Cost. It might make good business sense for an outfit with 10 or 15
employees or similar to use (for example) hosted Microsoft Exchange
Online for a monthly fee rather than the huge outlay involved in a
server and expertise to run it in-house. And a hardware support contract
for the server, etc, etc.

It does - but I'd be wary of putting something like your payroll
application in the cloud. for example. Imagine if the internet bugs out
at 3pm on a Friday when Madge is trying to get people paid before
Christmas ... not good.

There's also the episode last month where a lightning strike knocked out
Microsoft's BPOS and Amazon's EC2 cloud services which are hosted here
in Dublin, for a day if not two ...
