Re: [GNC] URGENT help needed

2025-02-08 Thread Robert Heller
When you are done using gnucash, just click on the "Save" item in the File
menu (or on the diskett icon in the toolbar), and then click on Quit in the
File menu. I believe if you just click on the Quit item in the file menu it
asks if you want to save the file and you can click Save there and that should
also work. At least that is what works under Linux.

What does not work is to just shutdown your computer or just log out *without*
quiting from gnucash. Yes either of these does kill the program, but not
*cleanly*.

When I set up a new set of books for an existing entity, I do each
account that has a balance with an entry that has an opposite account of
"Opening Balances".  I made this an equity account.

Thus an asset is:

Debit Cash.1.00

    Credit Opening Balances  1.00

A Liability or equity account is similar except that you debit Opening
Balances and credit the account you are establishing.

The result of this is that the opening assets, less the opening
liabilities + opening equity accounts will flow to your equity.

Remember:  Assets = Liabilities + Equity and if you do this, yours will
match this equation.  You should have nothing in Imbalance.

Stay in the black,

Ed Greenberg

It appears we are seeing all these messages on the list the past few days
because of the OTHER situation where GnuCash leaves a lock file -- when it
terminates abnormally. ("Crashes.")

Unfortunately Apple has apparently pushed out a MacOS update that is
incompatible with older versions of GnuCash, so the solution is to upgrade
to the latest, version 5.10. Even more unfortunately, the process is
further complicated by each Mac user needing to know what kind of processor
their computer uses in order to download the version of GnuCash that runs
on it.

Re: [GNC] confusion on new fields in csv import

2025-02-08 Thread sunfish62--- via gnucash-user
Since no one else has stepped in, I'll add my perspective. Please bear in mind
that I don't use csv imports much.

You originally asked what relationship the new terms had to the old ones.

My recollection of the discussions (which take place on gnucash.org, not reddit
or github, fysa) is that the earlier terminology (Deposit/Withdrawal) was
ambiguous and would vary depending on the account type. Formal accountants in
the user group felt that these terms should be replaced with more accurate ones.

I don't recall now why the formal accounting terms (Debit/Credit) weren't
chosen-- but I do know that the option was considered and dropped consciously.

The ultimate decision as I recall was to use the Amount/ Amount (Negated)
terminology as a compromise. I don't recall anything about single versus double
column csv formats.

To answer your original question, Amount and Amount (Negated) correspond to
Deposit and Withdrawal. I suspect Transfer Amount and Transfer Amount (Negated)
 are used in different account types and also correspond to Deposit and
Withdrawal.

Which new entry goes with which old entry I can't say because I don't use csv
imports and I am not an accountant. I imagine a few trials would quickly answer
the question, though.

Re: [GNC] New Company Snafu

2025-02-08 Thread David Cousens

If an Imbalance account has a non-zero balance it will be because you
have entered a transaction without a second entry affecting another
account or in importing data you have not assigned an account to one
of the second (or more) entries of a complete transaction, which are
usually referred to as "splits" in GnuCash and the documantation. A
transaction must have at least two entries a debit to one account and a
credit to another account. It can have more than two entries in which
case the sum of the debit entries must equal the sum of the credit
entries for the transaction. Two or more entries often result from
dealing with tax on purchases, things like discounts.

The Imbalance accounts exists purely to flag that there is a problem
with a transaction and identify the transaction which has the problem
(it appears in the Imbalance account).

It sounds as though you may have created the opening balance entries in
one or more of your Asset accounts without a corresponding entry to the
Equity:Opening Balances account.

Re: [GNC] confusion on new fields in csv import

2025-02-08 Thread Gio Bacareza
Dear Brad and Others,

Thank you for your response.

I appreciate the link you provided, but it seems to only discuss QIF
conversions. While I may consider QIF in the future, I'm currently looking
for guidance specifically on the new CSV import fields in GnuCash 5.10.

I've used CSV import successfully in the past. However, the recent update
introduced new terminology (Amount, Amount (Negated), Transfer Amount,
Transfer Amount (Negated)) that I'm struggling to understand in relation to
my previous CSV structure.

I have already searched the GnuCash documentation and wikis, but I haven't
found any information about these new terms. The documentation still seems
to refer to the old "Withdrawal" and "Deposit" fields.

