skype 5 pretty nice though
Hi list, I have just finished looking at the alerts customisations and wondered if anyone knew if growl notifications broke when receiving messages etc. I'm a bit confused about the interface when it comes to someone texting so i placed all the alerts so i know where to head when i receive something. And its always better to choose when to reply to a dialogue as before skype used to force a new contact's message on oneself while typing to someone else for example. Re: [Bulk] skype 5 pretty nice though
the thing I have found is that none of the alerts work. contacts signing in, or out, no alerts play sounds or speak, with the exception of receiving calls. Some custom sounds witch are correctly formatted will not play either. As for conference calling, I understand they are working on this and will have a more accessible fix for the next release, which, as I gather it, will be the actual public version of the 5.0 or maybe even 5.1 release. I didn't see any 5.1 but the latest build I saw for this version was 5.0.0.6378 Sincerely, The Constantly Barefooted Ray!!! Now A Very Proud and very happy Mac user!!! Hi! Yep, I noticed the same thing and have reported it, as well as other things since the way you conference isn't exactly ideal for VoiceOVer apparently. Re: [Bulk] skype 5 pretty nice though
I have checked the alerts and all of them seem to work. A lot of them are disabled by default and the customizability takes a while to fit everyone's needs. The alert method at the bottom of the alert screen for each alert type chosen in the pop ups has two options, built-in and growl. It's definitely better to have growl alerts with the speech setting on, but i can't have messages read by grolw at this point, probably due to some switch in the skype updated api. The settings are getting there but not to the point of satisfaction as of yet. Best regards. Re: [Bulk] skype 5 pretty nice though
Hi! Most of them speak, although my online sounds don't seem to work either. I prefer to have Skype handle the speech, as Growl speaks on top of alerts that are already speaking which gets very loud. Secondly, the Outgoing call alert does not work properly with speech, at least not the built-in method. But the same parameter seems to work in others. See, it does show as "contact" when you use "@", but it just doesn't retrieve the name in that particular alert for that reason even though the same parameter is used. skype conversations
Just to continue on this skype thread, I was wondering if anyone found an efficient way for switching from conversation to conversation and refreshing the chat window as dynamically as possible? Re: skype conversations
The way I did it was VO+shift+home to get to the toolbar, then VO+down and you can interact with the source list. If you have multiple conversations open you can flip through them with command+option and left or right arrows. To get to the HTML area quickly, I just type any key in order to make VO jump to the text field. and then I delete it again, but from there you can do VO+left arrow twice and you can interact with the HTML area. This is the fastest method I've come up with so far. -- Ruud -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. Typing a partial skype name in that edit box and pressing down arrow only beeps and nothing happens allthough i know i got a skype name that coresponds to what i try to type. If i put the cursor on the "add people" button and start typing only the beep is heard and no text gets typed in and no menu appears while pressing down an arrow key. Re: iMac VS Mac Mini
If you have a monitor, go for the Mini unless you have a real need for the fastest processor possible and need a lot of drive space on the machine. The iMac offers more options in terms of processing power and hard drive space. Of course you do get the monitor included. My advice is this: 1. Determine what you need. In other words, what are you going to use the machine for and plan this out over at least three years as a minimum. UNless your one of those folks who upgrade frequently, you want to get a machine that will grow with you and I tend to keep machines forever, but if I consider upgrading, it usually is on a three to five year cycle depending on what my family needs. :) Yeah, I'm really nice, I give them the well tested machines. :) 2. Price out more than one option. For example, if you are leaning toward a MIni, but you want more drive space and ram, do the math and see if it would make more sense to go with an iMac versus a Mini. Of course others will have different opinions, but hope this helps. Re: iMac VS Mac Mini
Cheree Heppe here: I'm trying to decide the same thing. If you require a big screen, then you have to most likely use the IMac. If you don't, then, for the price of an IMac, you could buy the Mac Mini, use any old monitor, but the Mini doesn't require a monitor to operate, and use the remainder of that money that would have gone for the IMac to get a MacBook Air. This would give you both a desktop, stay at home model and a laptop mode. Re: [Bulk] skype 5 pretty nice though
