Since the decoders are made the same, you can transfer files without difficulty. I'm ripping in WMA lossless and all is well.

Also can I assume that if I rip using 2 machines then I can add the second machine's contents to the first's music folder and that Windows Media Player will add them to the library and treat them as if they'd been ripped on the first machine?
