I am using kernel 2.6.14 without preemptive support and Ben USB sleep
patch. Here is mi cpuinfo
processor : 0
cpu : 7447/7457, altivec supported
clock : 765MHz
revision: 0.1 (pvr 8002 0101)
bogomips: 508.92
machine : PowerBook5,2
motherboard : PowerBook5,2 MacRISC3 Power Macintosh
detected as : 287 (PowerBook G4 15")
pmac flags : 001b
L2 cache: 512K unified
memory : 512MB
pmac-generation : NewWorld

I am using Debian/Unstable, and when I put mi PB to sleep (closing the
lid) I recieved a crash that appears to be something releated to the
video system (Radeon).
Later I will post the information that shows Linux kernel when it crashes.
It crashes when I try to resume from the sleep.

Yes and no.
Bluetooth works great (I have an Motorola V600 and Palm Tungsten T3), I
can sync my palm and make GPRS connections with bluetooth. So bluetooth
works.
I also have an IPod and you can sync songs with it under Linux, I make
the connection by firewire and I see the IPod like a scsi disc, so you
can use your IPod...
Wifi well in this point we have some problems, there is no support
under Linux for the airport extreme.
I use an 3com B pcmcia card, but I have an 15" Powerbook G4 1.25Ghz, in
your case you can't use wifi because you don't have pcmcia port.

It works great with Linux (you don't have Airport Extreme, 3D accel,
suspends capability and modem).
It's my second Apple (my first was an Apple ][ in 1984)

Re: Test patch for sleep on Aluminium PowerBooks

2004-11-10 Thread Federico Gamio
Hi,

My 15" PowerBook (5,2) (1.25Ghz) can't resume from sleep.
I have unstable Debian with 2.6.9 + alubuttons-patch +
albook-sleep-patch
I use pbbuttonsd 6.3-1 (no pmud because you can´t install both) and
cpudyn 1.01
I use XFS filesystems, and the last test with 2.6.9 + swsusp-patch make
my XFS root filesystem inconsisten (good bless xfs_repair :)
Right now I am using 2.6.9 WITHOUT swsusp support.
If I put "echo disk > /sys/power/state" the system hibernate, but if I
put "echo mem > /sys/power/state" nothing happens (I read that it is
suppose to make the system sleep).
If I press briefly the power buttons, then the systems apparently goes
to sleep and the white led starts changing his intensity like in MacOS
The problem is that I can't wake up the computer, no mater what I do
(press any key, move the mouse, press the power button briefly, stand up
on the power button) nothing works, the PB stays dead for about 2-3
minutes and then it reboots and boots up normally, like if I turned up.
I am missing something?
I have to configure something else?
There is no special configuration in the default pbbuttonsd debian
package for suspend-to-ram.

Regards
Federico

It make sense.

Well, remember that I have the light sensors activated, so pbbuttonsd
changes the LCD according to the light condition (it also illuminates
the backlight keyboard).

Yes, I read that, it seems that I have something different :(

Yes, right now I disabled the swsusp.

This patch is for the special keys to control keyboard backlight.

One simple question.
Haw can I debug the sleep process or wakeup process?

This is exactly what happens to me.
I press the power button or close the lid with connected to AC (right
now I have pbbuttonsd 0.6.6-1) and it goes to sleep.
I press any key and all freeze :(

Done Ben, and guess what?
It works.
The problem is solved when you don't apply swsusp patch.
So, you can't apply swsusp patch if you want suspend to ram in
Powerbooks :)
Right now it works with snooze -f and with pbbuttonsd
Well, almost perfect piece of linux hardware :), one thing less that
doesn't work, right now my list is
  - 3D support
  - Airport (no hope)
  - Modem

Ben,

I don't know if I am doing something wrong, but when I suspend to ram
and resume, all the stuff works, but when I try to play any video
(mplayer, vlc and xine) it shows like when you select an empty air
channel in you TV, but in green :).
I repeated this test, and I can play any video, until I use sleep to ram
function... then I have to reboot to use it again.
I suppose that something in the Ati 9600 is not setup properly in the
sleep to ram process.

Not at this time.
But Yes now :)
Bug solved, now I suffer from very low sound volume when I came back
from sleep (I already read your answer in other thread saying that is
sound driver problem... so is not you bug :)

Re: TEST: Sleep patch #6

2004-12-03 Thread Federico Gamio
With patch #6 in some random situations, my PowerBook G4 (ATI 9600)
doesn't goes to sleep.
One situation is:
 - Turn PB
 - Work
 - Sleep
 - 14 hours of sleep
 - Turn back from sleep (perfect, no problem at all)
 - Work for 4 hours (mails, www, no USB, Bluetooth, etc)
 - Try to sleep and problem...

