creating a new itunes library

2014-12-03 Thread Marissa Manzino
Hi everyone,

DOes anyone know how to create an itunes library? I have two different users
and would like them to each have their own library. It seems that when I ipen
Itunes and hold down the option key, this does not bring up the dialog to
choose new library. Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong? THank you for any
assistance.

Musically,
Allison

Re: Pages - auto page numbering in footer

2014-12-03 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Phil,

Sorry for the delay in answering this question but I needed sighted help and my
husband didn’t have time until now.

VoiceOver misreports the page number. If you want to know what it really says,
you have to highlight the number field and use the New TextEdit window with
selection service. I always have a short cut for this as it has been extremely
useful in Pages for years.

Cheers,

Anne

I would strongly recommend the Learning VoiceOver with the Mac book from
National Braille Press. Also, I would strongly recommend getting a subscription
to the Mac Masters Series from Fedora Outlier LLC. The web site is
www.fedoraoutlier.com . Hope this helps. Also,
you should seek out www.applevis.com , and look under

thanks Ann,
What a quirky little beast pages is. To date, I am using it only to assemble
draft files I have created and formatted in text edit, into a final document.
It’s only draw for me is the headers and footers capability, and use of tables.
Using the formatting features, specifically the styles features is something I
don’t bother with any more.

As Alex mentioned, DropBox, Google Drive and some others create a folder in

Re: creating a new itunes library

Hi,

If you created two users, one for each from within the Users & Groups pane of
System Preferences, then you would automatically have two separate iTunes
Libraries as well as two different everything related to each user. All apps

Respectfully, I don’t know how complex the pdf files are that you are working
with Tim. My average article has 140 pages, with several headings and sub
headings not to mentions captions, end notes, foot notes and complicated
formatting which is typical of academic journals. A lot of these also have
several pictures in them so they are pretty complex. I would imagine if its a
pdf file with, say 20 or even 40 pages with no fancy formatting or pictures,
there would be no problems.

Re: Pages - auto page numbering in footer

2014-12-03 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Phil,

I’ve reported the problem of VoiceOver misreporting the page number to Apple
Accessibility but I doubt anything will be done about it for a good while yet.
The comforting thing to know is that the pages are in fact numbered correctly
and there is a way to verify this.

I like Pages for writing as it’s so easy to apply a paragraph style now that we
have the short cuts back. It’s true that in the latest version of Pages and
Yosemite, we’ve lost the ability to reach the menu button with VO, but we can
still do it using either the trackpad or Mouse keys.

When using Pages, I often set hotspots in various places to make it easier to
get information quickly.

Cheers,

Anne

Western Digital accessibility of WD My Cloud storage devices

2014-12-03 Thread Andrew Lamanche
Hi Listers,

I recently asked questions about WD My Cloud storage device application
accessibility. Frustrated by lack of accessibility for such an interesting
device, I have been writing to WD to try to make them understand the
difficulties Voiceover users face. Firstly, I had issued a support ticket on
their website to which initially I received no answer. Worried that they might
shove accessibility under the carpet, I had an idea of finding them on
Facebook. I wrote on their wall outlining the difficulties I was having with
their desktop app and urging them to improve accessibility. Much to my
surprise and subsequently excitement, I got a positive response. WD team
member has also just responded to my support case, asking for more details of
my difficulties which I have just responded too.

I was just wondering whether it might help if others who also have this device
and already said they had trouble accessing the desktop app, could also write
on WD’s wall on Facebook. I mean write courteously and firmly with a request
for improvements to accessibility, especially if you had tried other related
software to the WD My cloud devices. I hope we may be on the winner here.
never thought Facebook carried so much clout!

Best wishes

Andrew

Re: Why aren't my pdf files reading any longer?

2014-12-03 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi Faisal,

Admittedly, the pdf’s I frequently access are not as large as you’ve mentioned,
although, just for investigative purposes, I opened a pdf I used to access on
Open Directory Administration within OS X Servers. This pdf is 295 pages long
with many or most of the elements you mentioned in the academic articles you
are required to read. Upon opening it, VO announced that the document was 295
pages long and landed me on the pdf Content area. I interacted twice and began
reading with no issues. Of course, I didn’t take the time to read all 295
pages but whether I went line by line or VO-a to start reading from where I
was, VO read the pdf just fine. I realize that there are issues within Preview
and it’s handling of certain tables and such within the document, but the
headings, sub-headings and other textual content was read normally. Images
and/or figure 2, for example, were not read for obvious reasons. I guess what
I’m saying is that I don’t believe that the size of the file is the issue. I’m
not sure what the issue is, nor am I trying to say that there’s no problems at
all with Preview, but, I appear to be able to use Preview just fine with most
pdfs.

Re: Why aren't my pdf files reading any longer?

