some "specialized" branded $7 (i kid you
not) nashbar special front hub, and it's seen now 4 years of hard use
on the 3 front of three different fixed gears under a ~200 lb (+ or -)
rider (so, not being ridden "lightly") on urban, road, and mixed-
terrain rides with nary a truing needed, much less signs of impending

Grant's knothole today refers to their frame repair projects. Looks
pretty cool. There's a 66cm Rambu pictured.

I had the goofy idea of getting a couple suitable headtube lugs for $5

[RBW] Newbie Seeks Advice on Ca Pacific Coast riding/tech advice

Just received Adventure Cycling maps for riding the Ca. Coast. I can't
imagine being able to read them as I ride because they are so small, and
details are written more than shown.
The Rivendell guys suggested I post here to ask:
1) what MAPS do riders like>
2) I live in Oakland...what route do you like best for getting from here to
the Pacific to head shout. Would be nice not to take the most strenuous
route to begin.
3) I am pondering iPhone or Droid or Nexus One as an all-around stay in
touch, see maps, email Warm Showers folkscomments? I am less attracted
to iPhone because of ATT; and actually, I would love to avoid any contract
with any provider, but it seems I cannot buy a contract-free Droid yet.

I have used the Adventure Cycling maps for the California coast.
They're great, and I highly recommend them. In the case where the
Adventure Cycling maps are different from the route in the Kirkendall
book, the Adventure Cycling maps have a better route.

Keep in mind, the California coast route is not complicated. Mostly,
it's Highway 1. Not that many turns.

BART. Not strenuous at all.

But getting to, say, Santa Cruz is going to require some climbing.
Either you go over Devil's Slide, or you ride down the Peninsula and
over the coast range. Either way, you'll have to go up. Santa Cruz to
Monterey is pretty easy, but then you start climbing again.

[RBW] Re: Newbie Seeks Advice on Ca Pacific Coast riding/tech advice

2010-04-14 Thread Jeremy Till
I'd say the best route to get to the coast is BART to SF and then take
the "wiggle" bike route (you can probably google it) from market
street up to golden gate park, and ride out to the ocean through the
park. Like anne says, you'll have to climb, first to get up and over
daly city and then the devil's slide climb, but both of these are
significantly less climbing than trying to cross the coast range
anywhere on the peninsula.

[RBW] Re: Commuting makes me angry...(might be a little ranty!)

2010-04-14 Thread Will
A lady once ran me and my 25-lb bike off the road with her 3000-lb
Ford wagon -- and I was thankful for years of motorcycle safety
training which teaches one to look where he wants to go, not at what
he is trying to avoid (I stayed upright). Trying to give her the
benefit of the doubt (maybe she simply didn't see me?) I caught her at
the next light and asked as politely and humbly as possible, "excuse
me ma'am, did you see that you came pretty close to a cyclist back
there?" She replied, "yes, and if I had a f-g gun I would shoot
you." With that quote and her license plate number, the local police
were more than happy to get involved; she spent 6 weeks in anger-
management classes. Cyclist +1; driver 0. But generally, I endorse
the zero-response policy. Just ignore them.

Apologies taking this thread further off topic.

[RBW] A mustache moment

2010-04-14 Thread Bruce
We had a great after work ride yesterday. 8 of us tore around through some
local hills for 23 miles. One fellow was on the yellow/black Lance replica
TREK, another on his Scott Tri bike, and so forth. I took my Rivendell-ish old
'79 Nashbar (I suspect made by Mariushi, but can't be sure) lugged steel crit
race bike that came from another list member converted to 650B with mustache
bars. Not being concerned with speed, there is a frame pump mounted on a seat
stay and an OYB gunny sack slung under the seat. I am always the slow one. (On
Saturday's 66 mile Peddalin' For A Cure ride I learned I was both the first
rider registered and the dead last rider to finish riding. Talk about
symmetry!) Anyway, I advertised the ride as 13 -15 mph avg, and was left behind
at 18 mph as they accelerated away from me at 22.

But not so much on the climbs. We regrouped at the store stop mid way, and upon
leaving, they were only out ahead by 1/4 mile or so, and then we took some big
climbs. I passed one, then another, another, and then I was in the middle of a
pack of 4, standing not because I was tired, but because I was passing them.
The Tri guy was still ahead of me as we returned to town and the last long
climb back towards the start point. I got ahead of him in the first 100 yards,
and by the top of the climb 2 miles later, had a good 1/4 - 1/2 mile lead! I
have never ever led on one these outings. To say I am stoked is severe
understatement. Of course, I could go out on the next ride and discover that my
legs are completely lacking in get up and go, but until then I'm savoring the
moment.