When I try to make sleep my PB, nothing happens (in X), and I can't
switch from X to console.
Sorry, I can't help you more with this bug, I will keep trying to
establish which are the events that trigger this bug.

USB drive mount problems (udev+2.6.9)

2004-12-06 Thread Federico Gamio
When I connect my 512Mb pen drive at my PowerBook G4 (15" PB5,2), the
udev system creates automatically /dev/uba and /dev/uba1
When I mount /dev/uba1 (/dev/uba1 is a vfat filesystem) everything works
great, I can read and write my pen drive. But when I tried to unmount,
(if I wrote some data to the flash device) the light of the pen drive
starts blinking very quickly for ever and I'm unable to unmount my pen
drive.
It appears to be a sync problem.
If I power down my PB, in the pen drive I have the files transfered to
the device but with 0 bytes size.
It is not problem of my pen drive, because if I use mtools works great.
Same problem with a compact flash.
Any idea?

My 15" PowerBook (1.25Ghz, ATI 9600, PowerBook5.2) has the same problem
with suspend to ram patch.
I can suspend closing the lid or pushing the power button (I use
pbbuttonsd) and all works perfect.
I can repeat this for several times, but in some cases they don't want
to go sleep and the LCD remains active.
If I try to shutdown with init 0, then X become corrupt and the system
freeze, so I believe that there is a bug in radeon suspend/resume.
I can't reproduce the bug, it shows when he want :(

Ok, here's the 7th version of the sleep patch for ATI based albooks &
iBook G4. Other machine users, please test too as it may cause
regressions (or improvements) as well.

I can't reproduce the bug, it shows when he want :(

can you try in console mode without X using "snooze -f" repeately, does
it ever happen ?

Ben,

The problem triggers when you keep in sleep mode for 6 hours (I wlll
try shorter periods).

With "snooze -f" and console makes no difference.
Right now I have my PB displaying (sorry if I make some mistake, but I
will copy all debug information by hand):

[Powerbook] No init Found. Try passing init= option to kernel

2003-12-13 Thread Federico Gamio
Hi All,

I have a new Powerbook 15" 1.25 Ghz (bye bye Sony R505) and my natural
choice was Debian :)
I managed to install Debian unstable with X, sound, etc etc...
Everything is working -no Airport Extreme... :( -
All of my partitions are in ext3 (more stable... well I am not pretty sure
right now)
All of my kernels have support for ext3 compiled.
Well, I was making an apt-get upgrade when suddenly the system starts making
weird things... (when I try to log in other terminal, the init process tell
me that getty was respanwing to fast)
So I reboot the machine, and right now I am unable to boot the system.
I checked the root filesystem with Knoppix-MIB and is OK without any error,
I can mount and read all the data is there.
My fstab is correct
I try passing to kernel init=/bin/bash and root=/dev/hda6 with no success
All the data appears to be intact.
I have 4 differents kernel Images (2.4.22-benh and 2.6.0-test11-benh)
installed and all makes the same
I suspected init corruption, so I copy the /sbin/init from the image of
Knoppix and nothing happens
Any clue, any idea?
Has anyone an boot rescue ISO image?
I was trying to make an chroot with Knoppix MIB and I get /bin/sh No such
file

Thanks in advance
   Federico

Hi,

Well I can't make lmu work.
I have kerenl 2.6.1-ben1 with i2c-dev support and /dev/i2c-0 with mayor
and minor 89,0
When I execute as root lmu then I have this result:
# ./lmu
left sensor:0
right sensor: 0

So, what I am doing wrong?
I have Alu 15" 1.25Ghz with Debian unstable and kernel config is the

I am playing with lmu.c so you can automatically adjust your keyboad
backlight and lcd bright automatically depending in lights coniditions.
Later I will post the little program...

I've added the ability of changing the brightness of the lcd, so now
automatically at lowers light conditions, you will get lower lcd
brightness and higher keyboard backlight.

You can see this version at:
http://isadora.homelinux.net/lmud/lmud-0.02-fg.tar.gz

It's works nicely in a 1.25Ghz 15" Alu Powerbook

Re: Keyboard backlight support in the near future?

