RE: Soundforge and reducing hiss, static, etc.

2007-11-17 Thread albert griffith
While it's nice if the person recommending a particular application also
offers a tutorial in its use, it isn't required and shouldn't be. When I
began participating on these lists, much of what I heard made no sense at
all but I assumed if others were doing things, I could too. I read and
asked allot of questions and a year later I found myself posting a reply
which helped a newbie. Wow! What a good feeling. If you think this list
is rough, try a news group. If you have to go until you're better grounded,
good luck.

I'm not talking about anyone being knocked, rather, that what you are
proposing may be out of the leagues of some of us, regarding installing
 plug
ins, to Soundforge and all the ramifications that this feat may
 involve!
 I,
for one, have used Soundforge 6.0, for quite awhile, but, on only a
rudimentary level, wherein I can edit, normalize, resample(if I want to
convert a file, that I have recorded, in mp3, back to wave), etc.,
 etc.,
etc.. In other words, I haven't explored the Noise Reduction realm,
 much
 at
all and wouldn't have a clue, as to getting rid of "machine" noise, as
opposed to hiss and other things! Does that make my point of view a
 little
clearer, Dane? I am not knocking you, either, just trying to prevent
 "Knowledge Frustration"!

Sure! I'm not knocking anyone, the point I was making was that the
Noise Reduction plug-ins marketed alongside Sound Forge are not the be-

Re: Lossless formats

2007-11-17 Thread Kevin Lloyd
Hi Gordon.

You should find no difference whatsoever when ripping to wma lossless as the
nero ripper, and any other ripper for that matter, will be using a microsoft
provided codec.

There is much debate on which program will give a better rip but the truth
is that it really depends more on your CD-ROM drive. If you have a good
drive you'll get consistent rips from any of the programs.

Personally I use media player and get excellent rips. Good enough to play
through an expensive high end hifi system.

Hi
I feel I should know this by now but I don't.
I'm ripping my collection again, this time in wma lossless. I'm baffled by
the bitrates I'm getting - it says 16bit and44.1 but the actual bitrates
fluctuate depending on the song, from in some cases 190 to 780 etc. Is this
truly lossless and can I be sure it's not worse than wav or Apple lossless?

Also can I assume that if I rip using 2 machines then I can add the second
machine's contents to the first's music folder and that Windows Media Player
will add them to the library and treat them as if they'd been ripped on the
first machine?
Thanks for your help.

Oh, it's a way to download music for free, and it's legal. I don't remember
much about what I saw when I went there, except that to keep your files
playing on your mp3 player, you have to sync up with the files you download
from spiralfrog within thirty days, or something like that. I'm guessing
it's some sort of Microsoft site that keeps you on a fairly tight leash in

Hello,
Not necessarily true.
Some USB turntables have high quality audio interface, which means a better
sounding recording from the turntable to your computer witch means better
sound.
The key to the hole thing is shopping around.
The higher quality ones will cost more, but as they say, "you get what you
pay for."

Re: wma lossless

2007-11-17 Thread Kevin Lloyd
Hi Gordon.

16 bit with a frequency of 44 khz is exactly right and you will see
fluctuations in the resulting bitrates. The bitrates generally fluctuate
between 700 and 1000 kbps but it is really dependant on the type of music
you're ripping. Complex music will need more than simple music.

I'm using the same version of the player and my WMA files play fine. Make
sure you've authorized Winamp to play them.

Hi Kevin
Thanks again.
I'm surprised however as I got 190kb in one old song - this is well under
700. Is this ok or should I investigate further?
Thanks.

Re: Soundforge and reducing hiss, static, etc.

2007-11-17 Thread Jerry Richer
The package I sell includes all the built-in Noise Reduction features
of Sound Forge 9 plus Noise Reduction version 2.0.
You wrote: "and does the Noise Reduction plug-in include click and
crackle removal for vinyl?
Or the vinyl plug-ins separate from noise reduction?". I'm not sure I
understand your question but if I do then I will say yes.
I don't know how much the package costs currently. I do have a call in
to my sales representative at Sony. The price on this package has been up
and down as much as fifty dollars in the past couple of years. Tentatively
it looks like the price is more in the $289 area than the $250 area which is
what I sold it for nine months ago. I'll report back when I get a firm
price.

