Accessible video editor for Mac
Hi all, I was wondering do you know an accessible video editor for Mac? I used to use Video Redo on my Windows machine, but it has not been developed for the Mac yet. It's a shame, such a great program. I don't have Ilfie 11 and I'm wondering if anyone here does. If so, have you tried it with Imovie? I have Ilife 10 and cannot get Imovie to do much. Any thoughts or suggestions? Thank you for any assistance you can provide. Mail Issue
I have created an account in Mail that has erroneus port data. I subsequently attempted to send a message using the incorrect values. and now, when I open Mail, I receive an error message advising me that the server cannot send the message using the port I selected. However, all the options I might use in order to correct the problem are dimmed. Therefore, I can neither correct nor delete the account. Does anyone have an idea how to solve this one? Hi. Oh, I miss understood your last mail. Sounds like you've turned the VO keys on by pressing VO semikolon. Try to press that again and your VO keys should be turned off. I hope that'll make your keboard to react normal again. Re: Mail Issue
Can you use Mail preferences to remove the account at all? At least, you should be allowed to just get rid of the entire thing from there. If not, you could try to remove the actual account info from your Mail preferences in your user library. I haven't tried it that way, but in theory, it should work. Take Care John D. what Voiceover bugs people want or are hoping will be fixed or squashed in Mountain Lion?
Hi all, a while ago on this list I saw someone mention that they would like so and so bug to be fixed in Mountain Lion. I would just really like to start a discussion on if there are not many enhancements to Voiceover in the next OS, then what bugs would you like fixed and hope Apple has done there job with it. I'll go 1st. For me its safari. two things for me. 1. Now and then when I go back a page with CMD left bracket Voiceover doesn't announce my list of headings or links that I have set in VO utility. 2. continuing this previous page thing, because I don't always know when the page is fully loaded when going back, I get the lovely "Voiceover Busy!" Not! This is using Lion V7.4 and Safari 5.1.7 So what are yours? I hope this will become an interesting topic because I'm interested to see what people can come up with and I'm sure there will be some good ones! So everyone, the dance floor is yours! Success in tagging on Facebook
Hey all, I know there has been some discussion on this topic, so I'd thought I'd post my steps. I was in the edit field that says something like what are you doing? It is for updating your status. I had quick nav off and I interacted with the edit field. When I was ready to tag a friend, I placed the at-sign before typing my friend's name. It told me the top choice automatically chosen, if that was correct, I only had to hit enter. Otherwise, I arrowed down the list to the friend I wanted, then press enter. Once you select your friend, your cursor is directly to the right of the name, so you need to press spacebar, or whatever punctuation you may want. I was so pleased it was so easy. Lol, I had some sighted assistance just in case anything went wrong. I was initially chicken to press enter, I was afraid a weird half written status would post. Good luck, hope this helps. Re: Success in tagging on Facebook
Was this on the main FaceBook site? I have only had success tagging on the main FB site by hitting the return after typing the at sign plus the friend's name. I have not been able to tag on the mobile site. RE: what Voiceover bugs people want or are hoping will be fixed or squashed in Mountain Lion?
Hi there! All I'm hoping they fix is startup. For me, it's still hit or miss, and VO never starts up on the desktop as it did under Snow Leopard. In the beginning, this was that hateful com.doc.apple.extra thing, and now, it's TM launch agent and a virety of other things. True, pressing command tab isn't a huge deal, but it's the principle of the thing, and sometimes, I wait for 5 minutes or so, and VO still hasn't started. Usually, pressing command tab fixes that too, but it just seems like an unnecessary step, so I'm really hoping that they finally get that sorted out in mountain lion. Re: what Voiceover bugs people want or are hoping will be fixed or squashed in Mountain Lion?
