To add to my confusion, I noticed the following comment in forte.c (the driver that works for me):

"Based upon the ALSA FM801 driver by Jaroslav Kysela and OSS drivers by Thomas Sailer, Alan Cox, Zach Brown, and Jeff Garzik."

So the driver that I have no problems with is based on the driver that I can't get to work. It's probably a step in the wrong direction, but I'm going to merge the differences between the forte kernel module and ALSA's fm801 and see what happens. If anyone has a working ALSA fm801 configuration, I'd be grateful for any tips. I imagine, though, that if it works for you, you're probably not reading this list.

Thanks,
Brian

Has anyone had any luck with FM801-based cards? The research I've done shows many people have problems with this chip. My card works fine when I use the forte kernel module, but I can't get any sound with ALSA. I've tried 0.9.8 and 1.0.0pre3 with no luck. Even though the kernel driver works for me, I'd like to get ALSA to work so that I can use ALSA-based software such as Rosegarden with a software > synthesizer.

Thanks for any advice,
Brian
