Jake,

Thanks much for the help offer. I finished the bracing for the keel yesterday.
This morning I head to the yard (if I can find it in this fog…) and we lift the
hull off and move it into the shed. The yard has not really done this before so
I keep showing them pictures of your hull sans keel and saying “we can do this…"

Pictures of the keel bracing just posted in my sporadically updated blog.

Hi,

I thought I would pass along that WestMarine is having a one day 40% off bulk
rope sale tomorrow January 23. This is good both in store and online. Good

Dave, please take lots of photos, I, for one, am hoping to use your blog as a
"how to" to do the same for my boat...and no one around here has ever even
attempted to lift a boat off its keel.

Burt,

I’m not sure what model C&C you have but the bolts on my 37’ are two sizes,
with the smaller one (keel bolt) directly under the mast. I’m fairly certain
that two different torque values may be called for. I haven’t even measured
them yet but tomorrow I start building a cradle/support in advance of lifting
the hull off of the keel (and removing the rudder) prior to moving the the hull
into the shed for painting. I won’t be tightening the keel until sometime next
late spring but would be interested in what you find when re-torqueing yours if
you drop the keel.

Jake Brodersen (C&C 35 MKIII) on the list has done this and he may be a good
source of info. I’ve seen the pictures of his keel and the forward bolt is
extremely long. Very, very long...

Good luck.

It doesn’t look like one. It almost looks like it could be a ground point but

That is total BS. Not The intent of the ruling at all.

http://www.phrfne.org/page/handicapping/handicap_adjustments

No sprit on the C&C, it's to heavy in my opinion to benefit from a sprint. The
faster the boat the better the AW angel so the A-kite can get out in clear air
from the main. That's a big source of controversy though I could be wrong.
The 34r serve me well down wind. Up wind tougher game. The IMX has a 20% sprit
and a 3sec Credit, d/l is around 165. I'm probably going to lose that 3sec
credit with the new rules proposed for next year. It was 1st at the ONE against
all A-boat last year in D2.

That was definitely not a 30-2 (no folding gate in the transom), I'd say the ID

The new 30s are a rich man's toy. If anyone in Annapolis wants to write a
check for $150k to buy one I'll bring the beer! I hope they sell hundreds,
but I'm not betting on it. McConahay just announced a 30, plus there are
Farrs and Seascapes, just to name a few, to fragment a small market. Then
there is the J monster.

Most people start reading at the beginning of the email and ignore anything
below the senders’ signature.

It is just a friendly note asking for a donation to keep the email list free
and take some of the financial burden off me.

To those that don’t know – I have paid for the hosting, domain name, etc.
since 2006. The list is not sponsored by any outside party. Like everything
else, prices go up every year and each increase cuts into my fixed income.

Your help is always appreciated.

So, I got a little further towards removing the hull today but no joy at the
end of the day.

We were held up trying to removed the bolts holding the quadrant on due to
standard stainless bolts in aluminum thread issues. Once we got that sorted out
near the end of the day we found that we couldn’t drop the rudder shaft.

We loosened the two set screws (bolts really…) and tried to unscrew the
stainless steel cap at the top of the shaft in the cockpit sole with the
thought that this is what holds the assembly in place. We didn’t have much luck
with that initially and started in on the “don’t force it, get a bigger rock!”
theory of mechanics. We have unscrewed it a bit but I’d like to make sure that
I am moving in the right direction. And not totally f’ing things up as is my
wont.

So my question to list is: Am I correct in thinking that the cap is screwed on?
Has anyone done this on a circa early 80’s C&C rudder shaft?

Cheers,

Not sure I would say that this particular boat is in the realm of racer/cruiser
that our old C&C’s were. It is used as a racer/daysailer only. Very optimized
for racing and extremely well equipped and crewed. Their team has raced
together for a number of years and are very good. Owned by friends of mine.
They finally got enough wind today to do well against the Farr 280’s and are
expecting a good day tomorrow too.

That was definitely not a 30-2 (no folding gate in the transom), I'd say the ID
as a 29-1 is correct.

The new 30s are a rich man's toy. If anyone in Annapolis wants to write a
check for $150k to buy one I'll bring the beer! I hope they sell hundreds, but
I'm not betting on it. McConahay just announced a 30, plus there are Farrs and

Dave,

The cap (donut) in the cockpit hold the rudder shaft in the boat. There are
two set screws that must be loosened first. Turning it counterclockwise
will lower the rudder. It's a lot easier to do without any tension on the
rudder shaft. I use a small hydraulic jack and some timbers to take the
pressure off.

The quadrant bolts can be a bear. I've had my rudder out three times now.
Anti-seize is a wonderful thing.

After removing the bolts holding the cap, check to make sure there aren't set
screws inside the threaded holes. The cap should unscrew easily. My shaft has a
threaded hole in which I can screw in an eye bolt. It allows me to attach a
line to the shaft for support, while adjusting the cap.

I see that shit as typical code generated by the
dumb phones people use, 'cause they're "mobile"
and must respond to the list on their 'device'
and probably outside the office. For us old guys,
it is assumed that list response is best done
during office hours at your desktop machine and
on company time. :) sorry retired guys and other unnamed layabouts Wally

It's hard to weed your question out of all the
nested quotes, but you may just have the wrong
keyboard selected on your computer. I normally
just see that weird stuff in people's quotes,
and I'm set to Canadian English/US standard. I think.

Is everybody else getting a bunch of symbols in
their emails? The one below has an - a with a
carot on top, followed by a euro sign and a
trademark symbol and a small s - all in the
place that a single quote should be.

Not sure I would say that this particular boat
is in the realm of racer/cruiser that our old
C&C’s were. It is us used as a
racer/daysailer only. Very optimized for racing
and extremely well equipped and crewed. Their
team has raced together for a number of years
and are very good. Owned by friends of mine.
They finally got enough wind today to do well
against the Farr 280’s and are expecting a good day tomorrow tw too.

Wow, the J-122, a racer/crusier like C&C used to
stand for, is doing well against the all carbon sport boats.  Just sayin.

Well the C&C 30 One Design has not been doing
well.   To be fair, the driver is an amateur
up against some pros and he has beaten some Farr
280's on time but not on handicap.  See current

I passed on the comments below to an old sailing buddy of mine who lives in
Kingston simply as an FYI. He responded as follows:

"As a city resident, I agree with the city hall moves so far. Instead of
writing to politicians, tell your friends to send money!”

Hi Richard,

I'm not sure how effective it might be, but dropping a quick email to the Mayor
and the seven councillors who voted against the motion to acquire the property
from the Federal government upon which the museum sits would be greatly
appreciated. I think it is important to remind them that the Marine Museum of
the Great Lakes at Kingston has a much broader constituency than just Kingston.
Emails from far afield might emphasise that. The New Age of Sail exhibit, the
founding of the Canadian Sailing Hall of Fame, and the preservation of the
history of recreational sailing in Canada and the Great Lakes are all
initiatives in which the Marine Museum has been involved. Just letting them
know that "the whole world is watching" might be very beneficial!

Harry,

Pdfs of all drawings can be obtained from the Museum Curator, Sandrena Raymond,
at (cura...@marmuseum.ca ). Let's hope that the
drawings will still be available for many years to come. However, all Canadians
should drop a note to their Conservative MPs, if they want to help.