2014-12-03 Thread Andrew Lamanche
Hi Tim,

It’s very curious that you have had no issues with Preview since upgrading to
yosemite. For me, the problems started exactly after I had upgraded to the
latest OS. I wonder whether you think that this may have something to do with
the age of the mac I have. My macbook air is late 2010 and has only 4GB RAM.
However this was never a problem under Maverick. The other strange thing is
that quite often, if I call up contextual menu on a pdf file and choose open
with, instead of the usual list of apps that I might choose to open the said
pdf file with, I get just one result, i.e. fetching. I have no idea what
fetching is. There’s nothing else in the list. This is most odd.

Best wishes

Andrew

Online Banking Accessibility

2014-12-03 Thread Brian Fischler
Hey all,

I wanted to check if anyone on the list in banking with Chase and how is their
website with VO accessibility? I am banking with Citibank and have been for 15
years, and am fed up with them, as Citibank completely redesigned their website
and in doing so broke all accessibility on the mac, and their customer service
will not handle some basic tasks for me over the phone, so I am fed up.
Currently Citibank’s iPhone app works pretty good with VO, but who knows if
they decide to redesign it and with their history of completely ignoring
accessibility I am finally looking in to switching banks. I also have heard
that Chase’s iPhone app works pretty good with VO on the iPhone, so if you use
it and confirm this is true it would be appreciated. Thanks,

Re: Why aren't my pdf files reading any longer?

2014-12-03 Thread Faisal ali
Andrew,
I’ve been having issues with it as well and I’m running a late 2013 mac book
pro with 16 gigs of ram.
I guess my main issue is when you find yourself in a page with a picture on it.
Being able to navigate away from it was problematic for me. If you were able to
find out how to do this Tim, I’d love to know. there have also been pdf files
that upon interacting, it just said pdf content are and nothing more

Re: Why aren't my pdf files reading any longer?

2014-12-03 Thread Joseph
Hello,
Here's something rather strange that I found about reading PDF files.
In many instances, I can get the PDF to read if I use Open With and select
Safari.
What's strange is that many times when on a web page where a pdf file is
brought up, it will not read the file. But when I open the file from my local
machine, it usually works.
Just interact and read. Remember that this isn't a way to use table of contents
or the like, just reading a pile of text.
But after you interact, you can use VO Shift PageDown or PageUp to read in
paragraph units.
HTH.

Re: MAMP

2014-12-03 Thread 'Chris Blouch' via MacVisionaries
You just have to turn it on in the apache config file. It's been a while
since I did it but I think it was in /etc/apache2/httpd.conf and I had
to remove the comment "#" from the front of the line that loaded the PHP
module. Just pulled it up and the line should be like this:

LoadModule php5_module libexec/apache2/libphp5.so

You'll have to stop and start apache after the change. I also modified
the php5_module to process all .html files and not just .php files:

#CB 10/8/14 Added .html so PHP is processed on all files
AddType application/x-httpd-php .php .html
AddType application/x-httpd-php-source .phps

DirectoryIndex index.html index.php

This was on OSX 10.7 but should be similar for newer versions of OSX. I
really need to upgrade that web server box :)

Hi there,

I was having some problems with my installation of MAMP, so I have removed
it and downloaded the most recent version and installed it.

I am unable to get to the default web location, I just get the main start
page. When I click on the "My Website" link, I get a message that Safari
can't find www.localhost - Why would it be looking for www.localhost instead
of localhost and how can I change/fix this?

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Re: MAMP

2014-12-03 Thread BobH.
Not being a good Mac user yet, I don't know how you'd check if httpd or
apache were running, or how you make them run.

open a browser and type localhost, or 127.0.0.0 which is the same thing.

See what if anything, comes back.
If you get 404 page not found, then you don't have any kind of web service
running.
It's something that would need a lot of set up, certainly some setup for
security's sake.

I'd presume the Mail function would be available to PHP scripts, I have
been known to write a simple form in a small .html file, which points back
to a not very complicated .php file to process it, which submits contents
of the fields to the mail function; my simplest and quickest way to get an
email out without fuss.
I dare say a spammer could use an iteration loop to do it on mass.
But there's some useful basic stuff one can scribble in PHP you could
operate via local web pages. With sql running, you have a great database
system to do things with.
Could place to test file sets before uploading to your public hosting
platform or service.

This is what I used XAMPP for these past years. That was the Win version.

For stuff like this, I could really like Mac, if I could get to really like
its Editr.

Air drop

2014-12-03 Thread Jenine Stanley
This is what I get for not reading the threads about Air Drop.

I’m trying to send a file from my 2012 MBP to my iPhone. Both have the most
recent software updates. They cannot talk to each other via bluetooth though,
or so they say.

Given this fact, and given that the phone is a 5S and that’s the reason the
bluetooth doesn’t work, can Air Drop work?

I’ve tried it and I see a phone but I’m pretty sure it’s my 5 for work as it
has a different name than my personal 5S.

I’ve tried doing Air Drop from the menu of a file and see no “send” button.
I’ve tried it from the finder screen also with no luck.

Yes, its accessible. I’ve been using them for several years and use their bill

Re: MAMP

2014-12-03 Thread 'Chris Blouch' via MacVisionaries
Well, there are a lot of editors out there so you can use whatever you
like. Old school folks swear by (or at) vi while other just use TextEdit
with all the rich text stuff turned off. There are numerous other
editors out there including the one built into xCode but I'm sure folks
would chime in if you asked.

open a browser and type localhost, or 127.0.0.0 which is the same thing.

