Re: Advanced Audio Coding
I may be wrong, but my understanding is that AAC is an implementation of the MPEG4 standard. This didn't surprise me, at all, when I read it at Wikipedia, as I cannot hear any difference between the .AAC files I rip from CDs and the .M4A files I uploaded from my brother's IPod. But I prefer .AAC simply because it produces a smaller file - about a tenth of a meg smaller per CD. With the hundreds of CDs I've ripped to my Maxtor, that adds up. Re: Playing time of MP3
Along the same line, is there a tool which will tell you the total playing time of an m3u play list; or, conversely, could one group a bunch of mp3s together in the same folder and find out the playing time of all files when played together? There is no given length for the time of a specific file based on the file size, because of how it's produced, what bitrate it's at, sampling rate also comes into play, etc. If you use JAWS and Winamp, any version from 2.9 up to the current 5.24, press control insert pluss t and you will be told how long the file is in minutes and seconds. Similarly, if you press alt plus shift plus t, the elapsed time of the currently playing track will be spoken. you can also do this while a track is paused. Finally, to get the remaining time of the track, control plus shift plus t is what you'll want to press. If you don't use JAWS however, you can press control plus j and the jump to time dialogue box will open. You will be told how long the file is and it'll give you the opportunity to jump to a specific point in the file, in minutes and seconds. So if you have a 65 minute long file, and you want to jump 25 minutes and 15 seconds in, press control plus j and then type the following: 25:15 and press enter. and then you should be taken to that point in the file. Re: Playing time of MP3
hi, Winamp will do this. If you load an m3u file into winamp, or open a directory or multiple directories or whatever, it will tell you the estimated time, unless you go into general preferences and i believe the fourth one down in the tree, to load file information when it's loaded into winamp, as long as that's checked you can load your files, go into the playlist editor and hit alt+ctrl+g to generate an HTML page which will give you average track length and total time. Hi Bruce. Yes, as I said I've never used Flak and so was hoping the Bruce Springsteen example I provided may have been a track in your Flak collection that you could have compared with the 31 meg WMA lossless. I have plenty of other examples if you have a Flak track you'd like to compare, including some great Canadian musicians Rush and Bryan Adams Basically, any rock track you have in Flak, it's likely I'll have in my 8,000 WMA lossless collection and can let you know how much space is used for that track. Re: Windows Media Audio
Hi Hayden. I'd absoluteley endorse what you're saying here. Encoding music is down to math and science and not subjective sampling done by your computer and so it's not a good idea to use different algorithms that decide which parts of the music they're going to throw away. However, I'd make one exception to your note below and that is in the case of WMA lossless. In this case, no sound quality has been compromised in the compression and so you have the full frequency range and stereo imaging to play with. Therefore, you will not suffer the cross coding issues you mention by creating an MP3 or other format file from a WMA lossless file. This of course is true for creating any format from any lossless format. Regards. Also a note, for those people who do have say WMA files, I hope you aren't say going into GoldWave and converting them into MP3 discs. This is called cross-coding. For those who don't have acute hering, this is not a great problem. However, cross-coding introduces things called "artifacts" into the recording quality. Say for example when you download mp3 clips off the internet and you hear that sort of "twinkle" in the background. That is sometimes due to cross coding but most of the time in that situation it is due to low bitrates. That is one of a few examples I could give of cross-coding. The only situation where you should be converting files is from a .wav file to a compressed file (IE. .mp3 .ogg .aac, etc.). As the .wav file is not compressed and is the original audio of everything being at a bitrate of 1403K (this usually being on CD's). - Original Message - From: "Richard Claypool" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: "PC audio discussion list. Re: Playing time of MP3
There's been a lot of methods already mentioned here for accurately checking track duration of MP3 files. However, if you're looking for a simple way of estimating track duration and you know the bit rates of the files in question, a rough guide is that an MP3 file encoded at 128kbps will yield 1 meg for each minute of music. So if you have 200 meg of MP3 files all encoded around 128kbps then you've got 200 minutes of music. Of course, if your MP3 files are closer to 320kbps you can very roughly say that a 5 minute track will take up approximately 10 meg of disc space. Regards. nero 6 ultra addition
