tts bug with some voices Re: New Voices in Mavericks (was, Re: os 10.9, is it worth it?)

2013-10-29 Thread Peter Durieux
Hi listers,

Do you all remember the tts bug from some previous versions of osx and ios.
The one that misspronaunced emailaddresses and url's.
Well those are fixed in ml for the english or french voices.
Badly to see that this bug is still around with the dutch voices, are there
others that have the very annoying bug in an other language.

I'm trying to make a list and see how we can motivate apple to fix this one.
Sadly, this is reported more then a couple times, but yeah.

Re: Observation with voice on Mavericks

2013-10-29 Thread Chris H
To set up different voices for VoiceOver open the VoiceOver utility with
Vo f8 then press command 3 to switch to the speech pain of the utility.
I selected Karen as my default voice but you can also have different
voices for different things in VoiceOver. Now to change the voice for
the clock go to System Preferences, Date and Time and select the clock
tab. Check the announce time check box and there will be a button there
to customize the voice for that. Now to change the voice overall for the
system go to System Preferences, Dictation and Speech and select the
text to speech tab.

way of getting rid of the pitch changes for data detectors and search boxes.
Then she would sound perfect.

Re: Gmail Issues in Mavericks, Pretty Major, Folks

2013-10-29 Thread Krister Ekstrom
Hi,
Ok stupid question of the year: What’s this Gmail issue that everyone is so
upset about? Me, i haven’t had any problems at all except that my smtp server
of the private domain i have flatly refuses to hook up to my smtp server
despite giving the correct password, but that’s a totally different story.

Re: voice over speech on.

2013-10-29 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

1. Press fn-VO-f8 to access the VO Utility.
2. Press cmd-3 to activate the Speech pane.
3. Press tab twice.
4. Press the space bar once.

This should bring VO speech back on.

Later…

Look tell recogniser backup

2013-10-29 Thread Georgina Joyce
Hello All,

I wondered if there was anyone here familiar with backing up their look tell
library? I read that there is supposed to be a data button then a share button
to email the library contents to yourself. I don't have these buttons anywhere.

I'm using an iPhone 5 with IOS 7 and to my knowledge, recogniser is up to date.

Thanks.

Yeah, I tried it with the trackpad and with mouse keys. I succeeded with mouse
keys, simply because I don’t always track straight on the trackpad. With mouse
keys, you just hold the numpad 2 key down, and it will track straight down off
the screen, once you press the numpad 0 key to lock the mouse.

On the other hand, there are different fingers.

you’ve moved it 5 or 10%, then use VO-cmd-f5 to bring mouse focus to the
VO cursor, then do the press and drag down thing. VO should announce
“Scroll area” if it worked. It’s not extremely important where you start
the drag from, but it’s best to do so from the top half of the Trackpad so
that you have lots of drag space.

I got it turned off permanently, but it takes some intuitive action with
whatever mouse manipulation is your preferred one. I use mouse keys, because
they’re independent of VO, and I can be assured that I track straight.

Also, just thought of this, but I've not found a way to do this with Skype on

Changed that under Windows just the other day,and it vastly improved skype's

Re: Gmail Issues in Mavericks, Pretty Major, Folks

2013-10-29 Thread Teresa Cochran
Basically, you have to make your “all mail” visible on anything that uses gmail
if you want Apple Mail to play nicely with Gmail. In a lot of cases, many folks
have thousands of messages in the all mail folder, so the system can really bog
down and cause some synchronization issues. Also, you have potentially many
many messages on your local system.

Hi!
I am trying to get around the new Garageband. How ever, I am encountering a
major problem, I can not take a loop from the loop browser to my track. I can
find the browser correctly, reproduce the loops, but no way to copy or to drag
them to my current track. Please, doe’s anybody have some idea on how to do
this? or we need to report that.
Thanks!

Re: advanced Gmail Imap Settings, Was Gmail Issues in Mavericks, Pretty Major, Folks

2013-10-29 Thread Nicholas Parsons
Yes, apparently limiting the folder size of IMAP folders helps, though it would
be annoying not to be able to search through old email.

