Many people have tried to get sound working with ubuntu/feisty and the new santa rosa macbook pro and have failed. Their details are at: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=474144 I hope the alsa fix for this will be relatively easy. As anyone reading the alsa list would agree, having sound is kind of important! Steffen's message (found in gmane) was nice enough to include the lspci details. [Alsa-user] MP#, anyone?
Does anybody have a clue as to where a copy of the ONE FILE "libmp3lame.so" can be downloaded? I searched using Google and "Ask Jeeves", and all I get is other people posting the same query, but no responses posted which provide the answer. These include people claiming to be UIX Admins, and the closest I get to answers are references to where one can download an entire build of a new application, and even those usually have substitute files instead! If so many people want the file, it must exist somewhere to be downloaded. The intended application is Audacity which is built into Mandrake 10.0. Brian
[Alsa-user] sound in the Debian distro
Having gotten the sound-application "Audacity" running well in Mandrake, FC3, and SUSE, I decided to try getting sound running in Debian. I am using the version R4 (kernel 2.2. called "Woody"), and during the install, used "tasksel" for the big-picture and "dselect" for the fine-tuning parts. I saw the ALSA modules, and selected everything that had "sound" or "ALSA" mentioned. Although I want to get Audacity with this distro, I had focused on getting basic "sound capabilities" running first. However, when the system started, right away it states "sound server could not be started". It mentions something about "soundcore.o" not being found. Running "sndconfig" does not find any "sound modules" at all. The system startup messages also state that the "/dev/dsp" is not found. The hardware is one of those Compaq boxes that have been working so well for me with everything else, and the soundcard is a brand new PCI version. The "lspci" command shows that it finds the soundcard itself at "00:f0". So, it looks like the hardware is located, and the software install did not go far enough to provide the necessary modules. Does this seem to be a reasonable assessment? Reinstalling the system got the same results. I would like to know hat it takes to get some basic sound capabilities with this release. I particularly suspect the installation procedure itself, although I cannot determine what I may have wrong with it. [Alsa-user] Musix in English, anyone?
Hey, There is a really interesting-looking distro called "Musix". Problem is, it seems to have a "split personality" with half of its prompts in Spanish and the other half (or so) in English. GREAT features, but the language factor makes it looks more than a little "schizoid". Also, the key-mapping is a mess, making the user substitute for punctuation characters at almost every turn. Even "ls /dev/hda" has to be entered using alternate key-maps. What a mess ... Anyone know of a location that has this release in "just" one language or the other? Anyone know where to find a "whitepaper" or similar document on the Ensoniq 5880? It is a PCI-based soundcard (yes, I know that Ensoniq was acquired by Creative Technologies in 1997). [Alsa-user] alsaplayer problem (high speed, no sound)
Hi, I've been trying to use alsaplayer but haven't had much success. First off, I can't get the gui interface to load a file, I click on it in the gtk file selector but it doesn't try to play it. However, I can specify the filename on the command line, in which case it loads the file and tries to play it. This is where I come to the second problem. I've only tried this with mp3 files, but in that case it plays the file at high speed and doesn't produce any sound. I've also tried using the cdda plugin (my main reason for wanting to use alsaplayer) and the same thing seems to happen - high speed and no sound. aplay sounds fine and the mp3 file plays fine with mpg123. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I compiled with the -DDEBUG and it is reading the file, in that I see a back-to-back stream of: play frame success playing frame 4608 -> 4608 I'm running 2.2.17 with alsa 0.5.9. I've tried the latest alsaplayer sources and 0.99.50 as well. [Alsa-user] No sound! Ubuntu 8.10 and SI7012
Good morning: I have a NEC Versa A2200 that I bought in Hong Kong in the summer of 2007. I recently dorked-up the Windows XP operating system and decided to run Ubuntu. Now, exactly what kind of help? You tell us nothing about your system except that is some unit purchased in Hong Kong and it used to run windows. I could tell you to throw it away, but you would probably not find that helpful. (NEC seems to have abandoned it already-- it is 4 years old) If however you were to tell us what kind of soundcard it had-- run lspci For example on my system reports for the audio 00:1f.5 Multimedia audio controller: Intel Corporation 82801DB/DBL/DBM (ICH4/ICH4-L/ICH4-M) AC'97 Audio Controller (rev 02) we might have a chance of figuring out what you have and giving you advice. Also show us what is in /etc/modprode.conf or in one of the /etc/modprobe.d/* files which might have something to do with audio. Also if you run alsamixer in a terminal window, do you get anything? Are the sliders slid up if there is something. Finally, you could buy a usb sound card and use that instead. There are some pretty cheap ones and most tend to work with linux usb sound driver.

Hi, I've tried just about everything to get ens1371 modules to install on my debian system. [Alsa-user] Alsa 0.9.x beta and LM8.2
I need to use the 0.9 beta drivers for my card (Delta 66) as it is multi-channel and not handled properly by the 0.5.x set which are included in the Mandrake 8.2 distro. I had these working in 8.1, but under 8.2 on running configure for the driver I get: checking for kernel version... expr: syntax error expr: syntax error expr: syntax error failed (probably missing /usr/src/linux/include/linux/version.h) I checked the alsa-user archives and found a reference to this problem, but no suggestion of how to fix it. Needless to say, version.h is not missing: -rw-r--r--1 root root 384 Mar 15 13:35 /usr/src/linux/include/linux/version.h I have the kernel sources and headers installed as required, but don't have the coding knowledge to work out what is wrong with the way configure is trying to get the version info. I've tried this with 0.9.10, .12, and rc1 - same result every time. [Alsa-user] is ice1712 missing from rc1?