I hope they fix Quicktime when starting the screen recorder. In snow leopard when you pressed start recording you got a pop up telling you how to stop it and then pressed a second start recording button to begin. Now, I have to turn off trackpad commander, click the record button, and click on the trackpad until I hear VO speak again. It took me a few tried to even figure out that it had started to record. Not a huge deal but still helpful. Mike On Jul 2, 2012, at 1:33 PM, Ricardo Walker wrote: > Hi, > > besides the busy thing in Safari, I honestly can't thing of anything as far > as bugs go. Yep, for me, the biggest annoyance is the safari busy bug as well. Wish it behaved more like chrome, sans the table weirdness. Also, and this is far from a deal breaker, but VO at login would also rock, along with the whole of the menu bar being available to us. Have fun everyone. Re: what Voiceover bugs people want or are hoping will be fixed or squashed in Mountain Lion?
Hi. As for me, I'd like to see a few things fixed. I wouldn't however, call them bugs, more accessibility issues. I'd like to see table's in textedit and other word processors become accessible to VoiceOver. The connect as button in the network view of finder isn't accessible while using column view. I'd like to see this fixed even though it's been that way since 10.5 Leopard. Another thing that would be nice to see fixed is the iWork suite as a whole. I'd like to be able to use all 3 apps without having to jump through numerous whoops, standing on my head, and counting backwards from 1000. Finally, I'll add my voice to better performance from VoiceOver in Safari. This "Busy, busy, busy," nonsense is really annoying! Another safari thing that'd be nice to see is if VoiceOver would respond when pressing the regular arrow keys by them selves. Pressing the arrows for a sighted user scrolls the web page and until safari 5.1, this worked with VoiceOver rather nicely. Last but not least is link menus only work randomly when one presses VO shift M instead of all of the time as they should. Re: what Voiceover bugs people want or are hoping will be fixed or squashed in Mountain Lion?
I wish they would fix the Safari busy issue. and update iWork's especially pages so it would read the whole document without constantly stopping at the end of every pager. It disrupts reading. Other than that I don't really have any issues with Mac or VO. What exactly is table mode? And emptry drives? Do explain? -Original Message- From: macvisionaries@googlegroups.com [mailto:macvisionaries@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of Matthew Campbell Sent: Monday, July 02, 2012 1:43 PM To: macvisionaries@googlegroups.com Subject: Re: what Voiceover bugs people want or are hoping will be fixed or squashed in Mountain Lion?
Hi. You can use VO at the login screen. Go in to users in system preferences, unlock so you can change options, then go back to near the top of the window and find login options under all of the user accounts. Once in there, you will find a check box to use VO at the login screen. HTH, Matthew Campbell. Hi. I think "List view," is what is meant. This happens when you connect an empty drive and you try to go in to the empty drive in the finder. Could you possibly have assigned the space key some other function, either through a Commander (keyboard?) or through something in System Prefs? Re: please help with the space key
The space key working with the option key makes me wonder if it's a Keyboard Commander thing. Is it either option key, or just the left or right option key, with the space bar, to make it space? Does Command Space bring up the Spotlight search box? And, if it if a keyboard commander thing, the fix would be: • Open Vo Utilities manager • Choose Commanders in the table, and Keyboard from the tabs. • find the box that says "restore defaults," and click it. • Mark BurningHawk Baxter • AIM, Skype and Twitter: BurningHawk1969 • MSN: burninghawk1...@hotmail.com • My home page: • http://MarkBurningHawk.net/ -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. Re: please help with the space key
Oh how very intriguing! You've restored keyboard defaults, eliminated VoiceOver as the culprit... is this a MacBook, or an Imac? Have you tried unplugging and re-plugging-in the keyboard, if it's external, and a complete shut-down and reboot after all this? Is there a mouse somewhere in this system, and is it working correctly? Or, alternately, is the track pad free of glitches? • Mark BurningHawk Baxter • AIM, Skype and Twitter: BurningHawk1969 • MSN: burninghawk1...@hotmail.com • My home page: • http://MarkBurningHawk.net/ -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. Re: Success in tagging on Facebook
This is great to hear, that tagging is so easily done, on the main site at least. When I go to the mobile site on the mac, however, it seems to look a lot more like the main site. Is there something I should be doing differently? Or does m.facebook.com really display that much differently? Re: what Voiceover bugs people want or are hoping will be fixed or squashed in Mountain Lion?
