3494 Help

2000-11-09 Thread Gary Matthews

Hi All,

We're currently looking at getting a new, to replace our full up
3575s.Either a 3494 - which as our budget only runs to a second user
model, support will be at a minimal, or possibly an ADIC Scalar 1000. Is
anybody using either one in a mixed environment (Aix, NT,Novell -
ADIC/Mainframe,AIX, NT - 3494), any pointers on implementation, anything
to look out for? We've currently got ADSM 3.1 running on an SP (AIX 4.3.1/3)

OT - It looks like outsourcing is on the agenda, by a company called CGI.
As they're new to the UK, nobody here has had any experience of them.
Anybody dealt with them, for good or bad? ( I think they're called Certis
in Europe)

Thanks a lot.

By the way, you mentionned impossible to schedule a script -
a small 'astuce' if you want to schedule a script in TSM, just schedule
an administrative command under TSM containing : run

Re: tsm 4.1 event notification

2000-11-09 Thread Walter Ridderhof

 Steve,

I have a request outstanding for a fellow TSM'r for userexit code
under NT. Within a week I hope to have some time to cleanup my
existing userexit code (it has a tie in with the registry) so that it
has a more generic behaviour. As soon as I'm finished I'll send it to
 you.

To give a hint as to what the userexit will do for you, for every TSM
message not filtered a message file will be created in the TSM startup
directory. The message file will have a filename like userx001.mit
(the 001 is a message file number that will rap around at 999) with
 contents similar to this:

 ERR2121
 Event time: 11/11 12:00:00
Severity : error, TSM function: server
Event type: server, message origin: TSMSRVX, message owner: TSMSRVX
 --
 ANR2121 the message..

We have been running adsm 3.2.1.50 running on aix for several years. We
have written numerous korn shell scripts that do monitoring functions
like checking for offline drives, missed or failed schedules,
outstanding tape mounts, etc.

One important function is notifying our operators of a pending tape
mount for the 8mm drive which is used for our offsite media. In aix we
accomplish this by a script that tails the adsm console log so that
mount and other necessary messages can be trapped. Once trapped we
generate emails for some messages and for other messages we ftp jcl to
our os390 system. The job runs and puts up a mount message on the
operator console.

Now we are in the process of replacing adsm with tsm 4.1 which will run
on windows 2000. To ease the migration I installed cygwin (bash shell)
and blat (mail) so that most of our aix scripts would work with minor
modifications. However, the really important script that tails the
console log has some problems. It works fine for a while and then just
stops working. I have not had any luck diagnosing the problem so I have
been looking for alternatives. So far I have looked at event logging for
file, filetext, nteventlog and userexit and for various reasons have not
been successfull implementing them.

How do the rest of you handle notifying your operations staff of tsm
manual tape mount requests or other events that need attention?

Hi Toni,
Well its been a few years since I had my ADSM training, but one of my colleagues
took an
ADSM version 3.1 implementation course with IBM Southbank in 1999 and his
verdict was
that it was reasonably useful, if heavily biased on the client side, and he
would give it 7 out of 10.
We actually wanted the course to be more biased to the host server set up.
So I think the lesson here is to find out as much detail about the course as you
can to make sure that it meets your particular requirements.

Re: 3494 Help

2000-11-09 Thread Ruddy STOUDER

Hi !

I am running a 3494 with 6 drives allocated to NT/Unix(HP) world (*)
machines) and 2 drives allocated to AS4/00(4 machines).

NT/Unix world is running through TSM 3.7.3 located on a H80 AIX machine.
AS4/00 is accessing the 3493 as a single device through BRMS.

3493 is a wonderful library, running under OS/2 and having its own
database which is very easy when you want to know if a tape is in the
robot or not, it's just a quick request to the 3494 which answers
immediately without having to scan the whole library to be sure.

Evrything is working fine mixing this environment. The problems or
needed workarounds are due to the TSM software which still contains some
bugs but nothing due to the 3493 library.

Re: Training

2000-11-09 Thread Sharp, Chris

My to cents on this subject are that the course in Southbank was not much to
write home about. I did the course in April/May last year and did not find
it to be very good (it was based around ADSM 3.1). The course was two vague
and did not cover the interaction of tape libraries at all, or the usage of
the web admin, which I use all the time now. I was not the only one that
found this as one of my colleges went on the same course about 8/9 months
later and said pretty much the same thing, the only thing the course did,
was to give me a vague overview, as I had never seen the system before. I
would give the course about a 4.5 out of 10. Hopefully now though, with TSM
being around, the course has been update, and would be more relevant.