For example from https://www.gnucash.org/viewdoc.phtml?rev=5&lang=C&doc=help,
this is what it says:

"""

The dropdown list of *GnuCash* transaction data fields which may be
associated with a column of the imported data contains the following:

   -

   *None*: The column is not assigned to a transaction data field and is
   not imported;
   -

   *Date*: Ensure the date format in the column matches the Miscellaneous
   date Format Setting;
   -

   *Num*: Transaction Num field - Use for check numbers etc.;
   -

   *Description*;
   -

   *Notes*;
   -

   *Transaction Commodity*;
   -

   *Void Reason*;
   -

   *Action*;
   -

   *Account*: This header should be matched to a column specifying the
   source account for a transaction if it is present. Otherwise, set the
   source account in the *Account* combo box;
   -

   *Deposit*: Apply this header to a column containing the amount of the
   transaction. Positive amounts in the column generally represent an increase
   in the account balance and negative amounts a decrease in the balance
   (asset accounts: Checking, Savings). In external statements supplied by a
   bank for a check or savings account, a credit (Cr) is normally an increase
   in the account balance and a debit (Dr) a decrease in the account balance.
   In the banks eyes, your savings or checking account is a Liability to them;

   If the amount data is in separate columns for debits and credits you
   will have to apply both this heading and the Withdrawal heading.
   -

   *Withdrawal*: Apply this header to a column with the amount of the
   transaction where positive amounts in the column represent a decrease in
   the account balance and negative amounts an increase in the balance (e.g.
   Liability account: credit card).

"""
And from
https://www.gnucash.org/docs/v5/C/gnucash-manual/trans-import.html#idm6675:
"""

The import panel shows the data being imported as it is interpreted using
the settings chosen to define columns and formats. The dropdown lists in
the headers for each column of the import allow you to associate a specific
column in the imported data with a specific field in the display of a
transaction in an account register. At a minimum to import data, columns in
the imported data containing the following information *must* be specified:

   -

   *Date*: of transaction;
   -

   *Account*: into which transaction is to be imported (or alternatively
   set the base account as above);
   -

   *Description*: of the transaction;
   -

   *Deposit or Withdrawal*: column.

"""

There is no mention at all of the new terms: *Amount, Amount (Negated),
Transfer Amount, Transfer Amount (Negated)*

I would be grateful if you could provide clarification on the new CSV field
names and how they should be used.

By the way, I'm on MacOS Sequoia 15.3

Sincerely,
Gio

[GNC] Invoice configuration?

2025-02-08 Thread Simon Roberts
Hi all, I'm using GNC 5.15 -- at least I think that's right, I built it
a couple of weeks ago so "latest" :)

Can I customize the invoice printing configuration? I have to change
the "Display", "Display Columns", and "Layout" manually every time I
prepare an invoice for PDF. Can the configuration I select for these items
be saved?

I asked this when I was using GNC 4.x and the answer was no, but I'm hoping
this has changed by now?

Thanks for any pointers!
Cheers,
Simon

So I searched more in Reddit and GitHub and it seems that this has not been

[GNC] confusion on new fields in csv import

2025-02-08 Thread flywire
Read the posts around:
https://lists.gnucash.org/pipermail/gnucash-user/2024-July/112480.html

The only sure way is to try Amount and if that doesn't work use Amount
(negated).

[GNC] settings for low-vision users

2025-02-08 Thread Fred
My wife is trying to help a friend with low vision get started in GNUCash.
The friend asked if there is a way to enlarge everything in the GNUCash
window (she is moving from Quicken which, apparently can do that).

Thanks in advance!

Re: [GNC] Settings for low-vision users?

2025-02-08 Thread David H
Hi Fred,

You don't say what OS and Gnucash version your wife's friend is using but
I'm going to assume Windows and a recent version of GnuCash :-)

Gnucash uses GTK3 - the following are links from the wiki that relate to
updating GTK settings - if you check them out you'll see there's a bucket
load of settings you can customise.

https://wiki.gnucash.org/wiki/GTK3
https://wiki.gnucash.org/wiki/Configuration_Locations#In_GTK_CONFIG_HOME

If you go to the Help >> About menu on a recent version of Gnucash it will
display 6 or so file locations - the paths are clickable. Mine looks like
the picture below :-

If you click on the 2nd link (GNC_USERCONFIG_DIR) on a Windows pc it
should open your C:\Users\<>\AppData\Roaming\GnuCash folder -

I have a text file named "gtk-3.0.css" in that folder - make sure you don't
add a ".txt" extension to the file. It has the following entry in it to
control the application wide font setting - you can set the font size up or
down until you find a suitable setting. If you change a setting you need
to restart Gnucash to pick up the new settings.

/* Application wide font setting */
* {
  font: 24px arial;
}

Hope this helps, Cheers David H.

2025-02-08 Thread Fred
Thanks for the tip. Yes, it is Windoze, either 10 or 11, not certain.

I'll pass this on to my wife to try.

Thanks again!