Re: wma lossless

2007-11-17 Thread Kevin Lloyd
I would expect it's absolutely fine and just a musically simplistic track
that needs no more than that. The lowest bitrate track I have in my
lossless collection is an old Genesis demo from the late '60's which is
around 300 kbps.

Arnaud,
You are correct. The software such as it is is just a generic usb driver

More Goldwave Questions.

2007-11-17 Thread Vinny Samarco
Hi,
First of allWhat is the sampling rate for commercial cds? II have a
player that is about 5 years old and only plays cds, not mp3.
The other question I have is that at least with Window-eyes, I am not
able to read the sampling rate most times when I go to that prompt. Even
yousing the mouse keys, or read current line, the sampling rate only pops up
once in a while. Do any of you have this problem?
Thanks very much.

you should be able to tab over to a list of file types, don't know
whether your screenreader will tell you if they're checked when you
arrow through them, but what I usually do, is just hit the all
button, so all file types that winamp can handle are associated with it

Re: A USB turn table question:

2007-11-17 Thread Matthew Bullis
Also, I'm a bit leary when they say you can play your 33s and 78s, without
giving you a specific needle for the 78s. You can play the 78s with the 33
needle, but the sound quality won't be as good, because of the difference in
the width of the two different-sized grooves. I've not actually bought one
of these USB turntables, since I'm content with connecting my turntable the
analog way, but they may or may not offer the arm with the unscrewable
cartridge. If they do offer the unscrewing option, then you'd just have to
buy the headshell with a 78 needle or remove the 33 needle and put in the 78
one every time you wanted to switch.
Thanks a lot.

Re: Problem Playing WMA Files In Winamp

2007-11-17 Thread Dan Thompson
Great to hear back from you. Thanks for all your help iin the past. Here
is an account. Please keep it to yourself. I keep the memberrship small

username: dj

password: doctor-p

Before you start searching or reaching my site, make the following changes
in Internet Explorer if necessary.

1. When Internet Explorer is opened, go to tools.

2. Move to Internet Options and click on it.

3. Move to the advanced property sheet and tab once into the list of
options.

4. Locate "enable view of ftp folders or sites" and make sure it is on.

5. Go to okay and click on it.

6. Sometimes a few users need to make an additional change. This would
involve going back into tools, internet options, advanced and move down to
"use passive ftp for firewall and dsl modem compatibility." If this is off
and you can't get connected, check it on. If it is on already and you are
not able to get on the site, uncheck it. Remember to uncheck or check an
item, press the spacebar. Then go to okay and press enter.

7. Each time you make any change to Internet Explorer, you must exit
Internet Explorer and restart the program so the changes will hold. the
changes will not hold unless you exit inernet explorer and reopen it.

Now follow the rest of these directions.

1. Go to Internet Explorer or whatever browser you are using and press
ctrl-o. You could also move to your address bar.

2. Type in the ftp site below in lowercase and without the quotes.

"ftp://buffy:[EMAIL PROTECTED]"

and press enter or click okay.

3. You should be connected. However, sometimes a few users need to type in
the site's address without the username and password already in the string.
Then once connected, they must enter their username and password.

So if this happens just go to the address bar and type in
ftp://danthompson.d2g.com and click okay or press enter.

Then Press alt plus the letter f to reach the file menu.

Next Press the letter a to enter the log-in box.

Next enter your username.

Next tab to the password box and type in your password.

Finally tab to log in and press enter.

HOW TO DOWN LOAD FROM THE SITE

Keyboard users, move to the song or folder you want to copy and press
control plus c.

mouse users, Move to the songs or folder you wish to copy and press your
right mouse button.

Then click on copy.

2. Move to a directory where you wish your selection to be placed.

Keyboard users, Press control plus the letter v to paste.

