The Hostel in Santa Cruz is pretty sweet. It's like an old victorian house. If you want to do short mileage the first day, Pigeon Point Hostel is memorable. I like to hostel it the first night just to ease in to it. Then Pfeiffer Big Sur camping the second night. Big Sur to San Simeon is a tough day, lots of climbing, but breathtaking.
