Did you download the Apple Silicon version (Gnucash-Arm-5.10-1) or the Intel

Chris,

Upgrade Gnucash to 5.9-2 or 5.10-1. There is a known problem with 5.8 and MacOS
15, definitely with Apple Chips. I am not sure if it affects Intel chips, but
it probably does.

Best wishes,

Thank you for giving us the details on your GnuCash version and your OS. That
is helpful.

What do you observe? What specific actions do you take to try to open your
files? What do you observe happening? What do you expect to happen?

Do you know where on your Macintosh storage those files are? Could you, for
example, find them so that you can list the in a Finder window? Can you do a
Get Info on those files, to see their size and modification date?

Answers to these questions might be illuminating.

Chris,

Still can't figure out if you are running on Apple Mac Silicon but I think
you must be if you are running macOS Sequoia 15.3 ? In which case you need
to download and install the Apple macOS Apple Silicon version for your mac

... are you sure about that?  This Apple list of Mac models

support macOS Sequoia, and have intel processors. e.g. the MacBook Pro
(13-inch, 2018, Four Thunderbolt 3 ports).

I completely agree with this. There are GnuCash installers for macOS

Re: [GNC] can not open file

2025-02-07 Thread R Losey
Chris:

Apple introduced some kind of bug in 15.1 (maybe 15.2). GnuCash was changed
to get around the problem, so you definitely need the latest version of
GnuCash. As has been stated, please ensure that you download the right
version.

Having said that, the "cannot obtain lock" is a safety feature so that the
GnuCash files are only opened once (for example, I have my GnuCash files
stored on my home NAS, and they can be accessed from any computer in the
house). When GnuCash starts up, it creates a "lock file", and it deletes
it when it shuts down. Anyone else trying to run GnuCash on the same file
will get the warning about not being able to obtain the lock. However, if
GnuCash crashes, or if the computer crashes (or is shut down) while GnuCash
is open, the "lock file" won't get removed, and you get the error message.
If you KNOW that no other computer is running GnuCash and accessing the
files, the "Open Anyway" is safe - it just deletes and then re-creates the
lock file. This lock file feature has saved me a couple of times when I
forgot that I had GnuCash open on another computer.

Hi Jim,

Ah you must be right, my apple MacBook is from 2017 and my iMac from
2014 so my knowledge is a bit hazy on what Sequioa runs on these days.-
it's been quite some time since I had a mocOS version update on the MacBook
let alone the iMac.

These threads are all over the place on users having issues after upgrading
to Sequioa and I thought I remembered a posting from John Ralls that said
you needed to update to the latest version and may have misremebered if it
was talking about apple silicon chips.

So you're correct of course, Chris should download the latest correct
version for his machine and install that to get going again.

[GNC] confusion on new fields in csv import

2025-02-07 Thread Gio Bacareza
Dear GnuCash Community,

I recently upgraded GnuCash on my Mac to Version 5.10 and noticed a
significant change in the CSV import feature. The "Deposit" and
"Withdrawal" fields have been replaced with "Amount," "Amount (Negated),"
"Transfer Amount," and "Transfer Amount (Negated)."

My previous CSV structure was straightforward: date, description, account,
transfer account, withdrawal, deposit. I'm having trouble understanding the
differences between the new fields and how they relate to my old CSV
format. I've searched the documentation, but it doesn't seem to be updated
yet, as it still refers to withdrawals and deposits.

Could you please clarify the purpose of each new field and provide guidance
on how to map my old CSV data to the new format?

Thank you for your time and assistance.

Sincerely,
Gio

Re: [GNC] URGENT help needed

2025-02-07 Thread David Reiser via gnucash-user
You’re using an old version of gnucash. What system version of macOS are you
using? You might have to upgrade gnucash (currently at 5.10). Make sure you
don’t have the gnucash file open already, and if gnucash crashes when you click
the “open anyway” button, then you certainly have a system version/gnucash
version incompatibility.

Re: [GNC] URGENT help needed

2025-02-07 Thread David Reiser via gnucash-user
You’ll have to download the new version from a web browser. The link for the
newest Apple Silicon version points to sourceforge:

https://sourceforge.net/projects/gnucash/files/gnucash%20%28stable%29/5.10/Gnucash-Arm-5.10-1.dmg/download
Dragging the new app version to your Applications folder will install it. I
think the new version will read the old data file. Changing the app itself
doesn’t touch the data.

To be safe, rename the old version of gnucash just to keep it around, and make
a copy of your data file before you attempt to open it in gnucash 5.10.

Make sure you know which version of gnucash is which, so you don’t open the
older version unless your certain you want to.

Thank you for giving us the details on your GnuCash version and your OS.
That is helpful.

What do you observe?  What specific actions do you take to try to open

Do you know where on your Macintosh storage those files are? Could you,

Chris,

Upgrade Gnucash to 5.9-2 or 5.10-1. There is a known problem with 5.8 and MacOS
15, definitely with Apple Chips. I am not sure if it affects Intel chips, but
it probably does.

Has this version of GnuCash ever worked on your computer with this

What version of GNUCash are you using?
https://gnucash.org/download.phtml shows that the current version is
5.10

I forgot to add those details: Fedora Linux 41, Gnucash 5.10

https://wiki.gnucash.org/wiki/FAQ#Importing.2FExporting_Data has some
info on importing data, as you mentioned a regular QIF import

Regarding the stock purchase with 2 start & end transactions, 1 being
balanced and the other being imbalanced - are both entries for the same
transaction? Possibly meaning an importing error?

My guess (based upon looking at the log file) is both are for the same
transaction.

Also, why is the account titled "Imbalance-USD" - ?

In the past, I have seen
   Imbalance-COP
   Imbalance-GBP
   Imbalance-USD
I have transactions in multiple currencies.

Interesting.. These are all 0-value splits, so... nothing to balance
against.
I have no idea how these were created, or why.

HOWEVER -- the transactions in Imbalance SHOULD be connected to
transactions with other accounts. There cannot be a lone-split
Imbalance
transaction. So, Fred, any chance you could show a screen shot of your
Imbalance account?

I can easily create no-account imbalance entries. When doing splits (for
instance, groceries with cash back, or a paycheck with a gaggle of
deductions), as I'm entering, if there's an imbalance at any time an
imbalance entry is created. When I'm finished, it stays there with no
balance, and is reflected as such in the Imbalance-USD (because I'm in
the US) account. I usually make it a point to delete that blank
Imbalance entry before closing out the transaction, just to tidy up.

It might be helpful for GnuCash to do that automagically when a split is
closed with a zero Imbalance entry. Another workaround would be to add
something in the description for the Imbalance entry to show that it was
a temporary working value that can be deleted (manually).

Not sure if that's where the Imbalance transactions are coming from in
this case, but it's a possibility if you're doing splits. I have a note
to self in the Description field for the Imbalance account that says
"Something's wrong - need to fix it" so if there's an actual balance
showing I know to look at it and figure out what I fat-fingered.
Likewise, the Orphan-USD account has a description note that says
"Usually offsets Imbalance" so I know to check it if non-zero.
Otherwise, for either, the zero-balance entries are mainly a nuisance
and usually come from not tidying up splits.
