Hi all, on the Debian Installer, in the Guided Partitioning screen it is shown: "The disk can be partitioned using one of several different schemes. If you are unsure, choose the first one." and then the first available option is: "All files in one partition (recommended for new users)" I propose to remove "(recommended for new users)" from the first option. My reasons are: - "(recommended for new users)" it's a redundancy because we just mentioned what to do if the user is unsure. - It's already recommended above to users that are stuck and don't know what to do, and not to all new users. - It's not easy to comply with this: "#. TRANSLATORS: This is a menu entry. Keep in under 55 columns/characters" - limitation at least on the text based installations. In 20 languages where i checked, 11 have more than 55 chars and at least one to be on the 55 chars limit inside the braces only says (recomended). It could be interesting by functional tasks:
- i18n
- l10n
- perhaps others you (and others) can identify with a different overview
- for countrys only together with guidelines, and mainly for languages
with
several contributors. To me it's not important to be a 'de facto' something,
workflow definition it's important. i hate receiving translations with
incomplete headers, not in utf-8, that msgfmt reports problems (i send some
to you like that 'in the old days', remember?

Guidelines - as I know you know better than me :) - could avoid duplicate work
and bad moods ('hostile takeovers', controvertial translations, ...).
Directions for begginers surely lead to more contributions (as long as Debian

Portuguese translations on your packages
Hello all, i am contacting you because Portuguese (pt) it's missing only a few messages to have all debconf questions translated for Debian 'lenny'. The affected packages are: arcboot; egroupware; plptools; radioclk and debian-edu-install. As it is an official release it would be great to provide our Portuguese speaking users the experience to use Debian with all the installation questions on their native language. I believe all of the remaining messages for 'Lenny' are already submitted to the BTS. If you guys are willing to make one last effort to make this possible i kindly ask you to include the translation updates in your packages. I believe the release team does not block l10n updates if contacted by the maintainers. That the script is necessary and works is demonstrated below: both languages I tested it on (Finnish and Brazilian) have multiple errors! See below for annotated examples. For XML-based translations the risk is a lot lower as doc-check does show individual changes, but if there is demand it should not be too hard to modify the script to also support .xml files. Anyway: all translators using PO files, please run the new script for your language and check its output! When it shows problems, I strongly advise to also carefully check the surrounding text. It would be great if the checks could be done ASAP as I'm planning a new upload as soon as the Spanish translation is completed (currently missing two files). loosing ~150 translated messages per language on the manual
Hi all, i just noticed that lots (~150?) of messages are marked as fuzzy on the installation manual due to a change from 'debian' to '&debian;'. If the word debian is worth being replaced for a variable with the same content i suggest: - leave it for the next release - or even better: - make the change and don't mark the messages as fuzzy. The result will be the same, right? We are near a release and i don't see how losing so many messages/paragraphs of translated text is worth this change. Until this is fixed we had a Portuguese manual fully translated for years that now is a piece of...text with lot's of unstranslated text. I suspect other languages suffered from the same issue. From my side i will wait for this being fixed. After I will continue to work on the manual again. Indeed, the pt/pt_PT/pt_BR it's an annoying issue, so as a Portuguese user and translator i will share my thoughts and give away my 2 "cêntimos" on the subject. Portuguese as spoken/written in Portugal do share some small but undeniable differences. Of course I understand (>90%) Portuguese from Brazil but to be honest it doesn't sounds correct to me. I believe the other way, the feeling it's the same. It's not an historical/colonial/whatever issue. I see having these 2 variations not a loss for the users nor for the Debian Project. In my opinion i see that as an quality achievement in the way users can get the translation they understand better (or even totally) and feel more comfortable. pt_BR has a great team and it's in great shape, pt_PT has waay less translations. Congratulations and a big thank you for the pt_BR team. On /etc/environment I have LANGUAGE="pt:pt_BR:en_GB:en" (default installation?) which provides pt_BR as a callback for missing pt_PT translations. Are we doubling the effort needed for translations? Undeniable. Well, Yes and No. Yes if translation it's for Portuguese, and No if we are talking about pt_PT/pt_BR. Do I regret it? Nope. To be honest, at this moment, i believe only l10n-Portuguese should be splitted. The Portuguese translators are very lazy and don't contribute often, but when/if they contribute the mailing list becomes "tutti-frutti". The benefit would be separate, and clear archives. ;-) I hear you talking, but what about wikipedia? They have only Portuguese and assume that for both languages! Yes, sure.
