Ann - there are longer riders - they're called brevets. Plenty of
scheduled 200Ks in the area.

The Populaire is kinda for everyone. For a lot of folks, 70 miles is
a big deal, and its a way to get their head around randonneuring and
work up to a 200K. Or at least they can take part.

But its also a fun opportunity to enjoy a nice ride with good people
over a scenic route. Many folks in SFR subscribe to RIv-ish
philosophies and aesthetics. Participation and fellowship are key. I
was talking with some friends down here about randonneuring, and I
came up with 3 ways one can ride a 200K:
1). Participate, ride it/survive it, linger, sit down and eat, take
photos, enjoy a day on the bike. This is really fun.
2). Participate, ride strong, challenge yourself, but don't kill
yourself. This is pretty fun too.
3). Participate, train for it, ride very hard, improve, measure, go
for a great time. I haven't tried this.

Then comes 300K and beyond. Madness, indeed. But somehow as fun as
can be.