Hi! Also, a lot of alerts particularly chat alerts, do not work in active windows. THis means, if you switch to another conversation (away from the chat with me), you will get the chat sound when I send you something. If you, however, switch back to me and stay in my window after you have replied, you will get no notification. This is how it currently seems to work, though I am sure everyone knows by now. This can be handy, sure, but it'd be nice if there was an option for this assuming it is intentional. Skype 5 beta and conference calling - this is what i've found so far
Ok, i have made some progress with adding people to skype conferences. As mentioned before, there are 2 methods of doing it. I'll begin by describing the way that works: In the chat box type the following, without quotes: "/add username", where username is changed to the persons skype name whom you'd like to add. Be very, very careful with this version of the adding though, because it can, as it looks, add anyone from anywhere regardless if they're in your contacts list or not. I don't know if it actually tries to place a call to the person in question, but i don't doubt that it actually does. Second method: Press the "add people" button or hit cmd+shift+a. You will be kicked into an edit box. Type a partial name and wait for one second aprox. Vo will announce "Skype has new window". With the window chooser, find a window named "new". Here you'll find a list of the usernames Skype has found coresponding to your search. Find the username you want to add and ... what? what do you do then? Pressing return only makes the text go away. Pressing escape cancels the menu as would be expected, trying to copy the text yealds a beep and nothing happens, right clicking does nothing, pressing vo+shift+space bar achieves nothing, routing the mouse cursor to the menu text and clicking (vo+shift+space) only leaves the text in the menu visible and then nothing happens, hitting the return key, which would be the logical thing to do, causes the text to disappear and that's all, no people added, nada, nothing, nichts. I don't know anything more to try now, i'm out of ideas. The only thing i can think about is dragging and droping, but leaving the menu window and going to the skype window makes the edit box for adding people go away and so there's nowhere to drop what i've begun dragging. This is way beyond my little understanding. /Krister -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. bootcamp and vmware.
Hi all. I have set up a bootcamp with my openbook, can I use that windows in vmware. I know that a sighted person can do that, I have tried it once, at that time everything broke down because of jaws and a screendriver. If anyone has got it to work, I would like to hear from you, if it is too offtopic, then please mail me off list. Re: some newbie mac questions
One idea if it is recipes that you are usually interested in selecting, there are a few recipe keeper programs out there that can grab a recipe from a web site and put it into their database. I have not personally used any of these, but my wife (who is fully sighted) loves "Yummy Soup". tidbits.com did a review of recipe programs about a year ago, though of course they wer not analyzing them for accessability. Re: iMac VS Mac Mini
Hello there. It depends on what yo are trying to accomplish with it. The Mac mini has a lower end processor with limited ram and hard disk space. You also need to have a monitor connected to it wether you are using it or not. You also have to provide your own keyboard and pointing device. The Imac is more powerful and you have choices on processing speed, ram etc. Nektarios. questions about garage band, scanning, skype, fusion and apps
Hello, It seems my last post sort of drowned in another discussion, so I'll give it another go. I've found a couple more questions too, heh. First I'd like to know if people who use the new garage band encounter any problems when it comes to accessibility. Are there things that don't work yet? For example, is the problem with not being able to select a portion of a track now solved? My second question involves scanning. I read some stuff about vuscan and readiris ... Since ReadIris 12 seems to be inaccessible, what would be my best option for OCR and the like? Next one, i read there were some problems concerning the new skype version unable to connect or so? Is that fixed in ther 5.0 beta ? If so, where can this beta be found? We're nearing the end. I have been reading up on Fusion and vmware workstation and read that a virtual machine made in workstation can be used in Fusion. Could someone give me their thoughts on this? I've heard sometimes it ain't all good, but according to vmware's knowledge base it shouldn't be an issue. Also, if i use 4 gigs of ram with an XP machine, what would be the best idea for allocation to xp? Last one: for those who are still reading, you might want to cover your ears in desperation: extreme newbie alert. Is there a place where i can find a long list of accessible applications? I saw apple's application support page, but is that all there is? I hope not ! :D Thanks for any help, Florian -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. Re: is aby find reader accessible when reading books or magazines?Hi all:
