Yeah I second shipping a boat. Up here in Ontario there are lots of C&C 25s

sell for a lot less. I sold my own Mirage 24 (a C&C design) for $3700 and I

Stus-List C&C 24 Dauphin Island Race Results

2013-04-29 Thread ok
I've been sailing my new 1978 C&C 24 in Mobile Bay, Beer Can races each week
since this season started. So far I've been doing a lot better than my
previous boat, usually placing around 4th-8th. This weekend we had our big
regatta, the Dauphin Island Race. I did fairly well placing 2nd in my class
and 3rd in fleet. A light air run on the start got me ahead of the big pack
into clean air, which quickly flipped 180 degrees into a close reach all the
way to the finish. Passed a lot of big and fast boats. My C&C 24 points so
well! Pretty happy with my little boat right now.

Link to results here:
http://55thdauphinislandrace.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/04/2013_DI_PortsNonSpinResults.pdf

My boat is class F, East Wind

Thanks for the racing tips I got earlier from this list!

I think we usually refer to this product as "marine plywood," meaning it has

Re: Stus-List 35/3 on a lift?

2013-04-29 Thread Gary Nylander
The guys in Texas (and others) use Hydro lifts to get their boats almost out of
the water all the time. The J-80 I raced on for a couple of years had this when
he was in Texas. Doesn't seem to be a problem - it would be like having your
boat in a travel lift.

Look at Annapolis Yacht Club's yard. There are plenty of dry sailed boats
there. The only difference is they are on trailers which support the keel and
yours would be just hanging there, but with a bunch of big bolts. and the
dry sailed boats are hoisted in and out every week. We dry sailed the J-80 for
two years - out and in every week with a crane and a single strap. Going to do
the same with a J-24 this year.

On a friend's boat equipped with Spinlocks we've discovered that we can stop a

I would suspect the cams. You can easily inspect them for wear. I've had to
replace the cams several times. When you buy the cam, the spring is included
since it's part of the assembly.
You might also inspect the bottom plate, but it seems to wear less, and it not
as critical.

Stus-List fiberglass board scrap

2013-04-29 Thread Frederick G Street
Hey -- does anyone on the list have a small (5" x 5") scrap of 3/8" thick
fiberglass board left over from projects that they'd be willing to send/sell to
me? I'm replacing the stern light with an LED fixture, and the cutout for the
old one is huge; I'd like to patch it before I install the new light; also the
new screws have nothing to bite into. I can order a 12" x 12" piece from
McMaster-Carr, but if there are scraps available, I'd rather go that route.

BTW, this past weekend I replaced the old below-deck "teardrop" bow lights with
new LED fittings from SeaDog (part number 400080-1) -- a direct replacement for
size with the old ones, and they're super-bright, as well as USCG-approved.
Now I just need to get the stern light replaced and I'm good to go with nav
lights.

Fred: It would be easier to make that scrap up yourself..pick up some

Hey -- does anyone on the list have a small (5" x 5") scrap of 3/8" thick
fiberglass board left over from projects that they'd be willing to send/sell
to me? I'm replacing the stern light with an LED fixture, and the cutout
for the old one is huge; I'd like to patch it before I install the new
light; also the new screws have nothing to bite into. I can order a 12" x
12" piece from McMaster-Carr, but if there are scraps available, I'd rather
go that route.

BTW, this past weekend I replaced the old below-deck "teardrop" bow lights
with new LED fittings from SeaDog (part
number 400080-1) -- a direct replacement for size with the old
ones, and they're super-bright, as well as USCG-approved. Now I just need
to get the stern light replaced and I'm good to go with nav lights.

Stus-List 35/3 on a lift?

2013-04-29 Thread Kim Brown

Joel
Dry sailing is certainly viewed as a plus here. You can remove the bottom
paint and spend quality time wet fairing and sanding. Only caution based on
lifts in this area is to be sure the lift is drops deep enough. Depending on
style etc you'll lose the equivalent of 6" or so of water depth. So be sure
it'll work for you at low tide lest you find yourself clunking the cross
member in your comings and goings. It is not like you can 'heel the boat'
to get away from the dock if the tide is challenging and you are on a
lift...

Re: Stus-List fiberglass board scrap

2013-04-29 Thread Rick Brass
Fred;

Send me your mailing address off list and I will mail you one of the 5x8
sections of fiberglass that I saved when I put larger access panels into the
cockpit side of my transom. It’s only about ¼” thick, but it does have Smoke
White gelcoat on one side.

When I redid the outside of the transom, I relocated the stern light using a
new fixture and an LED bulb purchased from Dr. LED. I put a layer of glass
on the inside of the old hole and filled and faired with thickened epoxy.
Might that not be easier than scarfing in a section of glass?

I already replaced the bulbs in my “teardrop” nav lights with red and green
LEDs made for that purpose. I forget what those are – a type 60 or type 90
bulb – but they were not commonly available. My current usage is pretty low,
but last weekend I noticed that the chrome on the old “teardrops” is
starting to turn to rust stains after 37 years. My first question, when I
thought about replacing the fixtures, was the availability of a light that
was the same size and shape. Thanks for doing the research for me.

I'm sorry to hear that. When my wife and I were newlyweds, we had a house that
we rented, 3BR, 20 acres and a dock on Blackhole Creek. We moved in in November
and I was transferred to Rochester, NY in May. Never spent a summer there.
There is a house for sale on Blackhole creek now, but it would have to be
demolished and the dock would have to be extended to get the depth necessary,
but it's a great location.