You can set VO to start when you log in: Go to system preferences, users and groups button. Click the boxthat says "click the lock to make changes." Interact with the thing that says users, groups, and log in options. " So you do that, and then if you're going through the login options portion, there'll be a checkbox that says start voiceover at login. That should fix it for you. RE: what Voiceover bugs people want or are hoping will be fixed or squashed in Mountain Lion?
There's another quick fix. If you have any empty drive, take a jfile, any file, and use the right click option to copy to that drive from the desktop. Once it has even a single file on it the drive will open fine from that point on. Re: ABBYY fine reader
You can demo this one. It's called abbyyfine reader express. That's the app I mean. But you can download a demo, I think from their website, which allows you either 15 days, I think or 15 tries, whichever comes first. It only allows you to do a page at the time for this, but it gives you a good idea of how it works. Sent from my iPhone On 2 Jul 2012, at 23:20, Alex Hall wrote: > Great, thanks. Re: what Voiceover bugs people want or are hoping will be fixed or squashed in Mountain Lion?
Hmmm I remember a while back putting a list of 15 improvements. I can't remember them all now, so perhaps I have just learnt to live without them. I did report them to Apple though as bugs and feature enhancements. The VoiceOver busy is the biggest annoyance which is caused by the pathetic slow buffering system voice over uses. So I would like to see that rewritten from the ground up. There are a few random performance bugs that happen now and then which require me to switch voice over off then back on again. So overall performance could do with being improved. I would also like to know what web page I am looking at when switching between tabs, being told that is an HTML page is not exactly helpful. I would also like to navigate line by line just by pressing the down arrow or up key. VO still needs a bit of work when reporting how many HMTL elements are on a web page, some windows screen readers seem to find more tables and headings than VO, especially in the buggy rotor. I would like the ability to edit form fields in a PDF with Preview, but I believe this is coming in the next Mountain Lion release (according to Apple's website). I would appreciate MIDI event editing in GarageBand, and a huge update to iWork. There just is not enough accessible productive software on the Mac. There is more to using a Mac than just Skype and Mail surely? Not sure if that bug still exists when using the real speak voices where the pitch used to shift up and down randomly. I stopped using those voices as it became too annoying. I would also like the ability to edit voice over's dictionary. For example if you type third as in the number 3 followed by the letters r and d, you get 3rd (three road), surely this should be a third? So I think the ability to edit some of VO's assumptions would be nice, or maybe VO should grow up and become a tad more intelligent. I would like more control over how VO reads out numbers too. Maybe developers should also be given the option to name what VO calls an HTML area, as something else? For example when using adium the chat window is called an HTML area, am sure a chat window or conversation window would be more meaningful. Last but not least, I find VO a bit slow when first entering the iTunes store. The page takes a while to render. Well actually visually it does not, but VO seems to think it does. Actually come to mention it when VO says something is busy, a sighted person can still move the mouse and perform the action they require, it is just VO's buffer which is busy. I spotted another bug today too. When ordering a smart case for my iPad, VO was unable to read out the colour options. When trying to select a colour, VO simply said "space radio button" for each of the 6 colours. The work around seemed to be select a colour, go back to the top of the screen and read out the description to see if the default green had changed. Or look in the basket and hope to god you have not selected pink. I eventually performed this task via the Apple Store app on my iPhone which performed perfectly. Re: ABBYY fine reader
Hi Alex, As Kirsten said, if you visit the web site you can download a trial demo. I'll paste in the information in a post from April, which would also come up immediately if you did a search of the Mail Archive site for this list, and type into the text box something like: ABBYY Finereader trial sort:newest then press return. (Alternatively, a search like "from:Esther ABBYY trial" would also bring this up as the first result). Here's the link to the page where you can get a trial download of ABBYY Finereader Express: http://www.abbyy.com/finereader_for_mac/trial/# You can also just purchase it from the Mac App Store for $99.99 (but there's no available trial download when you use that site): http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/abbyy-finereader-express/id412310371?mt=12 The price is standard, although I was surprised to see that they dropped the Mac App Store price to $49.99 on Black Friday (the Friday after Thanksgiving) last year. It was either just for that day, or possibly the weekend, and I've never known them to do that before. By the way, using the Mail Archive for this list to search for information is a wonderful resource. You can also read the posts on that site if you just want to keep tabs on what's going on: http://www.mail-archive.com/macvisionaries%40googlegroups.com/ I'll also comment to Kirsten that I've been able to read off protected PDF forms created with Adobe Reader software with ABBYY FineReader by screen capturing the window for each page and then opening the images in ABBYY FineReader. Re: what Voiceover bugs people want or are hoping will be fixed or squashed in Mountain Lion?
