MS Word and VoiceOver

2016-08-29 Thread becky knaub
Hi all,
Does MS office 2016 work well with VoiceOver? I have office 2011 at the moment
and it doesn't work very well with voiceover. To the point of it's not useful
at all. Is there anyway I can make word work better on my Mac? I'm not sure if
there are any kind of script or anything I can install? Thanks for the help.

Hi GIGI,
what about turning the speech off by using the three fingered double tap and
then turning it back on. I don't have a 4s tet because VZ suddenly changed
there contracts so now I have to wait til October to get Siri. But I have a
friend who has it and she had the same problem. She does it the way you are
doing it now.

Re: Siri and voice over coexisting not peacefully all the time

2012-03-05 Thread Becky Knaub
Maybe for the next IOS they need to have a bridge since VO and Siri create a
feedback loop just like Jaws and Dragon do if you don't have JSAY or the Old
versions of Kurzweil and JAWS when you had to shut off the speech or it
crashed. I would let apple know this happens often so they can fix it.

Accessible Excel for the mac or something not as hard to use and confusing as Numbers

2012-03-29 Thread Becky Knaub
Hi All,
So I am writing because I need to use excel for one of my classes and I just
can't seem to get a good grasp on numbers not to mention I can't seem to find
the statistical functions I need. So does anyone have any good suggestions for
an Excel like program that is not so confusing and doesn't have a boat load of
accessibility issues? Thanks .

Re: Braille displays

2012-04-05 Thread Becky Knaub
hi guys,
I didn't ever have the lap top just the old apple 2 e and I just had to cary
the perkins from class to class in middle and high school until I went to
overbook. Then I had the computer and the braille window, I loved that display
even though it was big and the braille lite 40 which I really didn't think was
that great. I am really curious how you read BRF files as well, what if you
want to read them with braille and VO? What do you use for Mac with Lion.

The trick to Preview

2012-04-08 Thread Becky Knaub
Hi Kirsten,
The trick to preview for me is interacting with it like a web page. I am
running Lion so don't know if that makes a difference or not.
I use this as Pages and Text edit will only read one page at a time and then I
have to press VO A to get the next page even though that command should read
the whole document. Someone told me to set my text edit a certain way but that
doesn't seem to make a difference. anyway Use the VO keys and the right arrow
to move until you here HTML content and then interact with it.then you can use
your VO commands like normal.
If you use your VO keys and the left arrow you can go to the list of pages in
the document and interact with it and choose which page you want.
Just incase anyone wants to know.

Re: Bookshare update

2012-07-30 Thread Becky Knaub
this is correct. I am attending College to get my masters in Vision rehab
therapy and I am almost done. I have had bookshare for free since I started.
I had to send in my name, college name, what year I was in although since I am
working on my masters I just put that. It worked quite well. You can always
correspond with Bookshare via email if you aren't sure about what else might be
needed. That's what I did.

Hope that helps.

Meanwhile, I just received an e-mail from Bookshare stating that
downloading will soon be more streamlined: essentially, one will be able

downloading daisy with images, daisy, brf, audio, and mp3. Also, your

Bookshare is $75 for the first year and $50 after that. If you are a student
including a college student it is free if you send them the information to
verify that you are a student.

Re: Blackboard Question

2012-07-30 Thread Becky Knaub
Les,
When I used Blackboard with my Mac I used Omniweb since safari would
continuously say busy and just gave me a lot of trouble. It worked much better
in Omniweb.I would suggest you try that and see if it works better. If you are
using ML I am not sure how it'll be but with Lion it worked really well.

Hope that helps.