Hi Chenelle: I just completed a free 15 day trial of Abbyy Fine Reader Express. I'll try to answer your questions: Abbyy worked/performed fairly well, though some odd printing (coloring within a book) gave it a fight. The process, as I understand it is a little more complicated than using something like Krzweil or Openbook in that as far as I know you have to use something like Image capture to take the scan, and then open that with Abbyy, which again, performed OCR fairly well. My problem was that Image Capture does a double scan, since it first does an "overview", and then a regular scan. So, books would seemingly take a lot more time to do. At least as far as I know. As far as your scanner goes: Epsons tend to work well with the Mac. The Canon portable might work, if you procure the drivers and install them. If you don't have your starter disk and want to try this, you can get the drivers at Driver Collection.com. I got the Canon mp160 to work, but haven't tried the little Lida20. Hope this helps. Re: some newbie mac questions - item chooser
Hi Tim, I'm not sure how to test this without sighted assistance, but if it's true, it's a bug. on the other hand it makes a bit of sense. I think I remember reading somewhere in this thread that Marlena had 800 contacts and then somewhere else that the IC was only showing 40 items or some such. So then it's pretty clear that some of the contacts are getting into the IC, but not all. NOt by a long shot. So there in lies our problem most probably. I'll cc this to apple accessibility and see what they say. Headless Mac Minis [Was: Re: iMac VS Mac Mini]
I thought the issue where a Mac Mini required a monitor in order to function properly only applied to the 2009 Mac Minis, aka "Macmini3,1." I recently purchased a mid-2010 Mac Mini aka "Macmini4,1" and have no problems running it headless. I also have an older 2007-2008 Mini, aka "Macmini2,1" and it runs headless without issue. Re: Headless Mac Minis [Was: Re: iMac VS Mac Mini]
Hello, I have a macmini3,1 and when first setting it up. I did need a monitor. Although, sometimes i do have it off the monitor and it still works for me. What i'm having issues with is hooking it up to my 50 inch plazma tv. Call me crazy or whatever you want but i had it set up with the older mac mini 2007 and it worked. With the recent macmini3,1. Just haven't been able to. Not sure if i have the right connection or what. Hi all! I have the same thing in mine! when I open item chooser only a few of my contacts show up, and I also found it depends on where I was in the address book which ones showed up for example if I was on Alison and did item chooser just names from her to say the letter j showed up then if I went to Tony then did item chooser then names from say Mike to Wendy showed up! I've not got many names so there might be a different out come for others who have more like 800 or so :] They might just get all names starting with the letter c :] hth Colin On 5 Nov 2010, at 14:23, erik burggraaf wrote: > Hi Tim, I'm not sure how to test this without sighted assistance, but if > it's true, it's a bug. > on the other hand it makes a bit of sense. Hi! No, Mark, it doesn't matter. It's because of active windows, at least for the chats which is pretty easy to discover when you switch conversations. Re: some newbie mac questions - item chooser
Hi Marlaina. I thought of a tip for you. Not to confuse you further, but the function keys can act in two different ways. By default, they perform system functions, such as changing the volume or muting. Watch out for that last one. If you hit F10 it will mute your sound. Just hit it again to unmute if that happens. In the other way, the function keys just act like standard f1-f12 keys, as they would on a PC. This means you won't have to hold down the FN key every time you want to perform a VoiceOver command, for example Vo-shift-f3. You have enough to deal with without hitting FN. To do this: 1. Go to your System Preferences by hitting Vo-M, going to the Apple menu, and selecting it from there. 2. Go to the preference panes scroll area. Interact with it, and select Keyboard. Select the general tab. 3. Now move over to the Use all F1, F2, etc. keys as standard function keys check box and check it. Close with command-q and enjoy. Maybe you have done this already, but it just occurred to me to tell you. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. Emacs and Terminal questions
