ok? I have never found an app that doesn't do that. unless you are talking the right mouse button context menus. there is actually a command for that in the help somewhere. normally, I have the mouse cursor set to focus on voiceover, so where-ever voiceover speaks, the mouse will be, then its easy to access this menu. haven't tried with a trackpad yet. -Eric On Oct 26, 2010, at 1:44 AM, Ray Foret Jr wrote: > Uh, that does not work with the Drop Box App. > > I'm talking here about menues which cannot be found in the regular way you > describe. NO Eric, I know about VO+shift+m, if that's what you mean. Again, I say, that's not the kind of access issue I'm talking about here. These are very special cases where menues will appear on the screen but not be visible to Voice Over unless you physically move the mouse over to that menu. I am not talking here about track pad commander either. I can get to the menues I want, but, when it comes to opening the preferences menu, forget it. Sincerely, The Constantly Barefooted Ray!!! Re: getting preferences menus to open after finding them with mouse
ray, ok, those menus I never seem to find (or get). I have a mouse here, but because I am totally blind (NLP), moving it around the screen would be useless for me. I have run into a few websites that do something like that. but because I can still interact with the website, I don't immediately notice the new "window" until after I am done. -Eric On Oct 26, 2010, at 3:27 AM, Ray Foret Jr wrote: > NO Eric, > > I know about VO+shift+m, if that's what you mean. RE: Selecting the location of iphone firmware when restoring
Hi, First, turn on the shortcut for mouse keys. This way, you'll be able to turn mouse keys on and off by pressing option 5 times. Now, go into iTunes and route the mouse to the VO cursor. Turn the mouse keys on, hold option and press numpad 5 to click. Re: My first mac. Questions.
Nektarios, Make certain that trackpad commander is turned on. This can be accomplished in VO utility or by pressing control-option while rotating two fingers on the trackpad clockwise. rackpad commander can be disabled by pressing the vo keys and rotating counter clockwise. If you're like me and rest your palms on the trackpad while typing you may want to do this so as to avoid unintended focus changes. Best regards. I am only guessing but if it is a re writing disc, if you put together the content you want to burn to that disc, try changing the import setting to show cd then put that disc in and see if it would let you burn to it! Just in case you'll find import settings in general of Itunes prefs! h i w Colin On 26 Oct 2010, at 13:43, Donna Goodin wrote: > Hi all, > > I want to erase a CD I made earlier and burn new content to that CD. Skype troubles
Hello, I just downloaded skype for the Mac. I typed in my username and password and hit return. Nothing happens for a long time, then a message pops up saying something like Skype couldn't connect. Please check your network settings. Does anyone know what might be wrong? I use skype on my iPhone 4 with no problems. It's on the same wifi network as my Mac. iTunes and bookmarking
Hey folks, I have a question. Have any of you had a case where you download a podcast or transfer an audiobook to your iOS device, and when listening to that item, you find yourself X number of minutes into the file or even at the end of the file? In this case, you have taken no action such as listening to the podcast or book in iTUnes first. If you have experienced this please let me know. I am not asking for assistance or for explanations, I am only researching a problem that I have experienced. I believe there is a possible bug in iTUnes, but this is so random that I cannot reproduce it at will. I know of at least two other people who have experienced this and have no explanation or way to reproduce the problem. Erase rewritable CDs with Disk Utility [was Re: erasing and burning content to CDs]
Hi Donna, Erase your CD contents with Disk Utility, after you've inserted the rewritable CD or DVD. 1. Launch Disk Utility. From Finder, press Command-Shift-U to go to your utilities folder, type "d i s" to navigate to Disk Utility, and press Command-Down arrow to launch it. 2. Select your CD in the application side bar. Since the name of the CD will be specific to your example, I'll just suggest that you use item chooser menu (VO-I) and type in "HD", then press return to go to "Macintosh HD" and VO-Down Arrow twice, since the name of your DVD/CD drive will show up below your hard drive, and your CD will show up below that. 3. Press the "Erase" tab. (Use item chooser menu to move to the "Erase" tab and VO-Space to select it.) 4. Press the "Erase" button on the "Erase" tab. You can first reset the radio button for the default option of a quick erase to a complete erase, if you prefer. This depends on the quality of your media and the number of times you've reused the CD. 5. Eject the CD (Command-E) when done. 6. Quit Disk Utility (Command-Q) if you're burning audio contents with iTunes. (You can burn to CD or DVD with disk utility, too. But I used to find that even when I was burning data discs of movies that these burned more than twice as fast in iTunes. So even if I wasn't using iTunes to play these instructional movies, I'd add their entries to iTunes and burn the CD or DVD from there.) HTH. Quick mod note re: Re: way ot: chinese braille
Greetings, I kept hoping this topic would run it's course without need to compose a mod post. I even blew off a private note asking that I make it stop, but in the words of Paul Harvey: "self government won't work without self discipline ", so here's where I have to ask that we limit discussion to things directly related to MacOS and/or IOS which sadly does not include the plight of blind people in other nations or how wonderful our professions are. Re: network traffic software
