Re: difference between
When I started out I used to use Aliases on the desktop but things became far too cluttered, now I use the Dock as its far easier to manipulate, you can get to software options easily and so on. As has been explained, the Finder is similar to Windows Explorer in that things are listed there and you have full control over what appears in finder windows, there are many shortcuts to manipulate the finder, some have already been mentioned such as command-shift-u for utilities, command-shift-d for desktop, command-shift-h for home and so on. There are probably a heap more you could define in the "Keyboard shortcuts" of keyboard under "System References" but if you want even more power? Well then you may consider Keyboard Maistro which allows the full defining of hotkeys into macros and so on. A full discussion of finder, dock, desktop and keyboard shortcuts can be found in one of the Take Control series, can't remember the actual title for now. Riccardo, It is quite common for types of communities to adopt nicknames or phrases for themselves that might not seem acceptable outside the community. For example the black community have adopted the N word, the gay community have adopted queer or puff in the UK, and over here there are various descriptions used by the blind community such as blinky (I guess its because some blind people blink a lot), other words include gozzy, bindy, and total. I am sure there is a hell of a lot more out there too. Re: Jailbreaking and some solutions?
I've been using a tethered jailbreak since November. My serial indicated that my 3gS had the old boot rom. In reality, it has the new one. I can't go back to 4.1 because I didn't save my SHSH blobs, thinking I wouldn't need them. So I'm stuck running a tethered 4.2.1. It was a mistake, but I accepted the risks when I upgraded. The dev team recommended that I wait to upgrade, but I wanted to experiment. At any rate, when I want to reboot, all I do is put my phone in DFU mode and launch a file. My phone starts rebooting. I've never had to reboot my phone while out. Since writing the jb guides, I have found out more information on what a tethered jb entails. I've considered making this information part of jb101. At any rate, straight from this post, http://blog.iphone-dev.org/post/1652053923/thanksgiving-with-apple in case there are some who don't feel like reading, here's the important info. Update #2 : The notion of a “tethered” jailbreak is pretty new to many people, so here’s a quick rundown on what to expect: 1 If you’re on an iPhone3G, old-bootrom iPhone3GS, or non-MC ipt2g, life is easy. redsn0w installed an untethered jailbreak and so nothing below applies. 2 “Tethered” does not mean you cannot boot at all without PC/Mac assistance. If you have not installed any tweaks that hook into important programs like SpringBoard or CommCenter, your device will actually boot. However, jailbreak programs like Cydia won’t work (and Cydia may still have a white icon). Also, certain built-in apps that had to be moved by Cydia will fail (Safari being the most noticeable example). 3 If you’ve installed MobileSubstrate tweaks that hook into SpringBoard or other important programs, your boot will actually fail (you’ll get stuck at the Apple logo). You need to use redsn0w to “Just boot tethered right now”. End of excerpt. For those of you who don't know what MobileSubstrate is, it's a dependency of Ultrasn0w, the iPhone dev team's unlocking software for iPhones. This means that you can't install Ultrasn0w without MobileSubstrate. My friend, who has a locked phone, was able to boot up just fine. I myself do not, so I cannot reboot without the assistance of my Mac. Most of you guys won't have that problem. On Jan 31, 2011, at 2:16 AM, James Malone wrote: > Thanks! Press VO+`, (VO+Accent (to the left of the Z on the English British keyboard although I'm not sure on the US keyboard where it is)). This brings up a VoiceOver dialogue to move the current window. Move the SimplyRAR windows to position 9, (VO+9, Escape). Then, move focus to the finder window you just opened, and repeat the move window step above, except move the Finder window to position 4, (VO+4, Escape). Now, in the finder window, press Command+Option+H, (Hide Others), and turn off cursor tracking, (VO+Shift+F3) and make sure your mouse is on the file or folder that you want to compress. To do this, you'll need to interact with what VoiceOver calls the "Image Browser" list). Then, if you have a multi-touch trackpad, press and hod it with one finger and swipe quickly diagonally from top left to bottom right with another finger. That should drag the file or folder you want to compress into the SimplyRAR window. Then, move to the SimplyRAR window and confirm that your file or folder is in the table. VM Fusion
Hi guys, I waswondering if there was any known issues with Fusion. Every time I open a PDF document from my documents I am prompted to select which program I should use to open the file with. I select Adobe Reader 10 and then also tick the box that says Always use this application to open this file and then I hit OK. Strangely though I always get this request even though I keep putting a tick in that box. The other major issue I have is I am unable to read PDF files in Adobe Acrobat with JAWS 12. JAWS finds no headers, or buttons or anything and I can open the PDF on a standard Windows machine and it works fine. I am totally puzzled by what the problem could be. It is an interactive form. Re: VM Fusion
Running Fusion in WIndows should not affect the way it works, other than a minimal delay between when you press keys and when that key press is transferred to Fusion. The same goes for sound. It must be processed by OS X first and then by Fusion. I've run Jaws, WIndow Eyes, and NVDA on a Fusion VM and seen no issues that weren't directly related to Windows itself. Sorry you're having trouble. Rose On Jan 31, 2011, at 10:40 AM, Chris Moore wrote: > Hi guys, > > I waswondering if there was any known issues with Fusion. Re: Dropbox accessibility
don't know what's happening there then, I'm on my own and I didn't even know that screen was there when I installed it on my system . I use it because is easier than using 4 words to describe what one will do. -Eric On Jan 31, 2011, at 2:17 AM, Ricardo Walker wrote: > Ok, > > a bit off topic but, why on earth would you refer to your self as a blink? > Maybe the word is just new to me not having heard it before the last year > but, What does it even suppose to mean? Re: Jailbreaking and some solutions?
