Basically, you have to make your “all mail” visible on anything that uses gmail if you want Apple Mail to play nicely with Gmail. In a lot of cases, many folks have thousands of messages in the all mail folder, so the system can really bog down and cause some synchronization issues. Also, you have potentially many many messages on your local system.
