Yes.
I figured out how to change the output device in XMMS, but the USB speakers still aren't making any sound, and "aplay -Dplughw:1 /usr/share/sounds/alsa/test.wav" still pauses for a few seconds before returning without errors. It's as if the system *thinks* USB audio is working, but it's not. I've turned up all the volume levels for the USB speakers and they don't appear to be muted, so I'm still at a loss for why they might not be working.
If you have any other ideas I'd appreciate hearing them; thank you for all the suggestions you've provided so far.
