It was an ad for our competitor, but I think we could make such an ad
ourselves and see if we can get it published. We could draft it on the
wiki, maybe, or on an etherpad-like tool.

Hi,

The story has been available since April, 2013:
https://launchpad.net/startubuntu

Someone just needs to contact these websites and ask them nicely to publish
a story about StartUbuntu

http://www.infoworld.com/

http://www.itworld.com/

http://www.networkworld.com/

I have previously contacted several websites. Some have published:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StartUbuntu/Activities
Some have promised to do that but haven't yet.
Some didn't even reply back.

Thanks!

Hi,

I see lots of progress, well done :)

My Opinion:

+1 for Design #3 - Xubuntu Style. Why? simply because it will allow you to
add max 12 Links (4 at each square and you can add one more square if
needed) on these 3 squares without taking so much space.

And, if you could have a mixture design of: #1 and #2, that could be great
too. Small icons with different background colour will make the small icons
more visible :)

And, yes, this is not a final draft so totally understand that.

Great job, keep it up and keep them coming ;)

BTW since some of these contacts might be via less than public e-mail

[Lubuntu-comms] [Blueprint windows-xp-users] Simplify the process of migration from Windows XP to Lubuntu

2013-11-11 Thread amjjawad
Blueprint changed by amjjawad:

Whiteboard changed:
[vanyok] Good initiative and golden words, AJ! Who is our video expert?
Leszek? Maybe we can ask him to prepare some introduction videos or there might
be other volunteers to do that.
YouTube is owned by Monster Corporation aka Corporation of Goodness... but
still it's a leader in video hosting area. So... fine.

[JoshwaJustify] That is a very good idea, we could maybe do a video
showing the comparisons between there current system of xp and how
lubuntu provides an alternative, it would have to be short videos such
as 3-5 minutes long to make the videos shareable but its not a bad idea.

[dale-visser] I imagine most newcomers from XP will use the installer
option to preserve Windows and make their system dual boot. Perhaps
there should be some easily discoverable software in Lubuntu that makes
it easy to access and even move their Windows XP user data over to the
Lubuntu partition? In the videos area, I can imagine a page that has
videos labelled for Microsoft Office users...how to get up and running
witht the office applications in Lubuntu, and how to use Software Center
to download and install a Powerpoint or Access alternative, etc.

[SergioMeneses] [Re: JoshwaJustify] we already have a youtube channel
but it has few videos, this would be an amazing idea to bring it back.
  +1

[SergioMeneses] We might create a wiki page with the process as well, I
think it will be easier to translate and we might put this new link on
our website near to our videos or at the description.
+
+ [amjjawad] Then what are we waiting for? ;)

And, until date, there is NO reply from Mario nor anyone else who at least
'claims' that he/she is in charge :)

Before I carry on with the idea I had in mind, I must be extra honest with
all of you.

Lubuntu Team has a big issue which is LACK of communications. I have failed
to find a logical explanation to this. I don't want to make it even worse
but I personally do NOT like the way this team is heading. Yes, we are all
volunteers and yes, real life comes first and all that is totally
understood but what happened to the word: 'commitment' ??? even if this is
a volunteer job or task, people who are in charge/action must communicate
and everyone who thinks he is involved must communicate. Am I missing
something here? is there any other communication channel that I am not
aware of?

*Okay, the plan is:*

Since we haven't received any reply, I do suggest to focus our attention
on: [http://lubuntublog.blogspot.com] instead of the website that WE, as
Lubuntu Team, has NO control over.

This suggestion/idea is based on many reasons:

1- Rafael is the administrator of Lubuntu Blog and he is around and reply
his emails and jump in to help and roll up his sleeves every time we need
his help. He is a real active member who deserves our full respect.

2- Lubuntu Blog can be updated, corrected, publish, etc ... it is an active
channel that WE do have control over.

3- Dealing with Lubuntu Blog is piece of cake. You can always update,
correct mistakes, etc. No big deal.

4- Rafael, AFAIK, doesn't mind to give 'Author' Access to members who are
interested to publish some news and he can remain the admin of the site for
technical issues, etc.