Ok let's get things going with some weird and perhaps some not so weird questions. Has anyone gotten trackpad gestures to work with Emacs? I don't mean some new kind of Mac, I mean the text environment for Unix-like systems, especially GNU/Linux. I know they have mouse bindings, and I can use gestures to read lines, but not much more. I know not to really expect too much, as it doesn't use the standard controls, but I just wondered. Also, applications like Emacs clear the screen, and use the full screen to work in. In Linux this doesn't matter, the top and bottom of screen commands work as expected. In the Mac terminal however, it just acts like a long scrolling list, which for some things really rules, but I'd also like to navigate as on a standard screen, so the top of screen command actually takes me to the top of the displayed screen, not the top of the scroll area. Does that make sense? By the way, I will give a tip: turn on the "Use option key as meta" option in terminal preferences, then Emacs keybindings will work. I'd appreciate any other hot terminal tips anyone has, as I come from Linux, so feel right at home, or at least in familiar enough surroundings. I got MacPorts working, a very nice system. I feel particularly intrigued by a thought from an Apple engineer I read somewhere. He said: "If you go looking for something Unix and do not find it, then we have failed. Growl
So people told me to get Growl, a message notification system. I definitely see the advantage. I set it to use the speech style, and customized my speech preferences. I installed Growlmail. It reads the alerts, but one problem: it reads them all at once! I heard like ten message alerts all read at the same time over top of each other. It sounded, for lack of a better word, trippy. Do I have to change a setting to get it to read them one after another? Do I have to use another style? Can I not use Growl? Re: Growl
Hello Austin This is due to the way the style currently handles speech. Previously, it did not obey speech preferences either. I am working on a fix, however, for the issue with multiple notifications being spoken on top of each other. Re: Skype 5 beta and conference calling - this is what i've found so far
Nope, as i said in my earlier message, (if memory serves me right:-)), copying and pasting won't work, it only yealds a beep, however, i found a solution to the problem. When in a conference press the "add people" button or hit command+shift+a, this pops up an edit box. Type a name or parts of a name and wait a second or so. Voiceover will say "skype has new window". Ignore that, it's a list of available names matching your search, but you can't do anything with it. Now hit your down arrow once. Vo will beep and announce the partial name you just typed. I don't know why you have to do this, but at least in my case, if i didn't do it, it didn't work. Maybe it goes to the end of the partially typed word. Now, hit return and press the down arrow once. This won't give any feedback but it actually selects the name from the list i spoke of earlier. Now hit return and the person you wanted should be added. What we would need is for Voiceover to give feedback as we move in the list of available names, which it doesn't do at this current time. What would also be great is if we could add a caller that rings in to an existing conference, a thing i haven't seen in this version. Now i just wonder if the steps i outlined above can be applied during an actual call, anyone who knows? Hope this helps. /Krister 5 nov 2010 kl. 21.24 skrev Sarah Alawami: > If it is a table then and hitting enter causes the text he sees to go away > then maybe copying that row could be a work around. Hi Andy, If you clicked on the link to Erik's tutorial for Marlaina (on using item chooser menu) in Dropbox from mail, and the file is already playing in a plug-in for your Safari browser, you can press Command+L and then press Return. This is a general Mac shortcut (not specific to VoiceOver). To force downloading of a linked mp3 music file or a PDF that is in Safari, press Option+Return for a link within a Safari. Pressing Option+Return will cause a highlighted, linked file to download to your default downloads location. By definition, the VoiceOver cursor highlights links when they have focus, so if you've navigated to a link in a Safari web page the Option+Return combination will cause that file to download instead of play (or, in the case of a PDF file, be displayed) in your web browser. Re: Growl
Hi! No, not at all. :) Growl is open Source software, which means everyone can contribute. The source itself actually provides some excellent Read Me documents to introduce you to how Growl works with registering itself for applications, how to utilize the various programming languages with Growl, etc. Since, at this time at least, no one is making extensive development modifications to the Speech display style I thought I would give it a go. Of course, I'd be happy if someone else decided to take up that code as I don't have the required amount of time at the moment to do more than glance at it. Re: Skype 5 beta and conference calling - this is what i've found so far