hi folks, does anyone know how to make a successful multi-session CD, using Nero 6 Ultra Addition? I have an associate in Chicago who has a bunch of audio wave files and quite a few document files, all needing to be put onto one CD. The audio files need to play in standard CD players, while the documentation files need to be able to be accessed by a standard PC. A multi-session CD is what we need, so that the files will be available in both environments. I have read the john wilson tutorial on nero and he claims that in nero 6, he finds no way to perform a multi session cd, as he claims that it is a visual thing. i just cannot believe that this is in fact the case, so wish to know if anyone has in fact tried to burn a multi session cd with nero. hi all, If anyone else on this list uses a gigabeat and creates playlists on it, could you please drop me a line? I'm wanting to put books and music on the device, however I don't want to have to keep skipping to continue reading and have the music after. Is there any way to create a playlist that will do this? How do playlists on the gigabeat work, can you skip songs, albums or nothing at all? thanks Brandon Hicks Email: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Skype: callto://reyuth msn: [EMAIL PROTECTED] ___ PC-Audio List Help, Guidelines, Archives and more... http://www.pc-audio.org To unsubscribe from this list, send a blank email to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] This list is a service of MosenExplosion.com. That is not always true. Different methods of mp3 encoding and different versions of the encoder may produce different sizes of files. Re: nero 6 ultra addition
Hi Roger, I think there is a way to do this and if anyone has any additional feedback send it along. First, open nero burning rom. Once you have it open, set up the following options in the property sheet. Choose the multi session radio button and make sure you're on the audio CD page. From this point hit space on the new button. Then hit ctrl-d to add the files to your compilation and once it's complete, burn it as you would. Tony - Original Message - From: "Roger R. nero and mixed mode
i had posted some rather incorrect terminology to a previous message, concerning nero's ability to burn what i wrote were multi-session cd's. the correct question, just so i get a correct answer is --- how does one set up and burn appropriately a mixed mode cd, to facilitate letting the files which will be both wave and documentation files all reside and be able to be accessed on that same cd. I have over 20 Bruce Springsteen songs that were burned for me. Some of them were burned using MP3, and some using WMA. You don't upload them to lj, you have to have your own web-server somewhere like I do, I upload my voicepost things to http://www.tbrn.net/archives/psychorabbit/psychorabbit/voicepost/ or http://onj.andrelouis.com/voicepost and then I just link to it on my live journal. - Original Message - From: "Brandon Hicks" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: "PC audio discussion list. Re: voiceposts on LJ
hi. Live journal also has many US phone numbers that can be called to voice post on. You can get a list of these by going to http://www.livejournal.com/phonepost/ and you could then, in theory at least, call one of those numbers on a phone if you have free unlimited long distance as i do. or until the end of the year, skype is offering free phone calls in the US and Canada, so you could do that as well. This feature works out for people who don't have a web server to upload audio files to, or don't have the necessary equipment to record audio files. So while Haden's method sure works out great, that's another option to consider too. RE: voiceposts on LJ
hi. a voicepost and a phonepost are 1 and the same. Just a different term for the same thing. LJ does not have upload space for you, so you'll need to find one and link to it in your post like haden does, or if you're in the US, call any of the designated phone numbers lj has. You can have phoneposts, or voiceposts on these phone calls saved as either mp3 or ogg files. you can choose what kind you want in the preferences for phone posts. I can send you the program if you use skype or msn. The books are from nls and book share. Re: bipos question
hi leslie, is the program you're using called biblos? It might be creating MP3 files that are too low of a bitrate for your book courier. If you have gold wave or some such editing software, you might try, and this won't help the quality but it might help the courier, saving them at a higher rate, instead of 22.5KHZ save them as 44.1. I can't remember the specs on what the courier supports at the moment. Other than that, I'd suggest trying D Speech or Text Aloud or Text Sound, all good programs. You might have more luck there. Re: nero and mixed mode
Hi Roger, In the property sheet, there's an option for burning a mix mode CD. I've never done this myself but if you choose that option and the multi session radio button, I think it will work in the same manner. Good luck with it. Tony - Original Message - From: "Roger R. Try audio blog Http://www.audioblogg.com or audio blogger Http://www.audioblogger.com. Audio blogger is still free I think; But you can only use your phone. Audio blog costs around $5 a month. Re: A skype out problem
Hi Don, I don't have any answers, but wanted to add that I am experiencing the same problem. The quality seems to be a little better since the release of 2.5, but it still isn't quality that I would want to write home about. Re: A skype out problem
I've had some very good quality experiences with SkypeOut, both in terms of calls I place and in terms of the one SkypeOut call I've received, which was last week. I wonder how much of it has to do with what kind of a mike you're using. Since the fidelity of a PC-to-PC call is much higher, perhaps the SkypeOut service isn't properly filtering out some residuals and harmonics or other frequencies that your mike is sending out which are inconsequential with PC-to-PC calls. Perhaps I don't know what I'm talking about. At this late hour, anything's possible. I'm not sure I'd understand this message if I read it.