 Hello Gigi and Others,

There is a VoiceOver downloads page that gives a link to the Lighthouse
for the Blind in San Francisco, but so far it has not been updated for
Mountain Lion. So the links for downloading the VoiceOver Getting Started
Guide in a web browser, and also to the electronic braille version in .brf
format, still point to Lion. As far as I can tell, versions for Mountain
Lion have yet been prepared on these sites. At some point this page
should be updated, but right now it points to Lion versions:
 http://www.apple.com/accessibility/voiceover/downloads.html

It might help your friend to review some of the Vision Australia podcasts
on working with VoiceOver. Also, you can check the AppleVis Guides
 section:
 http://www.applevis.com/guides
 • "A Guide to Making the Switch from Using a Windows Screen Reader to
 VoiceOver On a Mac"
 http://www.applevis.com/guides/guide-making-switch-using-windows-screen-reader-voiceover-mac
 • "VoiceOver Keyboard Shortcuts for Mac OS X"
 http://www.applevis.com/guides/voiceover-keyboard-shortcuts-mac-os-x
 • "General Keyboard Shortcuts for Mac OS X"
 http://www.applevis.com/guides/general-keyboard-shortcut-commands-mac-os-x
 • "VoiceOver Gestures for Use with a Multi-Touch TrackPad on Mac OS X"
 http://www.applevis.com/guides/voiceover-gestures-use-multi-touch-trackpad-mac-os-x

Incidentally, web versions of the "VoiceOver Getting Started" guides for
Mountain Lion in many different languages seem to be up, I'm a little
puzzled why William didn't automatically get this by arrowing down to the
last element of the VoiceOver help menu (brought up with VO-H). I don't
have Mountain Lion installed yet, so I can't check the language
localizations from the loaded packages, but the general rule for Mountain
Lion seems to be that you append the language localization code to the web
address. So you start with "help.apple.com", slash, "voiceover", slash,
"info", slash, "guide", slash, "10.8", slash, and then add your
localization code. If you don't add a localization, it defaults to
English, and resolves to an ending of "English.lproj/index.html". This is:
 http://help.apple.com/voiceover/info/guide/10.8/English.lproj/index.html

In general, most language localization codes are two letters, followed by
a period and the five letter word "lproj" and end with a slash, or a slash
followed by "index.html" (either should work). But the older way is to
type out the language, such as "Dutch" and "German" and "English", so it's
a bit confusing that you use "German.lproj" or "Dutch.lproj" while French,
Greek, Danish, and Finnish use the newer two letter code convention of
 "fr.lproj", "el.lproj", "da.lproj", and "fi.lproj" (with lower case
letters). In the case of Chinese, to distinguish between simplified
characters and traditional characters, the language code adds a two letter
country designation in caps after an underbar: "zh_CN.lproj" and
"zh_TW.lproj", so the VoiceOver user guides in these versions become:
 • Chinese (Simplified Characters)
 http://help.apple.com/voiceover/info/guide/10.8/zh_CN.lproj/index.html
 • Chinese (Traditional Characters)
 http://help.apple.com/voiceover/info/guide/10.8/zh_TW.lproj/index.html
But in most cases, there's a simple two letter code for the language, such
as "ar" for Arabic, "ja" for Japanese, "pl" for Polish, etc.

Anyone who has trouble viewing current "VoiceOver Getting Start

Hi Les,
No Omniweb isn't in the app store. I googled it and it came right up.I don't
have the link on hand but there might be someone else who does. If so hopefully
they'll chime in. As for the frames, it works pretty well. I could access all
of the discussion board including all posts. You do have to fiddle with it
sometimes. Sometimes using quick nab worked best and other times you could get
away with not using it. Hope this helps.

Have you tried the vo and F to search for the start of the page such as
searching for sort. Sometimes that works. If not what about setting the rotor

Learning Ally's is called the RFB&D reader. There is a version that reads all
daisy files such as bookshare but it costs more and I think you have to be a

Speech recognition on the mac

Hi all,
does anyone know if you can use this option to dictate instead of type
documents, emails etc.? If so how do you do it and does it work with VO? If it
works like this can it work with pages or text edit?

Thanks

Accidently did something to make the downloads folder disappear

2012-01-04 Thread Becky Knaub
Hi All,
I don't know what I did but my downloads folder is not on the dock, how do I
access it. I don't think I deleted it but may have and not realized it when I
emptied the trash, can someone help me? I need access to it for classes, I have
college classes on line that I download documents for. Oh one other question I
have thought about making it so my computer can run windows by partitioning the
hD but wondered if I got a external hard drive if using that would work. So
would it?

