Jake brakes shut down some of the valves to create more forceful engine braking.  Those are the noisy ones.  There are also retarders that are essentially hydraulic pumps pumping into a dummy load.  Always good to have brake options.

I know a farmer just went through getting his CDL to drive the family grain truck, still needs to pass the manual transmission test because the test site didn’t have any but that’s what the farm owns.

 

I wonder if you need a special CDL to drive an electric semi, or if it’s the same as a diesel with an automatic.

 

Someone just the other day was explaining to me that the loud engine braking on a big diesel isn’t the same as on my 6 speed manual car.  Apparently there’s something called a “Jake Brake”.  OK, I would have guessed that was the name of a porn star.

Yeah, there are a lot of super truckers out there that think that if a truck can't be used for cross-continent trips, it's junk. The Tesla semi simply isn't meant for trips that need a sleeper.

I think the complaints I read back when it was first introduced focused on two things – driver positioned in the center, and no sleeper cab.

 

Supposedly with the driver in the center, it makes it difficult to pass paperwork out the window at weigh stations and depots, or to access touchscreen kiosks.  Also can’t stick your head out the window to look behind when backing up.

 

No place to put a bed, and passenger seat is behind the driver not next to.

 

Probably minor complaints that can be addressed by companies like Pepsi or DHL that set their own procedures.

I just read a review of the Tesla Semi the other day. It was mainly by Pepsico execs and actual semi drivers. From the review, the drivers absolutely love them. The huge torque makes mountain/hill climbing almost effortless, and the lack of noise and stink is a major plus. Of the drivers who were interviewed, they all said they never wanted to go back to diesel.

Pepsico has something like 50 deployed with (some number of) million miles driven, and they said they wanted to get 50 more.

I remember a review early on that said the designers must have never talked to an actual semi driver.  But maybe the intent is to have them be driverless.

 

Robovan seems like a better idea to me than the stupid Cybertruck.  As far as the taxi, it seems to me Waymo has been walking the walk while Tesla talks the talk.  Millions of miles of experience on the road probably count for more than glitzy demos and hype.  But honestly the Chinese will probably beat them all at the driverless taxi game.