Hey guys. One of the bugs I'd like them to fix is the whole pitch change thing with the Nuance voices. Even though I use the Acapela voices, sometimes I help people with their Macs and they use Samantha or other Nuance voice and it scares the crap out of me when she changes pitch. Now that we're talking about voices, I hope Assistiveware will release a patch for these voices when Mountain Lion comes out. RE: what Voiceover bugs people want or are hoping will be fixed or squashed in Mountain Lion?
So, long as we are talking about fixes one would like to see I would also like to see a little easier navigation of headings on web pages. Perhaps as a relative new user to the mac I am missing something, but I find it easier to navigate HTML headings in web pages with windows screen readers then with voice over. Again this may be my missing something major. And yes the dictionary would be nice my name especially I would like to hear it with its Spanish pronunciation again a miner issue, but one I would like to be able to correct. -Original Message- From: macvisionaries@googlegroups.com [mailto:macvisionaries@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of Chris Moore Sent: Monday, July 02, 2012 18:37 To: macvisionaries@googlegroups.com Subject: Re: what Voiceover bugs people want or are hoping will be fixed or squashed in Mountain Lion? VO still needs a bit of work when reporting how many HMTL elements are on a web page, some windows screen readers seem to find more tables and headings than VO, especially in the buggy rotor. thank you very much, as I said new user this is good very good. Never saw that in the documentation or the tutorials. I hope someone soon does a high end tutorial from beginning to end on voice over with the common apps such as safari, the email and text editor. Hi, I doubt you will see the reading by line with the down arrow. That would radically change the way VO navigates the web, and I'm not sure it would be for the better. It would be selecting text easier though. Re: what Voiceover bugs people want or are hoping will be fixed or squashed in Mountain Lion?
yeah, in my personal opinion, I think selecting text in safari could be improved. Sure you can select text bu interacting with it and using the VO enter to start the selection and do the same command to highlight it and CMD C to copy it but what if you wanted to copy more than one thing on a website. This type of selecting text doesn't seem productive to me. Time consuming is the word here I think. What about those who work or who are students like myself. It sounds silly but for copying text from websites I turn to windows because VO just doesn't do it quickly enough for me. If this was improved with the navigating by line I think it would make copying text a whole lot simpler. Enough of my rant! Hi there! I do not know if this is something you might find useful! But open VO+H+H will bring up vo commands and in the first option general there is add pronunciation in which you can put in the first field the word you want to change then in the second field write it so it sounds the way you wish it to sound! And if that is to your satisfaction then you can set other options after the second field! As a example I got mine to say Boy zone in stead of boys1! And mine does say third when I put 3rd I changed my numbers from digits to words and now 1000 says one thousand! hth Colin On 3 Jul 2012, at 00:02, Jesus Garcia wrote: > thank you very much, as I said new user this is good very good. Yes, the safari busy thing is annoying, as a work around, you can use google chrome, doesn't have that problem. Re: what Voiceover bugs people want or are hoping will be fixed or squashed in Mountain Lion?