I have finally managed to make everything configure and compile on Mandrake 8.2, but having run all the steps up to modprobe successfully, modprobe snd-ice1712 can't find the module. Neither can I! I am using a Delta 66 card. INSTALL tells me to use snd-ice1712. My modules.conf looks like this: # ALSA native device support alias char-major-116 snd options snd snd_major=116 snd_cards_limit=1 alias snd-card-0 snd-ice1712 # OSS/Free setup alias char-major-14 soundcore alias sound-slot-0 snd-card-0 alias sound-service-0-12 snd-pcm-oss but: $ modprobe snd-ice1712 modprobe: Can't locate module snd-ice1712 $ ls -R /lib/modules/2.4.18-6mdk/kernel/ | grep ice1712 also finds nothing. Shouldn't there be an ice1712.o somewhere in there? I tried the recommended: "./configure --with-debug=detect, make clean, make" - no useful messages in /var/log/messages Can anyone suggest how to further diagnose this, or spot what I have screwed up? Can't see this documented in the INSTALL file! Maybe I'm blind. The other thing I had to do to make it work was to switch off DEVFS. I found lots of modules but not ice1712. Anyway, fortunately there was a slightly more useful reply to a previous post which put me on the right track - I needed the --with-cards option to configure. Just checked and there is the System.map in the src directory, but the procedure still worked. I found that the messages at boot regarding all the unresolved symbols were a result of using the --with-cards option in configure. At one stage that seemed to be necessary, but it turned out that switching off devfs was the most important step in getting it going. In summary then: 1. Switch off devfs 2. [Alsa-user] Problem with intel8x0 driver -- Dell Precision 530
Hey all, I've got a problem that I'm hoping someone has figured out. I'm attempting to get the sound to work on a Dell Precision 530 workstation that has an Intel 860 chipset with an AD 1885 sound chip. The intel8x0 driver loads fine, but all I get out of the speakers is a low-volume "thump". It appears that this exact question was asked before, according to the archives: (http://www.geocrawler.com/archives/3/12350/2002/2/150/7871743/) ...but I didn't see a response from anyone. Interestingly, I was having problems with the built-in kernel 810 driver until I upgraded to v.2.4.18. The 2.4.18 changelog contains a mysterious line that says only this: - i810 sound driver update (Doug Ledford) ...whatever Doug did, it seems it fixed the problem on the 860 sound chipset. After a good amount of tinkering, I have alsa doing most of what I want. I'm using a MidiSport 1x1 and devfs. The modules are loading, pmidi is displaying the MidiSport and playing MIDI files through it just fine, so I presume output through /dev/snd/seq is working. cat /dev/snd/midiC0D0 displays approrpriate "garbage" characters, but cat /dev/snd/seq does nothing. I saw a similar question in the list archives, but did not see a response. [Alsa-user] Can't get alsa to make a peep
I'm at wit's end trying to get my Debian laptop running ALSA to make any noise at all. Well, it makes the system beep sound just fine, but nothing else. To start with, when I run "aplay /usr/share/sounds/pop.wav", I get: aplay: main:447: audio open error: No such file or directory I'm running kernel 2.4.19 with packages 'alsa-modules-2.4.19-686', 'alsa-base', 'alsa-utils', 'alsa-xmms', and 'alsaconf' installed. I followed the 'Installing and Configuring ALSA Sound Modules in Debian HOWTO' on LinuxOrbit.com; I edited /etc/alsa/alsa-base.conf to set startosslayer=true, and I edited /etc/modutils/alsa to configure my sound layer properly. (I'm using a Dell Latitude CPi D266XT laptop with a CS4237B chip in it, so I'm using the cs4236 driver.) I even removed 'snd_' from the names of the modules to fix the 'option not found' error messages. So as far as I know I have everything all configured okay... but obviously I don't! I'm running a brand-new installation of Debian which I updated to 'testing' (sarge). The only significant thing I did to it was to install KDE 3.1, but it's my understanding that arts isn't even available for KDE 3.1 yet, so arts can't be getting in the way. 'lsmod' reports that modules 'snd' and 'sndcore' are loaded, but it doesn't show any other sound-related modules. I've scoured mailing lists and web sites and I can't find any clue why this might not be working. I'm really frustrated with it by now and I could use any tips anyone might have on how to fix it. And it's not like this system could have a lot of cruft getting in the way and fouling stuff up; like I said, it's a fresh Debian installation, and I purposefully didn't install any other sound stuff because I didn't want it to interfere with alsa. [Alsa-user] Detailed instructions for setting up alsa?