5- Many Websites are based on 'Blog' concept: Peppermint and Ubuntu GNOME
are both based on WordPress: http://ubuntugnome.org/ and
http://peppermintos.com/

So, what do you think?

And, as you may know, it is very easy to focus and drag everyone's
attention to the blog ;)
On Wiki Area and Social Media (Facebook, Google+ and Twitter), we can make
an announcement that Lubuntu Blog is our main channel and let the website
idle as it is.

Few days ago, I changed the access for Mario from Facebook Page Manager to:
Mario Behling
Insights
Analyst
Mario can view insights.

He did not send me yet asking why is that which proves he is either not
interested, or very busy, or inactive and if you ask me, the
managers/admins roles must be given to active people :)

Don't get me wrong, my good frie

I wrote to the mb@ address back on the 6th of November regarding fixing
some small problems with the site's rendering. To my knowledge, I have
not gotten back any kind of response whatsoever. According to whois, he
is still the overall contact for the site but most sites have more than
one with write access.

There is no contact info give, just a redirect to the wiki. Though we
have a lot on the table, this should to be escalated. There need to be
at least two with write access to the web site so that should something
happen to one, like we have now, the other can still carry on.

[Lubuntu-comms] Leading Lubuntu Brainstorming Team and Others

2013-11-11 Thread Ali Linx (amjjawad)
Hi,

Long story short, due to the lack of communications between Lubuntu Team
Members/Community and due to unsolved issues that it seems Myself and ONLY
few are running after to solve and due to the fact that there are ONLY VERY
few active members who are supporting and helping as much as they can, it
seems my thoughts, activities and approach with Lubuntu is going to a dead
end.

I have done my very best. I got burned out many many times. I have suffered
a lot and I have given more than what I'm supposed to give, etc. ALL that
because I love Lubuntu. But, this is getting no where and I am seriously,
very tired.

If there is someone who would like to take over the Brainstorming Area and
take over the Ownership of Lubuntu Communications Team and all the other
stuff that I am in charged of: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/amjjawad/Lubuntu-Team

Please, let me know :)

I will be around whenever you need me as I shall never turn my back to
anyone in need of my help.

Good Luck and All the best!

The very first thing I have given access to when I joined Peppermint was
the website: http://peppermintos.com/ + all the social media channels. (
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/amjjawad/#Peppermint).

And, same goes with Ubuntu GNOME: http://ubuntugnome.org/

For +2 years with Lubuntu, the team has failed to gain access to its own
website.

I don't know, I am running out of thoughts :)

Yes, it is no surprise that other projects have it better in this regard.

If it can be documented as having gone on that long, then maybe it is
necessary to contact someone for Ubuntu who can sort out community
issues. This does seem like a dispute of sorts. However, before that,
I see that Leszek Lesner, Stefano Piccin, Naveen Agarwal, and Julien
Lavergne are listed as developers. [1] Can any shed light on the access
question?

Hi Sergio,

I have updated the Blueprint with my latest email and there was a
conversation between myself and Lars on the Comms Team Mailing List - you
can always check the Public Archive.

The Q you have asked is an old 'unanswered' Q for two years :D
Yes, shocked? that is the truth. I am sure if you dig on the archive of
Lubuntu Mailing List, you will find some emails about the website. You will

[Lubuntu-comms] History of Lubuntu Website - lubuntu.net

2013-11-11 Thread Ali Linx (amjjawad)
Hi,

Some old threads found on the Public Archive of Lubuntu Mailing List:

   1. https://lists.launchpad.net/lubuntu-desktop/msg04911.html - Unsolved.
   2. https://lists.launchpad.net/lubuntu-desktop/msg05038.html - Unsolved.
   3. https://lists.launchpad.net/lubuntu-desktop/msg05474.html - someone
has offered his help to build a new website for Lubuntu and he had not got
the support he needed as far as I remember.
   4. https://lists.launchpad.net/lubuntu-desktop/msg05377.html - back in
time when there were some kind of activities on the website.
   5.
   https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/lubuntu-users/2012-January/18.html-
back in time when there was some activities and some 'replies' from
people who have access to the website.
   6.
   https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/lubuntu-users/2012-February/000423.html-
when there was some replies.
   7.
   https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/lubuntu-users/2012-February/000499.html-
very interesting thread :)
   8. https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/lubuntu-users/2012-March/000676.html-
another thread
   9. https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/lubuntu-users/2012-March/000740.html-
still interesting to look at
   10. https://lists.launchpad.net/lubuntu-comms/msg00063.html - one of the
related problems was the Twitter Account as it was with Mario (login
details) and he refused to give it to anyone and after so many emails and
endless tries, we failed to get the login details and that is when we
decided to create NEW twitter account. If you check twitter, you fill find
3 accounts, all claim to be the official one :D
   11. Yet, another email:
   https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/lubuntu-users/2012-February/000449.html
   12. https://lists.launchpad.net/lubuntu-comms/msg00092.html - some
   issues started to come up
   13. Some interested threads about the website and the twitter account:
   https://lists.launchpad.net/lubuntu-comms/thrd4.html
   14. https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/lubuntu-users/2012-June/001654.html-
Long thread about the website.
   15. FOR those who don't know that, this is when Julien officially
   resigned from leading Lubuntu:
   https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/lubuntu-users/2012-May/001516.html -
at that time, there was some issues on the team I think started from April
or May, can't remember but that was the email which has changed a lot in
   Lubuntu, at least IMHO.
   16. From Mario:
   https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/lubuntu-users/2012-May/001415.html - I
guess after that period, no one has ever heard from him again but I could
   be wrong about the date.
   17. Someone who offered his help and waited for so long but ... well,
   read:
   https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/lubuntu-users/2013-February/003391.html
   18. 4-May-2013, I sent a long email to Julien about the website but that
email never got an answer until date.

And, I am sure there are twice more threads on the archive on Lubuntu
Mailing List (main) and Lubuntu Comms Archive.

You see, the website issue has been the Mission Impossible for Lubuntu for
years.

THIS EMAIL JUST to shade more light on the issue :)

Give me one good reason why should I keep fighting for this cause? do you
think we can take the control over our own website? I don't think so.

Moving to plan B whatever it is? could be.

Do you have another thought?

Now, you guys have the history of Lubuntu Website, AKA lubuntu.net :)

I have nothing more to give/provide anymore when it comes to the website.
This must be a community decision either to do something and take over the
control over their own website OR go for Plan B (whatever you see fit).

Thanks!

There is no reply in the form of a mail, but someone has edited the text
about PAE, that I requested on the page Lubuntu.net. The edit is done in
a positive way (improving the text).

So there is response. Who edited the page? Is there some link, that we
@Lubuntu-comms don't know?

What does Julien Lavergne know? Has he got a password to edit the page
or is he asking Mario Behling to edit the page (in private communications)?

What does Julien think about our activity? Maybe he does not want us to
get control of Lubuntu.net.

Who dares or wants to ask Julien?

Well what's been tried before hasn't worked. What's left to try?

Does someone on the list have contacts in Canonical?

I know of three persons, who have been engaged in Lubuntu, that I know
have direct contacts with Ubuntu/Canonical

Phill Whiteside
Lance
Julien Lavergne

but I would hesitate to bother any of them with this issue.

[Lubuntu-comms] http://lubuntu.net

2013-11-11 Thread Ali Linx (amjjawad)
Dear Mario,

I hope this email finds you well :)

It's been one year and a half and I have never seen one word from you so I
am seriously started to be worried, are you okay? I do hope you are doing
well and in good health.

As pointed out on the Subject of this email, this is regarding a very old
unresolved issue related to the whole Lubuntu Community.

AFAIK, you are the only one who has access to Lubuntu Website. Myself and
some good friends of mine have failed to find out who else has access to
that area beside you and after chasing down this very issue, we ended up
banding our head against the wall because no one knows who exactly can make
one simple edit on the website of Lubuntu.

