Well, there would be no shifting at all in the Tesla semi. IIRC, it has
three "special" electric motors; one that runs all the time, and the other
two are engaged as needed. According to published reports, all three motors
provide 3X the torque of a diesel truck.

The wikipedia page is mostly correct:

2024-10-11 Thread Chuck

50 years tonight I watched a new TV show. Real time , (taped for the West
coast) linear (gasp). And I have probably watched every subsequent episode.
So a bit of a fan but it does stink most of the time. Saw the movie. Loved
it. I would suggest you watch the first episode before watching the movie.

2024-10-11 Thread Robert
Pepsi is the first company using them and wants more, a lot more.
Truck drivers that get to drive them for work love them.   Driving one
over the most common long route is over the Truckee summit and the
drivers love them over their old trucks.

The worst part of driving our RV ( 40K Lbs ) is downhill more than 5-6%
without enough exhaust break ( designed that way ).   Driving downhill
with an EV is trivial.  That is one of the most loved parts of driving a
Tesla Semi.   Massive torque and massive electrical breaking.

I remember a review early on that said the designers must have never

Robovan seems like a better idea to me than the stupid Cybertruck.  As
far as the taxi, it seems to me Waymo has been walking the walk while
Tesla talks the talk. Millions of miles of experience on the road
probably count for more than glitzy demos and hype.  But honestly the
Chinese will probably beat them all at the driverless taxi game.

The route over the sierras gives them back 20-30% of charge lost
climbing the mountains.   They are used base to base for recharging with
special location chargers.   They do the route as fast as a regular
diesel including charging because of the type of routes they are used for.

Re: [AFMUG] Art Deco Robovan

2024-10-11 Thread Ken Hohhof
Regenerative braking instead of engine braking would be a big improvement. As
would more torque for up hills or just getting up to speed. And I imagine an
electric semi would be a lot more pleasant to drive when stopped in traffic or
just inching along.

I know a farmer just went through getting his CDL to drive the family grain
truck, still needs to pass the manual transmission test because the test site
didn’t have any but that’s what the farm owns.

I wonder if you need a special CDL to drive an electric semi, or if it’s the
same as a diesel with an automatic.

Someone just the other day was explaining to me that the loud engine braking on
a big diesel isn’t the same as on my 6 speed manual car. Apparently there’s
something called a “Jake Brake”. OK, I would have guessed that was the name of
a porn star.

Yeah, there are a lot of super truckers out there that think that if a truck
can't be used for cross-continent trips, it's junk. The Tesla semi simply isn't
meant for trips that need a sleeper.

I think the complaints I read back when it was first introduced focused on two
things – driver positioned in the center, and no sleeper cab.

Supposedly with the driver in the center, it makes it difficult to pass
paperwork out the window at weigh stations and depots, or to access touchscreen
kiosks. Also can’t stick your head out the window to look behind when backing
up.

No place to put a bed, and passenger seat is behind the driver not next to.

Probably minor complaints that can be addressed by companies like Pepsi or DHL
that set their own procedures.

I just read a review of the Tesla Semi the other day. It was mainly by Pepsico
execs and actual semi drivers. From the review, the drivers absolutely love
them. The huge torque makes mountain/hill climbing almost effortless, and the
lack of noise and stink is a major plus. Of the drivers who were interviewed,
they all said they never wanted to go back to diesel.

Pepsico has something like 50 deployed with (some number of) million miles
driven, and they said they wanted to get 50 more.

I remember a review early on that said the designers must have never talked to

Robovan seems like a better idea to me than the stupid Cybertruck. As far as

not some idiot who’s fooled by complete nonsense like “NOAA creates hurricanes” and “lizard people secretly run the world”.

I’ve been using the really crazy examples, but all of our political opinions are being shaped by ideas being fed to us through all manner of media.  Odds are that every single one of us has absorbed some
 bullshit.

We may have to burn down the whole Internet for our own good.  We are not ready for this power.

HAARP was heating the ionosphere.  There ain’t no weather up there.

Weather is in the troposphere.

How is the Tesla Semi doing? Unlike the Robovan, it already exists, doesn’t it?

I remember a review early on that said the designers must have never talked to
an actual semi driver. But maybe the intent is to have them be driverless.