Thanks,

ton of work. SO does anyone have any suggestions for an accessible app that
would function like a to do list but for assignments that I could check off
after they are done? I guess what I am looking for is kind of like a homework
planner. I just want to make sure I don't miss out on doing all my assignments,
I already put their due dates in my calendar which was the first time I used
Ical. it was interesting experience but I figured it out.

Blackboard Accessible

2012-01-11 Thread Becky Knaub
Hi Shanna,
I use black board with VoiceOver, I know it was just updated for my university
while we were on break. I find VO works pretty well with it, I have used it
with VO for 2 semesters soon to be three when this semester is over and Jaws fr
the other 4, I would say both work alright with it. I can and do participate on
the discussion board and can access all of the links on my professor's pages.
I am using Safari for BlackBoard tough rather then Google Chrome which I just
installed to see if it would work better than Safari. Use the track pad or VO
keys with BB not quick nab because sometimes they don't work and try
interacting with the content, this will allow VO to read and work with the
discussion Board. HTH

tips on Navigating Chrome with VO

2012-01-11 Thread Becky Knaub
Hi,
I just downloaded and installed chrome to give it a try. I tried to use
Blackboard on it and it wouldn't work at all, even when I tried interacting
with Blackboard. I was hoping it would work because Safari does work but often
does the "Safari Busy" thing which is annoying and time consuming. If anyone
one has some tips for using chrome that would be great. Thanks.

question regarding trackpad

2012-01-11 Thread Becky Knaub
Hi all,
so I was wondering why if I do a 3 finger scroll down on the trackpad VO won't
start reading there. If you do it on the iPhone it works so I am wondering if I
am doing something wrong or missing a step.

Thanks again.

Re: ToDo by Appigo - anyone tried it?

2012-01-16 Thread Becky Knaub
Hi Garth,
todo list is a great app for the Mac. It works very well with VO and is fully
accessible. I just downloaded it last week to keep track of the 5 grad level
classes I am taking. I found it is very easy to use. If you can see then you
can change the background and font. I can't so I really don't bother with this
option but I have to say it does a great job in helping me keep track of what
is done and what needs done and even has reminders which can be set. I think it
was like 1.99 or something but it might have been cheaper.

OCR programs for the scanner and a printer question

2012-01-22 Thread Becky Knaub
Hi all,
I just got my wireless printer hooked up and ready to go, It came with my Mac
but I needed sighted assistance since its wireless. It is a printer scanner
combo. I want to know if there are any affordable apps that do the same or
similar to Kurzwiel does.

I aslo want to know how to move around the printer screen since some of it
doesn't appear to be accessible. I have never printed with a mac before so
today was the first time. My Dad had to click with the trackpad since VO wasn't
cooperating. Thanks

Pages can save and open RTF, Doc and DOcx formats to name a few. Unless you
pull down the disclose option I think it is called in save as you will find
your documents are saved in pages format. As for open office I am not sure

When I first got my Mac and knew practically nothing, I asked

The answer I got back was that I could read articles on it and that they

So I am getting this program as a birthday present, can anyone tell me how it

documents. Has anyone tried it? How well does this program work with VO? Does
anyone know if the epson printer scanner that is wireless and comes with the
Mac is able to do the scanning we as blind people require?

Word 2013 for Mac, Accessible or Not?

2013-03-20 Thread Becky Knaub
Hi All,
I was just wondering if Word for the Mac is accessible or not. Could somebody
please let me know. Thanks I really appreciate it. If it is accessible with
voiceover how well does it work? And if it is successful are there any problems
that anyone is noticed? How what I've seen of it looks very interesting and
easier to use than a lot of the word programs that Apple have put out.

Re: office software

2012-09-16 Thread Becky Knaub
Hi Chris,
I use pages, text edit or Bean. I use pages for writing documents that may need
more then text edit can give me as far as features and text edit for the simple
documents that don't require a lot of features. I use being mostly for reading
documents because pages tends to stop each page while bean will read
continuously.