Before I send this email, I went back to the Archive of Lubuntu:

https://launchpad.net/~lubuntu-desktop
https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/lubuntu-users/
https://launchpad.net/~lubuntu-comms

I wanted to double check if there was some hope previously regarding this
issue but sadly, I have ended up with no hope and a dead end. This was and
still going to absolutely no where.

I am sending this email not as a Team Leader of this Community but as a
Lubuntu User who has a feedback or a suggestion and I'd like to send it and
share it with the whole community :)

Mario, if you are inactive, not interested, busy, etc and have no time or
can not or don't want to do anything for Lubuntu Website, kindly provide
the access to the right people who would love to jump in, roll up their
sleeves and contribute to the website of the system they love, like, use
and share with their love ones :)

I believe, this is the simplest, easiest and humblest request after all
that time.

Not to speak on someone's else behalf but there are some members who are
confused and don't know what to do nor they like the fact of not having any
kind of access/control over the website of the community they are part of
and contribute to.

Thank you for your understanding and I do hope that we could reach to a
solution for this unresolved issue :)

@Lubuntu Community:

If there is someone else who can still read this and indeed has an access
to Lubuntu Website, would you please be so kind and nice and speak up? it
is not nice that we keep banging our heads against the wall, looking for
someone who can update the information and correct the mistakes on the
website and we can't find anyone whatsoever so kindly, say something :)

@Everyone:

After this email, if this very issue won't get resolved, some good friends
suggested to contact Canonical and escalate the issue to someone who might
be able to help or advise, at least.

No need to be negative and assume this will not be resolved but just in
case, we could for now use Lubuntu Blog (lubuntublog.blogspot.com) as a
Temporary Solution and as a permanent solution, the community need to come
up with something like another website or any other solution the community
see fit :)

Just a thought/suggestion/idea :)

Thank you everyone!

Hi,

  Kindly have a read at:

 https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Lubuntu/Get%20Involved/WhoWeAre

I have updated this Wiki Page with some new information which a bit
 more in details than here:
 https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Lubuntu/GettingInvolved#Lubuntu_Community

Myself and some 'active' members of Lubuntu have discussed lately
about the activities of the team in general. We have noticed there are some
people who remain silent for months without any notice and then show up
suddenly then disappear again. We noticed that the list of members need to
be cleaned up so the Team Leaders of Lubuntu know at least who is
contributing and ask them for help and who is not. We have noticed that the
overall activities have been much less and while this could be normal in
regular releases at this stage, it is NOT for this cycle - why? simply
because Lubuntu 14.04 is going to be an LTS Release and that requires lots
of 'TEAM' work and I insist, TEAM WORK.

Also, we *(active members of the team) *came to understand that
previously, some tasks/roles were being handled by only 1-2 people if not
only one. This has proved to add unbelievable stress and huge burden over
the shoulder of those people. And, in most times, when they were in need to
help and support, they got very little bit of it. THIS must NOT be the case
in this cycle. And, I am sorry to be extra honest here but I will simply
leave Lubuntu once and for all if I will continue to feel that this is a
few people job rather than a Community and Team work.

Team work = "We must all have a great sense of responsibility and not
let things happen because everyone takes the comfortable view that someone
else is looking after it. Someone else isn't looking after it."

Lubuntu needs you for the coming 6 months and even after releasing
Lubuntu 14.04 LTS, whether it will be supported for 2 years or more Lubuntu
will still need you. Please, don't let Lubuntu down!

You may wonder what is the big deal behind all that but for myself
and some other members, this is called Loyalty and being in love with
Lubuntu which will make you dedicate some of your own time to do things and
most of the time, do more than what you are supposed to do. Lubuntu has a
special magic that not only can breathe new life into an old semi-dead
machine but can take you far away and open your mind and change your life.

