Nothing much to add, as I have totally given up clipless systems for all biking except mountain biking. My mountain bikes all have Eggbeaters, and I find them much easier to clip into than Shimano. Plenty of float, too. Shoes have always been the cheapest Specialized I can find, as they fit my narrow feet.
But on the country bike, I've never been happier than I am now with VP flat pedals and running shoes. All-day comfort, and no need for extra shoes while touring. wOOt!