I still can't get alsa to work, though I'm doing everything I think I'm supposed to be doing. Can someone please point me to detailed and specific instructions for how to set up and use alsa from the packages on a Debian Linux system? Like, *exactly* what modules do I have to have present, and how do I verify they're loaded and working properly? And what's the simplest way to test whether it's working, without having to rely on something that itself might not be configured properly (like xmms)? I've read the 'Installing and Configuring ALSA Sound Modules HOWTO,' but all it says is how to set up /etc/modules/alsa and it doesn't explain what the lines in that file are for or how to make sure they're working. --- This SF.NET email is sponsored by: SourceForge Enterprise Edition + IBM + LinuxWorld = Something 2 See! http://www.vasoftware.com ___ Alsa-user mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/alsa-user
Re: [Alsa-user] Detailed instructions for setting up alsa?
Thank you very much for the tips, but it looks like the alsa modules still aren't working properly. The latter let you compile an alsa-modules-2.4.xx for your specific kernel. I have libasound2, alsa-utils, alsa-base, and alsa-modules-2.4.19-686 installed (since I'm also using kernel-image-2.4.19-686). lsmod will show you if snd-xxx modules are present. They are normally automatically loaded when booting, 'lsmod' doesn't show any sound-related modules loaded after boot, not 'snd' or 'sndcore' or anything else that looks like it deals with audio -- BUT, then I try running 'aplay /usr/share/sounds/pop.wav' and I get the error 'aplay: main:447: audio open error: No such file or directory', and then I run 'lsmod' again and now it lists that modules 'snd' and 'soundcore' are loaded. I do have the following lines in /etc/alsa/modutils/0.9, which is linked to from /etc/modutils/alsa, and the lines also appear in /etc/modules.conf (because I ran update-modules): alias char-major-116 snd alias snd-card-0 snd-card-cs4236 alias char-major-14 soundcore alias sound-slot-0 snd-card-0 alias sound-service-0-0 snd-mixer-oss alias sound-service-0-1 snd-seq-oss alias sound-service-0-3 snd-pcm-oss alias sound-service-0-8 snd-seq-oss alias sound-service-0-12 snd-pcm-oss options snd major=116 cards_limit=1 device_mode=0660 device_gid=29 device_uid=0 options snd-card-cs4236 index=0 id=CARD_0 port=0x530 cport=0x210 mpu_port=0x220 fm_port=0x388 irq=5 mpu_irq=7 dma1=1 dma2=0 What I have is identical to what you said except that I removed 'snd_' from all the options. (I added my user account to the 'audio' group too, by the way.) Is it correct that the snd and soundcore modules should only be loading after I try to play a sound, and not at boot? And what does the 'aplay: main:447: audio open error: No such file or directory' error mean? I searched this mailing list but couldn't find anything conclusive on it. As recommended in another email I found, I ran '/usr/share/doc/alsa-base/examples/snddevices' to create all the required audio devices, and that ran successfully but had no effect on the problem. Use alsamixer for unmuting, then aplay (in alsa-utils). If aplay produces sound, it is ok. When I run 'alsamixer' I get this error: alsamixer: function snd_ctl_open failed for default: No such file or directory Being able to use old OSS only programs with alsa is a matter on itself... How do I know when a program is trying to use OSS instead of alsa? Currently, there is no complete automatic installation process for Debian. [Alsa-user] 'snddevices' isn't creating the necessary devices?
aplay says 'main:447: audio open error: No such file or directory' and amixer says 'Mixer attach default error: No such file or directory', so I'm suspecting that '/usr/share/doc/alsa-base/examples/snddevices' isn't actually being successful at creating the devices I need... It creates the directory '/dev/snd' which is a symbolic link to '/proc/asound/dev' which is empty. Should that be empty? If not, how do I give it what it needs? I edited 'snddevices' to change STATIC=0 to STATIC=1, then I ran it again. Now it creates a directory '/dev/snd' which contains 'seq', 'timer', and several files whose names start with 'pcm', 'midi', 'hw', and 'control'. But aplay still gives me the same 'no such file or directory' error, even when I run '/etc/init.d/alsa restart'. What devices need to exist, and why aren't they being created? [Alsa-user] static when recording from microphone
Hi, I've got a Compaq Presario 12XL505 laptop with a VT82C686 sound chip. Playing sound works fine. However, when I record sound using an external microphone, there is static recorded along with the sound. The microphone and microphone jack seem to be working fine, since there is no static when I have the microphone's input played immediately (i.e., when I change the Mic setting in the Playback view of alsamixer). The microphone also sounds fine when used on another computer. I've tried recording with different settings and different programs, and I even compiled a newer version of alsa-driver (1.0.24) using alsa-compile.sh, but the problem remains. Any suggestions? By the way, the output of alsa-info.sh (when using the ALSA drivers included in Debian's linux-image-2.6.32-5-686 package) is available at http://pastebin.com/jSRzJLrW Please let me know if you want any other information. Re: [Alsa-user] static when recording from microphone