Before the Real Hard and Tough Work starts for 14.04, it is a very
good time to discuss such issues before 'active' people get busy with
testing, bugs, etc and won't have time to stuff like that :)

 https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Lubuntu/Get%20Involved/WhoWeAre

Hopefully, we can get this list updated soon!
Because, we do need to know who is contributing and participating and
who is not. At least, for our information and I see nothing wrong with that
 :)

I really like Xubuntu style, it is easier to add content than the others

I do have some friend who works for Canonical and other with Ubuntu
Membership but I guess those who work with Canonical could have the upper
hand. However, not sure who can help in this very specific issue!

I know Nicholas Skaggs.

Perhaps there is a mailing list or IRC channel or a sub-forum for these
kinds of issues? not really sure.

Well, Superman does have his helpers, doesn't he? :p

In one word, is there a TODO somewhere?

(I didn't read the whole content of the mails for they were too long).

Here are things I would like to try to participate to during the coming months
until
Trusty is out:
* Report bugs against the Lubuntu Software Center (because it works much less
well than
the official one and has less descriptions of programs translated to my native
language,
which might be the same for other languages);

* Participate to testing alphas, but I am not there yet because I don't have
enough time
available ATM;

* Continue to read the incoming mails from the lubuntu - brainstorming and qa -
and
participate modestly where I think I am able to;

Regards,
Mélodie

Using Lubuntu Blog is SUPER easy and at least, anyone can do it. It is
piece of cake. I know because I have many blogs - example:
http://amjjawad.blogspot.com and http://ali-bethechange.blogspot.com

Ubuntu GNOME and Peppermint are using WordPress and I have access to both
from day 1 (didn't have to wait 2 years :P)

Rafael is already posting on the blog but if we decided to use the blog is
Lubuntu Main Website or to replace the website that we have no control over
nor can update anything on it, then I guess more people need to be
involved. The Setup of the blog is perfect and s beautiful, it just needs
more contributors.

I see no reason to hold us back as long as the website issue has been alive
for 2 years and God knows how many more years it will remain like that :)

Indeed. 'Someone'. WHO IS that someone? :D guess what? the real question is
not WHO is doing that, the Q is WHY is he/she hiding :D

And, by the way, that is not everything :D
The website if FULL of weak points that must be corrected/improved. Example?

1- The Website is still telling the world that Chromium is the default
browser :D check the slide show, slide no.3 :D
2- NOT even one word about Lubuntu 14.04 being an LTS
3- The website is actually a ONE Page site with links, almost all these
links are pointed or directed to the Wiki Area :D my personal blog has more
pages than Lubuntu website :P http://amjjawad.blogspot.com
4- The website MUST have a Website Administrator. Someone I know has joined
PeppermintOS and Ubuntu GNOME and they given him access to their website
despite the fact he is NEW to these community :D maybe Lubuntu current
website master can't trust anyone? I have no clue.

For Lubuntu 14.04: https://blueprints.launchpad.net/lubuntu-brainstorming

I recommend to have a look at: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Lubuntu/Brainstorming

I have decided to discuss each and every thing related to Lubuntu as a
system and Lubuntu as a Team and community on the blueprints and we are
using the mailing lists as well.

Sometimes, it is a huge pain in the neck (I do suffer from that) but it is
important :) but it depends on what kind of discussion is going on.

Hold your horses :P :P
Why so in hurry?

I was trying to say, it is good idea to have a final draft before we go for
a final design. So, before the header go live into the live area, it could
still remain on your sandbox area for one more night ;)

The team needs to see the header and how it will look like before going
live and IMHO, it is good idea to use different colours than the one on
your sandbox area because these colours are similar to Xubuntu, right? I
suggest to use only one colour no need to make it complicated and use more
:) just a thought.

YAY, new header is coming :D

Hi,

I am afraid I can't remember which I have sent to and haven't replied (that

people and the last one who promised to publish something was ZDNet -

Can you recall who? ZDNet has a range of people from full time MS
people masquerading as journalists to actual technology journalists.
Some will be more open (no pun intended) than others.

Not at the moment. I tried to find that on my sent items but couldn't but
that should not be hard. A quick google search, can bring a list of many IT
Websites, Magazines, etc that can be contacted.

Why not? :)
I have contacted several parties so I guess if the team wants to play a
role in this, why not?