Re: Client ver 3.7.2 - no SA software

2000-11-09 Thread Mike Glassman - Admin

Andy, Gill,

I did indeed do the custom install. And I noticed that there is the command
line interface, but I was referring to the SA GUI interface as with version
3.1.

Is there no longer a GUI interface ?

I am as said by Lawrence, using the GUI of the 3.1, but I had thought the
newer versions would also have some sort of GUI interface.

Makes it much much easier to add nodes, check statuses of backups, kill jobs
etc.

Anyone on the SA GUI for 3.7 and above ?

Sadly the SA GUI is gone, I'm not sure I ever read why it was taken out
unless they are just trying to simplify things. I also liked it.

I did try a test though. I installed the 3.1.08 version on a computer and
upgraded to a newer version without removing. Since the new version does not
install in the same directory structure as before I was able to keep the SA
GUI and it seemed to work. I doubt Tivoli would support you if you had
problems since 3.1 is going off support soon.

You may use any web browser like Netscape to administrate the server, the
address is default to dns of your server followed by port 1580, in my case it
is http://pu01:1580/. Then you'll get a nice GUI.

Re: Antw: TSM Server for AIX, newest version 3.1.2 ?

2000-11-09 Thread Glen Smith

Werner,

ADSM 3.1.2 is the latest available for AS/400 (running OS/400).
TSM 4.1.x does not exist for AS/400.

I've never heard of RS/6000 running on AS/400 hardware.

The operatung system is OS/400 version 4 release 5. On the mentioned Internet

AIX, but not the AS/400 I guess.

I have heard this has been in the works for quite a while. Your future
AS/400 will be purchased, unboxed, and IPL'd. A screen will display your
setup options and you can choose either AIX or OS/400. Same basic hardware,
same processor, same architecture.

This is what I have heard, so, for what it its worth...I would say..its to
close to call.

Re: Netware file rights not getting back with restore

2000-11-09 Thread Tim Melly

We have had the same problem, Tivoli is looking into it. Our Novell Admin had
to manually reapply the trustee rights.

We also had an problem with restoration of "long name" files, *SM 3.7 does not
always restore to the long pathname. Tivoli is also looking into this issue for
us.

Needless to say, our Novell Admins are thrilled with the new TSM code.

If you get any resolution out of Tivoli let me know because the best we could
get was that they are working on fixes in the TSM 4.1.2 code.

Regards, Tim

Re: Client ver 3.7.2 - no SA software

2000-11-09 Thread Zoltan Forray/AC/VCU

There are too many things, in the WWW interface that do not work like the
SA gui or are simply not available.

For instance, I collect data transfer statistics. I do this by going to the
SA GUI client, SERVER ACTIVITY LOG, select all 4961 messages and then
SELECT / PRINT them to a file that is imported into a spreadsheet.

Can't do this with the WWW interface. The output is wrapped (if you just
cut/paste). No option to print to a file or with COMMA DELIM, etc.

Also, did I mention it is dog-slow !!! I have tried using the WWW
interface and after waiting 20 minutes (this is of course, after clicking
through 8-levels to find something) for a query to return (and don't even
think about suggesting our network is the issue. We run 1GB ethernet, FDDI,
ATM, etc. Speed is not an issue), I jumped into the SA GUI program and the
same query/info came back almost immediately !!!.

Re: Client ver 3.7.2 - no SA software

2000-11-09 Thread Fred Johanson

I've also kept my gui alive for these reasons, plus the ability to filter
requests and backtrack. Changing copygroup settings in a domain is a few
clicks on a limited list in the gui with a much easier return to your
starting point. The only fans of the WebAdmin around here are those who
have never used the gui.

type of things were covered in the course, here is the course outline for
the class that I've taken:

Unit 1: Tivoli Storage Manager Overview
Unit 2: Installation, Packaging and Licensing
Unit 3: TSM Server Administration
Unit 4: Implementing Client Functions
Unit 5: Policy Management
Unit 6: Central Scheduler
Unit 7: Event Logging, Reporting and Monitoring
Unit 8: Database and Storage Pool Backup and Recovery

Since this is a fairly large amount of information to disperse over the
course of four days, at times I was overwhelmed with information and
questions. However, the trainer that we had seemed to be well qualified
and fielded all questions competently.

Hope this information is useful to you.

Cheers,

Hi Toni,
Well its been a few years since I had my ADSM training, but one of my
colleagues
took an
ADSM version 3.1 implementation course with IBM Southbank in 1999 and his
verdict was
that it was reasonably useful, if heavily biased on the client side, and he
would give it 7 out of 10.
We actually wanted the course to be more biased to the host server set up.
So I think the lesson here is to find out as much detail about the course
as you
can to make sure that it meets your particular requirements.