Hi! Well, part of me wonders if clicking it physically with the mouse will work, or perhaps drag and drop? Part of me was actually wondering if you join someone who is calling into the current call by dragging the conversation, then dropping it onto the current call perhaps. Yeah, I know it's one hell of a stretch, but it was bouncing around in my tired brain this morning. I'm probably wrong, but it seems odd this feature would be left out again regardless of it being a beta. The point of a beta is, after all, to test features and improve them. Or is it? I'm not Skype. And, if I even had part of Skype's revenue, I'd buy that $17000 Mac Pro I want just to have it. Re: quick time player
for MusicFile in *.mp3 ; do open -w -a quicktime$MusicFile done OK, the above is a quick bash shell loop that goes through every mp3 file in the current directory one at a time and sends it to the open-w -a The open command is quite impressive, it can open web pages or text files or code samples. You can force applications with either the -a or -b (application and bundle) I believe the bundle id for quicktime would be com.apple.quicktime so in the above example, replacing "-a quicktime" with "-b com.apple.quicktime" should perform the same function. The -w option above tells open to prevent additional calls to open until the quicktime applcation exits. It might (I say might) be possible to send mp3 directly to /dev/audio, I am fairly sure I have done this on some unix variant n that case... cat *.mp3 > /dev/audio would do the trick. An apparently accessible alternative to flash.
Hi all, I've stumbled across something that might just be very useful indeed. This is a safari extension called click to flash. Apparently it started out as a way to replace any flash content with a placeholder element. All flash would be disabled unless you click on this to enable selected content. Anyway, at some point they developed a feature that replaces flash videos with an html5 alternative whenever possible. For example, this works on pages that contain embedded videos from sites like youtube and vimeo. I've tried this on a few sites, and it is totally accessible. Where the video would be, you instead get an element that Voiceover identifies as clickable. Press VO space, and you get a video toolbar. Interact with it to play, pause, mute etc. It's very nice. Here is the link to the extension. http://hoyois.github.com/safariextensions/clicktoflash/ Hope someone finds this useful. YoruFukurou question
I started using this twitter client just for something different, and I think I like it not least because it seems to be actively developed unlike syrinx, but I'm noticing that if I hit l to open the link in the tweet it is sometimes opening a link in another tweet almost like another tweet is highlighted. I have all the cursors set to follow each other and was wondering if anyone else had experienced this? Thanks in advance for any help. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. Re: An apparently accessible alternative to flash.
OO thanks for that will give it a try. I already see a video element controler in youtube and toher sites but don't use it much. Re: OT Going to seriously cry now
Hi May, Hard drives may crash, but the info can be retrieved even though the drive has crashed. They do have data recovery services. Isaac - Original Message - From: "May McDonald" To: Cc: ; Sent: Friday, November 05, 2010 6:36 PM Subject: OT Going to seriously cry now Ok, I'm not at home with the list of people that have already responded to me regarding my server. Bad news, it's going to take a lot longer than I thought to get it back up and not because it's not working. My lovely hard drive that had all the audio books decided it didn't want to share it's information with it's new home and blew up!!! I just lost thousands of audio books that took me a year to collect. The movies and tv shows made it because they were on a different drive, but I'm not hapy about losing the books. I do plan on getting them all back after I'm done bashing my head against a wall and ten beating my computer into dust! -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. Can't be recovered. It's completely dead. Lots of smoke and stuff. No one can read it, even experts. Re: YoruFukurou question
Hi! Use up and down arrow instead of VO-up and down. That ensures it works with all commands. Re: An apparently accessible alternative to flash.
Hi! Yep, it works very well. I've been using this for some time now. You can even add sites to a so-called "Whitelist" which enables a site to always load flash, but only those listed. It's very nice, as it helps load a site a lot faster and actually decreases a lot of CPU usage.
