I get this message too and so far if i click open anyway, i am so far
so good. BUT is there a better way to shut down the gnucash so that
it is saved to a file i have on record with GNU Cash? It pays to

We are NOT sure "you all have the same problem". What you all have is
the same symptom (lock file problem)
In other words, there may be different reasons WHY the lock file is
present when expected to be absent.
Using a "lock file" is a very common solution to control assignment of
a resource in the situation of "multiple sequential users", ensuring
that the resource is used by only one of the users at a time.
As alternative to "open anyway" is to explicitly delete the "lock
file". But first make sure no other instance of gnucash in use AND you
delete the correct "lock file". Like I said, a very common method so
you probably have many apps creating lock files. That is a good reason
to have a directory (file folder) for each set of gnucash books you
keep AND nothing but gnucash stuff in that directory. The you can be
sure which lock file.
