Quoting Bob W-PDML <[email protected]>:
LR and PS are built around different metaphors. Layers are a graphic
design concept, not a photography concept. LR is built around the
idea of a darkroom, where there are no layers as far as I recall.
This I think is key to understanding LR.
What results can you achieve with layers etc. that you can't achieve
in LR by a more 'darkroomy' means?
Probably very little but one thing I like to do with layers in PS for
certain images, and once I've adjusted the colour image the way I
like, is to merge all layers to a new top layer and do a B&W
conversion on it with Silver Efex Pro. In this way I can save both
colour and B&W versions in the one layered file. It's not a big deal
but I don't think that's possible in LR.
I think these things often come down to people preferring what
they're used to. When they're used to doing something one way in a
system, that can sometimes seem like the only way.
I don't think it's the only way - and there are enough LR users on the
list to demonstrate that - but I've been using PS and layers since
before LR was a glimmer in Adobe's eye. I have a workflow that
incorporates PS and which works fine for me, so I just don't have any
incentive to sit down and learn LR.
If I was starting from scratch now, things would probably be different.