Hello Everyone:

Over the next few weeks, our team is writing an IBM redbook about using the
latest TSM client on Windows 2000 Professional, Server, and Advanced

such a book. For example, what items give/gave you problems; what is not

the book?

Thanks in advance.

Re: Problem Installing 4.11.16 client on NT4 Server SP6a

2000-11-09 Thread France, Don G (Pace)

Sounds like you have an MS installer problem... If you haven't already, you
may need to re-install MSI and/or SP6a. Also, consider doing NT
repair-install (from the decision-path that uses existing disk-based backup
files, not the ERD), as that would be least likely to add to your problem.
This might not be useful if you didn't create new ERD (which updates the
config backup files).

After doing that, re-run the TSM install (maybe un-install first; though
I've never found that to be effective, we had an NT box that recently got
its dsmsched.log corrupted with unintelligible date-time stamps... the cure
was un-install and re-install!) Also, verify your install image on the
failing machine is identical to the success machines.

If all this fails, consider using an incident with Microsoft, as that seems
the most likely source of your symptoms; you did already check the TechNet
K-Base articles for symptoms, right? Hope some of this helps.

Subject:Problem Installing 4.11.16 client on NT4 Server SP6a

I just upgraded 8 servers from 3.1.06 to 4.11.16 running NT4 Server SP6a.
All worked fine.

One other server fails with the message "The wizard was interrupted before
Tivoli Storage Manager Client could be completely installed. Your system
has not been modified. To complete installation at another time, please run
setup again."

I was able to upgrade this server to the 3.7.201 version.

I have seen previous postings on this problem, one said to try to run
instmsiw.exe then run setup later - this didn't solve the problem for me.

I have tried running setup logged into local console with a lcoal admin id,
and with Antivirus stopped (as suggested by Andy Raibek in a post) - still
no luck.

I created a setup log, the last lines in the log are:
MSI (c) (0B:F6): Transforming table Error.

MSI (c) (0B:F6): Transforming table Error.

MSI (c) (0B:F6): Product: Tivoli Storage Manager Client -- Installation
operation failed.

MSI (c) (0B:F6): MainEngineThread is returning 1603
=== Verbose logging stopped: 11/7/00  15:17:53 ===

If anyone has a solution for this problem, it would be appreciated.

TSM 3.7.3.0 database backup and recovery

2000-11-09 Thread Ehland Ann J

Hello all,

As an FYI, I wanted to let you know that there is a known problem with
backing up the TSM Version 3, Release 7, Level 3.0 (not ADSM!) database and
trying to restore it.
While TSM is able to WRITE the database backup to multiple cartridges, it
appears that TSM is unable to READ multiple cartridges during the restore.
I believe the end-of-file/volume mark is getting spanned to the subsequent
tape, therefore when you try to read the subsequent tape, you will encounter
a media error. It is not a problem with the cartridge, rather with the TSM
logic. Fixtest 18 is supposed to address this, but is currently not GA.
Please note: this is only an issue with restoring the database and NOT when
doing a LOAD database.
Also, the ADSM server we were trying to restore is on MVS so I don't know if
this applies to all platforms.
Ann...

Re: Problem Installing 4.11.16 client on NT4 Server SP6a

2000-11-09 Thread Palmadesso Jack

I have also seen the same problem. Tried on fresh sp5 and sp6 machines.
Also it only happens when I try to do a silent install. If I do a manual
install it works fine. The silent install will dr watson with msiexec.exe
but the installation of the TSM Client continues and finishes. The client
seems to work fine too. I just don't want to send an install out there when
I know its going to dr watson out. I am just telling them to install it
manually with my doc. There definitely seems to be some problem with the
new MSInstaller.

If anyone has a solution for this problem, it would be appreciated.

You can run an ADSM admin session from your script, and do whatever you
like with the output. You can store the password in a file, then read the
file contents into a variable, to keep the password out of the script (on
AIX, using a tool like SUDO, any user can run the script, but only the root
user can read the file the password is stored in. Something like this:

PASSWORD='cat /home/root/adsmpw'
"dsmadmc -id=USERID -pass=$PASSWORD "macro macroname"

Tom was kind enough to send me the document. I'm afraid that it's a fairly
useless document. It doesn't teach anything about SQL; any basic tutorial
on SQL would actually be better. The only moderately good thing about the
document is that it contains a complete listing of syscat.columns, but even
that isn't too useful because it's not grouped by tabname. In fact, I just
figured out why the document looked familiar. It's exactly the same as the
output of the "help select" command from the ADSM Admin command line.