I'm sorry to hear that rose. I thought that the serial number method was pretty safe? I do know that if the 4th and 5 th digits are between 40 and 45 it can be hit and miss, but mine are 21. I guess at the least, it's an experience. I don't like the way that stuff that changes springboard makes the phone unbootable though and whilst I don't know for sure, I'm assuming that things like 5 icon doc will change it. Also, I don't like the idea of safari not working. To be fair, your right though, I don't think my phones ever rebooted randomly or because of a crash, so perhaps I'm just being paranoid. sick and tired of Shazam!!!

iWOrk: VoiceOver Falls Short
Below are various aspects of iWork, when it comes to content browsing/viewing, where VoiceOver falls short. Pages * VoiceOver find doesn't ' always work, which requires arrowing around document and repeating find. * Going from end of page to next page, a sound indicates page turn; VoiceOver is silent and doesn't read first line of following page. Numbers * Navigating around, Voiceover will double/triple speak cell coordinates, speak word "cell" and order in which info is read isn't consistent. KeyNote * Slide show view, interact with table, VoiceOver doesn't see slide content. Doesn't matter if it's a KeyNote document or PowerPoint 2003. Actually I have managed to fix this. I uninstalled Adobe Reader 10 and downgraded to 9.1 and it works a treat. I can read the forms and fill them in too. and now that apple has implomented a ban something or other, I have to dig up the article again, they might know when you jail break as you canot restore to older OS's if you mess up or if you phone explosively breaks. Re: Jailbreaking and some solutions?
Ben, My serial indicates that my iphone was produced in week 27. There is no reason why I should have been on the new boot rom. My only guess is that my week number was really 72, as 2 is the number after 7. I don't know, but as I said, I accepted the risks when I chose to experiment. And if I don't experiment, no one else will. I'm not on a carrier supported by Apple, so I have nothing to lose either way. I've put my phone through the paces many times. So unless something happens to the hardware or the phone itself, I doubt my phone will ever truly be bricked. I can't switch to at&t because I am paying for two other phones as a favor to my family. T-mobile makes it easier to pay for three phones than at&t. I really wanted my iPhone, and I wanted to show other blind people who wished to do the same thing that jailbreaking is nothing to be scared of. I've done so, and I will continue to do so. first impressions of the new Skype
Hi, Just thought I'd come in and give my first impressions of the new Skype. for the most part, I reckon it seems to work well enough. I love that one can read the status of people in one's contact list now. Very good. Most of my custom sounds work, all but one that is; and, no matter what I try, I can't get Skype to use that sound. It's the third party hang up sound. Thing is this. How does one read the profile of a person in one's contact list? Also, how does one access the history? If, in fact, the history can be accessed at all. Sincerely, The Constantly Barefooted Ray!!! Now A Very Proud and very happy Mac user!!! Re: iWOrk: VoiceOver Falls Short
You know, I'm not exactly the biggest apple fan on here, but if those are all the bugs that are present in iWork, I have to say thats pretty impressive. I can't right now, but I'm sure that if I had time, I could come up with many more bugs that one could find using a windows screenreader and office. I'm all for talking about a products weeknesses, but it seems like your podcast exists purely to expose the bad points about voiceover, despite its name. Re: first impressions of the new Skype
Ray: To read someone's profile, you perform the following steps. Interact with the table that shows your contacts. Then, arrow to the contact you want. While still interacting with the table, bring up the context menu for the contact you're interested in with VO-Shift-M. Then, arrow to the item that says "view profile". I think that's what it says, anyway. Hope that helps. I'm still trying to figure out how to turn on/off my webcam while within a call. I used to be able to do it in the current non-beta version of skype, but havne't found any way to do this from the beta. Take care. -John On Jan 31, 2011, at 2:11 PM, Ray Foret Jr wrote: > Hi, > > Just thought I'd come in and give my first impressions of the new Skype. for > the most part, I reckon it seems to work well enough. Re: Jailbreaking and some solutions?
I don't have any experience with jailbreaking myself. If I understand that article though, the base band check only effects people who unlock their iPhone. This is an additional process to enable the phone on other carriers. People who simply jailbreak don't need to be concerned with this. Re: band limit was Jailbreaking and some solutions?