I would suspect the cams. You can easily inspect them for wear. I've had to
replace the cams several times. When you buy the cam, the spring is included
since it's part of the assembly.

You might also inspect the bottom plate, but it seems to wear less, and it
not as critical.

Sander, I looked at the pictures and I'm amazed you can imagine what the
finished boat would ever look like.
Everything's been removed! Where's the toe rail? There must be a barrel of nuts
and bolts somewhere covered in caulk.
It would be easier to build a new boat from scratch than tackle that old hulk.

Re: Stus-List C&C 24 Dauphin Island Race Results

2013-04-29 Thread dwight veinot
I never found the C&C 24 to be a particularly good pointer, but in light air
the boat is pretty good for her number. The tack angle will vary depending
on wind strength and headsail but in light air with a good No. 1 headsail
maybe close to 100 degrees.

Good job Orren!

Light air is our advantage - I was asked once if I was motoring when passing

Since you say that your boat points well: can you tell what is your tacking
angle in relatively flat water in about 10knts of true wind? (no pinching)

Re: Stus-List Security question

2013-04-29 Thread Colin Kilgour
I rarely lock my boat, but if I'm away for an extended time, I will.
The lazarette is always unlocked and the anchor is always in the
roller (or on the bottom of the ocean).

Also, if I'm in dodgier places, I'd lock it. Annapolis during October
(see Joe's comment) or certain poorer Caribbean anchorages where the
locals might be tempted . I wouldn't include St. Martin in that list
as I would view SXM as totally safe. Places like Wallilabou in St.
Vincent, or Castries or Soufriere in St. Lucia come to mind in this
regard.

Cheers
Colin

Stus-List 2013 West Coast Rendezvous

2013-04-29 Thread Jim Watts
This is the letter that went to all the West Coast C&C owners we have in
our database, sorry if it's duplicated...for those new to the west coast
group, pay attention, dammit.

A warm spring welcome to our fellow C&C owners! We have had some queries
already regarding the 2013 C&C Rendezvous, so here’s the lowdown.

The 2013 Rendezvous will have a different format this year, for several
reasons. The core organizers of the last few rdv’s are stepping down for
this year to have more time on our boats. Frank & Deanna, on
*Felicity,*will be up in the Broughtons and/or Desolation for much of
the summer,
while Anne and Jim, on *Paradigm Shift*, are planning a 3-month
circumnavigation of Vancouver Island. Margaret Ketchen, on *Cardhu*, will
help with the organizing for a less structured event and we hope to have
other volunteers to make the fun happen. We are asking for more
participation from everyone for this year’s event to be even better.

There will be no formal pre-registration with the organizers this year, but
*each boat* *will have to be registered with the marina* to have their
space reserved. All the information you need to do this is on the web site:
http://members.shaw.ca/cncrdv/ There will be event registration at the dock
with a nominal fee to cover facilities rental.

Yacht Sales West is not going to be sponsoring the *Friday night wine meet
& greet* this year due to other obligations, so it’s going to be BYOB plus
an appie to share with the crowd.

As a result of the new lean team, there will be *no formal dinner* this
year on Saturday night, but the Pavilion will be available for those who
want to join in a pot luck dessert frenzy. The marina store has many
delicious things to choose from if you don’t want to make *crepes Suzette
au beurre d’orange* on board. Everyone is invited to arrive at the pavilion
at 7:30 PM for the annual announcements and prize draws.

We hope to have volunteers to run some fun events like the blindfold
dinghy races, and one or two to organize a Tech Talk. Please let us know if
you’d like to be involved.

We’re going to miss you guys!

2013-04-29 Thread Marek Fluder
Orren,

Tacking angle would be the difference between compass bearings on opposite
tacks when close hauled.
Make sure you have a decent speed and power (no pinching) on one tack -
take compass bearing, tack and measure the bearing again once you achieve
decent speed and power and all is stable. Calculate the difference. You
should be in the neighbourhood of 100 as Dwight have mentioned.
If you will get below 100 I'll get jealous :)

On a friend's boat equipped with Spinlocks we've discovered that we can stop
a lot of slippage by pushing down on the cam with your finger (making it
engage the line more forcefully) as you close the lever. Seems to make a big
difference.

I would suspect the cams. You can easily inspect them for wear. I've had to
replace the cams several times. When you buy the cam, the spring is included
since it's part of the assembly.

You might also inspect the bottom plate, but it seems to wear less, and it
not as critical.

John,

Chances are it's the springs, but might as well replace both. Spinlock sells
a wealth of replacement parts that are pretty easy to install.

All the best,

Re: Stus-List Went to see the 25 for myself

2013-04-29 Thread Sander van der Moolen
Hi Chuck,

I did see the toe rails, they're under a rack where the mast is also stored.
I didn't lie when I said everything was removed :)
Just counting the number of screw holes in the deck would be a painstaking
task lol.

On a more serious note though, the more I think about the poor shape this
boat is in, the more I want to punch the former owner on the nose.
Just, why?? Why leave a boat like this? :(

Sander

Sander, I looked at the pictures and I'm amazed you can imagine what the
finished boat would ever look like.
Everything's been removed! Where's the toe rail? There must be a barrel of
nuts and bolts somewhere covered in caulk.
It would be easier to build a new boat from scratch than tackle that old
hulk.

Okay, just to make the topic complete, click the link below to download a
zip file with pictures.
This is only the hull, I didn't take pictures of the rest of it.