Robovan seems like a better idea to me than the stupid Cybertruck. As far as

Re: [AFMUG] Art Deco Robovan

2024-10-11 Thread Ken Hohhof
I think the complaints I read back when it was first introduced focused on two
things – driver positioned in the center, and no sleeper cab.

Supposedly with the driver in the center, it makes it difficult to pass
paperwork out the window at weigh stations and depots, or to access touchscreen
kiosks. Also can’t stick your head out the window to look behind when backing
up.

No place to put a bed, and passenger seat is behind the driver not next to.

Probably minor complaints that can be addressed by companies like Pepsi or DHL
that set their own procedures.

The semis aren’t sleeper cabs so probably they just recharge them at the Pepsi

Article said the robo taxis and vans would use inductive charging so no cord

The cars can drive themselves, but not get out and plug in a charging cord.

Re: [AFMUG] OT Weather

2024-10-11 Thread Adam Moffett
A relationship between beliefs and political views would be a self reinforcing
cycle. My parents, family, and friends set the initial patterns in my brain.
I’m more likely to believe things that fit the existing pattern. I’m more
likely to vote for people who express ideas I believe. Seems intuitive.

I didn’t think I was giving people any credit at all, except in the ratio of
believing 1 wrong idea per thousand. That’s an appeal to everyone’s conceit.
I doubt anyone is actually that good, but nobody would want to accept that 60%
of their knowledge of the world is wrong even if there was proof in front of
their noses. We all think we’re right, but given the rather drastic
differences in points of view I think it’s likely that most of us are somewhat
wrong and some of us are mostly wrong, and we all think it’s the other guy
who’s mostly wrong.

My point is that, while fact must exist, our information feed is so polluted
that it’s incredibly laborious to determine what’s actually a fact. We’d be
better off with no information than a continuous stream of conflicting
information, hence burn the internet.

In my early days of tech support we joked about people needing their internet
license revoked. Maybe we keep the internet, but the license is a real thing.
IETF can create an RFC defining qualifications to post factual content. All RFC
fact compliant content is delivered with a flag in the IP header. Non
compliant content can be filtered or flagged as potentially bullshit. This is
an Orwellian sounding idea, but maybe something developed by a collaborative
group like the IETF would be better than something like the Great Firewall of
China. Or maybe it will just politicize IETF membership. One way or another
we have to cut down the flat earth, artificial hurricane, and other nonsense
because unfortunately if it’s out there some people will inevitably believe it.
If we can’t control this monster we created then maybe we just have to kill it.

I would like to believe it’s a tiny number of crackpots, but I don’t think it’s
that simple. I’m scared for the future because everyone has access to so much
information and so much of it is bullshit. If I’m exposed to 1000 incorrect
ideas and I accept one of them, then I now believe in an incorrect idea, and
that incorrect idea will affect how I live my life –including how I vote. I
can look at 999 other incorrect ideas and still feel like I’m a discerning and
intelligent consumer because I successfully recognized them all as bullshit.
So a person can believe the moon landing was fake, and they know they’re not
the stupid one because they’re a smart person. They did research and got the
information, and they’re not some idiot who’s fooled by complete nonsense like
“NOAA creates hurricanes” and “lizard people secretly run the world”.

I have many friends and acquaintances that love them a good conspiracy theory.
I am not given to any conspiracies.

Today the subject was HAARP. (Defunct research project to attempt ionospheric
heating). I was actually tangentially associated with HAARP for a while.

Being a life long ham the prospect of creating a patch of ionosphere that could
reflect HF signals any time of the day or night was very exciting. The problem
is, it never worked. They learned a whole bunch about the upper atmosphere but
the initial promise never worked out. But wow, is there a group believing that
the guvmnt can control the weather. Yes, they can with cloud seeding etc but
not with HAARP. And control is not really a good word, more like influence.

I try to speak reason, share some facts, always falls on deaf ears.

HAARP was heating the ionosphere. There ain’t no weather up there.

Weather is in the troposphere.

Troposcatter can inject a bit of energy in the troposphere but it is 100 times
higher frequencies and produces no noticeable increase in temperature.

Here is a fact: Warmer air can hold more moisture. Something like 7% per
degree. Don’t recall if that was F or C.

If you could selectively and effectively heat the atmosphere with something
like radiowaves interesting things could happen. Even nefarious things.
