No, you should be able to read anything you get from ibooks either on your mac or on your iOS devices. When you open ibooks on your iOS device, at the bottom of the screen you have a few tabs. First one on the left is “my books”. Double-tap it to select it and check whether your book is there. If not, you could try and choose the rightmost tab which is “purchased” and you will be taken to a screen where at the top you have a choice of either “all” or “not on this device”. Check both of those. The book must be available to you. At least all mine can be found in either this way.