If you don't already have this set, you can go into voiceover utility, to the commanders area, and then to the quick nav tab. And check the box that says 'enable single key webpage navigation when using quick nav." then you can use H for heading, b for button, and so on. Thats true. But chrome has problems as well. In certain instances, even more annoying than the busy. For example, not being able to jump to elements that are in tables. Hello all. While Cara is out at the NFB convention she asked me to step in and help moderate the list to deal with issues which may come up. If you send me her email address privately off list, I can send your friend and invite. There is another way to subscribe to the list by using a link with the specific email address. However right now I don't have access to that link. I can look it up and send it later. Just so everyone knows, right now I have been without real Internet access since Friday due to a tornado and thunderstorms which cost 80,000 people lose power in Fort Wayne. Luckily all I lost was my Comcast access. However it may not be restored until tomorrow or the day after. So right now I am iPhone data usage all the way. -- Raul A. Re: is a paid screenreader for the mac a option?
I agree that Apple's model is better because the issue is addressed where it should be, at the application level. A screen reader developer making scripts removes the responsibility from the app developer. Of course, some developers just are unwilling to fix the accessibility issues with their application, and in those cases, using an alternative is the answer. For example, microsoft office on the mac is not accessible, use Iwork instead. Parallels is not accessible, fusion is a great alternative. Original message: One of the double edged swords is that many apps work in the Jaws world because the developer has written jaws-specific scripts for their app. These scripts get around shortcomings in either the screen reader or the app's communication with the accessibility APIs. They are often times written by a contracted 3rd party and, by definition, are brittle. So when the next OS, app or Jaws release comes out the scripts break and have to be fixed and re-released. This cycle is the antithesis of future-proofing. Apple took a different approach where the screen reader and accessibility APIs are robust enough that this scripting shouldn't be needed but it also means that a general app developer needs to care enough to bake accessibility in. This also means they can't just make their app and farm out accessibility to some 3rd party contractor as in the Jaws model. I'm convinced that the Apple model is better long term but am concerned that it requires a general app developer to now become aware of accessibility, which doesn't always happen. The good part is that Apple's development frameworks get a lot of accessibility stuff baked in 'for free'. The downside is that custom widgets or anything special probably needs the developer to do extra accessibility work, which they often do not. So it's not really Apple's fault that Microsoft has written their entire app using their own custom widgets, but it is Microsoft's fault for not hooking their widgets into the well defined accessibility APIs. Likewise for Mozilla and many others. In the end, I want Apple's futureproof accessibility for free model to work, I'm just unsure if developers are buying into the value of providing accessible apps. The success record there has been kinda spotty. Re: is a paid screenreader for the mac a option?
There is o paid screen reader for the mac, nor is there really a need for one. I will address a few of your concerns. Not sure what you mean about browser support, I have no problems searching for fields or navigating tables on the web. Regarding the issues with Microsoft office programs, this is because microsoft refuses to follow the standards Apple has created. So, this is not the fault of the screen reader, it's the application developer's fault for not using the tools Apple has provided. Re: is a paid screenreader for the mac a option?
