On a friend's boat equipped with Spinlocks we've discovered that we can stop
a lot of slippage by pushing down on the cam with your finger (making it
engage the line more forcefully) as you close the lever. Seems to make a big
difference.

I would suspect the cams. You can easily inspect them for wear. I've had to
replace the cams several times. When you buy the cam, the spring is included
since it's part of the assembly.

You might also inspect the bottom plate, but it seems to wear less, and it
not as critical.

Chances are it's the springs, but might as well replace both. Spinlock sells
a wealth of replacement parts that are pretty easy to install.