It should not be hard. Few words to summarize everything with a link of
StartUbuntu Wiki Page: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StartUbuntu

It shouldn't talk more than 5-15 mins MAX to do that.

Are you referring to a standard text that we can write and use it as a
template to be sent to other parties?

I was thinking of the fancy, wordy advertising passed around as
"whitepapers" Basically it would be a write up of the benefits of Lubuntu.

I will provide some criticisms here (not that you have not worked hard, I let
you decide
if my criticism can be helpful):

This is not a todo, this is a list of TODO's.

While asking for a todo I was expecting a simple list ordered by "the most
hurrying" and
eventually followed by tasks which would be listed under "the easiest" (for
what is done
is not to be done again… normally… )

It could be followed by a TODO which would have for name "Future TODO", or
"Next TODO".
Just one list with precise directions.

The other criticism is so, this one blueprint:
https://blueprints.launchpad.net/lubuntu-brainstorming/+spec/lubuntu-sub-teams

Quote:
«»

No I can't quote. I don't know where this post is going but I am lost as soon
as I start
reading. I am looking for clear instructions on things which need to be done
and I don't
find any at the beginning, in the middle and I don't know what that post is
meant for,
it's not a TODO: in the context of my question, it is fully Off Topic. :-|

> I have decided to discuss each and every thing related to Lubuntu as a
> system and Lubuntu as a Team and community on the blueprints and we are
> using the mailing lists as well.

This spreads the energy. I suppose a blueprint means something such as "a map",
a
roadline, and should not replace discussions on a mailing list, but offer a
space where
people will focuse on a precise tasks to bring ideas which can be picked up
directly by
the developers to improve a program or create a new one.

Therefore and with all due respect, discussion on blueprints about the team and
the
community(ies) seems to me irrelevant.

If I am wrong about that, you and anyone else can feel free to tell me.

Are we going to have Lubuntu Manual for 14.04 or not?
How long does it take to decide that?
Are the people who signed up for this are still interested or not?
Do we need to find more people?
Is there anyone else who would like to join?
Do we have to ask on our Social Media whether someone might be interested
to join?
Do we have to seek Ubuntu Manual Team help or advice?

Thank you!

P.S.
I have included all the Sub-Teams because this, IMHO, must be a
community/team work and I am sure the manual will need information from all
the sub-teams :)

[Lubuntu-comms] Adding Contact Us Page/Tab

2013-11-11 Thread Ali Linx (amjjawad)
Hi Rafael,

http://lubuntublog.blogspot.com

Can you please add: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Lubuntu/ContactUs
As a tab/page on Lubuntu Blog? that would be so helpful :)

Also, is it possible to add something about the Social Media?

Twitter: https://twitter.com/LubuntuOfficial

Google+:
https://plus.google.com/u/0/b/106362800741775815583/106362800741775815583/posts

I can indeed see Facebook only but there is no Google+ nor Twitter.
Blogspot already has gadget for Google+ but not quite sure about Twitter.

Thank you :)

someone I can trust, the whole community can trust and he can move forward.
I have done my part, now, it is your turn :P

I love Lubuntu so no need to thank me but you welcome :)

Who told you I am? hahaha, of course I am not ;)
I shall remain an admin to help whenever needed but NOT the owner of the
team. I feel I am a FREE bird when I have no roles because once you are the
owner/leader of a team, you should do a lot and for me, I am no longer
interested to lead the Communications team. It is time for someone else to
take the lead of that department :) I know for a fact that you can do it
and you DO HAVE MY FULL Support so no worries :D

Blueprint changed by amjjawad:

Whiteboard changed:
[amjjawad] IMPORTANT NOTE: From now and on, Team Leaders of other Sub-

of any mess or failure. Having that said, Both Rafael (TL of Artwork)
and Sergio (TL of Wiki) are now Admins on the launchpad for Lubuntu-
  Comms: https://launchpad.net/~lubuntu-comms/+members

- HOWEVER, other TL for other Sub-Teams don't have to do anything at all.
- So, no worries Rafael and Sergio :D
