Not a lot to add to the thread. I have dual Shimano A530 SDP pedals (http://www.rosebikes.com/article/shimano-spd-pd-a530-pedals/aid:221944), which have worked well for me on tours. I just finished a 12-day tour from Portland to San Francisco on my new Sam and went the first half way with Addidas Samba tennis shoes and the second half with Bontrager SSR SPD shoes I bought at Revolution Bicycles in Arcata, CA. I really appreciated being clipped in for the long and/or steep climbs (from Hwy 101 to 1, for example!). Next tour I'll take my SPD shoes only, as they allow me to walk around off bike with no problem. I'd recommend basic SPD shoes that are (a) comfotable and (b) allow you to walk normally off your bike.