The "static" is continuous additional noise, which I would describe as a low hum with an additional bouncing crackle. But I've posted a 300 kilobyte .wav file that I recorded in a quiet room: http://www.unc.edu/~bapike/alsa/hum.wav and spectra here (using two different horizontal scales): http://www.unc.edu/~bapike/alsa/spectrum-log.png http://www.unc.edu/~bapike/alsa/spectrum-linear.png and a zoomed-in picture of the waveform in audacity: http://www.unc.edu/~bapike/alsa/waveform.png Thanks, Brian Pike On Wed, 13 Jul 2011, Bill Unruh wrote: > On Wed, 13 Jul 2011, Brian Pike wrote: > >> Hi, >> I've got a Compaq Presario 12XL505 laptop with a VT82C686 sound chip. >> Playing sound works fine. [Alsa-user] ICE 1724 requires reboots
I've been pulling my hair out for a week chasing down an intermittentsound problem. I could usesome help on what to try next. I have a Vantec UGT-S110 sound card using the ICE1724 chip. On boot-up I either get good sound or none at all. If it doesn't work, nothing I can do will make it work. If it works, itworks fine until the next time I need to reboot. It seems to work on about 40% of the boots. I'm running this on Ubuntu 12.04 with all the latest maintenance. I'll include kernel information, etc, in the aadebug output later in this post. As a diagnostic, I uninstalled PulseAudio. This didn't alter the problem at all, so PA isn't part of the problem. For testing purpose, I use aplay and a known good .wav file. I've checked connections, replaced, speakers, etc., so I think those are pretty well out of the picture. I've reseated the card. One complication is my video card, which supports sound output via HDMI. I've blacklisted the appropriate module to make sure ALSA isn't trying to push sound out the wrong card. After blacklisting, "aplay -L" and "aplay -l" don't list the HDMI audio output, so I *think* that's out of the picture. Below are two listings of "aadebug" (a script I found in an ALSA troubleshooting FAQ). The first one was taken when the card works. The second one was taken when the card doesn't work. Most of the differences are in date stamps or interrupt counts, but the broken one also indicates that snd_seq_dummy is loaded. I don't know why that's loaded, or if it's a root cause or just a symptom. I have another one aadebug output that seems to show a failure when snd_seq_dummy wasn't loaded, though I'm wondering if that was a case of experimental error. I'm happy to supply other information if you tell me what you need. Does anyone have any suggestions or advice on what to try next? Thanks in advance for any help you can provide. I've spent way too many hours on this, and could use a hand. -Brian Martin aadebug when the sound works: ALSA Audio Debug v0.2.0 - Wed Feb 13 14:54:31 PST 2013 http://alsa.opensrc.org/aadebug http://www.gnu.org/licenses/agpl-3.0.txt Kernel Linux office 3.2.0-37-generic #58-Ubuntu SMP Thu Jan 24 15:28:10 UTC 2013 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux Advanced Linux Sound Architecture Driver Version 1.0.24. This card is mentioned in the change log for 1.0.18, which is prior to my version 1.0.25, so I assumed it was supported (ref: http://www.alsa-project.org/main/index.php/Changes_v1.0.18_v1.0.19#ICE1724_driver). [Alsa-user] Delta 44
Hi, I just bought an M Audio Delta 44 for recording music on my desktop at home, but can not seem to get any sound out of it. I bought this card because it sounded like it was supported by ALSA, so I am deeply discouraged that I haven't been able to get it working. I have tried installing envy24control because that seemed to be a popular recommendation on the ubuntu forums, and when I run speaker-test with this up (on the PCM Monitor tab) the level meters are actually lighting up. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!! [Alsa-user] enumerate MIDI devices
Hi all, I am hoping to get some guidance on how to properly use the information I get when I list MIDI devices. I'm tinkering with this code https://github.com/scgolang/midi/blob/d50a32b1725ae42044c84f02a53c69004926bd93/midi_linux.go#L94-L152 which seems to list MIDI devices ok. But if I prefer to use the RawMIDI API to actually connect to the device is this a reasonable way to formulate the device ID? https://github.com/scgolang/midi/blob/d50a32b1725ae42044c84f02a53c69004926bd93/midi_linux.go#L125 I'm guessing there is a better way to implement this, but I'm pretty new to the Sequencer API so I'm not sure what that better way might look like. Does it even make sense to use the Sequencer API to list devices, but then use the RawMIDI API to open, read, and write? The code I'm sharing is hopefully readable for C programmers despite the fact that it is Go. [Alsa-user] tracks "slow-w-w-w-w-wed down"
I am basically familiar with Audacity more than any other app. I want to be able to slow down playback of an audio track without altering the pitch. So far, I have used the "sox" utility with its "stretch effect" as an option. This yields "kinda-sorta the intended result", however the playback of the output file contains a rather irritating ring-modulation-like effect. I take it that such is an inherent result of the function's process although I am not enough of a physics expert to know for certain. Is there a means to achieve this slowdown without the distortion? I have in mind a means to make it easier to transcribe recordings of players who are doing "really-fast" playing, e.g. rock-guitar solos and so forth. [Alsa-user] HELP!! No Sound - Asus P4PE (Intel 845)