The thing I really noticed is that mustache bars are great for hard climbs. The
hand positions are perfect towards the bar ends for standing climbs, and the
forward loops are great for seated climbing. On the downhills, you can get very
aero on them as well. They've taken me some time to get used to, but I really
likes 'em!

[RBW] Re: a different conception of "Fatties Fit Fine"

2010-04-14 Thread Aaron Thomas
Close, indeed, but no cigar. In my opinion, the Carbonomas is more
elegant than the 3T on the Focus. Riv's prototype recalls the Colnago
precisa style fork, which I think is really nice looking, albeit in a
non-traditional way. The 3T is squished looking, like they tried to
make it more "aero" or something. It upsets my aesthetic
sensibilities, but I'm glad to see it out in the peloton. Who knows?
Maybe we'll see the Carbonomas featured in next year's Hell of the
North.

One bit of good news in the meantime is that the Carbonomas quite
easily takes a Challenge Paris-Roubaix 28mm tire (I slipped mine in
the last time I was at RBWHQ to see if it fits). I actually want one
of those forks; I just need to find a frame to buy for it!

[RBW] Orange Bombadil butched up a bit

2010-04-14 Thread William
I took the Bombdil out for a quick loop through Wildcat Canyon. I
live right over the top of the hill from Rifle Range Road, so it's
extraordinarily easy access. I still had the red Hetres on and
Wildcat was still pretty muddy. East Bay Mud tends to stick to
everything so it was a touch sloppy. I went north and popped out
Alvarado Park in Richmond and then back up to my house on the road.
The bike rides fantastic. Very stable and yet does everything I want
it to. The mud made me pull the trigger on some Quasi-Motos for an
option, and I found them for only $49 each, which seemed like a good
deal. I posted a few pictures with the bike butched up a bit with the
knobbies. It ties the black rack in a little better, too.

I liked 'em a lot when i was hauling kids in a trailer too, and i'll
be they'd be great on a cargo bike. They have great leverage. A lot of
people don't like them for longer rides, i'll admit i don't think i've

2010-04-14 Thread William
The Harlequin Pauls? I bought them one at a time, to replace Neo
Retros one at a time on my cyclocross bike. I replaced the rear Neo-
Retro after I gashed my leg doing a dismount. I replaced the front
Neo Retro when I had a persistent brake chatter issue. When I was
ordering the second set, they only had black. Instead of running one
black brake and one silver brake, I thought it would be kind of money
to run them left/right silver black. I even built my wheelset with
silver spokes on the drive side and black on the non drive side. Now
I've gotten attached to running them that way. I wouldn't call it a
trademark, but I've rarely seen it elsewhere.

[RBW] Re: Newbie Seeks Advice on Ca Pacific Coast riding/tech advice

2010-04-14 Thread doug peterson
Bicycling the Pacific Coast, by Vicki Spring & Tom Kirkendall
(Mountaineers Books, Seattle) is the best resource around. ACA's
stuff is good. It's tough to read a map while you ride. Just figure
you're going to stop to consult as needed. Once you hit the coast,
it's pretty well signed with green signs all the way to San Diego.
I'll send you a route slip from the Fisherman's Wharf Hostel that gets
you out of the city.

Most mobile services will work down to Big Sur but then it gets spotty
until SLO. Have no personal knowledge of the devices or services you
reference.

[RBW] Re: Newbie Seeks Advice on Ca Pacific Coast riding/tech advice

2010-04-14 Thread William
The Hostel in Santa Cruz is pretty sweet. It's like an old victorian
house. If you want to do short mileage the first day, Pigeon Point
Hostel is memorable. I like to hostel it the first night just to ease
in to it. Then Pfeiffer Big Sur camping the second night. Big Sur to
San Simeon is a tough day, lots of climbing, but breathtaking.

[RBW] Re: Silver Hupe love

2010-04-14 Thread doug peterson
David's ex-Hupe spent a happy winter on my Atlantis, supporting my
Hobo Bag rigged as a saddlebag. Just tossed it on (well, it's a bit
more than that but not much) & loaded her down. I'll take a look &
see if there is any paint damage I can lay off on the Hupe. My
Atlantis gets pretty well used & abused, so it may be hard to tell.
Works fine for me, though.

Ditto on Doug's recommendation... also the Lonely Planet book "Cycling
USA West Coast" is a good reference book for this route. I normally
copy the pages that cover the section I"m doing so I don't mistakenly
drop the book in some lake or leave it somewhere. I'm envious of your
trip .. I've done the North Coast section but not from SF south...
enjoy!!