Agreed, we should not have to pay any more to access a device than a sightedperson does, and accessibility should not have to be developed by third parties, the company that makes the products should be responsible for making it universally accessible and that's what apple has done. Original message: First: A very helpful way to work with tables, at least on web pages, is possible if you have a full-sized keyboard, by using NumPad Commander; it is possible to use the number keys to move up, down, left or right in a table by unit, so that you can get a much better sense of how things are laid out and why it makes sense that way. Similarly, all the other things you mentioned--Office, DropBox, etc.--have work-arounds that, while not precisely the same as Windows, work just fine. Third, if you want a "paid," screen-reader, just install VMWare or use Boot Camp and install Windows and Jaws or whatever you prefer on another partition. Best of both worlds. However, what distresses me most is your conclusion that paying someone else to design a screen-reader that would work better, simply because there's money involved. Apple has worked *VERY!* hard to make VoiceOver work while *NOT* replicating the mistakes and limitations of Windows. Developing an app that does what VO does is not only reinventing fire, the wheel *and* all of basic astronomy, it's downright insulting. I, for one, will NEVER pay for a screen-reader for the Mac when VoiceOver is not only free, but stands as a beachhead in terms of universal accessibility, which is what we should be shooting for in Mac, Windows, refrigerators, Cable TV boxes, department stores, etc. Paying someone else to make sure that something works right "for the blind," is something we should be striving very hard to get *AWAY* from, not reestablish. • Mark BurningHawk Baxter • AIM, Skype and Twitter: BurningHawk1969 • MSN: burninghawk1...@hotmail.com • My home page: • http://MarkBurningHawk.net/ -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. found scanning program for the Mac
Hi guys. I wanted to tell y'all about the scanning program that I saw at the exhibits at NFB today. True, it costs $1200, but it comes with a camera sort of like the Purl camera. I had to get it going for them because the guy that knew about it wasn't at the table at the time I showed up. He came right after I got it going. It wouldn't talk at first. Who knows where it was on the screen. Like OpenBook, you don't use the screen reader while it's running. However, I had to turn their VoiceOver on, press command q and get out of their program, and then call it back up again, after I turned off their track pad. The person that was sitting there keeping watch while the developer was gone for a little bit, I guess was a Windows user. Anyway, I got the program going. The developer that came back was very knowledgeable. He told me they had a former Kurzweil engineer with them. When I did the scan, it reading was incredibly good, even in the light my husband said was glaring on the paper. I have a Purl camera I am considering selling. It doesn't have much use on it, and maybe I ought to sell OpenBook while I'm at it. However, I don't know if I can. The state gave me OpenBook, but I bought the Purl camera myself. I'll have to find out what I can do about OpenBook. Eugenia Firth gigifi...@sbcglobal.net -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. Forgot to put the name of the program I talked about. It is from Abisee at abisee.com. They had it working on a Macbook Pro. Re: iTunesmatch How to get High Quality versions?
Esther, tim, and others, I wanted to give a update to those who followed this thread. After following Esther and Tim Kilburn's directions I was able to successfully use the iTunes match service to vastly improve my listening experience. The article reference in Esther's post made this especially easy with the descriptions on how to make the smart play lists. When I did this my library of 17,125 songs was divided up and I found over 11,000 songs that would be improved by replacing them with the higher quality songs from apple. Further many of these songs were ripped either from my slightly abused cd collection, I'll never forget the day over 250 cd's hit the floor when a leg broke offf a bookcase, or from vinyl rips. It is amazing to me how many songs were matched. I took the bold step of deleting all 11,000 songs from my library and letting iTunes replace them from the cloud. this took a long time. I let the computer work on this during the night and during the day when I was at work. It still took my late 2009 Mac book over three days to complete the task. Occasionally a error message would come up and then say the network connection was reestablished. sometimes this error would start happening a lot. When this happened I would restart iTunes and go back to the smart playlist with the needed songs and select all again and press download. the process would continue again and the errors would stop for some time. I noticed that If I was playing music and reading mail and pushing the computer a bit the error messages seem to increase. These are just observations from my experience. Finally, I definitely notice a improvement in the over all quality of my listening. I don't think I've heard a skipping or damaged track since I completed the process. A few of my vinyl tracks still show up in my mixes and I actually enjoy hearing the familiar background sounds. On the other hand the crisp sound of the replaced tracks is great. To think all those tracks I originally ripped 7 or more years ago on a low bit rate Windows machine are now available so clearly improved without me taking weeks to rip them in again manually. This was certainly a great investment. I have only started to investigate the uses of Tunes match with regard to my phone. I'm sure there is potential there I have not yet begun to use or understand. I hope this information is useful to others out there. Re: podcast app
Hey guys, just to chime in, I'm using downcast as well. the Podcast app, seems clunky at best compared to downcast. Podcasts app freezes on me when I played with it and I promptly deleted it and went back to downcast and have had no problems. Now if I can just figure out how to save podcasts and possibly put them in the cloud for later since there are some music podcasts that I would like to keep around, then I'd be all good, but other than that, no complaints, loving downcast, Apple could take note from the creator of downcast. Take care guys, talk to you soon.