I've tried everything to no avail. My Asus P4PE (Intel 845 w/ AD1980) will not produce sound on my fully patched RedHat 9 system. Judging by the number of postings about this same subject without resolution, I am making the assumption that I am not alone. I've tried to use the default sound - No Luck. I've tried the alsa packages from FreshRPMs - No Luck. And, most recently, I've tried to build the source downloaded straight from alsa-project.org - No Luck. The sound modules appear to load fine, but there is no sound. I've tried plugging the speakers into the microphone jack and countless other suggestions from various postings. No luck. The same process that I am using for this board works fine on two other systems that I have which use VIA chipsets. Does anyone out there have this working? If so, please help the rest of us. [Alsa-user] ALC650 is out to eat your bass
I've got an Abit AT7 motherboard with RealTek ALC650 audio. It sounds okay with 5.1 speakers, but when I plug headphones in, it's piss: no bass at all. It seems like everything under 200Hz has been completely filtered from the left/right channels. The result is like some kind of a high-frequency skull drill. Exploring the alsamixer options, I tried disabling the center/bass output but there's no difference in the basic stereo output. Still no bass. /proc/asound/card0/ac97#0 shows a "Loudness" option which I suspect may be helpful if it's like "loudness" on old radios (basically a bass boost), but I can't find any corresponding mixer setting. ===START=== 0-0/0: Avance Logic ALC650 rev 0 Capabilities : DAC resolution : 20-bit ADC resolution : 18-bit 3D enhancement : Realtek 3D Stereo Enhancement Current setup Mic gain : +0dB [+0dB] POP path : pre 3D Sim. stereo : off 3D enhancement : off Loudness : off Mono output : MIX Mic select : Mic1 ADC/DAC loopback : off Extended ID : codec=0 rev=1 AMAP LDAC SDAC CDAC DSA=0 SPDIF DRA VRA Extended status : SPCV LDAC SDAC CDAC SPDIF=3/4 VRA PCM front DAC: 44100Hz PCM Surr DAC : 44100Hz PCM LFE DAC : 44100Hz PCM ADC : 48000Hz SPDIF Control: Consumer PCM Copyright Category=0x2 Generation=1 Rate=44.1kHz ===END=== Anyone know how to keep it from eating all the bass, or am I stuck on that? [Alsa-user] 2.6 kernel won't compile if sequencer is a module
I've found what I believe might be a bug in the Alsa code in the Linux 2.6.[0-3] kernel, or at least is a problem with the Makefile. The problem is that if (in 'make menuconfig') I specify that the sequencer should be a module, I get a bunch of errors when I try to make the kernel. If I say that the sequencer should be built-in, then compilation works fine. The particular option in question in .config is 'CONFIG_SND_SEQUENCER=m'. With that set, when I compile the kernel, I get a whole bunch of 'undefined reference' errors in sound/built-in.o. Changing that to 'CONFIG_SND_SEQUENCER=y' allows the kernel to compile cleanly. I'm setting it by using 'make menuconfig', which is supposed to prevent me from setting it to something it shouldn't be set to, right? A copy of my .config which causes the error is at: http://www.enchanter.net/linuxhelp/dot.config And a log of the failed compile is at: http://www.enchanter.net/linuxhelp/make.errors It's odd that the errors all involve functions named 'snd_opl3_...' I don't have any OPL3 settings in my .config file. Is this really a problem with the build process? Who should I report it to? Or is it something I'm doing wrong? --- SF.Net is sponsored by: Speed Start Your Linux Apps Now. Build and deploy apps & Web services for Linux with a free DVD software kit from IBM. [Alsa-user] Maudio Dio 2496 S/PDIF
All, Sorry to cross-post, but I have spent quite some time trying to figure this out (and a lot of googling too). I'm trying to setup the Maudio DiO 2496 using the S/PDIF Optical outputs...mainly I'm trying to get mythtv to work, but I"ve been unsuccessful with ALSA on this card for anything ranging from mythtv to mplayer to xine. If I just point to /dev/dsp it uses the OSS emulation and it works (even with the optical), but trying to specify the alsa drivers in mplayer or xine, I get anything ranging from no sound to errors on alsa_init. I've tried to play with the alsamixer commandline but I'm very confused by the options here. I've also used the envy24control with no good results. In addition, MythTV doesn't seem to allow me to specify anything like "ALSA:hw:0,0" or "ALSA:default" or really anything other than what's in the pulldown box on the frontend setup...so even if I can get xine or mplayer working from the commandline, I'm not quite sure what to do here. Can anyone help? The reason that I'm trying to use ALSA instead of the OSS emulation is that #1 I'm assuming the quality may be betterI'm currently getting some pops / clicks in mythtv using the OSS. And I am also trying to get the ac3 out to my receiver - which I'm not sure can be done with the OSS emulation. Thanks in advance! Brian --- SF.Net is sponsored by: Speed Start Your Linux Apps Now. [Alsa-user] maudio dio 2496 troubles
All, I'm still having problems with the maudio dio 2496. Has anyone been successful getting this card to work using native ALSA with the S/PDIF Optical outputs? I've tried many different things, but am unable to do this successfully. I'm trying to output to a stereo amp and do various things including playing a DVD via xine. Whenever I specify to use the alsa audio driver, I get no sound. I do see that something is happening b/c the amp has a LED that blinks showing something is happening on the optical interface. I've tried using other applications as well specifying hw:0,0 and plughw:0,0 also with no luck. I am not using any special .asoundrc file In some cases I've seen errors saying something like "sample rate not supported." but I'm not quite sure what to do about that. Xine doesn't give that error though, it just happily runs w/o any sound. Any help would be appreciated. [Alsa-user] ice1712 / envy24 problems - please help!