Flashing the baseband only needs to occur in some instances. 3gS's on basebands 5.14.04 and 5.15.04 must be flashed at this current time. Anything else is fine, and if you have a different baseband, there are steps you can take to preserve it when you upgrade so you can do a standard restore if need be in future. Re: Dropbox accessibility
You'll find the option to create a link to a file perfectly accessible, firstly you need to put the file into your Dropbox public folder. Select the file you wish to create a link to in the finder and go into the context menu with vo-shift-m, from the options select "Dropbox" and from here select "Copy public link", now the link to the file is copied to your clipboard and you can paste it where you want it, email, word processing document etc. On 01/02/2011, at 10:01 AM, Teresa Cochran wrote: > I had to get my sighted husband's assistance with the setup window and > logging in. Hi all, I was reading the post about Numbers and Anne had eluded to changing the options in VO utilities so VO won't read the cells in tripplicate. How do you do this? What do you change in Utilities? I'd love to know how to fix this as I have a podcast that demos VO behaving the exact same way with Numbers. Thank you for any assistance you can provide. Help with Sharing files and folders using mac os 10 server
Hello listers. I'm running a mac mini server that has a bunch of various drives connected to it. I've turned the file sharing service on, went in to the finder and checked the "shared folder" check box on the drives I want to share, and set the sharing permissions. However, after I connect and log in to the server and get the list of mountable volumes, my drives are not listed in the table. Is there something I'm doing wrong? Re: Help with Sharing files and folders using mac os 10 server
Hi Matthew, Go to server admin in your applications/server folder, log in to your server's ip or dns hostname and go to the afp service in the list under your server's name. When inside, go to the sharing tab, vo right until you hear volumes, check it, vo right a few more times and you will be in the list of volumes which are available. If your volumes which were set via finder i suppose are not there, vo right more until you have the add button and select your drives. Also, in the sharing options, check or uncheck SMB if you are trying to access your drives from a windows workstation. The AFP service for sharing is automatically set so there is no qualm there. Let me know if that works. Usually setting permissions within finder doesn't use the ACLs inherent to mac os server and uses posix instead and might not actually provide best access control for your posix groups. Also, make sure to have DNS configured properly by looking into the DNS service under the server name, check if its running, and if there are errors, make sure you have configured proper dns resolutions even if you are on a local network. I doubt this is the case as you can authenticate to your server but its a safe bet to check DNS is properly configured. Pages: Changing Styles of Paragraph
With a pages document, I tried changing a paragraph style , from body to heading 1. I went about this two different ways, via inspector and styles drawer. Unfortunately, seems that both methods did not change paragraph style. I made a few bullets and links, where VoiceOver didn't announce the presence of bullets or links when arrowing up/down. When reviewing line, which contains link by word, VoiceOver skipped over a word in link. Tips, ideas and/or suggestions are welcome. I don't have a sharing tab under the afp option. All the tabs [that actually identify as buttons for some reason] I have are as follows. Info, logs, graphs, network, share points, and advanced. I've highlighted my server in the list but instead of a share point button there is a file sharing button. Under the file sharing button there are still the permissions tab and the quotta tab. VO Safari Flaw
This is what I have just sent to Apple, and I would be interested if anyone else has experienced this or has any knowledge of why Safari and VO do this: Hi there, I have been doing some comparisons of using screen readers on a major supermarket in the UK. Tesco are huge in the UK and Europe and have a wonderful website which enables customers to order products and have them delivered. I used to think Safari and VO acted strangely at times when using this site as there seemed to be more links or headings within the web page when tabbing around or navigating via the keyboards shortcuts (VO + command + H for example) than the rota would announce. I would then double check that the rota was giving the correct information by asking VO to tell me the summary of the web page statistics. When using JAWS and System Access I noticed that those screen readers informed me that there was twice as many headers and links on the web page than VO would lead you to believe. I then opened up the HTML source code and double checked for myself and indeed this was correct. I then started to notice this on other websites. Why does VO not report to the rota of every header and link? Yet, if you tab or go through the web page by header and link etc you come across all links and headers. Are you aware of this bug? I think this is a major serious flaw on Apple's part as it provides misleading information and could potentially be hiding content the viewer may think is important. I also wonder if the find feature within VO also misses this information too. I hope Apple investigate and fix this serious flaw. I'm in that section right now as i type and i have share points tab with the permissions and quota tabs. The highlight is automatic when you are in the server/s table and it should expand to show your available services such as afp dns or open directory if you've enabled it. Either you tab right when the server is highlited or when afp is highlighted. In both instances, you should go to either volume or share point tab then vo right to see the list of abailable volumes and share points. Another way yet to get your share point on is to go to server preferences and go to afp, and you should have also the share points tab from which to add a volume or folder. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. Copied text to Dropbox Hello Dropbox team. I'd like to report a problem that I would class as a bug report my self. This has to do with the lack of accessibility within the Dropbox for mac application. When I launch the Dropbox app, I get no feedback from the built in screen reading software on the mac. VoiceOver is the free screen reading solution built in to every mac and Apple's developer documentation makes reference on how an application can be made to be accessible while using VoiceOver. Hi. It's really weird. If I check the share points checkbox the volumes check box un checks it's self and in the list of share points my volumes are there but the button that toggles sharing on and off is greyed out. You're almost there :) If i dont reply its because i have to start my day and do a few things. Let me know and i will rpely when i get back. For those of you who don't know what MobileSubstrate is, it's a dependency of Ultrasn0w, the iPh