2004-01-19 Thread Federico Gamio
Hi,

Well, this version uses /dev/pmu and framebuffer to change lcd
brightness (the function was taken from pmud package)
Please check if you have /dev/pmu defined (mayor=10, minor=154 char
device)
You can check with pmud-utils package, in this package you have fblevel
utility, this is the base of the funtion used to change the lcd bright.
If you make fblevel work from pmud-utils, then lmud will also work.

Well, now you have a new version af lmud with lcd brightness support at

http://isadora.homelinux.net/lmud/lmud-0.02-fg-1.tar.gz

Now fading is more gradual (like in MacOS X) and now lmud checks the
light conditions every 40ms instead of 20ms (twice lighter to the system
:)
Well, enjoy

Sure, but when you are controlling the lcd bright based in the amount of
light, I don't see how can use this method without conflicts.

Well, I will provide the ability of enable/diseble this feature.
But I already manage the lcd bright, so you have to disable all of the
lcd features to use pmud (well in my case pmud is useless -Alu G4

Well, I have an Alu 15" 1.25Ghz with superdrive with Debian and MacOS X.
I don't use MacOS X (well, I start it once a week to apply security
patches or show how it looks to somebody who want to know more about
Macs :)
The instalation process is not as easy it can be, but part of that
dificult is understand the new architecture of Macs (this is my first
Mac)
So, you can install Debian, you will have a lot of fun doing that :)
Well right now my status with Linux/Debian/PowerBook is:

Distribution: Debian/Unstable using Gnome 2.4
Kernel: 2.6.1-ben1
USB: Working
USB cable to conect Motorola V60i CDMA phone to access Internet by
phone: Working
PCMCIA: Working (I have an 3com wifi card)
Fan Control: Working
Keyboard Backlight: Working
Automatic managment of Keyboard Backlight and LCD Bright with light
conditions: Working
DVD: Working
CD-R: Working
DVD-R: Works (but not tested)
Bluetooth: Working
CPU frequency change: working
Sound: Working

Well, you will be part of minority of minority, but everybody want's to
be member of a select club :
There are only a few things that I am missing:
Native Wifi support
3D aceleration (you can't see DVD or avis in full screen)
External monitor
Modem
Sleep support

If you can't live without of one of these things, well, you have MacOS
:)
I am very happy with this notebook, and my next linux notebook will be
another mac (I hope G5 or something better)

Well, not in my case, I use VLC, and I've already instaled xine, and
when I want to see a fullscreen avi, my radeon driver can't show all the

I am using radeonfb with XFree 4.3.0-0pre1v5

Is a little program that you can find in
http://isadora.homelinux.net/debian/powerbook/

If you have keyboard backlight in your powerbook, then you can turn on
the keyboard backlight and change the LCD bright acording to the light
conditions (with keyboard backlight you have 2 light sensors free, to
sense light conditions :)

Well, PowerBooks with keyboard backlight, have 2 light sensors (one in
each side, near the speakers), so you can sense the amount of light.
With these information, you can adjust keyboard backlight intensity and
LCD bright dinamically. For example, right now, I am in my bedroom with
no lights, so the keyboard backlight is at maximun level and LCD bright
is at level 3 :)

The program checks every 0.4 seconds and adjust LCD level automatically

Right now I am using fbdev and XFree86-4.3.0-0pre1.5.
My question is, what packages I need to get to use radeon instead of
fbdev in mi XF86config?
I just get xserver-xfree86-dri-trunk, drm-trunk-modules-src and
xlibmesa-gl1-dri-trunk from these site or I need to get and compile
XFree?

Well, you simple go to /usr/src/modules/mol and do make clean, make ,
make install and mol-modules compiles perfectly under 2.6.1-ben1 and
2.6.2-rc1-ben1
Then you need to execute depmod -a and you are ready to use mol (I
already tested with 2.6.2-rc1-ben1)

Yep, I have 2.4.22-ben1 also

Oh yes, for that level of compatibility yes, no problem at all.

Re: [PATCH] Latest patch to therm_adt7467

2004-01-27 Thread Federico Gamio
I have a question, in the following part of the patch code, you set the
limits, and you take care if you have 7460 or 7467.
My question is, is correct the last asignation (below write)?
I think you have to make an "if" (like a couples of lines before) to set
the correct values for 7467 or 7460, if not, you will set the values
from 7467.
I commentd out this line (I have an 7460 chipset) and everything works
great (fan starts at 60 and stops at 57).
I am missing something?