I have an MAudio Deltio DiO 2496 sound card that I'm trying to use for simple playback and I can't seem to get to the end of my problems. OSS emulation playback has pops / clicks. And I'm unable to get native ALSA to work in some programs. Is there any way to turn debugging on in the drivers? Whenever the software tries to initialize the sound card w/ the snd_pcm_hw_params the error "Invalid argument" Is returnedI have to admit that's very difficult to troubleshoot. I'd like to be able to see which parameter is failing so that I can either make changes to the software or perhaps create some .asoundrc that will fix the problem. Re: [Alsa-user] How do I get USB audio to work?
Thanks for those instructions. I didn't realize I had to set up USB audio as a second sound card. I did that, and rebooted to make sure the edits to modprobe.conf took hold; now 'alsamixer -c1' shows sliders fot USB audio, but I still can't get any sound out of it. What happens when you run "aplay -Dplughw:1 something.wav"? There is a delay of exactly as long as the file takes to play with '-Dplughw:0', then I get another shell prompt, as if the system thought the audio was playing, but there is only silence. It works fine with sound card 0 (built-in audio), but sound card 1 (USB audio) generates only silence. I figured out how to change the output device in XMMS, but the USB speakers still aren't making any sound, and "aplay -Dplughw:1 /usr/share/sounds/alsa/test.wav" still pauses for a few seconds before returning without errors. [Alsa-user] Routing the Emu10k1 wavetable to the rear speakers
I read somewhere that the rear output DACs on my SBLive Value are superior to the front ones, so my monitors are connected to the rear out. I'm using qsynth with jack when i'm focusing on audio, but it seemslike a shame to have that wave table and whopping 13megs of DRAM just sitting there... It would be nice to asfxload some small GM soundfont so i can tinker with ditties without having to run jack ( witch is inconvinient when i'm compiling, or have 13 firefox windows and some open office going on ). It seems there should be some way to route the synth channel to the rear speakers... maybe with an .asoundrc file? has anybody done this? [Alsa-user] sb live dma buffer alloc failure?
forgive me for cross-posting, but i've found references to this problem on both lists, so... also... i wrote this email, then checked alsa-project.org, and noticed that rc7 was out... so the first part of this details my problems with rc6, and the second part rc7. sorry this is a bit long, please bear with me. my 0.9.0_rc6 woes: after adding another 128mb of ram to my machine (bringing the total up to 640mb), i started seeing sound problems after my system was running for a while. specifically, i'd get something along the lines of: ALSA lib pcm_hw.c:297:(snd_pcm_hw_hw_params) SNDRV_PCM_IOCTL_HW_PARAMS failed: Cannot allocate memory (note: the pcm_hw.c line number is possibly incorrect; as i rebooted my machine i couldn't immediately reproduce the problem and so copied the error string from another user with the same problem back in november.) i ran a search thru google, and came up with a couple posts to both these lists, dated last november. apparently (my details may be a little off) the sb live! can only make use of 29-bit addresses for DMA, which only allows access to the first 512mb of ram. to make matters worse, the snd-emu10k1 driver dynamically allocates and frees DMA memory every time an application opens and closes the pcm device, so as my machine runs longer it becomes harder to find free ram in the first 512mb of memory. i found a patch - a hack to change the allocation method: http://www.mail-archive.com/alsa-devel@lists.sourceforge.net/msg05382.html unfortunately, this doesn't work on my machine. 'aplay somefile.wav' just hangs right after printing the wave file stats (sample rate, etc.), and the process refuses to die even with a 'kill -9'. this of course makes it impossible to unload the driver module, as it thinks it's being used. so then i noticed rc7, and tried that (unpatched, fresh from the website). things are somewhat worse. i load up xmms, and start playing mp3s. things seem fine, playing for hours until i get bored of some songs, put it on random play, and keep hitting "next song" until i find something i feel like listening to. if i press 'next' roughly once per second, after about 15-20 songs xmms locks up hard and jumps to using 100% cpu. kill -9 doesn't work, and any other app that tries to use the pcm device locks as well. i have to reboot to fix it. anyone have any ideas? thanks, brian --- This SF.NET email is sponsored by: SourceForge Enterprise Edition + IBM + LinuxWorld = Something 2 See! http://www.vasoftware.com ___ Alsa-user mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/alsa-user