I turned on All Mail before upgrading, and once I upgraded I just opened Mail
and let it sync with gmail for several hours. I didn't try using Mail at all
during this time, and I didn't use gmail from any other device. It got stuck at
one point and I had to quit Mail and reopen, but apart from this it doesn't
seem to be having any problems. It seems to be working fine, except for the
other VoiceOver related issues in Mail. I only have around ten thousand
messages in All Mail, so that's probably one reason. I also didn't use Mail
with Mavericks for too long given other issues, so perhaps I didn't use it long
enough to have problems. I think the biggest issue is just that people had
problems trying to use gmail while it was taking time to re-format every
message to work in the new Apple Mail—gMail way.

For people wanting to know more about this, google Joe Kissell's articles on
TidBits about gmail and Apple Mail. He's the guru on this subject. His latest
article is here:

Re: a showstopper in the latest safari update

2013-10-29 Thread Nicholas Parsons
Alex,
Do you have All Mail enabled for IMAP in Gmail settings? And around how many
messages do you have in All Mail? Some people have found that limiting the size
of IMAP folders in gmail has helped the issues. It's not something I want to do
or something anyone should have to do but it might help if you have a huge
number of messages.

Re: Newest Skype with OS X Mavericks

Hi Rachel. I looked through all the Skype preferences and there’s no way of
telling Skype to not keep a chat history. I still want to know if I can
downgrade Skype. If SamNet’s Socializer were supported on the Mac, I’d just say
forget the regular Skype client and use that. Although Chrome is giving me

Re: Classic Versus Current view in Mail

2013-10-29 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

Mouse Keys without a NumPad is accomplished with the 7, 8, 9, u, i, o, j, k, l
and m keys. The 7, 8, 9 are obviously the 7, 8 and 9 keys of the NumPad. The
u, i and o keys relate to the 4, 5 and 6 keys of the NumPad. The j, k and l
keys relate to the 1, 2 and 3 keys of the NumPad. Finally, the m key is the 0
of the NumPad. Make sure to not leave Mouse Keys turned on as it can also mess
up some command key functions.

HTH.

Re: Pages and dates

2013-10-29 Thread Anne Robertson
MS Office does not work with VO. Many people say they can’t use a Mac because
there’s no acceptable alternative to MS Office that’s accessible. And now, I
have to agree that iWork is no longer up to the job. In reality, iWork no
longer exists. There are just three stand-alone applications: Pages, Numbers
and Keynote. IWork used to be integrated with Contacts and Calendars making it
very powerful for generating invoices, letters to customers and many other
things that businesses need. Pages is now just an elegant little home word
processor.

Cheers,

Anne

Pleading, begging and groveling for hhelp once again: bookshare troubles

2013-10-29 Thread Christine Grassman
Good day/night all. I have written to bookshare support about this twice, but
surprisingly for bookshare, no one has gotten back to me.

Since the reinstallation of ML on my MacBook, I cannot open bookshare titles
which I previously read. Unread files open fine, but those I had already
opened are registering as "empty html". I erased all of the files of one of
these books, then redownloaded to see if this would make a difference. It did
not.
I do have the book in Read2Go and in Voice Dream, but there does not appear to
be a way to sync it to my MacBook using iTunes. Since I need it for lesson
planning with my students and reading it with them in class, I cannot use
Read2Go; I must have it on my MacBook.
If anyone can suggest a reason for this issue and a workaround, I would
appreciate it.
Christine

Re: Pleading, begging and groveling for hhelp once again: bookshare troubles

2013-10-29 Thread Greg Aikens
Just a thought: Several of us had a similar problem a while ago. The fix was
to go into the Preferences in Safari, choose the Advanced tab, and then check
the box that says "Show Develop menu." Then, go into the Develop menu from the
menu bar and select "Disable Local File Restrictions." For whatever reason,
the default was to not allow local files to be opened in safari.

Hope this helps.

Re: Profissional piano tuner

2013-10-29 Thread Chris Blouch
I know nothing about piano tuning other than the $100 I pay to get mine
done when it starts to sound bad. I did poke around in the app store and
and found several and must say that those are some of the most expensive
iPhone apps I've ever run across. For that price I guess it would be
worth contacting them first to find out if they are accessible with
voiceover.

Thanks, Shawn! And how do I delete it? Is it just a matter of unchecking the
checkbox for the voice, restarting and checking it again? Or do I need to find
where the files are stored and delete those?