Mouse users, Press your right mouse button and click on paste.

GOOD LUCK!!

If there isn't something you wish, please let me know.

How to Upload:

1. Locate the directory or material you wish to upload on your computer and
copy it to the clipboard by pressing control plus the letter c.

2. Access my site.

3. There is a what's new folder under the root directory of the music drive,
uunder programs and in books&tutorials and in the applications folder. So
depending on what you are sharing, move to the what's new folder inthhe
appropriate area and press control plus the letter v. Mouse users just press
your right mouse button and then choose the paste option.

Hi Trace.

That's a really open question as the best amplifier you could get could be
more than £10,000 with a similar amount for a pair of speakers.

However, I'd suggest you take a look at the award winners section of
www.superfi.co.uk

I've just bought a Roksan Kandy LIII integrated amplifier and a pir of
Tannoy DC Sensys speakers for a combined sum of £1,050 and I've been really
pleased with them.

Re: Stereo Receivers and amplifier's

2007-11-17 Thread DJ DOCTOR P
High Kevin and Sunshine,
I started out with a JVC 7.1 surround sound AV receiver, but I traded it in
for an Onkio 7.1 surround sound AV receiver.
I done that because the onkio receiver sounds a hole lot better with my
Klipch speakers.
Sure this equipment is very costly, but you can't get this kind of sound out
of cheep or moderate priced equipment.
I have a Macintosh MC-275 tube amp in my bed room, I have it hooked up to a
Sunfire classic all tube preamp.
And I'm driving it with a Denon 5-disc CD changer.
And I have a pare of Bell-Klipch speakers.
That system alone is a very smooth sounding system.
Again, you can't get this kind of sound from cheep or moderate priced
equipment.
Hope this helps.
  John.

Hey gang,

Has winamp lost the CDDB option in version 5.5? I was trying to get
information about a CD and when I went to the CDDB button it said that it
wasn't installed. What happened to it? The Gracenet service has always been
a part of the program. This is strange.

Re: Soundforge and reducing hiss, static, etc.

2007-11-17 Thread Curtis Delzer
If you upgrade to sf9, you get the noise reduction for no added charge, at
least I did, for a total upgrade price at the time of $99.95, which was very
nice. You might be able to buy it all for $149.95? including noise
reduction, it really is worth it since, even if you don't like 9 which I
don't for reasons well known on this list, the noise reduction is updated
from 2.0A to 2.0G which costs by itself more than the upgrade cost, and it
works with all versions of Sound Forge from v4.5 and up.

Those JPEG files take up no space at all so I'd recommend keeping them to

Sure! I'm not knocking anyone, the point I was making was that the
Noise Reduction plug-ins marketed alongside Sound Forge are not the be-
al and end-all of plug-ins. I'll have the information later on today.

I'm using soundforge 6.0, I think it is, the cheap version. I
 know I
 can't
elminate all hiss or some static I've found in a couple recordings
 I've
done, but is there anything I can do to cut that noise down?
 Also, I'd
 like
to upgrade but I think I don't know where to find our serial
 number. Can
anyone help? As always, I'm much obliged!

I can tell you Richard that Rockbox is a piece of software written by
VI guys I believe, to make some Ipods and other non-speaking portable
players accessible via speech feedback.

Seems in pretty well all instances installing this software, well,
firmware modification, invalidates the warranty that comes with
players.

Sure if you do a search Google will come up with the places you can
download it.

(All this from someone who's not cool enough to own an IPod or any
other MP3/AAC player, though I've got a Zenstone.)

Hi all

My name is Richard.

I'm a musician and I'm interested to know more about audio.

Recently, I posted few questions on this list concerning the
accessibility
of mp3 players.

What's rockbox?

I don't know if my emails are coming through this list but I don't
understand I get any response on basic questions that passionated
people
like you should know answers about.

Hope someone could help me.

Ah I see what you're talking about now. No, its not out of the leagues
of anyone, that's why I suggested these things in the first place
because they're a cheap and accessible alternative.