Won't work. .asoundrc is read by applications when they run, not just login time. So if I am logged into two machines at the same time how does each machine read it's own version of the file? The answer is they won't. It's a race. Both machines will read the file as generated by the machine I last logged into. One solution, although it's totally hacky is to have the login shell (or process, such as gdm in the case of a desktop login) create the .asoundrc in a non-shared dir like /tmp (say, .asoundrc-brian) on all machines and symlink ~/.asoundrc to the /tmp/.asoundrc-brian. But as I say this is a hack and something that I think libasound should handle more gracefully. It's interesting to note at this point that DG/UX had an interesting libc implementation where in portions of the filesystem namespace you could put env. vars in a pathname: PATH=...:/usr/lib/$ARCH/bin/cc:... so that your $PATH would resolve to a different location in the the filesystem of the machine you were on based on $ARCH in your environment. I don't think that was limited to $ARCH. I think any env. var worked. b. -- My other computer is your Microsoft Windows server. Brian J. Re: [Alsa-user] Problems with INTEL audio card
Glad I saw this, this exact problem has been driving me crazy for a while. Sometimes the sounds works, sometimes it does not. I noticed that the bug report has been closed - NOTABUG. a configuration problem. I'm sorry, but when the sound does not work on an out-of-the-box install, something is just plain broken. So the solution is for everyone to examine all their modules to determine the correct loading sequence, and then blacklist certain modules? I can't believe they left it at that. Can someone here voice an opinion: is this an ALSA issue or fedora issue? Why does it just happen to certain select people (I assume it is a rare problem). thanks, brian On Thu, 2007-11-29 at 22:16 +0100, Wolfgang Paul Rauchholz wrote: > Problems seems to be fixed by adding the following line t > o/etc/modprobe.d/blacklist: > blacklist snd-intel8x0m > > https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=389521 > > Thanks for your efforts Bill and Nigel. > > > > On Nov 28, 2007 8:56 AM, Wolfgang Paul Rauchholz > <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > I booted the laptop and there is no sound. > As mentioned before, the sound/no-sound situation occurs at > random to me. Re: [Alsa-user] Problems with INTEL audio card
Even the Fedora soundcard detection tool is not outputting any sound for me, although my sound is working perfectly (this time around). The tool used to work just fine. I am going to reopen that bug and see if someone can straighten this out. I'd like to hear from anyone else having this problem (some boots the sound works, some boots it doesn't) On Sun, 2007-12-02 at 09:54 -0800, Bill Unruh wrote: > On Sun, 2 Dec 2007, Wolfgang P. [Alsa-user] FM801
Has anyone had any luck with FM801-based cards? The research I've done shows many people have problems with this chip. My card works fine when I use the forte kernel module, but I can't get any sound with ALSA. I've tried 0.9.8 and 1.0.0pre3 with no luck. Even though the kernel driver works for me, I'd like to get ALSA to work so that I can use ALSA-based software such as Rosegarden with a software synthesizer. Re: [Alsa-user] FM801
To add to my confusion, I noticed the following comment in forte.c (the driver that works for me): "Based upon the ALSA FM801 driver by Jaroslav Kysela and OSS drivers by Thomas Sailer, Alan Cox, Zach Brown, and Jeff Garzik." So the driver that I have no problems with is based on the driver that I can't get to work. It's probably a step in the wrong direction, but I'm going to merge the differences between the forte kernel module and ALSA's fm801 and see what happens. If anyone has a working ALSA fm801 configuration, I'd be grateful for any tips. I imagine, though, that if it works for you, you're probably not reading this list. The only message I get in /var/log/messages is: kernel: PCI: Found IRQ 5 for device 00:0b.0 The modules load fine and I get no errors anywhere in the logs or on any command lines. I've tried unmuting different combinations of channels, but I get no sound. Master, PCM, and Wave should be enough to get at least a sound, right? I made /etc/asound.conf based on the example on the ALSA website. I don't have a bar in alsamixer for external amplifier power down and it's not reported by amixer as a control or simple mixer control for this card. I've never been able to find information about this company either. I pulled the card out to give it a look and the sticker on the main chip says Diamond Technology DT0398. I'll look around for some hardware specifications. I'll also see if I can modify the fm801 module source and get it to work since the forte module does in fact work with this card in this machine with everything else the same. [Alsa-user] midi input (read) not working