There was no assertion made that the document would teach anything about SQL:
there are plenty of web sites and text books for that, including
 http://www.uni-karlsruhe.de/~rz57/ADSM/3rd/handouts/raibeck/index.htm .
And if you take a more careful look at Andy's document (at least the original)
you will see that it is arranged in multiple ways, by column and then by
table. And it's far more than the output of 'help select'. Please give Andy
credit for putting a lot of work into providing us with a very handy reference.

I am sorry you did not find it useful. However, it is not intended to be a
tutorial, but a reference. I do not know what the cover of the copy you have
looks like, but I did indicate that it is a work in progress. Unfortunately
it's been quite some time since I wrote it, and I have yet to find the time
to get it up to date and add some more stuff.

Background: I was trying to learn SQL myself (the SELECT command), and had the
idea to write a presentation as I learned. I presented this at the University
of Karlsruhe's ADSM Symposium in 1998, and again at a subsequent SHARE. The
presentation was the tutorial part, and as an added "bonus", I included the
document that you have a copy of. It was/is a "pet project" of mine to fill
the document out at some future time, but I just haven't been able to find the
time to get to it. As a start for the doc you have, I "borrowed" the HELP
information from ADSM itself, just as you have surmised, and added some
appendices with what I hoped would be more useful reference information
regarding the tables and columns available, and the supported SQL
functions.

Eventually I would like to add a little more meat to the document, including
an improved tutorial and info on the ODBC driver. The HELP info would either
no longer be necessary, or I'd relegate it to an appendix.

It's all a matter of trying to eke out a few more hours in the day...

I don't think there's a day goes by that I don't use this document as a
reference; it has been enormously helpful.

Some people may need to be reminded, though, that these are the tables from
ADSM 3.1.something.
Versions 3.7 and 4.1 have added some tables and some columns.

You can get the listings yourself of the tables for your ADSM server with:

select * from syscat.tables
select * from syscat.columns
select * from syscat.enumtypes

Future of Space Manager under OS/390

2000-11-09 Thread Thomas Denier

We are preparing to use the Tivoli Space Manager product with our OS/390
server. A couple of days ago I took a look at the Tivoli Web page with end of
currency information for TSM and related products
(http://www.tivoli.com/support/storage_mgr/tivolieoc.html). The page lists
three 3.7 products for OS/390: the base product, the space manager, and the
disaster recovery manager. All three go off support at the end of September
2001. The page lists only two 4.1 products for OS/390: the base product and
the disaster recovery manager. The page would seem to indicate that Tivoli is
in the process of phasing out the space manager for OS/390 servers. I have
sent electronic mail to Tivoli Corporate Marketing asking for clarification. I
am still waiting for a reply almost two business days later. In the meantime,
I was wondering if anyone on this list has more information about the future,
or lack of future, of the space management product.

Can't speak for the admin gui because I've never seen it (starting out on
3.7, never seen any earlier versions), but web admin isn't totally useless.
There's one thing in particular that's vastly easier with web admin than

But so far, I prefer the command line for most things.

TCP IP connection failure

2000-11-09 Thread Yasmin Natasya Hafiz Shahrel

Good day all,
Need help...Yesterday, I've deleted the storage pool volumes for 10 tapes
using the Web based.. I did this continuously without waiting for the tapes
to finish first the deletion process. At that time it was okay..but this
morning when I issue command dsmadmc and enter the user ID, error displayed
as :
ANS1017E: Session rejected: TCP/IP connection failure.
ANS80021 : Connection refused by the server.
   Highest return code was -50

As a result, I won't be able to login to the server. ANybody can help me on
this? Is this error caused by what I did on the tapes yesterday...Thank you
in advance.

Regards,
Aishah

Re: Antw: TSM Server for AIX, newest version 3.1.2 ?

2000-11-09 Thread Reiner Sauer

Both machines could have an risc-processor. We use a AS400e Mod. 170 with OS/400 and
rs6000 with aix.

I ve got a TSM shipment last month. It includes for all OS (window, aix ,...) the
version 4.1. The only one with a special version is AS/400. The version is 3.1.

The operatung system is OS/400 version 4 release 5. On the mentioned Internet
page there is a version for AS/400 and one for AIX. The IBM RS/6000 runs on
AIX, but not the AS/400 I guess.

Any idea?

Hi all

On http://www.tivoli.com/support/storage_mgr/pubs/admanual.htm#tsm I saw that
for the AS/400 the newest TSM Server version level is 3.1.2. Is this true, is
there really no version 4.1 available?

Thanks for any help

I converted the file and have it available in pdf format, if anyone is
interested. It is a 236K file.

Is there a text, word, or html format of this doc available?
