Hello Phil, Sorry for the delay in answering this question but I needed sighted help and my husband didn’t have time until now.
VoiceOver misreports the page number. If you want to know what it really says, you have to highlight the number field and use the New TextEdit window with selection service. I always have a short cut for this as it has been extremely useful in Pages for years.