Hi, I'd check network speed using an app from my iPod Touch, but you can try using the links in an old post: http://www.mail-archive.com/macvisionaries%40googlegroups.com/msg02296.html Or you might try googling for a mobile speed test site. Here's one that I found: http://www.mobilespeedtest.com/ Press the link (VO-Space) to run speed test. Then on the results page use item chooser menu to look for "Your speed" and VO-right arrow to read off the results. You can re-run this with a 2MB test link (find it with item chooser). This is a quick answer -- I rather suspect these aren't the most accurate sources for results. The speed tests I ran from sources in the link given in my archived post are better: http://www.dslreports.com/speedtest?java=1 However, since you should pick a gateway geographically close to you, and the detailed instructions are different for each selection, there's no general instructions I can give. The recommendation to look for a mobile speedtest site or to google for one that uses java is based on the fact that most sites use flash for their results, which is not accessible. Some of the java based speedtest apps allow you to choose whether to display your results as a graphic or as text, and you should obviously choose the text view. If you have an iPhone, iPod Touch, or iPad, up until the September 24 version 2 update I would have recommended the free Speednet.net Mobile Speedtest from Ookla, which is one of the most commonly used speedtest sites (but which uses flash). I still use the old version of this app, but the new release is not accessible. For another accessible iPhone speedtest app, try the free Speedtest app by Xtreme Labs Inc. HTH. Maybe someone else can suggest a better solution. There may also be some downloadable software that works better, and you can also check for speedtest widgets. Re: network traffic software
I think the easier test here is to attach your computer via wire instead of wireless and test the throughput. See if it feels faster. Also, instead of fighting with download tests download a big file and see how it goes. Something like ftp://ftp.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/v2.6/linux-2.6.18.2.tar.gz This is about 70 megabytes and gives a good test assuming you're close to kernel.org or have your window size and scaling enabled. A good comparison would be to download the file with a wire then use the WiFi and download the same file. See if the numbers are comparable. As mentioned speed tests are a good way to go as well but finding a good one that is representative of your carrier can be a challenge. Garageband and Logic...
Hi guys... Is it possible to use GarageBand and Logic in combination? I mean, I'd like to use GB to build up the songs and then do more kinda pro editing in Logic, for example use Superior 2 instead of the Jamp Pack-drums and so on. I've heard that it should be possible to load GB-project in Logic, and then take it from there. Any experience out there? AppleScript for Jumping to specific time in iTunes [was Re: Playback Counter in Itunes?]
Hi Teresa and Kevin, There is a better solution and a way to jump to a specific time for any selected track in iTunes (video as well as audio). Go to Tim Kilburn's VoiceOver Downloads page web site and get the "RestartAt" AppleScript: http://homepage.mac.com/kilburns/voiceover/downloads.html The download comes with full instructions for use. Basically, AppleScripts allow you to design commands that function just like the commands from your menu bar. You copy the AppleScript into a Library/ iTunes/Scripts folder in your home directory. (The first time you use AppleScripts you'll have to create the Scripts folder). Then, any AppleScripts in this folder show up under a separate AppleScripts menu on your iTunes menu bar. You use these scripted commands the same way you do any other menu bar commands: highlight a track that you are playing in the songs table, then navigate to the AppleScript menu on iTunes menu bar (I use Control+F2 and left arrow past the "Help" menu to get there). Arrow down to the "RestartAt" menu option and press return. A dialog box will appear giving the (current) default position to start playback. You can type in any other time in to the text box and press return, and your playback will start from that position. If you simply press return, playback resumes at the current position. I'll just note that anyone interested in this script should download it before all Mac homepages go away on November 8, 2010. I'm not sure whether Tim plans to move this page with the various VoiceOver related items that were assembled in the early days of this list. You can also assign a shortcut key combination to any AppleScript. I'm a bit pressed for time, so if you want to read more details about using the RestartAt AppleScript, you can check my archived post on ringtone creation in iTunes (that uses this), or you can search for other entries in the Mail Archive by using the search text box on the page of the ringtone creation post link: http://www.mail-archive.com/macvisionaries%40googlegroups.com/msg09299.html HTH. Cheers, Esther On Oct 25, 2010, Kevin Shaw wrote: Hi Teresa, The short answer is no, however if you hit Command-I and then Command-5, the Get Info window will have an option to "Remember Playback Position." I'm surprised there is no "Jump to Time" feature in iTunes, nor is there the ability to create location markers. Two useful things I think they should implement. Re: AppleScript for Jumping to specific time in iTunes [was Re: Playback Counter in Itunes?]