Hi, I am running FC3, alsa 1.0.10 with an Audigy 2 Platinum. Previously I had been able to both play my midi keyboard and record from it using Rosegarden, earlier versions of alsa and RedHat 9. Now I can only play the keyboard - record doesn't work. Taking Rosegarden out of the equation, I used both JACK and aconnect to connect (see below) 64:32 directly to 65:0 and I get nothing playing the keyboard. Playing, e.g., pmidi -p 64:32 PeterGunn.mid or pmidi -p 65:0 PeterGunn.mid works just fine. So it seems just the 64:32 read port is not working. Anyone have any ideas or see this before? [Alsa-user] midi input (read) not working ALSA 1.0.10 FC3 Audigy 2
Guys, I hate to repost this - feel like I'm bugging y'all - but this has really got me at a standstill. The one commercial S/W product I own (Mathemnatica 5.2) forced me to upgrade to FC3, where I can't get midi to record under ALSA. (Ironically, the sound is broken now in Mathematica 5.2 under Linux (FC3), and they are not going to fix it in this version!). At least could someone tell me whether they've heard of this problem or not? I am running FC3, alsa 1.0.10 with an Audigy 2 Platinum. I think I have all the right modules loaded (see below). thanks a bunch, Brian aconnect -i client 0: 'System' [type=kernel] 0 'Timer ' 1 'Announce' client 64: 'Audigy MPU-401 (UART)' [type=kernel] 0 'Audigy MPU-401 (UART)' 32 'Audigy MPU-401 #2' aconnect -o client 64: 'Audigy MPU-401 (UART)' [type=kernel] 0 'Audigy MPU-401 (UART)' 32 'Audigy MPU-401 #2' client 65: 'Emu10k1 WaveTable' [type=kernel] 0 'Emu10k1 Port 0 ' 1 'Emu10k1 Port 1 ' 2 'Emu10k1 Port 2 ' 3 'Emu10k1 Port 3 ' [EMAIL PROTECTED] ~]# lsmod | grep snd_ snd_seq_oss38656 0 snd_seq_midi 13216 4 snd_emu10k1_synth 11520 4 snd_emux_synth 40320 5 snd_emu10k1_synth snd_seq_virmidi12288 1 snd_emux_synth snd_seq_midi_event 11392 3 snd_seq_oss,snd_seq_midi,snd_seq_virmidi snd_seq_midi_emul 11520 1 snd_emux_synth snd_seq57104 22 snd_seq_oss,snd_seq_midi,snd_emux_synth,snd_seq_virmidi,snd_seq_midi_event,snd_seq_midi_emul snd_emu10k1 116260 15 snd_emu10k1_synth snd_rawmidi29984 3 snd_seq_midi,snd_seq_virmidi,snd_emu10k1 snd_seq_device 13196 7 snd_seq_oss,snd_seq_midi,snd_emu10k1_synth,snd_emux_synth,snd_seq,snd_emu10k1,snd_rawmidi snd_ac97_codec 92320 1 snd_emu10k1 snd_pcm_oss55200 0 snd_mixer_oss 23040 2 snd_pcm_oss snd_pcm92164 5 snd_emu10k1,snd_ac97_codec,snd_pcm_oss snd_timer 29572 3 snd_seq,snd_emu10k1,snd_pcm snd_ac97_bus6528 1 snd_ac97_codec snd_page_alloc 14984 2 snd_emu10k1,snd_pcm snd_util_mem9088 2 snd_emux_synth,snd_emu10k1 snd_hwdep 14112 2 snd_emux_synth,snd_emu10k1 snd62436 24 snd_seq_oss,snd_seq_midi,snd_emux_synth,snd_seq_virmidi,snd_seq_midi_event,snd_seq,snd_emu10k1,snd_rawmidi,snd_seq_device,snd_ac97_codec,snd_pcm_oss,snd_mixer_oss,snd_pcm,snd_timer,snd_util_mem,snd_hwdep --- This SF.net email is sponsored by: Splunk Inc. Re: [Alsa-user] SP/DIF AC3 output from stereo source?
If you are using JACK, why don't you use ac3jack? http://essej.net/ac3jack/ it encodes ac3 on-the-fly - works fine for me brian On Sat, 2006-01-28 at 00:04 +0200, Sergei Steshenko wrote: > On Fri, 27 Jan 2006 22:50:02 +0100 > Philipp Taprogge <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > > > Hi! > > > > I'm net entirely sure if this my problem can be solved with tweaking > > alsa, so please direct me elsewhere if not. > > > > What I have is this: > > - Via EPIA Board w/ VIA VT 8233/A/8253/8273 AC97 Audio Controller > > - FC4 > > - alsa-lib 1.0.10-3 and alsa-utils 1.0.10-1 from rpm > > - a HW Dolby Digital decoder attached to the card via optical sp/dif > > > > What I want: > > - use mplayer to play back (e.g.) stereo mp3s and videos, adding > > rear, center and sub channels in the process (works) > > - get that output as a DD AC3 stream through the SP/DIF to the > > decoder/amp. > > > > > > I can play back correctly encoded AC3 audio all right (e.g. DVDs and > > avis with AC3 sound), but I have found no way to generate an AC3 > > stream on-the-fly from the 5.1 channels that the card (and alsa) > > provide. > > > > Thanks for any hints you might have to offer. > > > > Phil > > > > > > --- > > This SF.net email is sponsored by: Splunk Inc. [Alsa-user] can't seem to get ac3 passthrough working with ymfpci
I've been trying and trying and I just can't seem to get DD/DTS/AC3 to work. My receiver receives PCM just fine so at least I know the physical bits are working. I have tried both mplayer and ac3dec to drive the card into decoding AC3 but no luck. I believe I have the mixer settings correct. In fact I think I have everything unmuted and at somewhere in the 2/3 volume range. I have IEC958 Loop disabled/muted and Direct Recording Source set to IEC958. When I use say mplayer to play a raw ac3 file (which it can downmix and play analog through the liba52 codec) with: # mplayer -v -ao alsa -afm hwac3 /video/Bjorn_Lynne-A-Lifetime-Of-Moments_\(5-1_surround\).ac3 mplayer tells me: Trying to force audio codec driver family hwac3... Opening audio decoder: [hwac3] AC3/DTS pass-through S/PDIF dec_audio: Allocating 8192 bytes for input buffer. dec_audio: Allocating 16384 + 65536 = 81920 bytes for output buffer. Is there a browsable source repo anywhere so I can see if there is anything relevant for that driver before I embark on a whole building and installation adventure? > So you use the ymfpci driver?
