hi leslie, is the program you're using called biblos? It might be creating MP3 files that are too low of a bitrate for your book courier. If you have gold wave or some such editing software, you might try, and this won't help the quality but it might help the courier, saving them at a higher rate, instead of 22.5KHZ save them as 44.1. I can't remember the specs on what the courier supports at the moment. Other than that, I'd suggest trying D Speech or Text Aloud or Text Sound, all good programs. You might have more luck there.