Hmm good idea. I haven't looked at at AppleScript objects for iTunes. I expect with a couple of properties a iTunes script could be written that prompts for a bookmark name and then creates a a sdifferent dialog could then pull up a combo box or list box of bookmarks. If a audio bookmark management system was generated, should the bookmarks be system wide or disk wide. on On 26/10/2010, Esther wrote: > Hi Teresa and Kevin, > > There is a better solution and a way to jump to a specific time for > any selected track in iTunes (video as well as audio). very interesting... I am unable to get my SD card reccognized when I plutplug the USB of the Victor Reader into my MacBook. But I have an external card reader where the SD works fine. Bill is responsible for that robot they call narrator and he claims windows is accessible. While our friends at Apple, actually have a real screenreader built in to their system. Re: Microsoft Office 2011 period
Unm it's not Bill's fault though. A big part of the reason that Microsoft doesn't have native accessibility is the way a subset of the blind community handled accessibility and MS years back. There were a whole series of payoffs and backroom dealings that took place on behalf of some organizations who make money by selling 3rd party tools. Microsoft truth be told wanted to include a screen reader with the OS and make their tools accessible but found again a certain subset protesting on their front door as a result. (because they were paid off by a certain screen reader company founder to do so to the tune of 7 figures) This same subset still writes hit pieces against Apple today because they do not get a cut of the Apple accessibility pie. Don't think I defend Microsoft unconditionally, I generally hate their products and their developers come from the back of the class but in this case at least your anger is a bit misdirected. skype madness! please help.
Ok guys, I was about to think that the mac is easier and more trubble free to manage and operate, but I am not so sure after all. I am trying to completely uninstall Skype from my computer, so that I will be able to try an older version to see if It solves my problem. I go to the applications folder, locate Skype on the list, open the menu and move it to the trash. Then, I go to my home folder, and under library, I move to the trash the skype folder there. Well, every time I star the computer a Skype volume mounts on the desktop and Skype runs as before. So I go to the downloads folder and trash Skype also from there. Nothing, next restart, volume mounts and Skype is running. I must get rid of Skype completely, so that I can reinstall from scratch an earlier version. I don't know what else to do. Please help! Hello folks, Why are you folks wasting so much valuable time and bandwidth with Microsoft bashing? It doesn't change a thing! Will the moderators have to step in again and say let's get on with Mac issues and stop the Microsoft bashing? Besides, with as much money as Microsoft has, I find it hard to believe that a certain individual can buy them off with a million dollars or even nine million. What's nine million against thirty eight billion? Let's stop the bashing.. Re: Sd and Mac
Hi John: I initially had to go to disk utility and "mount" to get the mbp to recognize the stream. Once I did that, they seemed to copperate pretty well together. I was able to copy content on an alternative card at the apple store. So, it must be something with perhaps the 16 vs 32 thing, or perhaps the brand of card. Re: skype madness! please help.
I installed and uninstalled skype three times, the fourth time I tried the older version and that made my issues go away. When it mounts, you should see that as an external harddrive or CD/DVD, if you use VO+shift+M you get the context menu and one of the options in there is "eject", click that and it's gone from the desktop. Maybe an app like app trap or trash me does all that stuff for you (I wouldn't know, having not tried one of those). Keep in mind it is a completely different operating system and it does have a learning curve, so noone can really get familiar with it within a few days. -- Ruud -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. Anyone tried to use itunes help lately?