+ for (i = 0; i < 3; i++) {
+   th->initial_limits[i] = read_reg(th, LIMIT_REG[i]);
+
+   if (therm_type == ADT7467) {
+ th->limits[i] = default_limits7467[i] - limit_decrease;
+   } else {
+ /* Set CPU limit higher on 7460 to avoid powerdowns */
+ th->limits[i] = default_limits7460[i] - limit_decrease;
+   }
+   write_reg(th, LIMIT_REG[i], th->limits[i]);
+
+ /* set our limits to normal */
+   th->limits[i] = default_limits7467[i] - limit_decrease;

Sure you can (I am using one of this in my PowerBook).
The only thing you need to have is vfat support in your kernel, because
these little things como preformated in vfat.
In you x86 linux you have already vfat support compiled in.
You can check that, simple, mount in your x86 linux your stick and
execute the mount command, it will show you that the stick filesytem is
vfat.

Well, I have exactly the same machine, and right now have working the
next things:
1- X with 2d acceleration
2- Light sensors with keyboard backlight and lcd automatic adjust
3- pcmcia
4- fan control to cool the computer

Well I have exactly the same PowerBook.
To make X work you need xfree-dri-trunk and I installed xfree 4.3.99
I posted all that you need in the following link (you have the kernels
images also) http://isadora.homelinux.net/debian/powerbook/

Things that work:
- Xfree with 2d accel
- CD/DVD recorder
- pcmcia
- bluetooth (with Palm Tungsten T3 access with ppp)
- light sensors to adjust lcd bright and keyboard backlight
- Sound
- USB
- fan control

Why I don´t erase MacosX?
Airport don't work (I use an 3com wifi pcmcia card)
External monitor don't work
3d accel
sleep support

Federico

PowerBook G4 15" Alu

2004-02-27 Thread Federico Gamio
Hi,

I have an Apple PowerBook G4 15" 1.25 Ghz and I posted at

 http://isadora.homelinux.net/debian/powerboook/

all the stuff needed to make this toy work with Debian.
You can find there my last 2.6 kernel (images and source in Debian
Package), sources.list for apt, XF86Config for XFree, the last pbbuttons
with keyboard backlight support, etc, etc.
Things that don't work (at this time :)
- Modem
- Wifi (Airport Extreme)
- 3D Accel (Ati 9600)
- DVI Port (Dual Head or Mirroring)
- Sleep support
- SVideo out

Things that works:
- Ethernet
- USB
- PCMCIA
- Wifi (pcmcia 3com with Atmel Driver)
- FireWire (tested with iPod)
- CD-RW
- DVD-RW
- Audio
- Light Sensors
- Backlight keyboard
- Fan control
- Bluetooth (Palm Tungsten T3 connected by ppp)
- MacOSX (with Mol and network integration by tun interface :)

Forgot Something?

I posted all the files you need at
http://isadora.homelinux.net/debian/powerbook/
You need kernel 2.6.3 (you can find a .deb of my kernel, the 2.6.5 is
under testing, so use 2.6.3 :)
You need also to get my sources.list and you need to install the
following packages:

  xbase-clients 4.3.99pre10-2 miscellaneous X clients
  xfonts-100dpi 4.3.99pre10-2 100 dpi fonts for X
  xfonts-75dpi 4.3.99pre10-2 75 dpi fonts for X
  xfonts-base4.3.99pre10-2 standard fonts for X
  xfonts-scalable 4.3.99pre10-2 scalable fonts for X
  xfree86-common 4.3.99pre10-2 X Window System (XFree86) infrastructure
  xfs4.3.99pre10-2 X font server
  xlibmesa-gl4.3.99pre10-2 Mesa 3D graphics library [XFree86]
xlibs 4.3.99pre10-2 X Window System client libraries
  xlibs-data 4.3.99pre10-2 X Window System client data
xserver-common 4.3.99pre10-2 files and utilities common to all X
servers
  xserver-xfree86 4.3.99pre10-2 the XFree86 X server
xutils 4.3.99pre10-2 X Window System utility programs

 xserver-xfree86-dri-trunk The XFree86 X server [DRI trunk]

Download my XF86Config-4 and enjoy...
Another tip, in pbbuttonsd directory you have the latest
pbbuttonsd-server version (CVS), so you will have keyboard backlight
working.
Enjoy you PB!

1- format the new boot partition (ej. /dev/hda9)
2- move /boot to /boot.old
3- create dir /boot
4- put in fstab the boot partition (ej"/dev/hda9 /boot ext3