See what if anything, comes back.
If you get 404 page not found, then you don't have any kind of web service
running.
It's something that would need a lot of set up, certainly some setup for

I'd presume the Mail function would be available to PHP scripts, I have
been known to write a simple form in a small .html file, which points back
to a not very complicated .php file to process it, which submits contents

I dare say a spammer could use an iteration loop to do it on mass.
But there's some useful basic stuff one can scribble in PHP you could
operate via local web pages. With sql running, you have a great database
system to do things with.
Could place to test file sets before uploading to your public hosting

This is what I used XAMPP for these past years. That was the Win version.

For stuff like this, I could really like Mac, if I could get to really like
its Editr.

Hi there,

I was having some problems with my installation of MAMP, so I have
removed
it and downloaded the most recent version and installed it.

I am unable to get to the default web location, I just get the main start
page. When I click on the "My Website" link, I get a message that Safari
can't find www.localhost - Why would it be looking for www.localhost
instead
of localhost and how can I change/fix this?

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Air drop

2014-12-03 Thread Alex Hall
The bluetooth on the 5S will support Airdrop with no problem. On the phone, is
Airdrop set to "everyone"? That sometimes fixes things. To actually select your
phone on the Mac, remember that you'll need to find the table of devices,
interact, go to the row for the device, route the mouse there with vo-cmd-f5,
then click (or vo-shift-space).

Re: my experience with apple's technical support service.

2014-12-03 Thread Eugenia Firth
Hi there
Did you call the accessibility number, 877-204-3930? Because if you called the
regular AppleCare number, you should have been transferred there. In fact, I
don’t let any customer service people get away with getting another sighted
person to get involved. I found that increases the call time. With Apple, for
instance, most of the time, unless it is something that can’t be resolved over
the phone, the advisors know basic VoiceOver commands pretty well these days.
This didn’t used to be the case, but it has been my experience these days that
those senior advisors that are assigned to the accessibility line know at least
the basics of VoiceOver commands. I have had very good luck with the
accessibility line, and I must admit having called it many times during the
past three years.

Slow response on network drive

2014-12-03 Thread Rob Bender
Hello. I have a WD MyBook Live Duo network drive. I have very slow response
time when opening folders when using my MacBook Pro mid 2010 model. I have fast
response when accessing the drive from a Windows machine or with Windows 7
running under VMWare Fusion on my MaCBook. Does anyone have any ideas? I left
the MyBook drive formatted as NTFS so it is accessible from both Windows and
Mac. I also have the NTFS app from Paragon so I can write to NTFS drives from
the Mac.

Thanks for any ideas in advance.

David Woodbridge's book from iBooks

2014-12-03 Thread Juliette Swiler
I downloaded the book by David Woodbridge on my Mac from the iBooks store. But
when I open iBooks on the iPhone, the book doesn’t show up. Is this only able
to be viewed on the Mac? Thanks.

Re: David Woodbridge's book from iBooks

2014-12-03 Thread Andrew Lamanche
No, you should be able to read anything you get from ibooks either on your mac
or on your iOS devices. When you open ibooks on your iOS device, at the bottom
of the screen you have a few tabs. First one on the left is “my books”.
Double-tap it to select it and check whether your book is there. If not, you
could try and choose the rightmost tab which is “purchased” and you will be
taken to a screen where at the top you have a choice of either “all” or “not on
this device”. Check both of those. The book must be available to you. At
least all mine can be found in either this way.

Hello Lorie,

You can download a free iBook called Mastering the Macintosh with VoiceOver.

Also, when I purchased my first Mac, I also purchased a hardcopy user guide

is there a place where I can download a "Getting STarted with the Mac"

as I try to get the new machine up and running? I can listen to podcasts but if
I haven't interacted with the Mac yet it's hard to remember the content of them.

Thanks.

you're right. if you can put an Ibook in the braille note, I don't know
about it. I have't had any experience with Ibooks yet. I did a little
poking around on Applevis. guess I'll have to do some more.

Deleting photos permanently from photo stream

2014-12-03 Thread Lisette Wesseling
Hi all,
I know the rule used to be that if you deleted something from your iPhone
camera rol, it was deleted from photo stream, iPhoto and everything.
Now that the camera roll opens up iPhoto if you want to view all photos, how do
you delete a photo permanently? If I delete a photo from my iPhone using the
Photos app, will it be permanently deleted from everything so I never see it
again? I don't want to spend time deleting photos, only to have them stick
around in my photostream.
Thanks for any clarification.

Apple Script again

2014-12-03 Thread Jürgen Fleger
Hi Folkes,

a while ago Nic helped me by creating an Apple Script to perform a left mouse
click. It works great.

Now I tried to use the same script to perform a right click. I included the
word right to the script. The line now goes
perform command "right click mouse"

Unfortunately it doesn't work. Is anyone out there who could help me again to
correct this line?

Thanks and
all the best
Jürgen
