I evidently selected a wrong option installing Lightroom.
It "froze" because it was busy searching the hard-drive for graphics files while creating the initial catalog. After it had found *EVERY* graphic file on the hard-drive and imported them into the initial catalog, it ran Ok - if somewhat slowly due to the number of files in the catalog. The second time I installed it, I managed to limit the catalog to only those images I was importing from my memory card. It didn't take very long to import those & there was no freezing. I hadn't considered Photoshop Elements because I've not used it, but a quick search tells me the later versions of Elements have at least some of the tools I want that Lightroom doesn't seem to have - i.e. LAYERS, layer masks, blending modes ... A quick round up from the many helpful and thought provoking replies: John mentions Lightroom freeing up. I have a copy of PSE v9. So why, you may ask, am I asking questions about software. I can only use it to crop or resize photos. Any more than this and the computer freezes or causes some other issue which ruins my whole day. Now I have no idea why that might be and it's too late to worry about it, but I wonder if buying an upgrade pack to v13 would cure it? Paul pointed out that LR is a non destructive method of altering photos. I hadn't heard of the OnOne suite until today and a quick look at one of the tutorials shows it also works from copies, which I think is a good thing. Your comments about PSE v13 also make me consider the upgrade again. Bruce, Bob and Ken; I can see there is strong support for what LR can do, especially in the latest version, and I think that's my first choice so far. I'll see what else I need if anything. Obviously, it will take a good while to become familiar with what it can do anyway. It is most interesting to see the different way this is tackled. For some reason, I've had it in my mind that PS was the only real choice (good advertising?) but that clearly is not the case. Malcolm