Bookshare books on the Mac

2012-10-03 Thread Becky Knaub
Hi All,
I am trying to download a book from Bookshare on my Mac and the xmls format is
not working. Does anyone have any ideas or can any body tell me a good way to
convert BRFs into actual words that VO can read or if not could anyone
recommend a good daisy player that works well with ML?

Thanks,

Alex,
I get the following message.
There was a problem loading an audio file.
Please check the book format for problems.
Olearia will now reset as this book will not play
I am not sure how you unzip the books. I tried to open them in Olearia 2
different ways. the first was to open them once I was in Olearia and the second
was to go to the folder where I have the books and open them that way.
Thanks.

Hi Greg,
I did not really get anything from the list when I asked this question. ALex
gave me some suggestions with opening the books in Olearia but they didn't
work.So I wrote bookshare support about this. Apparently there is a new program
for the computer which is called read out loud and actually works pretty good
but can be buggy at times. You download the daisy text file and open in in
readout loud and it reads it just like read to go. HTH.

If you want instructions on the program download and instalation email me off

Questions

2011-10-05 Thread Becky Knaub
Hi all,
Do Focus 40 Blue braille displays work with the MAC?
If they do as I think they do Could anyone tell me how to make My MBP detect
the display when its plugged in the USB port? It won't detect the display
either way ad I have tried everything I can think of.
Since I really need the display to work so I can edit my papers for school I
would appreciate if anyone could help.

Second Is it possible to play ogg files on the mac and if so what version of
the software would I need to get for an MBP with Lion on it?

Thanks ,

commands for the mac using the Focus 40 Blue braille display

2011-10-17 Thread Becky Knaub
Hi,
Does anyone know where to get a list of the commands for the Mac that can be
done when using the focus 40 blue braille display? I got it to connect via blue
tooth finally. I thank the update. Because before the update it wouldn't work
no matter how hard I tried. I get it to recognize when I connect via USB but
the display itself won't show any braille on it.

THanks,

Question about speech recognition on the mac

2011-11-01 Thread Becky Knaub
Hi All,
So I know there is speech recognition on the mac, and I have quite a few
questions about it.

1. Is it compatible with Voice Over?
2. How does it work with VO?
3. How good is the quality of it, how is it with picking up your words and
writing them correctly.

Thanks.

Re: Iphone stuttering, frequency, triggers, recurrence

2016-12-14 Thread becky knaub
I have experienced it with the South African English voice. I keep the
Australian English voice running all the time which is what I generally use as
it can speak fast without sounding completely goofy like Alex does. I do like
him though but he just doesn't sound right when I have them speak as quickly as
I can. I keep the south African English voice set at a slower speed so I don't
have to mess with my voice when I want to show somebody how to do something
with the iPhone and voiceover.

 Anyone experiencing this?

OT The braille note and the index Everest D v4

2016-11-10 Thread becky knaub
Hi all,
Please email me off list if you have an answer to the following questions. I
have a client who is a braille note apex user and we are trying to get her
Everest braille embosser to work with her braille note. Unfortunately it will
work some of the time and then start brailling a bunch of gibberish. If you
know if the braille note actually works well with The Everest and the settings
that I should need to check please let me know. If you could tell me why does
braille correctly and then go to writing in gibberish that would be even more
helpful. Thanks for your help. Please email me at becnc...@gmail.com. if you
can help answer these questions. I wasn't sure where else to turn.

Re: KNFB Reader on Iphone

2016-11-15 Thread becky knaub
Hi,
I'm not sure if it will or not. Sometimes things like that will but if there's
any kind of glare or anything it won't. I would suggest if you need to read the
computer screen using TapTapSee, Be My Eyes or BeSpecular. I have used
TapTapSee and Be My Eyes to read things on the computer that VoiceOver wasn't
reading.

Hi, I don't know if you know this but there is the setting to turn raise to
speak off. That might stop the issue if you find it unhelpful. I hope that
helps.

else have any ideas? It seems like one and three both require you to press
harder.

I have the same problem. Voiceover is extremely loud but the alarm is pretty
soft. Luckily I am an extremely light sleeper so I don't have any problems.
Just wish voiceover wasn't so loud.