Hi all, Just wondering if anyone's tried to use itunes help lately. I tried searching to figure out the way to burtn a CD. I got the itunes busy message, and it just kept repeating over and over again. I was thinking of reporting this to accessibility, but thought I'd check to see if anyone else has experienced the problem. Re: Microsoft Office 2011 period
Am I writing to a puzzle freak? Because if you really enjoy puzzles I'll make a couple suggestions which will enable you to stick a fork in that counsellor. The ruby scripting language is available for the mac probably in the development tree. I installed the development tree but the mac isn't plugged up now so will have to go check this out later. The documentation in html form for ruby is at http://ruby-doc.org/ and it's a scripting language. So if you can write bash scripts you can learn to write ruby scripts. Additionally, http://www.empowermentzone.com/ruby-doc.zip has a bunch of ruby books in it you can read through and learn from. ruby is in demand these days. Another web site http://www.rentacoder.com has people on it that offer programming work and bid on projects. Many people from India on that site you'll be bidding against, but for a while you'll need practice after picking up the language so will do well to undercut your competition. If you manage to get a good reputation, then work and money will find you. At that time, you may have enough money from doing the other work to enable further technology exploration. On Tue, 26 Oct 2010, Carolyn Haas wrote: Heather: I share your prospective. I just met with a rehab counsellor who insists that there's really no place for the Mac in the work world. Advice for purchasing a New IMac
Hello all, I have not used the mac computer systems in about fifteen years but am making the final decisions for my purchase of an IMac. Does anyone have advice. I am a totally blind user. I have decided it will be most useful to bootcamp my computer so as to have scanning capabilities. I am told there is no accessible software on the Mac for my scanning needs? I ahve been using kerzweil. Right now I am planning to go with Freedom Scientific's openbook and the Freedom Scientific Pearl which is portable and uses a camera rather than a flat bed scanner. Before I make that commitment I want to be sure there is nothing out there for the Mac. I am planning to use iwork but there have been some suggestions I go with Microsoft for Mac. I currently use Jaws 11 on a windows 7 with Microsoft office 2007. My primary uses on the computer are: word processing, excel, e-mail and internet searches as well as scanning outlined above. I have no technical background. It was suggested I get 500 gb and a separate 500 gb external drive for backup rather than the 1 terabite. If anyone has any advice to throw in before I make the final purchase decisions, that would be great. Re: Advice for purchasing a New IMac
well, I am not sure about the accessible scanner software. however, you can do most of your word processing on the mac. I didn't know that microsoft office was available for the mac. The one thing I can tell you is that the mac is not a respectable part of the marketplace and a lot of blind people who use computers also like the mac (those that have one anyway). I don't use windows here as I don't have the funds to get the accessibility software. I haven't tried looking around for good OCR software yet (but I do see a need for it). I may have to have someone help me bring my windows box back up and install NVDA and see what I can do with it. there's plenty of cheap software for the windows PC, but like anything else, it requires funds I don't currently have. -Eric On Oct 26, 2010, at 6:40 PM, Sharon Ballantyne wrote: > Hello all, > > I have not used the mac computer systems in about fifteen years but am making > the final decisions for my purchase of an IMac. Re: Garageband and Logic...
Hi David, Yep, you can open GB projects in Logic and go further from there. Since all your Logic sounds and loops also appear in GB, and the other way around, your project will sound the same in both apps. By using Logic's feature where all audio, samples and loops can be stored into one folder, you can then take your work to other studios running Logic without bringing your library. Re: Editing loops in garageband 11?
Here's a quick question. Is it now possible to edit your tempo marking in the song? You use to not have that ability with voiceover. Also, is it possible to import a file onto a track such as a stereo mix of a song? I want to be able to import a file into gb, sequence some drums over it using the jampack drums, and export out that single track as an audio file to import back into Pro Tools. I couldn't find a way to do this in iLive 09, so was wondering if any of you cats who now have 11 know if this is now possible? My iLife comes tomorrow, and am really excited to see how this can really impact my recording work. Re: Advice for purchasing a New IMac
Yep, I'm sorry to have to give you the bad news, but it just won't work. iWorks does however. Numbers (the spreadsheet app) and Pages (word processing) are working very well for me. Don't really know about Keynote (presentations), I would actually like to know if someone is using it successfully to read slideshows and make their own? Well iWorks can read and save as Microsoft documents if you need that, and also rtf. Re: Advice for purchasing a New IMac
Hi Sharon: I would say you may not need to invest in Freedom Scientific's Open book for scanning. Your Mac will interface with many scanners, and you can do perfectly well using image capture and a good OCR program such as Abbyy Fine reader. It costs a lot less than Open book, and people are using it quite successfully. However, go with what you feel wil work best for you. Macs and Rehab agenciesRe: Microsoft Office 2011 period
Hello all, I suppose I should count myself very fortunate. It took a lot of work on my part, but I managed to convince my Rehab counselor here in San Diego that a Mac was the best option for a new laptop for yours truly. I started the process in March, and I got my Macbook Pro just last week. It did help, of course, that I was able to demonstrate that I had work opportunities with people and organizations that were primarily using Macs. -Joshua On Oct 26, 2010, at 8:59 PM, Carolyn Haas wrote: > Hi Scott: > Denver Co, home of the lousy broncos and the lousier rehab department. Re: Advice for purchasing a New IMac
Hello Sharon, I know two people that got a Pearl and sent it back. Like a flatbed scanner it seems to not like anything that wasn't completely flat and consequently screwed up the OCR proces into unreadable gook. Getting the orientation right for scanning seemed to be another issue for them. OK, so it can scan at a nice speed, but that's completely void if you can't get the orientation under the camera right. To me it seems you can get a working scanner and OCR program for quite a bit cheaper than just the price of the Pearl regardless if it's in mac or windows. -- Ruud -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. Cheree Heppe here: Way to go!! Maybe you should describe your strategies. A lot of blind people I've spoken with want to migrate. Is this the latest Air incarnation that just came out? I just saw it.
